[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow...finally !

2018-07-09 Thread robert adamo
Today, 7/9, after being sufficiently buoyed by Mike Britt's post of 7/7,
and Karen Fung's up to date information on the "Star(s) of Shawangunk",
Patrice Domeischel and I arrived at the Grasslands at 0740, whereupon
Patrice, while stepping out of the car, announced "I hear it" ! Before
hearing the Henslow's song again, we heard and saw Grasshopper Sparrows and
Bobolinks...what a wonderful welcome ! In fact, the handrails of the
boardwalk which leads you up to the platform, held a few Grasshoppers that
looked and acted like centuries as we approached, albeit, leaving their
posts when we got to close !

Once on the platform, we continued to hear the Henslow's vocalize, but did
not see it right away. As we scanned the "ridgeline" to the south for the
bird's favored perch (a small, but prominent shrub) we noticed a similar
described shrub, somewhat closer to the platform, but picked up in the same
"field" as you worked the "ridgeline". In short order, the Henslow's
appeared on it, and proceeded to sing. It was neat to be able to see it
vocalize through the scope, and hear it's song a millisecond afterward !
During our stay (till ~ noon time) the bird left and returned to sing from
this shrub at least 6-7 times ! Among these stays, it twice shared this
perch with a Savannah Sparrow.

In addition to the blessings of the bird, the fine weather, the number of
other species, we met some fine folks ! The highly respected, Ralph Tabor
visited us, and provided us with much appreciated information re: the
Grasslands ! Toward the end of our stay, a couple from Brooklyn (Linda &
Eric Ewing) arrived in pursuit of the Henslow's. Since they didn't have a
scope, we left ours with them, while we checked out the nearby waterhole,
in hopes of seeing/hearing a family of Virginia Rails Ralph had told us
about. Although we dipped on the rails, we did hear some unusual
vocalizations coming from the nearby, well occupied Purple Martin house !
Upon returning to the platform, we were gladdened to hear of the Ewing's
success !

This specie was quite special for me - in addition to being my first in
Ulster Co. and first in N.Y.S., it is the very first I've ever seen/heard
anywhere ! The closest I've ever come to getting *Ammodramus henslowii,* was
a day late for the bird which stopped by Eric & Lorna Salzman's beautiful
woods/marsh property in E.Quogue a few years ago. Sadly, Eric is no longer
with us, but his memory is !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow at Shawangunk Grasslands NWR: comparison of audiograms

2018-05-31 Thread Karen Fung
Hi, I looked at the audio files posted on eBird, comparing Joe's file from
yesterday with the many files that were posted a year ago. The bird that
showed up yesterday sang a song with three descending notes. Last year's
bird also sang a three part song, but the pitches were in the order of
high/low/medium. I don't think this was obvious when listening to the
files, but the audiograms give visual proof. All the songs from last year,
spanning several days, show the same pattern.
What are the chances that this is a different individual? Or maybe he just
altered his song this year?

Here's a link to the audio files:

https://ebird.org/media/catalog?taxonCode=henspa&mediaType=a®ion=Ulster,%20New%20York,%20United%20States%20(US)®ionCode=US-NY-111&q=Henslow%27s%20Sparrow%20-%20Ammodramus%20henslowii

All input welcome, either here or privately.

Here is a link to my eBird checklist
https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S46165624 that contains pictures and a
recording of the Henslow's Sparrow found on Wednesday afternoon, May 30, at
the Shawangunk Grasslands NWR. It was down the Red Loop trail that starts at
the corner of the parking area and goes past the gazebo and platform. As you
go down the trail it crosses a dry channel. The bird was actively calling
and perching up about 50 feet or so past the dry channel, mainly on the

You'd be right Mike.  I used to work at the refuge when it was first formed and
did the checklist for it and Wallkill.  They used to nest there many years ago,
but have not been seen there until recently and definitely not on territory.
Very nice bird.  Let's keep our fingers crossed.

2017-05-30 Thread Donna Schulman
Henslow's Sparrow and Dickcissel continue in area by the bird blind (take
Tabor Trace Red Loop from parking lot), Dickcissel doing a loop in front of
the blind, Henslow's on the left as you approach the blind. An Upland
Sandpiper also flew in and out, according to a group of NYC birders.

Yesterday morning Denise and I drove down to the Shawangunk Grasslands National
Wildlife Refuge in Ulster County, arriving shortly after 8 in search of the
Henslow's Sparrow and Dickcissel previously posted by Tom Williams on Facebook.
With information from folks in the parking lot we headed for the south blind
and the large gathering of birders along the trail about 100 years before the
blind, all enjoying looks at the Henslow's Sparrow. After taking some photos of
this life bird for Denise, we continued to the blind and photographed the
Dickcissel, unfortunately in poor light. A bit later, the Henslow's came much
closer to the trail,in good light, and we finally got some better looks at the
Dickcissel as well. There were also numerous grasshopper sparrows and bobolinks
around, along with other species. Our ebird list is at the link below, and has
photos of the Henslow's and Dickcissel. This is a great opportunity folks...

Google map in my posting from last may help.

Leave parking lot to the south (to the right when coming into the lot from
entrance road). Take a small path (not the path to the overlook). Follow this
nearly to the property edge and follow it around to the left (east). After a
bit, there is smaller trail off the to the left again (north), where there is
a bench on the right. You can see the small, grayish blind ahead. That’s where
the Dickcissel was yesterday; Henslow’s is at a small turn in the path, maybe
20 yards before the blind. Also look for the birders.

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow

2017-05-24 Thread syschiff
Henslow's Sparrow update

This species was long a resident on the grass lands of the Saratoga
Battlefields. The staff found that the birds needed to have the grass burned or
cut for the habitat to be maintained and for them to continue to breed in the
area. So they cut the grass at the proper time of year all over. And the
sparrows disappeared. What subsequent research discovered was, the Henslow's
Sparrows breed in second and third year growth. You can't cut the grass every
year. You have to rotate your cutting.

Attempts to reintroduce this species anywhere has been mostly a total failure.
Hence, the sighting of a singing bird in the Shawangunk Grassland is an
extraordinary event. They are doing every thing right. It's a great place to
visit and it's a paradise for birders looking for grassland birds. They have
parking, viewing platforms and blinds.

The bird song is unique. They sing loudly from a clump top but are can be hard
to see. Lets not go playing songs and chasing the bird. Be patient and look.
This is a new breeding area and we need them to be successful now and for the
future.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow

2014-11-24 Thread Jean Loscalzo
Riis Park, Queens
Monday 11/ /14

Following up on earlier posts, late afternoon had 6 birders looking in the
southeastern field and edges next to the golf course. The bird was finally
located several times, and a few people had decent although quick looks.
Deborah Martin and Steve Schellenger packed it in leaving Bobby Berlingeri,
Bobby Kurtz, Eric Miller and me. As per the tiny URL link Arie Gilbert posted,
the bird was last in the upper left hand area. As it got later (after 4:15)
the bird became more active, moving around and feeding in the shorter brush
along the field edge in front of the fence. We were able to get extended close
looks, and the bird was still active at 4:50pm when we finally left.

A big THANK YOU PAT for finding this bird!

ps a reminder to check on the bridge status before going for this bird, the
Marine Pkwy Bridge was closed for the entire day today.

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow - Riis Park

2014-11-24 Thread Deborah Martin
The Henslow's Sparrow was seen at about 3:45 PM by 6 birders. All of the
information in David Klauber's post is very helpful and was accurate for what
we observed. The bird was flushed from short low grass in the center of the
field when one birder stepped very close to it. It flew to the edge of the
field on the north side bordering the golf course and remained low in the
taller grass along the anchor fence in a sandy area left of where a Mylar
balloon is caught in the grass. We never saw it fly out but did have brief
views of it that area. It may have flown through the fence to the scrub around
the golf course. Thanks to all who've posted descriptions today - both of the
area and the bridge closure.

FW: [nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow

2014-11-24 Thread David Klauber
a little more info on this bird. Henslow's is a skulker normally, and in
today's wind even more so, keeping low and scurrying between tufts of grass. It
would be (and was) easy to miss even at close range as it ducks into the grass.
When I saw it, and Bob and Ed saw it earlier, they nearly stepped on it, as it
was hiding in the tufts of grass in the middle of this open wet area. I believe
Jacob's group found it in the tall shrubs next to the golf course, and when we
left around 2:30 it flew into the taller grass west of the field, opposite the
golf course. The "field" where it's been seen is just southwest of the
southwest corner of the golf course, almost at Fort Tilden. Bob stuck a large
branch or stick in the middle of the field as a reference point. Today there
were several wet patches, so the habitat probably approached that of Henslow's
breeding territory. I have seen Henslow's before, but never as bright olive as
this bird. The olive head contrasted strongly with the brown and buff marked
back, and the eye ring was fairly prominent. Outstanding find by Pat, and for
me the best of the good run of fall rarities. And special thanks to Bob and Ed
for staying on the bird while I dealt with the traffic and bridge closing.
As noted by Arie, you have to use the bridge at Cross Bay Boulevard to get to
Riis Park

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow + @ Jacob Riis Park Queens Co.

2014-11-23 Thread Andrew Baksh
In a true Patagonia Picnic Table Effect, Pat "eagle eyed" Lindsay found a
Henslow's Sparrow near the south west corner at the Riis Park Golf course.
This is near a strip of vegetation that runs south towards the beach.

Several of us saw the bird as it moved but not the killer looks that
Lindsay got. While searching I literally almost stepped on an American
Bittern hiding in the vegetation that took off heading into the golf course.

Good luck if you go!

I always want to hear about the
possibilities quickly, rather than the certainties too late to
do anything about them.  So here is a head’s-up for birders in
  the Montezuma area.

Today we were birding at Montezuma NWR, and
had found most of the regular things that have already been
reported.  We were scoping distant shore birds from East Rd
(both yellowlegs, least and semipalmated sandpipers, 1 Stilt
Sandpiper).  I heard something in the background noise around
the road that made me take notice.  I have lots of common-bird
filters in place, and when something out of the ordinary
calls, I notice it.  It may have called twice, but I responded
eventually and asked myself, “What just called that made me
think of Henslow’s Sparrow?”  I focused my awareness on that
possibility, and when it called again I was ready.  Henslow’s
  Sparrow!!

Jay heard it, but may not have been able to
process the tiny, short call completely.  To me, it sounded
not quite the way I remembered it, with more roundness to the
tones than the dry tss-lik! I think of. But it matched
perfectly the first New York recording of the Sibley app.

We walked the road and played the song
without finding anything. But, this is a bird I know and have
history with.  I cannot say with 100% certainty that I heard a
  Henslow’s Sparrow today.  But, I’m 90% sure I did.

So, head’s up Montezuma birders!  Please
find this bird and prove me right.  Birding is such a head
game that feedback, positive or negative, can have a huge
  effect on one’s confidence.

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow - NO

2011-07-15 Thread Richard Guthrie
I stopped by the Ames site where Henslow's Sparrow had been reported.

Although likely an element of my timing (roughly 11 AM to noon), I did not
see the sparrow;

What I did see disturbed me. Is it here we go again?

I saw numerous trails that suggested that people were walking into the
grassy field from the roadside.

There were at least six separate lines of trampled grass plus one that was
heavily beaten down - suggesting that a group of people followed "single
file" into the field (as if to reduce the potential of stepping on a nest of
fledgling).

Maybe that's why I didn't see/hear the sparrows?

Re: [nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow YES

2011-07-10 Thread Arie Gilbert
Today, Jean Loscalzo and I went in search of these species, particularly
the Henslows Sparrow [HESP]. Construction delays on the GW bridge
delayed our arrival, and the Henslows was not present when we got there
ca. 11:30. We heard that others that were there earlier had had the bird.

There were numerous Bobolink in various states of plumage, and very
obvious in the field. We then went for the Uppies, got them and
returned to no HESP, and then went for lunch and to try to find the Root
Kites w/o success.

We went back and tried again at 6:30pm and heard and saw the bird in the
field as described by Peter below.

Opposite the mailbox, is a small pullout from which we scanned the
field. about 200 feet west, out in the field is a stand of wild parsnip
[ looks like a yellow queen anne's lace ] and it was upon them that the
HESP sang/called. later on, it moved closer to the road and sang from
parsnips much closer.

Curiously, before we found the HESP or it showed itself, Red-winged
blackbirds were making call notes that sounded to both our ears just
like the call of the HESP - though we were clearly able to tell that the
sounds were coming from the RWBB. Anyone who can further illuminate us
about this call note [ or mimicry ?] please do so
