[nysbirds-l] Sad News from Bush Terminal Pier Park, Brooklyn

2022-06-23 Thread Gus Keri
I believe the Osprey nest there has failed. There was no evidence of the pair
anywhere in the park and I spent more than half an hour there. I have seen at
least one Osprey each time I visited the place.

I wasn't surprised with this failure, especially after I saw a couple of people
sitting at the end of the pier (north of the nest) that is closed for public
because of the construction. In addition to those, there were a couple who were
walking on the rocks at the south side of the nest (which is fenced and
supposed to be closed to public too).

A worker at the park told me few weeks ago that people keep breaking the law
and nobody can do anything about it.

I feel sorry for this Osprey couple which wasted two and half months trying to
have a family, but they spent most of their time away from the nest and
eventually, the eggs hadn't hatched, in spite of over 73 days of intermittent
incubation.

I have two questions:

Frist: should this platform be removed completely, now that I don't anticipate
any Osprey to be able to nest there? This pair could have nested just a half
mile north of the park like what happened few years ago when a pair
successfully had a family in South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. By removing the
platform, we prevent another pair from trying and failing again.

Second: Should these eggs be collected for any research? I don't know if people
collect raptors eggs from a failed nest.

That's the Jones Beach Boys that Andrew knew. But I started birding Jones
Beach around 1982 or so. Sy was one of the first birders I knew (and he was
always happy to chat and teach). The rest of the Jones Beach group then
included Al Wollin, Neil Ward, Stephen Dempsey, Manny Levine, and Matt
Bayer. Sy was the last of that troop.

One little story that I have. A few years ago, I ran across Sy at Point
Lookout. He asked me about whether I had seen any Purple Sandpipers. I said
yes, but you have to go out on the jetty to be able to see them. To that, he
replied that "five years ago I would have done that". He was 85 when he said
that. We should all be as spry as Sy at 80 . 85 . even 90. He will be
missed.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sad News for the NY Birding Community

2021-01-18 Thread Andrew Baksh

This is a tough loss especially for folks who were close to Sy. I spoke to his
dear and loyal friend Joe Giunta today and he is taking this very hard.

Coincidentally, I had spoken to Joe on the 7th, as I was curious to know if Sy
had seen the other SNCBC (Southern Nassau Christmas Bird Count) Spotted Towhee
record which was in 1956. Joe did follow up for me with a phone call to Sy but
sadly never heard back from him.

If I am right, I think Sy was a member of the Jones Beach Boys. While I did not
roll with them, I was always impressed with the camaraderie and closeness of
the group consisting of Sy, Joe Giunta, Sam Janazzo and Pat Jones (forgive me
if I am missing any others). I had the privilege of doing one of my early
Adirondack trips as a birding rookie with the group and it was a trip filled
with lots of laughter and good birds, many of them lifers. If Sam Janazzo reads
this he will likely chuckle at the memories.

My heartfelt condolences to Sy’s family and friends. I will be thinking of him
this evening and remembering his gentleman behavior. The man known to many as
“the Dean” will be sincerely missed for his soft mannerism and his ability to
wax philosophically about practically anything.

As I have said before on this list serve. We are in some tough times and
contact is important for a lot of people. Reach out and check in on people that
you know.

learned this from his dear friend Joe Giunta, who had been in touch with Sy
regularly and made inquiries when he couldn't be reached. I understand that
a service has already been held, but I will discuss with Joe how we birders

Sy touched New York's birding community deeply. He will be missed deeply by
many, many people.

I know that Sy saw at least 402 species of birds in New York State, and just

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Sad News for the NY Birding Community

Seymour (Sy) Schiff passed away on Thursday, January 14, at the age of 93. I
learned this from his dear friend Joe Giunta, who had been in touch with Sy
regularly and made inquiries when he couldn't be reached. I understand that
a service has already been held, but I will discuss with Joe how we birders
might join in honoring him.

>From his years writing the Kingbird seasonal reports for New York City and
Long Island, to his gentlemanly and erudite omnipresence around Jones Beach,
to his more wide-ranging birding adventures later in life in Joe's company,
Sy touched New York's birding community deeply. He will be missed deeply by
many, many people.

I know that Sy saw at least 402 species of birds in New York State, and just
this morning I was thinking of encouraging and helping him to try for the
Spotted Towhee, very near his home in Baldwin. That will never happen, but I
will spend some time tonight with my memories of many birds I saw with Sy.

Dear New York Birders,

I learned yesterday that Bob May passed away on Monday.

Bob was a long-time Long Island birder and a dear friend of many. It was always
a pleasure to meet him in the field--whether it was a reunion between old
friends, or, for newer birders who had never met him before, as a positive
influence and a helpful voice (with glorious New England accent!) of

[nysbirds-l] Sad news about Sarah Elliot

2016-10-12 Thread Richard Fried
Dear Fellow Birders,

It is with sadness that I let you know that our friend Sarah Elliott passed
away on October 12th. Sarah was a longtime member of the Linnaean Society of
New York. She led nature walks in Central Park and elsewhere, and maintained
the bird sighting book in the Boathouse. She regularly issued an informative
series of Nature Notes. In addition to her passion for birds and botany, Sarah
was keenly interested in literature and jazz. For the last year Sarah was cared
for by her niece Dukeanna.

Please check the LSNY website for updated
information.

[nysbirds-l] sad news - trumepter swan

2013-01-31 Thread Luke Ormand
I have heard via Bob Kessler (who lives on Upper Lake and who first spotted
the Trumepter Swans several years ago) that the Trumepter Swan which was
shot last month has passed away under the care of the rehabber.

On an unrelated note, I received an e-mail recently about a "naturalist"
training program which will take place at the Flanders Community Center in
Flanders, NY (next to Riverhead). For anyone interested, here is the info:

[nysbirds-l] Sad News

2012-11-30 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Yesterday I learned that Paul Gillen of Southold, Long Island, died last
week. Many of you will remember Paul as the fellow who found the
Black-tailed Godwit in Eastport many years ago. Before that Paul was one of
the the first birders in the modern era to find a bona fide Franklin's
Gull, a first-year bird that spent several weeks cadging handouts in the
parking lot of the Riverhead McDonald's. For many of us, that was the first
Franklin's Gull we had seen in New York. Paul was a regular contributor
throughout the years that I compiled East End Birds. Even as his abilities
diminished in recent years, he remained active in the field and was often
the first to report the rare waterfowl of Lake Marratooka. I, for one, am
very saddened to learn of his demise even though I did not know him well.
