Re: [nysbirds-l] American Flamingos in New York State

2024-06-02 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
It may be worth adding to these the report from October 1 of last year of a
bird flying up the Hudson in northern Ulster county:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S151204238. Many region 8 birders staked out
various spots among the river, but did not relocate a flamingo.

[nysbirds-l] Townsend’s Solitaire, Greene County

2024-03-17 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Yesterday, Tomas Kay found a Townsend’s Solitaire at North-South Lake
Campground in Greene County. The bird was refound this morning by Keith
Cronin by the South Lake bathrooms, and again this afternoon by Adrian
Burke, who reported initially finding the bird at 42.19824, -74.03548
before it “flew west and then north to around here 42.19756, -74.03823.”

This is the first record of this western species for Greene County and only
the fourth for Region 8.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [hmbirds] Black-legged Kittiwake. - The Crossings

2022-09-14 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
It wasn’t clear until this morning that this bird was unwell. By the time
a rehabilitator could have arrived at the scene, the bird likely would have
already been deceased. The state museum can determine whether or not the
bird should go to the pathology lab, but the possibility of an avian flu
infection seems like it would be a point against involving a rehabilitator,
since other birds in the care of the rehabilitator could then in turn
become infected themselves.

[nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kites continue in Saratoga County

2022-06-10 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Hi,

The Saratoga county MIKIs are still present and were observed this morning
despite negative reports yesterday. On Wednesday, one bird was observed
carrying nesting material and it is certain that the pair is indeed nesting
nearby, likely on inaccessible private property. If you go, please be
respectful of the neighbors, who have been really great about all of the
birders thus far, as well as of the birds.

[nysbirds-l] Kites update

2022-06-08 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
The Mississippi kites in the country knolls development in Jonesville,
Saratoga county, are still present today and have been reported by multiple
observers. Yesterday, several birders observed the pair copulating.
Hopefully breeding can be confirmed in the atlas block.

The residents of the area have been interested in the bird and seem happy
to have folks walking the streets and looking for the kites. I hope that
folks going to see the kites can help maintain good relations between
birders and local residents.

[nysbirds-l] Goose update and Blackbird.

2021-03-17 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Neither the Saratoga County Tundra Bean-Goose nor the Pink Footed Goose
have been seen today (Wednesday.). Good numbers of Cackling Geese continue
to be seen, and the Greater White Fronted Goose and Greater White-Fronted x
Canada Hybrid that have been present along the Hudson around Stillwater
have both been reported today. One or both may still be in the area -
there is a ton of ground to cover and much of the habitat is inaccessible
to birders.

This morning Scott Surner found a male Yellow-Headed Blackbird at Walsh
Road and Route 68 (about 2.5 miles east of Fish Creek Marina.). The bird
was relocated at that location later in the morning by Gregg Recer and
found again by Gail Benson about 1.3 miles NW of its original location,
near where Burgoyne Road intersects Route 68. This is only the second
record of Yellow-Headed Blackbird in eBird for Saratoga County, though I
haven’t gone through to check the Kingbird yet to see if there are others.
Interestingly, last March a male YHBL spent a couple weeks on Mahaffey Road
in the Washington County Grasslands, only about 15 miles away from where
this bird was found.

At sunrise this morning, while I was checking the small goose flock at the
south end of Saratoga Lake, an American Mink ran right past my foot.

For those considering chasing, the weather forecast for tomorrow is pretty
dismal - rain starting around 9 AM and turning to snow in the evening. Not
sure what effect this will have on geese, but I imagine the blackbirds will
hunker down.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [hmbirds] Goose report

2021-03-16 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Sure. The Tundra Bean-Goose was rediscovered at 8:45 Tuesday morning by
Chris Carpist at the intersection of Routes 70 and 71 just east of Saratoga
Lake with about 200 Canada Geese. After it flew northwest it was
rediscovered at Fish Creek Marina and remained there until around noon,
when it flew off to the northeast. It was not relocated after that.
Numerous cackling geese were seen, but not the Pink-Footed.

If the goose isn’t at the lake tomorrow it’s worth checking nearby spots
along the Hudson like Lock 2, where this bird was first seen on Friday by
David DiSiena, or Saratoga Sod Farm, where several thousand Canada Geese

An American Avocet was discovered a few days ago in Jefferson County, by if
I recall correctly, Brian Miller and Eileen Wheeler. It has been reported
by Jeff Bolsinger and Iain Davies as well. I looked for and found it today
(May 2).

It is on County Route 9, just south of its intersection with SR 12E, at a
pond just north of the Wood Farms dairy barns and across from the TI High
School, and was easily seen from the road.

Hi Julie,

Sara and I had a very exciting discovery today—a Harris’s Sparrow! Sara
took these photos. We found it on our walk around Buckingham Pond which is
right next to Stonehenge Gardens where we live. It was associating with 3
White-throated Sparrows. It was off the trail that circles the pond at the
west end of Raft Street (at this point the trail runs parallel to Raft
Street on the south side of the pond). It was in a semi-open area on the
pond side of the trail where the trail makes a 90 degree turn. The easiest
way to reach this location is to park at the playground on Berkshire Blvd.
and walk the trail to the spot.

Later in the morning I returned to the area where we saw the bird and
scattered some millet. We checked the spot one more time later in the
afternoon but saw no birds at the seed.

Sara and I don’t know any other birders so you can share this information
as you like. We’ll check for the bird tomorrow. Thanks!

Brian and Sara

[nysbirds-l] Washington County Sedge Wren

2019-06-22 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
For the second consecutive year, a sedge wren has been singing along
Mahaffey Road in the Fort Edward grasslands (just over the town line in
argyle. The approximate address of this bird is 1088 Mahaffey road, between
county route 42 and Hinds Rd. There may be additional birds around, as
there were last July. This year’s bird was first (re?)located last weekend
by John McKay.

[nysbirds-l] Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Albany

2019-06-04 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
This afternoon, Brian Smith found a Black-Bellied Whistling Duck on the
University at Albany, SUNY campus. The bird is hanging out by "Indian
Pond," which is towards the south end of the campus. Visitors can park in
visitor lot 2 for $5 or at one of the businesses on Western avenue and then
walk a bit. The bird is not banded and shows no signs of pinning. This is
a first record for the county.

in favor of something more exciting.

[nysbirds-l] A note about the Solitaire, and pine Grosbeaks

2019-02-23 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
The Townsend’s Solitaire continues to be seen at the same location on high
valley road in Copake Falls. One of the original finders of the bird has
asked that people looking for this bird stop using playback, since
Townsend’s Solitaire is fairly territorial on winter habitat. The reward
for using playback is quite small in relation to the cost of
agitating/harassing the bird, so hopefully anyone chasing the Solitaire
will respect this reasonable request.

In other region 8 news, over the last week, several Pine Grosbeaks have
been found in Southeastern washington county, in White Creek, on the
Vermont Border, and in “downtown” Salem, where 24 were reported yesterday
and where several people (including me) found scattered birds this morning.

Good birding

Then I saw it in one of the apple trees by the red barn! It’s still there.

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [hmbirds] Scissor-tailed flycatcher still present

Update on the Guilderland Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, for those considering
chasing it.

-- Forwarded message -
From: David Martin

Subject: [hmbirds] Scissor-tailed flycatcher still present
To:

The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was seen by at least 4 birders as late as
10 AM today (10/9). When I was there it regularly perched on the top of
a tall spruce near an old-looking house a couple of driveways east of
646. Curt Morgan had earlier seen it perched on the power lines and
flying out low over the field across the road.

Several groups of birders looked for the sparrow this morning without
success as of 10:30a.m. We had a late Indigo Bunting and three Pine
Warblers, along with White-crowned Sparrow, Purple Finch, Black-throated
Green Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler. Roving hordes of juncos and
White-throated Sparrows as well.

I saw what I believe was a LeConte's Sparrow at the Albany Pine Bush
parking lot this morning. I watched it pop up onto a low split rail fence,
facing me, fifty feet away. I walked back to try to flank the bird, and got
a decent profile view for a few seconds before it flushed. It landed on a
curb and walked into the tall bluestem grass. It had distinctive ochre from
the throat that streaked into the clean white breast and underparts. There
were a few fine dark streaks on the flanks. The face seemed to be ochre as
well, with a thin line behind the eye. It also had clearly yellowish-flesh
(not pinkish) legs. I knew instantly that it was a species I hadn't seen
before. The only other possibility would be GRSP, but I think I've seen
enough of them to rule that out. Nelson’s would have been even more
orange-faced and more heavily streaked.

The bird was seen within the perimeter of the parking lot at the Discovery
Center building at 195 New Karner Rd
<https://maps.google.com/?q=195+New+Karner+Rd&entry=gmail&source=g>. The
habitat surrounding the lot is restored grassland habitat including Big
bluestem, Little bluestem, and Indian grass. When I arrived this morning
dozens of sparrows were moving around the area, mostly Chipping and
White-throated. Bird-banding operations throughout the morning turned up a
high diversity of species, but no rarities. I'm putting the word out so
other interested parties can investigate if they wish. Please be aware that
the parking lot is a busy place, and bushwhacking there is only allowed for
staff conducting work projects.

[nysbirds-l] Washington County sedge wrens

2018-07-10 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Three, possibly four sedge wrens are currently being seen/heard in the
grasslands of Washington County. One was seen yesterday by Thom McLenahan
and Scott Robinson and heard today by David Harrison from Mahaffy Road in
Argyle, about half a mile east of County Route 42. This may be the same
bird that Bruce Hoover recorded on July 7th from the nearby Alfred Z.
Solomon viewing platform on County Route 42. Another was found this
morning by David Harrison on Dowmont Road, just before the sharp curve that
goes to the farmhouse. Another bird was found on New Swamp Road (town of
Hudson Falls, I think) by Stacy Robinson, also this morning. This seems
like a very good year for this species in Upstate NY.

Re:[nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] MEW GULL Brooklyn Army Terminal

2018-03-18 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
I’m at Brooklyn Army terminal now. A combination of a peregrine and some
fast vehicles put all the Gulls up off the pier, but before they did, I was
able to scan the Gull flock carefully, and all the smaller Laruses were
definitely ring-billed. Two birders here told me that they had checked
bush terminal park without success, but I am seeing some birds that look
like they are heading north.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Northern Saw-whet & Barred Owls, Crossbills, and Eastern Chipmunks out of hibernation in Feb.!

2018-02-23 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
I saw several eastern chipmunks around Ausable Club road this morning while
looking for Pine Grosbeaks and was surprised to see them out this early
that far north. I found several red crossbills (type 3) there, as well as
roughly 56 Pine Siskins, several purple finches and red-breasted
nuthatches, and two Pine Grosbeaks perched in a tree near the Trailhead on
Lake Road.

[nysbirds-l] Flyby Swans, FBF

2017-11-25 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
I’m at Floyd Bennett and just had three swans flying over the aviation
sports complex. I was only able to get them in my binoculars for a second
before I lost them behind the building, but the bills
Seemed dark and shaped more like a Trumpeter or Tundra than a Mute. I ran
around the building but they had disappeared. They might have landed near
the Gateway Marina. (They also may well have been mute Swans seen poorly,
but this wasn’t my impression.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Poss. Great-gray Owl report - Washington County, NYhm

2017-03-06 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Three birders scoured the area this morning for several hours and came up
with nothing. It may be worth returning in the afternoon. The sighting is
unconfirmed, though, and barred owls are pretty common along that stretch.
There is some decent habitat, especially on the beginning stretch of county
route 54 just a bit north of the Llama Farm.

Pacific Slope seems to have more of a vagrancy pattern, assuming that they
really are two different species, which, as the discussion on this listserv
after the Central Park bird showed up last year suggested, may not be a
safe assumption.

[nysbirds-l] Whimbrel - west Pond

2016-07-03 Thread zach schwartz-weinstein
Hi, I just had a whimbrel fly fairly low over my head at the west pond near
the breach. Looked like it may have landed on the north side of the pond
somewhere. The Acadian flycatcher was present on the trail south of big
johns.
