Re: [obc] Cycling Accident

May I go a little OT here. A friend of mines little brother (45yrs
old), live in the blue nose province. His car insurance went up to
$4500.xx from $1500.xx this past little while. He told her he has done
nothing to deserve an increase, it is just that the courts are awarding
mega amounts and the insurance companies are getting their money back.
Do I hear ruminations that the same is coming to our province?

My advise : re AGM info. Have good lights on your bikes in the dark and wear
a helmet. All to keep the ' mystery ' insurance fee at $ 12 per person, or
lower with no claims.

For my $ 12 I would like to have the name and policy number of our OBC or
OCA Liability Insurance company. Wouldn't all of you OBC Members like to
have that on file ?

And check your Home Owners Policy for adequate liability coverage. Most
people have 1 million. Is that enough today ?

Re: [obc] Underwear for cycling/x-c skiing

2002-10-30 Thread Brian Martin
Anything will do, I have a friend who x-skis with pajamas on underneath
a wind barrier in all sorts of weather. I think you need to think
vapour barrier and you will find what you need does not have to cost an
arm and a leg. The MEC stuff against the skin with a wind proof pant
will work in all sorts of weather. Now Avery might be talking about
wicking properties of the Patagonia product, but the MEC stuff works
really well. I used to referee and play hockey in all sorts of weather
with the MEC stuff. I have even ref'd upto 6 games (with wait times
between, and going back out) and was comfortable the whole evening, the
wicking of the MEC stuff was more than sufficient. So try the cheaper
stuff first, BTW Pete Hickey rides all year and here are his tips.

Yes, you can repaint, and then paint bigger and bigger directional arrows

pamphlet vending stands at each end of the bridge (yes...with recycling bins

motorized vehicles too...)

Looking at the BIG picture, I contend that the paint has a negative impact
for riders in all other road situations...motorist get conditioned to not
learning how to pass safely. I haven't ridden the Montreal bridge

I had the pleasure to drive over the bridge today, in my recumbent
carrier :-). I was coming from the east and used the turn off on the
east side of the island. I was watching the line work and the vehicle
ahead of me, the center lane was the lane the Quebec side to Ontario was
using. The car ahead of me suddenly stopped and almost hit the curb,
the car in the other lane did not allow him to merge, I hit the binders
really hard and then noticed our lane had died. The cars behind almost
did the same thing, so that was my experience to get there. On the way
back the left and turning lane to the parkway, I waited 3 complete
cycles before we got the green. Is this a new experiment.

Brian

PS the 3 lanes + bicycle lanes looked very wide indeed.

tell these kids to ensure that their straps are out of the way of the
front wheels spokes, which is what will show them that they should be
wearing a helmet.

H, I know lets live in a society where we have rules which we
teach our kids that we have to obey all the time. Then lets get in our
car and tell the kids that the rules for driving do not matter as it
must be a suggested speed on the highways and roadways. Or that the one
way directional arrow at the entry way to the school parking lot is
only for the other guy. Then we wonder why the helmets come off, the
stop signs get blown, the red lights mean go etc. Why not have rules
that the police can and will enforce and which we will obey.

break down the most often, but then, all that was pre-Shimano !

Ha Ha Ha. Good one Les. As someone who has been a tour leader for the
MS tour, and has friends in high places (just ask questions to
mechanics). You find that not a lot of breakeage occurs away from the
normal spokes and flat tires (some times ripped tires). The worst I
have witnessed was a tire we booted with a Canadian dollar bill (we did
not have any Yankee money to get full value :-) ). Last year there was
an 11 year old girl on bike older than her and weighed more than my sag
van, rode into Kingston on one gear as shifter cable broke.

Re: [obc] Aching neck

2002-04-04 Thread brian martin

If you are talking about getting rid of neck pain, add in butt pain and back aches.
Then buy a recumbent :-).

Hello all,

I too remember getting an aching neck, but found that once the bike
was properly set for me, my neck was far better if not pain free.
Seems to me that it's certainly an issue of reach to the handlebar,
and, the need to limit your elbows being locked out. Remember, you
need some flex and articulation in your elbows to retain a relaxed
riding posture, thereby absorbing road shock transmitted through the
front wheel and fork. Once I can get my elbows more relaxed, I find
my shoulders drop to a more relaxed position; with the added benefit
of more even and relaxed breathing. [and yes, I like this word
'relaxed']

The other thing I've found really helps to stay off an aching neck is
to put on additional roles of cork handlebar tape. I know it can be
relatively expensive, but the Profile brand tape is great, because
it's thick. With two or three roles on the bar, and a good pair of
cycling gloves with gel padding, I've found neck pain to be a thing
of the past.

In order to retain a uniform feeling on the bar, I found strips of
cork tape placed longitudinally along the main riding points of the
bar [the outer side of the first bend in the bar when viewed from the
stem out] under the outer most role, to work wonderfully. In other
words, place even old strips of cork tape that would otherwise be
headed for the garbage, longitudinally on top of your present cork
tape that aligns with your favoured riding points along the bar, and
on top of this tape, place your outer most role of additional cork
tape.

Using this method, I think I've actually been able to get on a good
four roles of tape; over the years. ;-)

Works for me, and like the tape on the bar; I'm sticking to it!

Bill

Was the original intent of this post as a humourous poke at someone who mistakenly

I agree it gets worse and worse each year, but Dave rode the parkway just a
few days ago, and it's still buckledits still cold. When the weather
gets warm, the buckles become just cracks. No doubt it progressively gets
worse, but I think finding a new venue is just a bit premature.

Asticou, 2km loop? that will never work for a 15 km TT.

Re: [obc] NYT Article on bicycle helmets

2001-08-06 Thread Brian Martin

I recall a study that found cars equipped with air bags are also found to be
involved in more accidents - which adds weight to the argument that safety devices
increase risk-taking behaviour.

I for one do not agree but have my own evidence of the above statements. When I
bought my first Caravan I had the
ABS option installed. It gave me the comfort of knowing that I could stop on a dime
in terrible weather, well it sure did
work well. I could stop in the slipperiest winter conditions, straight as an arrow...
in the middle of the intersection. I am
sure that w/o the ABS I would not be driving so aggressively in winter time, and when
I did I would end up in the middle
of the intersection after doing a few doughnuts.

Another issue that I do not think was addressed in the article is whether there are
more cyclists on the road, which would cause an apparent increase in cycling
injuries.
I will quote Bruce Timmermans here, there are more people riding bikes in the middle
of the winter time, than there was
when I first came to Canada in the summer times in the 60's.

Putting a kid on a Can-Bike course is probably a lot less effort. A lot more bang
for the buck too.
My twelve year old has been involved in three kids Can-Bike courses but I still do not
feel I could let him ride to school
because there is still no fear/awareness of the vehicular conditions around him. Yes
it is suburbia where we live, and
the idiots who conduct their cages must think (if they get off the phone long enough)
that whenever some one is on the
road it means that they are an expert road user, and they give no extra care in lane
positioning.

Mine two!

My two cents worth.

Re: [obc] Tuesday night Tour 10/07/01

2001-07-11 Thread Brian Martin

This worked out very well and I plan to use it in future. After the Rideau
Lakes Tour any riders can
ride in a fast group by organising prior to leaving or by riding off the
front of the pack.

Even the fast group was not fast enough for 4 riders as they blasted out of our group
and
got home 5-10 minutes in front of us.

This week we did Metcalfe. by way of Riverside East, Smyth Rd, Russell Rd,
Baseline to Mitch Owen then right on 27 to Metcalfe. The faster group was at
Metcalfe when we arrived and over munchies and drink I conferred with Tim to
insure that they knew the way we were returning. Return West on 6 to Highway
31, North on 31 one block to John Quinn, then left onto Parkway Rd which
becomes Apple Orchard Rd, right on Manotick Station Rd , right on Mitch Owen
to Bowsville Road, cross Lietrim to Alert Rd and returned to Billings Bridge
by Airport Parkway.

Total km's from Billings Bridge and return 67 km's.
I guess my 42 miles is because my odo is set wrong :-).

approaching thunderstorms as I say lighting on the way home.

Why would you say lightning, I think I saw some. ROTFL.

PS after kids soccer season is over more Tuesdays for me.

Re: [obc] RLCT reactions

2001-06-11 Thread Brian Martin

Good tour all around, make sure that the kudo's get to the XM-49er's for
their excellent work. I do not know what tour route this person is talking
about 20% being of the female persuasion but I would guesstimate it more to
be along the lines of 40 to 50 %. As someone who saw a lot of the riders,
on the two major routes I would guess that the Challenge route would have a
very low participation (something about testosterone/hills), and the cruise
because the mechanics/sags were not there, which is the same reason I would
only ride the Classic. Two years ago coming back from Kingston I had a
camel back on a hot Sunday and filled it 3 times (North Crosby, Perth
Ashton) so that year I carried water instead of money (but never again,
rookie mistake).Speaking of young un's, there was a father who brought
a 12 year old girl on the ride and let her ride it independently, the
co-sagger with me made us keep an eye on her, since she dropped her
friends (17 15 and an adult) constantly, so she was always out of there
sight. She absolutely had no idea of riding in traffic evidenced by things
I saw her do ( and did right after I told her what and why what she did
could get her killed). I would like to suggest that the RLCT not encourage
non-traffic aware children to ride. Unless they have had group riding
clinics or can-bike lessons.
