Debian repository for AOO

in a Debian repository, beyound the debianization of AOO, at
SourceForge[1]. Unhappyly, he was blocked because the excessive direct
access in project space, so we need a space to share this repository.
I think that can use my userspace @apache.org.
Is acceptable to do this? Can I share this repo in people.apache.org?

Exact, Rob. My doubt is to eat bandwidth and, as a good practice, i

Re: [OT] AOO in Telecenter

2012-05-17 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

2012/5/17 Louis Suárez-Potts lui...@gmail.com:
This is good! does it continue the activity of earlier years?

Yes. Exist a decrease because the gov is passing the maintaining
effectively to society, but some government programs like GESAC[1],
yet continue. The difference from this program to a telecenter is that
the internet is provided through satelite link, in places where
haven't cable.
[1]http://www.gesac.gov.br/

Wow. And will it be called Apache OpenOffice? And be in BR-PT? Can you also
 give us a
sense of how many people will be reached (able to use) by these enhancements?

Yes. Remember that BrOffice was killed after they rescued the users
for them, and after started a FUD campain against this name.

However, Yes, will be over pt-BR and with name Apache OpenOffice.

Also, in case people don't know, would you be so kind as to explain what a
 Telecenter is?

In Brasil started a many years ago in a moviment from organized
society to make places with free access to computers with many apps
and internet. After, this idea grew to a national plan, multiplying
around the country, including free computing courses and digital
inclusion for low income population.

Yes. Perhaps the telecentros can be persuaded to help out with the effort
 required? (They
may already be doing so, of course.)

No. Was a asking from one of project coordinators about this. Is
possible we help? IMO, is understand more some points and adjust it in
the launchpad.org space.

2012-05-10 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

2012/5/10 Albino Biasutti Neto biasut...@gmail.com:
About: br.openoffice.org is redirected to openoffice.org/pt-br

One explanation first. In brazilian Internet, we use the final .br
in domain names, following the Domains Internet rules, to indicate the
country.

So, for us, is natural think br.anysite.org instead of pt-br.anysite.org .

 The primary / *first*: openoffice.org/pt-br

Albino, IMO, we can use pt-br.oo.o as a translated clone of EN site,
respecting some localized issues, like lists.

 Create pt-br.openoffice.org (secondary) ? Because it's similar
 openoffice.org/pt-br

No. pt-br.oo.o == oo.o/pt-br

The redirected br.openoffice.org to openoffice.org/pt-br, Ok!

Well, this is a good question (looking by marketing side), but i don't
know from localization side, where br == breton language in language
ISO code.

My 2 cents...

Hi

And same here.  An official project account should be linking back to
the project website, not to www.escritoriolivre.org.

Rob, remember that we *haven't* infra yet. When we have a pt-br list,
naturally we will use it.

I understand that is necessary to have all efforts more close possible
related to AOO, but in many times, we haven't this velocity and this
can't be a barrier for new volunteers/promoters, IMO.

And i think that this was a good example in OOo, where we had freedom
to start our regional group, promoting the product and grew because
hadn't a similar space in Oracle.

In other hand, we can (re)discuss this question here.

Right! My question was more about one (of many) advantage (or
fallacies) of LibO use, where they said that with their code you have
more freedom, where in true, haven't a QA in good state for support
more that the final users. Or, in other words, isn't a good strategy
to who wish to do a software evolution or integrate new features
because haven't a legal clear environment, as Rob said (if i

And how you said, Dennis, is more a curiousity point that effectivelly

Hi

2012/4/25 drew d...@baseanswers.com:
I'm just curious - what do you feel you can do with openoffice.org.br
that you could not do with openoffice.apahce.org/br, for instance?

Drew, when we had BrOffice.org/OpenOffice.org.br over our
infrastructure, we did a social network page where we had:
* news - a clipping service about OOo/BrOo/ODF in Brasil and around
the world, translated for pt-BR for our users;
* incubation - for new small and localized projects, like our
spellchecker, thesaurus, templates for brazilian general documents,
etc. In final of BrOffice, we had ~10 incubated projects (that for us
are *BIG* projects);
* User group - I developed a different way to promote Broo/OOo here,
with a logic to promote the opensource and our product;
* wiki - for general things.

Looking from a promotion/marketing vision, using a CMS like Drupal, we
learned a lot how is possible use the social net for present and
involve new users and volunteers. In transition for LibO, was more a
lot of good things (to do and not) looking this strategy.

But returning for your question, what i can do that not in apache
infra? I can install a CMS, with a different focus (more sellable),
that edit text files arround a VCS. This way, (IMHO) effectively isn't
a good way to receive contribution from
communication/publicity/grafical volunteers.

But one thing that i think with my self, was if our strategy was
considered waste for some there (libo), why we got ~10M of users? My

strings in the menu bar are in english, and when i open a dialog, it

Hi

2012/4/5 Andrea Pescetti pesce...@apache.org:
Great! And since we are now starting an Italian translation of
 http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/TestCases/
 how should we manage it?

Well... i saw in next email that you already discovered the solution. ;-)

to allow translation: will I just need to put
 {{OrigLang|QA/TestCases}}
as first row in the original page?

Exactly. And when you open a derivated page (future translated page),
you need to change {{OrigLang|Title in English}} by {{Lang|Translated
Title for you Language}}.

By the way, if I create a new page I see a huge banner pointing to
 http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Help:Translating which is probably
 outdated now.

More some things, Andrea:

1) Add a [[Category:New]] to map what are be produced;
2) Add a [[Category:IT]] to map this page as a Italian page.
3) Enter in this page[1] and create it.
[1]http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Category:IT

Uff... i saw now that the steps 2 and 3 is ok. Congratulation!

Ah! You forgot that add [[Category: Quality Assurance]] in your translated page.

In this case, since it's all new stuff, I think we can safely assume
contributions (and our translation) are under the Apache License.

Is necessary to track all pages and see the status of them about the
license. I will study how can do it easily.

[3]http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Template:Lang

With some adjusts in CSS and the support of infra team (thanks guys!),
is finished.

Now, we can start the production of main pages (en) and its
translations. But before to continue, i see two points to treat: what
is usable and the license.

I think that have lots of pages outdated and without value (at this
time), so we could filter what is interesting or not.

And about the license, have PDL and CC there (and i have doubts if
haven't more some thing). What i think is that need to converge for a
common license.

I read one or two hundred of emails, and really not found a decision
or consensus. Is my mistake or are this the facts?

[WIKI] Confusion about wikis and multilingual wiki

2012-04-02 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

I read all emails (possible) about our wikis, but not found the logic
of when use one or other wiki - cwiki or mediawiki (what caused my
mistake when i tried to contribute to localization procedure page).
When i see propositions for project goes to cwiki, and procedures
(like localization) to mediawiki. IMHO, after try many softwares, i
was obliged in to agree that the userfriendly and useful interface of
mediawiki for final user or not technical volunteer.

My doubt is what is the logic to write in one or other wiki?

In other hand, what is the destination of content in mediawiki? Can we
reuse, organize and update there content? This question bring the
second point: multilingual wiki.

Looking the localization process, we already have some translations
and i not understand why we haven't a localization toolbar in our
pages (a bar in top of page, where we can select the base language).

If we have interesting in continue working with mediawiki, i can help
in manage the content with focus to give us a good information
architecture and multilingual support.

mediawiki), have a vertical list.

But take attention in pt-BR link. I translated the page, so have a

Working over the CSS file of Mediawiki, we can adjust better this ISO

Re: Regional AOO sites [was: Re: openoffice.fm]

2012-03-29 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

2012/3/28 Rob Weir robw...@apache.org:
We have the ability to host such sites here at Apache, as subdomains of the
openoffice.org domain.  For example, http://de.openoffice.org is for
German.  It then redirects to http://www.openoffice.org/de/ which is a
subdirectory of our web site's content tree.

Yes, that is (practically) the same thing that before.

If a website is done that way, then project committers have direct access
to checking in changes, via the CMS or Subversion.  Other contributors can
 submit patches.

I see different, Rob, why in this way is good to maintain a core
pages, like in Debian (where i help too) that all content are under
CVS using WML, giving a very good support to manage and see how old is
a translation. A example is this page[1].
[1]http://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/pt#outdated

 Can we follow this strategy?

 Which strategy? Calling something BrOffice?

To have a regional site out of Apache's infra.

For a website hosted at Apache, as part of the openoffice.org website, the
 CMS is available by default.

humm... a Wiki can be considered as CMS, but isn't easy or with same
resources/features that a communicative site. But with this phrase i
understand that here isn't the correct place to discuss this, and yes
in mkting list. I will do it.

It is also certainly possible to have your own website, external to Apache,
and run by local volunteers.  But it would be important to choose a domain
name that did not imply that it was an official OpenOffice website.

As BrOffice, always became clear that was a *community* website, and
was a strategy to bring more volunteers and promote the product, like
a adaptation land before to jump for international project. We can
receive good efforts from a non-english community speakers inside each
country/region, finding people that can to do this bridge (or
facilitator) for AOO project.

The simplest thing, I think, would be to host your website at Apache,
something like http://br.openoffice.org.  Would that work?

As i said, I see fine to translate the portal for all languages, like
in Debian, but when we start to bring news, localized material (or
more specific like spreadsheets based in a local law), isn't
interesting to share. Others, like presentation templates, i agree
that is interesting to converge and to join.

However, i will rewrite this email in mkting list.

Claudio

 ristoi@Uusbuntu ~/AOOWDir $ cat en-US.sdf fi.sdf old.sdf

File fi.sdf was localize.sdf but when it fails I just change name. No help
 for that.

Sorry, Risto. For this step, you need to do:

$ wget http://people.apache.org/~jsc/sdf/en-US.sdf
$
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/incubator/ooo/trunk/extras/l10n/source/fi/localize.sdf?revision=1229431view=co
-o fi.SDF

Then you will have the template (en_US) more the old translation
(fi) in the same directory, so you can merge in an unique file.

$ cat en-US.sdf fi.sdf  fi.old.sdf

After, convert in PO files.

$ oo2po --source-language=en-US -l fi -i fi.old.sdf fi

This command will extract the msgid from en-US part and msgstring from
fi part. When one or other haven't its pair, return a error, jumping
the file. The new created dir called fi will be your TM.

So, get the POT files and run the automatic translation, if your
translate tool have this feature. At final, is revise what are marks
as fuzzy and fill what is empty.

Yes, what is natural. It happens because haven't the pair
msgid/msgstr, or in other words, have only a msgid from en without a

It is ok only when oo2po find a msgid in en with its msgstr in fi,

Hi

2012/3/14 Rob Weir robw...@apache.org:
 2) Domain name openoffice.fm

Both are likely confusing to the consumer and falsely imply the
identity and source of their goods.

BTW, I created a place in Bugzilla to track things like this:

 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/enter_bug.cgi?product=trademark

Rob, a NL related question: if someone of us bring up a website for
regional/local group, in native language, how do you will see this
act?

A example was here, in Brazil. At begin, the openoffice.org.br was
with us, and we created a portal with Drupal, talking in brazilian
portuguese all news about ODF/OOo in our country and the world (with
the respective translation, when was the case). At final, in function
of the trademark problems with openoffice, we changed to broffice,
but always clearly linked with main project.

Can we follow this strategy?

A CMS can give us a more flexibility to work. Is possible? What you
(and Apache) think about?

Hi

if possible they can work offline, submit patches ...

As I mentioned it is always good to start with a iCLA as first step to
 become a committer over time.

I think that we can do this two things in separated ways, Jürgen.
Maybe a new volunteer wish only write a new document or help in
translation, without the flag of committer.

Do you think this people have a problem with that?

I think that they haven't problem with iCLA, but yet not is the way (IMHO).

We can treat this question with a different approach. Please, give me
the chance to bring a good strategy that i saw and i believe to be a
good way.

In translation part of launchpad, the forge of Canonical, when you
register in there system you need to agree with the terms, where says
that all contributions in that system will be licensed under BSD
license.

We could work in the same model, giving the chance for all in register
in Pootle under this condition - he agree that all translation's
contributions are licensed under Apache's License - giving the
translator profile. If this volunteer agrees with the sign of iCLA,
can be promoted to committer and follows the normal climb if this is
his wish. The same can be used in the wiki pages.

This step can save us of legal problems and rationalize the process,
giving for us more agility inside our process. What you think? And our
Apache's mentors?

With this care, we can receive (more) easily this new
volunteers/contributions in a legal way, and recognize/track all
contributions.

I think this questions is important to maintain this project as an
all, and looking others problems (arriving), like spellchekers,
thesaurus, and others language tools that (how it was developed in
GPL/LGPL mode for attempt OOo, and after LibO) will be necessary to be
remade under Apache. Is the case of all pt-BR tools, what will hinder
the adoption of AOO here. :-/

Well, can we use a more flexible way to accept this contributions, yet
inside of Apache's rules?

In any case, due to the setup that we have, a committer will
have to take care of reviewing and making the contributions
effective. All committers sign iCLAs: signing an iCLA should
be seen as a step towards getting deeper involvement in
the project but not a block from contributing.

I understand exactly in this way, but what I have not seen was a place
in Pootle or wiki where shows this points. At Pootle, i agree that is
necessary a commiter to revise all contributions, from anonymous or
registered volunteers.

For anonymous, ok, but i think that i lost the discussion about
*registered* volunteers in Pootle. Can Apache open a new profile there

This was solved this for the short term already: we got permission
to bundle dictionaries even if they are GPLd but we won't keep them
in the base tree. This is actually consistent since the dictionaries are
developed outside of the Apache Project.

Humm... sorry, but maybe i can't understand this point in a practical
question. You say that when we will release our binaries will can have
this dictionaries under [L]GPL embedded?!?

What i understand is that the *final user* need to download and to
install this dictionaries as extension and not embedded in the
package.

On the longer term we will probably try to use the dictionaries
provided by the platform (Windows 8- MacOS X at least)

humm.. (again) :-)

I think that we can do a simple web system and collect contributions
to rebuild this tools under bsd/mit/apache license, so can be used in

Hi

2012/3/14 Rob Weir robw...@apache.org

Then have a table listing the languages and the mailing lists. We
could also have links to the website, e.g., de.openoffice.org. If
there are official social media accounts used by that community (a
Facebook page ot Twitter account, for example) we could link to those
  as well.

We did it here, in Brazil. Before the trademark problem with
OpenOffice.org, we registered the oo.org.br domain and hosted in our
servers here inside a Drupal. Was an interesting experience looking that we
had news, tutorials/manuals, magazine and a lot of other projects, being
the reference point about OOo/BrOo/ODF in our country.

In other hand, agregating all in the same site, is a interesting approach,
consolidating the project as an international/multilingual project. In this
way, i think that a CMS can be the better option. IMHO, a CMS like Drupal,
connected in a robust DB like PgSQL, can give for us a infra for
communities. Looking this idea, can give us the flexibility for each NLC
make its theme and manage the content in his native(s) language(s).

Wiki is fine also. Personally, I prefer the Apache CMS and mdtext
over Confluence wiki. It is easier to make a good looking page that
has a consistent style with the rest of the site. But as Emerson
 wrote:

I used many wikis and i need to agree that is necessary to see for end user
and volunteer with low profile (non-tecnical), where MediaWiki is a good
tool for this profile. We need the careful for a low curve learning, we can
target two (IMO) important goals:

* Promotion of product - to ensure growth of marketshare of product through
personal marketing (mouth-to-mouth);

* A door more easy for new volunteers - to bring more users for AOO
project. When i started OOoBr/BrOo, only few people understood that the
focus is the international project, and with the time, was more easy enter
in BrOo and after arrives more adapted into OOo.

Well, only a experience that some people here saw in our old community.

Exact. I uploaded the PO template generated from your en-US.sdf to Pootle

this question, of return AOO/OOo to Debian. The reply was to get a stable
version and continuity in the devel more the said point by Imacat about the
compatibility in FHS and the legal questions that, in my opinion, is in a

And about the debian and linux to be our minor public, i not agree. The
market share of OS of linux is ~20% into desktop, and when we give a focus
in support the AOO in Debian, practically we are helping all derivates,

A draft blog post using the timeline to make a point about our
 migration efforts:

 https://blogs.apache.org/preview/OOo/?previewEntry=an_apache_openoffice_timeline

Robert, i saw that a request of brazilian users list isn't present in
your work. We did it in 2012/07/07, trought the request of Luiz
Oliveira.

How we are talking about L10N and Pootle questions, i think that the
list is an important tool.

Is possible add this point in your graphic?

Re: Pootle translation roundtrip

2012-03-11 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

Jürgen, i found a lot of inconsistences using translation-toolkit to
generate the PO files from your SDF.

Some examples:

$ cat en-US.sdf | wc -l
72477

$ opening it in Calc, i find the same results, 72477 strings.

$ oo2po -P en-US.sdf pt-BR --multifile=toplevel --progress=verbose
return 72059 strings.

Did you try with localize tool? Returned the same values?

I am revising each part of output of oo2po, for undestand what happens.

Bests,
Claudio

2012/3/11 Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@googlemail.com:
 Hi,

I would like to inform you that I am currently investigating a complete
round trip for translations and try to understand how it works in detail.

 resources - sdf - po - translation - po - sdf - resources  - build
 office

I think it is important that we first understand and know how the process
works and that we have a well define state on the pootle server where we can
 start with.

Hi

2012/3/10 Paolo Pozzan pa...@z2z.it:
I think it can work. Better yet: back in OOo days various teams were able to
choose between pootle or direct SDF submission (as Claudio said). Maybe in
this phase of reorganization it would be helpful for the teams to choose
 their preferred method.

Is a good idea, Paolo! +1

And more that it, i think that a next step for our next release, IMHO,
is to see how we use PO or XLIFF directly, removing the SDF layer.

And, about the reorganization, i believe that understanding of tools
and workflow is a good thing, so i am also studing Pootle and other
tools, like Jürgen.

Claudio

[PROPOSAL] Request for a Brazilian portuguese-language mailing list (was: Re: Brazilian users list)

2012-03-11 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

Following the model of other requests, we has:

anun...@br-pt.openoffice.org
comm...@br-pt.openoffice.org
d...@br-pt.openoffice.org
d...@br-pt.openoffice.org
iss...@br-pt.openoffice.org
mir...@br-pt.openoffice.org
usuar...@br-pt.openoffice.org

After the announcement of BrOffice going to LibO, the the pt-br lists emptied.

One list is very good for all, and following the model, could be called as:
ooo-geral-p...@incubator.apache.org

And i can moderate this list at this moment.

Bests,
Claudio

Thank you so much for your answer.
I am following the posts for a while, but I could not read it all yet (there
are many messages a day, a lot of work to do). At the exact time and at the
appropriate time will be available, since the initial discussion about
development, I can not help much, for sheer lack of competence in the
 subject.

Sorry, Pescetti. I am learning yet. Only now that i was able to

Re: [Translate] Users for Pootle Server

2012-03-09 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

I wish to talk about two points.

1) Really Pootle can be useful and we can win produtivity with it, BUT
is possible work with other tools too;

2) This instance of Pootle, without a minimum of one person per
language as committer, is unusable.

Explaining:

1) How we haven't a functional pootle instance, or by lack of admin or
by method/process, i am revising the translation in the old way,
with the convertion of SDF to PO, using the old pt-BR SDF file as
translation memory (TM) and continuing the revision/translation. Is
possible to share this files between the team and, at final, join all
files and reconvert to SDF.

I used translate-toolkit, to convert, and lokalize (the localization
tool of KDE) for revision, automatic translation (reusing TM) and new
translations . Today, the situation is total of 72696 strings (UI +
help), 59263 translated (81,5%), 10385 fuzzy (14,3%) and 3048
untranslated (4,2%). With a good team, one week of work.

2) I agree with many people that explained the question of a manager
per language, because in this situation is impossible for one person
with skills in all languages. Same that one person could know many
languages, the details about the region, coloquial language or
habits/common expressions isn't in his domain.

In any way, we have more one problem: how recognize the contributions
and efforts of this volunteers? This volunteer profile isn't technical
(maybe a language manager/leader), and he need to be the bridge
between the tecnical and localization parts of project.

And if need more someone to help in Pootle, i can help.

Best,
Claudio

Hi Bjoern

2012/1/13 Bjoern Michaelsen bjoern.michael...@canonical.com:
Thats not true. I do work on that too as is Lionel Elie Mamane and sometimes
Matthias Klose (for ARM). Rene is clearly the final judge on contributions and
changes to LibreOffice packaging on Debian as he is doing an excellent job
 there.

Absolutely! I agree with you that René doing an excellent work and he
knows all inside the OOo/LibO packaging process!

What i (try) say is that we have a small number of people envolved in
this process. As you said, are 3 people for a *big* project. Think
this 3 people looking *two* bigs projects. IMO, I can't see how.

IMHO, we need more people that know the debian package process to
maintain AOOo inside Debian.

if I maintain a package and its project forked in two, i should choice
one branch too. I think that is impossible maintain two enormous
packages like AOOo and LibO.

And, when Debian drop a package, generally all derivated distros drop
too. See the case of Java. Debian dropped java and Ubuntu some days
ago. Now, Oracle's Java for ubuntu users only through a ppa
repository.

And please, my focus is on the lack of people, and not who does the work.

Hi Jürgen

2012/1/12 Jürgen Schmidt jogischm...@googlemail.com:
I am wondering a little bit because I thought the Brazilian community had
 switched to LibreOffice completely.

*Completely* is a lot strong, Jürgen, but in general had a
misalignment about what some of us (and now, talking only in my name)
believed to be a more free way and was exactly to other side, with
many strange situations and more yet about the acceptation of some
events, so, a lot of members of TDF simply abandoned that project.

But I am more than happy that you
request pt-BR and I will include it. I know what a great job you and others
have done in Brazil and I would be happy to continue our relations in the
 future.

As i told in other emails, i wait to help as possible.

But hey we will support all languages where we have localizations for.

I really believe in that! ;-)

Anybody is invited to help with setting up the pootle framework and working
on a procedure how we can handle the translations in the future. Here we
have still some work to do ;-)

Maybe i can help in some thing in this part. I need read more the wiki
and understand better the process.

AOOo in Debian/Ubuntu (Was: Re: /usr/bin/openoffice.org)

2012-01-12 Thread Claudio Filho
Hi

2012/1/8 Michael Stahl m...@openoffice.org:
in this case i guess it's at the discretion of the distributions which of
the 2 successors of the deceased OpenOffice.org they transition to (and
given the lack of a release from Apache OpenOffice it shouldn't surprise
anybody that currently LibreOffice is the more popular transition target).

Your vision point is correct, Michael, and more. How in Debian, that
is the base of many distros, removed the OOo based in two points:
1) doubt about the future of OOo;
2) a minimal team to maintain the package;

was more easy to migrate to LibO. Today, only René, a Debian
Developer, maintains the package there. Some time ago, i started the
study about the packaging process, but today i stopped it.

I think that if we show a stable package and adjust the build process
to Debian, i believe that we can return to it, as more one
package/project, giving for all derivated distros the AOOo again.
