[onap-discuss] Last Call for Doodle Poll & Clarity on where in North America we will hold the May Developer Gathering

2017-03-31 Thread Phil Robb
Hello ONAP TSC and Development Community:

The doodle poll is beginning to clearly show that we have a preference the
first week of May. If you haven't voted in the doodle poll yet and you
want to, you still have until 9:00 PDT this evening to do so here:
https://atflinuxfoundation.doodle.com/poll/wkuuf42dex69bkve

Assuming that the first week of May continues to be the preference, the
last question we need to answer is "where in North America?".

Vancouver, Canada had been mentioned as possibly being easier/faster for
those needing a Visa than having the event in New Jersey, U.S.A.. However,
based on these threads:

https://lists.onap.org/pipermail/onap-tsc/2017-March/50.html
https://lists.onap.org/pipermail/onap-tsc/2017-March/31.html

... and additional feedback that I've received from China-based community
members, New Jersey seems to be a better choice because many already have
U.S. visas, where they do not have current Canadian visas, and more experts
from AT will be on hand to walk the community through the ECOMP code base
and answer questions.

So, given that we have a willing host for the event (AT in New Jersey)
and it appears a good number of Chinese participants are able to attend, I
suggest we plan on holding the event in New Jersey, U.S.A..

We understand that some in the community won't be able to attend this event
for a variety of reasons. No matter how hard we try, we are never able to
accommodate everyone's preference. So instead we find the time(s), and
place(s) that seem to accommodate a critical mass of the community and we
provide remote access as best we can for those unable to attend in person.

Again, the doodle poll closes at 9:00pm PDT this evening in approximately 3
hours. Once that has concluded we will send out more information on the
event's logistics starting with Invitation Letter information first thing
Monday morning.

Please feel free to provide your feedback and questions.

Best,

Phil.

[onap-discuss] [ONAP EXTERNAL OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY COORDINATOR] Election Kickoff

2017-05-11 Thread Phil Robb
Hello ONAP Community Members:

Please consider this email as the kickoff of the ONAP External Open Source
Community Coordinator Election process. A description of the role can be
found on the ONAP Technical Community Coordinator's page here:
https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/Technical+Community+Coordinators

Please recall, as stated in section 5.2.2.2 of the ONAP TSC Charter, any
member of the technical community is eligible to run for this position. It
is not exclusively reserved for TSC Members. However, only TSC members are
eligible to vote when choosing among the potential candidates. This
position serves at the pleasure of the TSC and TSC Chairperson.

There are two phases to the election process. The first is the Nomination
Phase where community members may nominate themselves for the position of
"ONAP External Open Source Community Coordinator". Once the Nomination
Phase has concluded, we will enter the Election Phase, where all ONAP TSC
Members are invited and encouraged to vote on the candidates whom have been
nominated.

Timing:

   - Nominations open May 11th, 2017.
   - Nominations close May 17th at 9:00pm Pacific Time
   - Voting begins May 18th, 2017
   - Voting Ends May 24th, 2017 at 9:00pm Pacific Time

If you wish to nominate yourself for the position of "ONAP External Open
Source Community Coordinator", please respond-all to this email with your
picture (headshot), biography, and statement of interest on why you would
wish to hold the position. I wlll post this information to the wiki prior
to the start of the election so that everyone in the technical community is
able to become familiar with the candidates.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,

Phil.

[onap-discuss] How to best populate Contributors and Committers in newly formed ONAP projects

2017-05-15 Thread Phil Robb
tributions will stagnate waiting for review to the frustration of
the Contributors on the project. Conversely, having far more Committers on
a project than contributions to review will mean that many Committers will
be in-active simply due to no work load. The "right" number of initial
Committers is project dependent, but a good rule of thumb is to start in
the 3 to 6 range, and expand beyond that if needed or desired.

- It is common for individuals to identify themselves as initial Committers
on the project then realize that they did not have the time, ability, or
expertise to properly perform the role. Please self-evaluate your
capabilities for the role before suggesting yourself for it. Similarly,
ONAP project Committers and PTLs should review their committer list on a
periodic basis (quarterly or semi-annually) to cull the Committer list of
in-active Committers.

- Individuals who initially identify themselves as Contributors on a
project can be promoted to Committer by showing their expertise in the code
base through quality code contributions and technical insights on the
mailing lists, irc channels, bugzilla entries, etc. Please note that
active Contributors on a project can have significant influence in the
project from the code and comments they make.

- Given that seed-code often comes from a single, or small number of
companies, it is likely that many projects will have initial Committers
from a single, or small number of companies. In those special situations,
the Committers for the project have additional responsibilities:
1) These Committers should be actively searching for Contributors in their
project that show the aptitude and interest to become Committers and work
to mentor these individuals to become Committers on the project as quickly
as possible.
2) These Committers must take special care to socialize and receive
feedback on any significant change to the code base that they are
considering. It is important that the Committers of a project reflect the
goals and interests of all community members, not just the goals and
interests of their employer.

- Once a project has been formed and the initial list of Committers has
been identified and agreed upon, those Committers will need to elect a PTL
to serve as the single point-of-contact for the project to the rest of the
community.

Please provide your additional thoughts to the ones I've provided above.
It will be helpful to all if we can come to consensus on how best to
initially populate the ONAP projects so that there is a general
understanding of the criteria used and it's consistent application across
all projects. Again, our goal should be to get the right set of competent
resources in place to begin with, and have the expectation that new
Committers will be promoted within the projects shortly after we begin
development in earnest.

Best,

Phil.

Re: [onap-discuss] Technical Deep Dive on Tuesday May 2nd

2017-05-09 Thread Phil Robb
Hi Eric:

All the presentations from last week that have been posted are located
under "Presentations" on the wiki here:
https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/Presentations

However, it doesn't look like all of the presentations have been posted yet
by their authors.

All presenters from last week's event in New Jersey, please upload your
presentations to the link above so others in the community have access to
them. PDF format is usually preferable for posting unless you specifically
want people to be able to edit your slides (for architecture overlays,
etc.).

Best,

Phil.

Re: [onap-discuss] [onap-tsc] Tentative July ONAP Developers Face-to-Face Meeting

2017-06-19 Thread Phil Robb
Hi Alla:

Yea, that's a somewhat scary chart. Thanks to you and your team for
putting it together. It will be a great cross reference for Gildas as we
get initial project plans that include their cross-project dependencies.

Gildas, is there somewhere you would like to keep this diagram for
reference?

Best,

Phil.

[onap-discuss] Final Preparation For ONAP Project Creation Reviews For June 8th and 9th

2017-06-06 Thread Phil Robb
Hello ONAP Developer Community:

I am looking very forward to seeing many of you tomorrow at our second Face
to Face meeting hosted by China Mobile in Beijing.

We will be attempting to get through as many Project Creation Reviews as
possible during this two day event. Given that we have around 30 project
proposals and only about 6.5 hours allotted for the reviews we are going to
need to be very efficient with our time.

We have created a wiki page to break-down the Creation Review time slots
into 15 minute intervals. It is located here:
https://wiki.onap.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=6590432

If you are a "Project Contact" for an ONAP project, and you want your
project to be reviewed during Face to Face meeting, please find an empty
time slot on that wiki page and enter your information there.
** Please remember to have reviewed the "Initial Project Proposal Feedback
>From The TSC" page and ensure that the questions/comments raised there have
been addressed in your project proposal.
https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/Initial+Project+Proposal+Feedback+From+the+TSC

For ONAP TSC members, please re-review both the Project Feedback page, and
the Project Proposal page for each project to be reviewed in preparation of
the Creation Reviews.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,.

Phil.

Hello ONAP Community Members:

Please consider this email as the kickoff of the ONAP Release Manager

There are two phases to the election process. The first is the Nomination

"ONAP Release Manager". Once the Nomination Phase has concluded, we will
enter the Election Phase, where all ONAP TSC Members are invited and
encouraged to vote on the candidates whom have been nominated.

Timing:
• Nominations open May 31st, 2017.
• Nominations close June 7th at 9:00pm Pacific Time
• Voting begins June 8th, 2017
• Voting Ends June 15th, 2017 at 9:00pm Pacific Time

If you wish to nominate yourself for the position of "ONAP Release
Manager", please respond-all to this email indicating your interest to
stand for election.

All nominees are invited to provide their Picture, Biography, and Statement
of Intent on the election wiki page so that members of the TSC, and the
community, can learn more about the candidate and their intentions for the
role of Release Manager. The nominee ordering on the election wiki page
will be in ascending alphabetical order by last name.

[onap-discuss] Schedule Changes for the Paris-Saclay Face to Face meeting - Thursday Sept: 28th

2017-09-27 Thread Phil Robb
Hello:

For those wanting to attend sessions at the Paris Saclay developer event
today, we have made some schedule changes from yesterday. To accommodate
the travel schedules of some of the Project Technical Leaders and TSC
members, we've moved the Amsterdam M4 Milestone review to begin at 10am CET
and run until 3pm CET with a break for lunch between 11:30am and 12:30pm
CET. For the full schedule please see the wiki page here:
https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/Agenda+for+M4+Review

To accommodate this change in the M4 timing, we've recently moved sessions
that had been in those slots to other times during the day. Please double
check the Event wiki page for updates on the Thursday sessions that you
want to attend.

https://wiki.onap.org/display/DW/ONAP+Paris+Event+Schedule+September+25-28%2C+2017

Sorry for this last minute change.

Best,

Phil.

Re: [onap-discuss] Proposed Projects for ONAP...

2017-10-17 Thread Phil Robb
Hi Alex:

My suggestion would be:

a) If a change or feature being considered would naturally fit within an
existing project, then no, there is no new project proposal for such work.
Instead, it would be documented and approved as part of the Beijing Release
Plan for the existing project.
b) If the change or feature is something totally new and does not naturally
fit as an extension of an existing project, then, yes, a new project
proposal should be created using the the same project-proposal process and
template used when we started ONAP located on this wiki page [0].

Phil.

[onap-discuss] Linux Foundation Networking Projects Informational Update

2017-11-02 Thread Phil Robb
Hello Open Source Networking Project Developers:

The Linux Foundation is proud and humbled to host such a collection of
critical and influential open source networking projects for enterprise,
cloud, and carriers alike. Over the past 5 years these projects have
formed, grown, and matured into key infrastructure components on which
tomorrow’s networking solutions are based.

Through this journey, members across various networking projects have
requested alignment of the business governance and a greater opportunity
for technical leverage and collaboration. To that end, the Linux
Foundation has embarked on a plan to provide a structure that allows for
aligned governance & cross project collaboration while maintaining the
technical independence of all projects.

To explain this exciting opportunity, answer questions, and get your
feedback, we are hosting a pair of Webinars next week on Nov. 6th, and
7th. If you’ve been hearing about “Harmonization”, and/or “Umbrella”
activities and want to understand where we are with those initiatives,
please join us for this Webinar.

meeting invitations, please create your own calendar event from the

[onap-discuss] ONS Registration Discount for active developers and leadership

2018-01-26 Thread Phil Robb
Hello ONAP community:

Active developers and project leadership are strongly encouraged to
participate in the ONS event. Monday and Tuesday will be exceptionally
valuable and the rest of the week can be used to either learn about
something new going on in the industry and/or continue the discussions and
work that are started on Monday and Tuesday.

To facilitate as much developer participation as possible, we have arranged
for a 50% (ie $600 for the early-bird registration) discount to individuals
meeting any one of the following criteria:

- You are an active contributor to ONAP with a gerrit ID and have submitted
a patch within the last 6 months...and prior to receiving this email.

- You are an active committer and have reviewed a code contribution within
the past 6 months and prior to receiving this email.

- You are a current TSC member

- You are a current PTL

- You are a Subcommittee Chairperson

- You are the ONAP Release Manager.

If you satisfy one of the criteria above, please do the following to
register for ONS

   - Please click here

<https://www.regonline.com/registration/checkin.aspx?EventId=2087601=0==1>
to
   register for the conference
   - Select "Attendee Registration"
   - Enter the discount code: *ONSDVE18*

My team will be reviewing everyone that uses this code, so please don't use
it if you don't qualify. We will void any registration made that does not

Best regards and I look forward to seeing everyone at ONS,

Phil.

[onap-discuss] Clarifying the plan for developer gathering at ONS

2018-01-23 Thread Phil Robb
Hello ONAP developers and TSC members:

I wanted to provide some clarity on the activities and timeframe we have to
gather during ONS.

The developer event during ONS week will be from 8:00am to 6:00pm on
Monday, March 26th, and 8:00am to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 27th. From
requests we have received we had also been investigating the possibility to
extend the event into the proceeding Sunday, but we've determined that such
an extension is not going to be possible. That said, we still have the
Monday/Tuesday time for formal presentations, as well as break out rooms
and a developer lounge for continued meetings, discussions, and hacking at
ONS during the rest of the week.

As we've mentioned before, we would like to take advantage of the fact that
the communities from the different projects will be in the same place at
the same time. As such, we encourage you to propose sessions that can
further cross-collaboration among the LFN projects. We also recognize that
there are plenty of project-specific topics that need to be discussed.
Please also propose those sessions for this event.

With the LFN formally announced today, we are working to get the LFN wiki
site up and running as quickly as possible. One of the first uses for this
site will be the location for submitting your proposed talks and
presentations for the developer event at ONS. We apologize that it is not
up quite yet but it will be up within the next 2 or 3 days.

Once the site is up, Ray Paik (cc-ed) will send out an email to all
communities on where to find it along with a call-for-presentations for you
to post your discussion and presentation topics. Between February 9th and
February 15th, we will convene the TAC representatives from the LFN
projects to review the submissions and to form an outline/framework for the
developer event, giving time for cross-project discussions,
project-specific sessions, and a TAC meeting. From there, we will work
with each project TSC to prioritize project-specific sessions during the
event.

I am looking forward to this first-of-its-kind event and the breadth and
depth of discussions we will have during this week. Please be preparing
your topics over the coming days and submit them to the LFN wiki once it is
live.

Best regards,

Phil.

[onap-discuss] Developer Activities at the beginning of the 2018 Open Source Networking Summit

2018-03-13 Thread Phil Robb
Hello LFN Community Members:

*Given that ONS this year is the first opportunity to get many developers
from our key open source networking projects together, I’d like to map out
what we have planned and invite you to participate in what will surely be a
very productive event with many opportunities for collaborating on a myriad
of technical topics. On Saturday and Sunday (3/24, and 3/25) there is an
Infrastructure and CI/CD workshop held by members of OPNFV, OpenDaylight,
OpenStack, ONAP, FD.io and other communities. This is a small gathering of
key stakeholders responsible for CI/CD efforts across those projects. This
event is at full registration and is not accepting any additional attendees
at this time. On Sunday (3/25), Monday (3/26) afternoon, and Tuesday (3/27)
morning, the OpenDaylight project is holding their Florine Release
Developer Design Forum (DDF). Topics for the ODL DDF have been collected
on this wiki page
<https://wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/LN/OpenDaylight+Florine+Developer+Design+Forum>.
The agenda for the DDF is being created by members of the ODL TSC and the
sessions will be posted to the ONS Schedule.
format of the ODL DDF is generally: - Sunday - Deep technical topics only
relevant to OpenDaylight Developers- Cross Campus 800 Wilshire Blvd Los
Angeles, CA 90017 Walking directions <https://goo.gl/maps/JLvEQ2ZPPGS2> -
Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning - Follow-on topics from the Sunday
sessions, plus new sessions that are relevant to either other LFN projects,
other downstream open source projects, or end users. Please keep an eye on
the above wiki page and agenda to track topics that are of interest to
you.Monday morning, the LFN communities will come together for a series of
joint sessions with topics affecting several if not all of the projects in
LFN. Topic areas for this portion of the Developer Forum include: - Cross
Project Testing, Integration, CI/CD, documentation tooling, etc.- Open
Standards and LFN Open Source Projects including MEF, IETF, ETSI, and
others.- Container Networking- Virtual Network Functions (VNF) Onboarding,
Lifecycle Management, Testing, etc.- Network Operating Systems (NOSs)- AI &
ML work that is starting to take shapeThe Call for Topics for this portion
of the event is over, but if you’d like to see what was submitted for
consideration, please take a look here
<https://wiki.lfnetworking.org/display/LN/LFN+Developer+Forum+Plenary+Session+Proposals>.
The accepted sessions have been published on the ONS website and can be
found here
<https://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/open-networking-summit-north-america-2018/program/schedule/>.
If you have a topic that you strongly feel belongs in this section but it’s
not represented, please contact me at pr...@linuxfoundation.org
<pr...@linuxfoundation.org>Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning there are
technical breakout sessions focused on ONAP, OPNFV, and OpenDaylight (as I
mentioned above). Sessions in these breakouts will be focused on the
current technical discussions occurring within each of those communities.
Within these sessions, we are also encouraging topics that may be of
interest to one or more of the other LFN projects. An example of this would
be ONAP’s use of OpenDaylight and any potential requests those communities
may have of each other regarding future development and/or testing. In
addition, FD.io is having a Mini Summit during the same time frame. The
Call-For-Topics for these project-focused events are located at the links
below. Please review these proposals at your earliest opportunity to see
the topics for discussion during this unprecedented event.OpenDaylight

Tuesday morning from 8:00am to 9:00am PDT will be the first Linux
Foundation Networking (LFN) project Technical Advisory Council (TAC) face
to face meeting. The TAC is a new governance body formed at the creation
of the LFN umbrella project and they are tasked with aiding in the
coordination and cross-collaboration of the open source networking projects
within LFN. In this meeting the TAC will provide an overview of topics and
decisions since LFN was launched as well as lead a session meant to uncover
and highlight the most important cross-project initiatives that should be
started/continued, funded and tracked as part of our collective 2018 Goals
and Objectives. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have
questions or comments on this event. I look forward to seei
