[nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull- Point Lookout, Nassau County 3/15/24
Hi All, Had an interesting gull fly onto the jetty adjacent to the western most part of the parking lot at Point Lookout yesterday around 6pm. Sent some pics for review (Thank you so much Shai!!) and the bird indeed is an Iceland Gull. Wanted to put up a post here in case anyone is down that way and wants to put it on their radar as perhaps it continues. [nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting continues at Hempstead lake state park - Nassau County
Hi All, Popped in quickly to see if we could re-find the hempstead lake painted bunting around 4pm today and we were able to see and photograph it. Not far past where the parking lot ends, whereas we usually have seen it a bit further along the path other times. Not sure if anyone has seen or got the word out lately or if sightings have gone a bit cold on this bird, but can confirm it is still there!! [nysbirds-l] Pacific Loon - Jones Beach west end 2, Nassau county
Hi All!! A little before dusk today we had a Pacific Loon loafing amongst about half a dozen common loons in the inlet. They were a few hundred yards south of the fishermans road parking lot. Parking by the coast guard, we walked the fishermans path, down past the parking lot there and stayed close to the inlet. Initially the plan was to make it out to the jetty but some puddles made access tricky so its recommended to wear waterproof boots if full access is desired!! Got the word out straightaway, but wanted to drop a note here to get the word out further!! Kind regards-Kev -- (copy & paste any URL below, then modify any text "_DOT_" to a period ".") Hi All!! [nysbirds-l] Arctic Tern, Nickerson Beach, Nassau County
Hi All, Went looking for Roseate Terns this evening and photo'd a lone tern in front of the 'west colony' that nagged me as a potential Arctic Tern, upon further review of the 3 poor photos taken, there is enough there to show the right size and color of the legs and bill. I wanted to get the word out regarding this sighting! A note on the roseates,...There was 2 preening Roseate Terns in front of the 'west colony' that eventually flew into and sat in the roped off area together, and before that there was a lone roseate tern in front of the eastern colony. [nysbirds-l] White Ibis -west meadow beach, Suffolk county-Yes
Hi All, We saw the previously reported 7 juvenile White Ibis by the Ernst center about a half mile walk from the west meadow beach parking lot. After about 5 minutes they disappeared into tall grass by the waters edge, then a kayak got them up for about a 10 yard flight and they disappeared again. At just before 6:35 pm they all picked up together and flew aggressively southwest until I could no longer keep them in view. Special thanks to Marjorie for the great and helpful directions!! The tide was getting high, hopefully the birds will return. We viewed them from the short pier by the Ernst center building. The bird will sometimes fly back in the direction towards the sandspit at Short Beach but I saw several times it would turn around and head back towards the bridge area described in my earlier post.. It seems very reliable just like in past years with the same species here that it doesn't sit far from the shore... it loafs about and will sometimes fly up a little jump to maybe grab a fish or something ..but its pretty loyal to the area ...Also waterproof boots are a very good idea ...there is a spot or two that would require a bit of a jump if you didn't have waterproof shoes but if you do have them it's not a problem.. good luck!! [nysbirds-l] Orange Crowned Warbler- oceanside MNSA , nassau county
Hi all, Just had a Orange Crowned Warbler on the bedell creek side of the nature study, for those very familiar with the MNSA it was right near the fence where we see 'Buster' the dog,... walk the path behind the building, curving around the corner and up that path a little until the green fence ends, that seemed the general area it preferred. [nysbirds-l] Dickcissel and Lark Sparrow Robert moses field 2- yes
Both birds showed well, even together in the same photo frame at times, however if your on your way now those two birds and the flock they are associated with moved east to the volleyball courts and then north and I lost them around 3:30pm. Finding a sparrow flock of at least ten sparrows with a few cowbirds mixed in would be a recommended way of searching...other birders had found the bird just a few hundred yards east of the pay tolls at field two and they stuck around for a bit, then about a hundred yards at a time the whole flock went tree to tree until flying slightly south into the volleyball courts then north into a tree near the volleyball nets and then north and out of my sight...very possibly they will reset back to the preferred spot a few hundred yards east of the toll booths again, at least that would be the hope!! [nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern- lido preserve ,nassau county
There are at least two Gull-billed Terns that are giving great looks actively looking for food and resting in the puddles at the lido preserve passive nature center area. I've been spoiled by great looks by them the last 3 times I've been here, usually from around 2pm in the few hours I'll bird here before heading to nickerson beach at 4pm. These Gull-billed Terns seem pretty reliable here, figured I'd get the word out so others can enjoy too!! [nysbirds-l] Oceanside MNSA, Nassau County 10 Black-bellied Whistling Ducks
Hi All! Right as I was walking the trail back to leave mmsa at closing time I saw a flock of black bellied whistling ducks land just behind and to the left of the the osprey nest. I imagine the birds were at the golf course and something must have spooked them and they all flew into the Marine Nature Center. Watching the flock of 10 Birds with their bright beaks flying together was quite a sight. The birds appeared to be getting sleepy and started lying low in the grass soon after. It's a good thing I was just kind of surveying the area looking for salt marsh and seaside sparrows as that had me looking in the right direction when the Ducks came in -Kev -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
