Re: Some stats and observations on OpenOffice upgrades
2012.09.25. 21:06 keltezéssel, Rob Weir írta: I've been looking at the upgrade numbers, the downloads that are triggered from upgrade notifications in the OpenOffice client. Although we are not tracking how many times such notifications pop up in the OpenOffice client we do know from Google Analytics how many users click the link to get more information on the update, and how many of these users actually download the upgrade. The trends have been pretty steady, a slight peak when a release is initially made, but a lingering steady state of upgrade requests even several weeks later. For example, let's look at the status for a single day, last Wednesday, Sept. 19th. On that date we had 164,752 total downloads of AOO. Of those downloads, it looks like 54% of them come from upgrading users. The remainder are either from new users, or existing users that went to the website directly rather than from an upgrade notification. (No easy way of distinguishing these two). The interesting thing is the breakdown by OpenOffice client version. For the upgrade installs on Sept 19th we see: 31% of upgrades were from AOO 3.4.0 52% of upgrades were from OOo 3.3.0 15% of upgrades were from OOo 3.2.1 3% of upgrades were from OOo 3.2.0 Note the OOo 3.3.0 numbers. Nearly 4 months after AOO 3.4 was released we are still getting large numbers of OOo 3.3.0 users receiving and responding to upgrade notifications, nearly 20,000/day. I'm not sure how to explain this. Upgrade notifications should surface once a week. Maybe: A) Some users are sporadically connected to the internet and the upgrade check rarely is successful B) Some users ignore/defer the upgrade notifications until a later time, in some cases months later Some features not supported in AOO 3.4.x especially, the report builder not developed any more, and Base users meet problems with reports containing charts. For this reason they after upgrade to AOO 3.4.x downgrade back az least one computer in companies to OOo 3.3 for report creating, and not care about update warning. And waiting for solution, and we can not provide them real solution, It is from forum posts (LibO no solutions for them, because their report builder has different bugs, which prevent from daily work.) Zoltan C) Some user run OpenOffice rarely, sometimes at an interval of several months D) Someone, some web site, some organization, etc., is still distributing OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 to users, and after they install they get the AOO upgrade notification. If D), this is somewhat a concern, since users running OOo 3.3.0 are exposed to several security flaws. -Rob
[Bugzilla ADMINS] Remove the MySQL Connector/OOo from bugzilla
Hi, As part of the moving of MySQL native sdbc driver from AOO to AOO-extras: http://code.google.com/a/apache-extras.org/p/aoo-my-sdbc/ I reviewed all bugs relating to native driver, closed as wontfix here, all unconfirmed or confirmed bugs with related to native driver. During the review process I removed the MySQL Connector/OOo label and set as none, if the bug was connected to other part of AOO Base, and not connected the MySQL native driver. Created new issues on AOO-extras which I found as not solved: See issues from 2 to 6: http://code.google.com/a/apache-extras.org/p/aoo-my-sdbc/issues/list Now I finished this work, MySQL Connector/OOo needs to make unselectable when you submiting a new bug. Please do it. Thanks, Zoltan

I agree that makes probably most sense I'm not sure what to do with those bugs in AOO bugzilla, because, in the case that I'll fix some bugs (and I'm not sure about it, I do this in my spare time, so I invest time in coding as far as it's fun), in that case I don't plan to commit code in AOO source tree under trunk/main/mysqlc: after IP clearance with revision 1201714 the code only works with MySQL system libraries, so that it can be considered dead code, and archived. we can keep the issues in bugzilla for reference at the moment but probably it make sense to mark them won't be fixed with an appropriate comment that the code is not maintained here at Apache and point to the new location. And of course close them. I will do the bugs move to Google code work, when Ariel created the new place for it, and I will close bugs in bugzilla. Zoltan Juergen

Or will it just be whatever random stuff we happen to have on a given date when we release 4.0? The answer, of course, depends on what we, as project members/volunteers decide to do. It is a good time now, as a background activity, to poll the community and wider ecosystem on ideas for Apache OpenOffice 4.0. Some JUnit testcases have been written in the package testcase. Smoke testing is re-implemented based on the lib. We also developed some performance testing script, but not include in svn. 2. https://svn-master.apache.org/repos/test/danielsh/symphony-import/symphony/trunk/main/testcommon It contains the low-level implementation to do GUI testing. 3. https://svn-master.apache.org/repos/test/danielsh/symphony-import/symphony/trunk/main/testgui It contains the common utilities used by uno api testing and GUI testing. I also wrote one wiki page to introduce it. http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/vclauto I'm not a coder, but I run the old VCLtool in past, used for translation testing, by creating screenshots from each dialog. This will be possible with new tool? I try to setup this test configuration on my win7. I can set up and build test enviroment, and could build it, but can not run the example test. Needs some more help on JUnit configuration. Which test class I can use? Regards, Zoltan I propose to do the following tasks next. 1. Migrate the library to our AOO trunk. I has successfully used it to test AOO 3.4 with some patch. symphony/trunk/main/testcommon-ooo/trunk/main/testcommon symphony/trunk/main/testgui-ooo/trunk/main/testgui symphony/trunk/main/test-ooo/trunk/main/test or ooo/trunk/main/testoo (Avoid to conflict with the test module that already exists in AOO) 2. Setup several testing machines to do build verification testing on daily build. Post the result on somewhere(e.g. wiki, or maillist) . The testing platforms includes: Windows XP Windows 7 32b/64b Mac os x Redhat Suse Ubuntu ...? (pls suggest) 3. Continue to clean up the UNO API testing. I tried to run it and found there are too many failures and some errors. I think API testing is very valuable. It is essential to revive it. Welcome to comment.

A left over I think from the old CMS system, not just embedded in the html. I checked another 8 pages with this and they all just go to 404 error page, shouldn't we (and I'll go do it today if so) just remove these? Joe asked that you trigger your build again. I went ahead and added the files for French. I also made a change to a comment in ooo-site/trunk/lib/view.pm. This is a trick that will cause the staging build to do a full build causing all of the IT and FR sites to be changed to the new SSI. (1) Create trunk/templates/fr/ssi.mdtext from templates/ssi.mdtext ... Change /brand.mdtext to /fr/brand.html Change /topnav.mdtext to /fr/topnav.mdtext I did this, just replacing fr - it. (2) Copy /trunk/content/brand.mdtext from content/brand.mdtext Here I actually copied content/brand.mdtext to content/it/brand.mdtext (which is probably what you meant) and edited accordingly. (3) Copy /trunk/content/topnav.mdtext from content/topnav.mdtext Same as (2). Commit all three changes at once and the whole of the FR part of the site takes these changes at once. O(1) operation. I committed, the build was triggered and succeeded but I don't see the changes. The trick with lib/view.pm may be required. If you would like I'll create the mdtext files and then you can translate. This would probably be helpful to all native-lang projects, since even those not familiar with SVN could simply submit the translated version of their mdtext files. Yes, but I want to wait until we do a couple and make sure all the proper details are covered. We may be adding a news.mdtext and index.mdtext for the main index page, but that will be a separate thread of work. And it is not a reason to wait. I'll look into doing it for many NLs this week. Here is a list of the next NLs to setup: es, de, nl, fi, pt-br, ru, ja This scheme only goes a single directory level deep. Is a single translation viable for both zh_cn and zh_tw? If not then the two sites will need to be separated. I want to be careful how that is done. Regards, Dave Regards, Andrea.

It looks like that not all survived the Pootle server update. I have reopened the issue in order to indicate that a review is needed. Thanks. I just check some new missing Finnish translation lines in Pootle (chart2 / source / controller / dialogs.po) and it seems to me normal situation: those missing translations are for new lines of version 3.4 and there is not yet Finnish translations for them. And overall amount for new lines is quite normal for new version I think. So there are no need anything else than translation work. I am going to send my CLA to Apache. I think I can translate some lines as nobody or offline? Thanks for the feedback. I hope you did not look into the Pootle server projects Apache OpenOffice (Incubating) or Apache OpenOffice (INcubating) Help Files. These projects shall not be used. At least the translation of the help for Finnish which is found in issue 119066 is not available in project Apache OpenOffice 3.4.x Help Files. Thx again, Oliver. Now there is line for 3.4 help file too on page https://translate.apache.org/fi/ I can confirm that all Finnish text are missing. This is not normal. Regards Risto The Hungarian Help files in same state: empty. Earlier state was 98% done, in incubating help files. The UI stings I finished for Apache OpenOfficce 3.4.x, excluding basic/source/app.po which is a VCLTestool po file. Regards, Zoltan
[Pootle][Translation] Why needs to translate VCLTesttool strings?
Hi, My second question to translation: The po file /basic/source/app.po contains strings to VCLTesttools. Why it needs to be translated? IIRC we decided not to use VCLTesttool in QA work, because we not want to use it, and no one want to learn BASIC. Regards, Zoltan

Hi, I just fished missing tranlslation of UI strings, in pootle. Please use this for next developers release of HU langpack. I keep working on help files. Regards, Zoltan

If we want release it we should build with the pre-built mozilla libs and should test it. Products For the developer snapshots we built an English and a multilingual version + various language packs. For our first final release I would like to provide at least full install set for the languages that we have already supported for the dev snapshots and potentially more language packs for other languages on demand and we have check the translations Languages = en-US de fr es it ja zh-CN pt-BR nl More languages packs when we have verified the translations and when we have volunteers who are interested to test these languages. Means we need volunteers from the local communities who are able to test these languages. When we see enough support we can also provide full install sets. We have to figure that out over time. I am not sure right now. If I know correctly the OOo 3.4Beta all UI strings was translated in Hungarian version, when I tested it not found any problems. Needs to be checked in HU version of AOO 3.4 or in langpack, that the changes not caused any UI problems. I try to organise the HU langpack testing, but most HU OOo project went to the LibO. I can test on win and linux platform. Please build HU langpack, too. Zoltan

Hi, I'm interested in this tool, but I'm not a programmer, I can describe me as power user, and I did some QA on database part of OOo. This tool can be used by non programmers? I used the VCL tool in past, with the predefined tests, never created new tests. The new tool difficulty level will be same as the VCL test tool and, I can use it without deep java programming knowledge. I can use Eclipse or Netbeans on basic level. Hi, As a new versions started to build from source, needs to add Bugzilla Version field the AOO 3.4 + version number or whatever you think about fit to the this place. The versions which you now can select all OOo older and developer versions. The latest is OOo 3.4Beta which I use, but it is not good label for AOO versions, because it is two different thing. In past when new version was built, the new DEV version added to bugzilla versions, to ease find a bug in builds source, if you find only in specific version or from specific version. Regards, Zoltan

Is this a problem with the host or a problem of lack of maintenance by OOo side? IIRC both http://extensions.services.openoffice.org and http://templates.services.openoffice.org are hosted by the Oregon State University Open Source Labs, and have been working bad all year long. I've discussed this with OSUOSL sysadmin. The servers are overloaded. So much so that the Nagios alerts were constant. They turned them off. Every so often varnish acts up and the machines lock. When this happens I have been the only one who emails supp...@osuosl.org - they are almost always responsive during business hours in their time zone - US Pacific. Both servers are customized Drupal stacks at different versions. There were people from Oracle working on upgrades. No one has volunteered to administrate these from the project. Since these servers host extensions and templates with all types of licenses they are not candidates for migration into the ASF. What should we do? We could move to an entirely different model. Don't host extensions at all. With SourceForge, github, Google Code, etc., there is really no good reason why we need to have a single entity host all of the extensions. It would be enough for us to have a browseable catalog/registry of the extensions: name, description, category, sreenshot, license and a URL to download. It would not be hard to scrape the existing extension side to form this kind of category. This steps if it done, left out the existing users who accustomed to find extensions in these sites. You needs to contact all template and extensions creators to host their stuff in other sites. What will happen with Oracle created, provided templates, extensions (report builder, wiki publisher, ), all under SGA? Zoltan The license issue goes away, since there is no problem with having the extension info hosted by Apache in a catalog of extensions. Load is not longer an issue, since the catalog can be very cheap -- static HTML if we want, generated from XML. Hi all, Start again, the my earlier try was alienated. As a first builds starts, and OOo Bugzilla migrated to Apache, needs to think about how we will use it. I'm merely talking about what would make the forums into a well-integrated part of the project, in terms of decision making, accountability, branding, etc. I'm not talking about technical integration, since that appears to be the easier topic., and one that Apache Infra and Terry are already working on. If the Forums are to be well-integrated into the project, I think we need: == PPMC Oversite and Approval of Forum Policies == Remember, the Forum volunteers -- 75 of them -- are not all committers or PPMC members. Very few of them are. Very few of of them are following this ooo-dev list. Obviously we should give great deference to the real-world experience of current Forum volunteers, but we also need to ensure that the Forum works well with project and Apache policies as well. 1) The Terms of Use and other policy documents used by the Forum should be reviewed and approved by the PPMC, and for the former, also by Apache legal. +1 2) We need to develop a privacy policy for the Forums, also to be reviewed by the PPMC and Apache legal -1 It can be a part of TOU, no needs separate document. 3) Changes to Forum policies, TOU and privacy policy would require a proposal on ooo-dev, and discussion and consensus reached there. It is possible that preliminary public discussions could occur in other places first, such as on the Forums themselves. But the project's official discussions and decisions are made on ooo-dev.In other words, if it didn't happen on the project's main list (ooo-dev), it didn't happen. -1 What you mean under Forum policies in plain English? 4) We need the Forum website to conform to Apache branding requirements, including the podling-specific requirements +1 ==Approval of Forum roles== My understanding is that forums have essentially three roles: a) Users b) Moderators, who delete, edit and move all posts, ban users, etc. c) Admins who can also create new forums and assign moderator rights Volunteers not listed, who contribute in posts with their special knowledge. 5) Users require no special treatment. They are like subscribers to a users list. 6) Being listed as an admin or moderator on a public-facing Apache website suggests endorsement by the project, and aside from any enhanced Forum capabilities enhances your ability to keep order on the Forums. In other words, it is the star that makes the sheriff, not the gun. But this endorsement, to be meaningful, should be made authentic. So Admins and Moderators should be approved by the PPMC. This kind of routine approval is given all the time for those who want to be list moderators. I see no reason why we cannot, initially at least, simply receive a list of current volunteers to ooo-private and approve them all. -1 Simple users became volunteers when he/she gives many useful comments to users not worth anything on this list. You and all commiters on this list will approve Hungarian moderators without knowing how they works? You will learn Hungarian and all twelve forum languages? Some moderators, and most volunteers even not reading English. How the PPMC will endorse them? 7) Future grants of admin/moderator rights would require a proposal to ooo-dev seeking lazy consensus. Such a proposal could originate from a forum volunteer or could originate from anyone on ooo-dev. This is no different than someone asking to be a moderator for a mailing list. -1 Same as above, language barrier. 8) Any project committer, on request, will be made a forum admin or moderator. +1 But needs to work as a moderator and admin on forum, if they require such role. While that's certainly desirable, if PMC members need this kind of access to provide oversight, then they need to be able to get access regardless. The exclusive zone of ownership is too ambiguous to me in this case, may be my English is not good enough to understand it. The closed forums (not seen by ordinary users) used for discussing all forums common things about of management, updates etc., other for storing spam posts for limited time, but if committer has admin/moderator access could see the content. ==Transparency== 9) We need all private forum discussions to be echoed to a log or mailing list where PPMC and Apache Members can view them. If you join as mod. or admin you can see it. If the forums are running on ASF infrastructure delegated to the PMC, the PMC and ASF membership need a mechanism to provide oversight. This is commonly done via mailing lists, and so repeating that pattern would simplify this task for many. One way of doing this is to echo posts to ooo-private. Another way is to periodically commit logs to the PPMC's private directory. There may be other ways as well. -1 The private list will be spammed unnecessarily, by forums posts. I don't see anything recent from you on the forums. Can you send a link to your note and the responses? It is much better to get first hand information, I think, then to have it filtered through someone else. In essence my concerns and fears seem to be shared by most of the NL admins, moderators and volunteers that staff the forums and do over 90% of the work to respond to end users. Until this last week my views were probably at the more positive end of the spectrum. If this happens then we aren't going to be left with any functioning forums, so I am starting to consider quite seriously why I am continuing to do this work at all. I would encourage the NL admins to be as vocal as you are, and to raise their issues directly on ooo-dev. It will be very hard for them to acclimate to Apache, and for us to understand their concerns, if they do not participate directly on the project's primary discussion list. I'm grateful, of course, for any attempts to collect and consolidate feedback and bring it to this list, but that is an inadequate substitute for an authentic two-way conversion. The following pieces of advice you've offered us are all good topics for discussion. What can we do to get the admins to come over and discuss these items? Note that discussing these points a private forum would go against the need for overall transparency. So the admins need to meet us half-way here. -Rob Please consider taking active steps: * To realise that these people spend all of their pro-bono time working in the forum model and generally hate using email for anything other than 1-1 communication. We need to have a mutually efficient way of working together. * To understand that the forums are a well oiled machine that are administered tightly and efficiently and have been for years. Please understand how the system works and what its strengths and weakness are, before demanding changes. * Please don't demand, but provide rational explanations for the need to change and use sensible change management to change working policies and practices. * Reach out and consider how to work with people for whom English is a second language, who find it hard work to read a simple and well formatted document or post and who just cannot follow complex email threads that are a dozen levels deep and get completely mangled by some respondents: o Keep thread simple and maintain thread discipline o Try to give direct answers to direct questions o All participants configure their email clients to use text/plain; format=flowed encoding, as text/plain only can completely mangle nesting of reply content. Of course the PPMC doesn't have to do any of this, but also please accept my parting advice that if you don't then you are effectively and knowingly killing the forums off. At some point these people will have decide whether to stay and tough it out; to leave one-by-one; or to take this service elsewhere. Any such contributions must be made under Apache 2.0 license. 2) Only project committers have direct write access to the documentation. With documentation, using a wiki , we would need a different mechanism for achieving this. Luckily there are MediaWiki extensions to enable this. Rob, I think you lives outside of this world. You will not find a lot of contributors which needs to work with this idea. This will stop causal documentation contributors to enhance wiki page. When I started working with wiki documentation, first I checked that the written down text is working in OOo, and if I find something corrected the text. I did this when I found some time to work on wiki. If the causal user meet barriers like every post wait for moderating for committers they will lost their interest very soon. May be you will have good managed and fully license compliant documentation, but fully out of date. Zoltan I'd like to preserve the immediate nature of editing on the wiki. That is its strength. But we need to find away to also get this under project oversight as well. I think we can do both, without too much annoyance to contributors. --Jean

So although I've seen claims that there are 35,000 user accounts, even 15,000 real accounts, I'm not seeing a huge volume of changes. Fighting with spammers is a continuous work. No changes so much because OOo 3.4 was not out on time, and the no new features happens, it is an side effect of Oracle stopping work on OOo. OOo Conferences presentations
Hi All, I want to rise one question not raised in this list. OOo community held 10th OOo Conference in Budapest last year. The conference materials with 9th Italian conference materials stored in http://www.ooocon.org/ site. What is the status of this site, it is in transfer list if hosted by Oracle. The older OOo conference materials not reachable in the net, stored somewhere inside Oracle? It is worth looking around not to lost the useful content of it. May be some presentation outdated, but can be useful one found. Regards, Zoltan

Just for fun, I tried looking up OSUOSL's service ticket #18367, but their website was impenetrable to my relatively feeble search attempts. As a systems programmer (retired), I used to read a lot of tickets, and it was my job to solve them. I find this protracted trouble curious, to say the least. :-/ It seems to me it is an abandoned site, nobody care for it, it hurt all OOo effort if we not find a solution to restart, the users ask every day on forum which way they could find specific extensions, and we can not help them. It is sad thing. Zoltan

Is this something that can be done remotely, or do we need an Oracle admin to do this for us? We would do this. We have all the access that we need (open source, yay!) I've started on a script to create this (local) Hg repository. See tools/dev/single-hg.sh for my first bits. I'm trying it out now, but it is probably going to take a while to run :-P (I also have no idea about CWSs) Did you clone the repo at http://hg.services.openoffice.org/OOO340? This is the one we should use. As you can see from the script, it is designed around DEV300. I thought we wanted the latest development branch? actually no CWS was integrated on the development DEV300 after the release OOO340 was branched off, while on OOO340 release relevant CWSes were integrated. so OOO340 contains the latest and greatest stuff. Pulling the CWS should be faster: create a local clone of your existing repo for each cws and pull from the CWS repro at hg.services.ooo. This will pull only the change sets not in your local repo and create a second head revision in it. This revision could be moved over to svn or you could create a patch from it against whatever version that is on the hg repo. Ah! That's and awesome improvement. Thanks. I'll incorporate that into the scripting. I don't think we want patches. I continue to believe we want a single Hg repository with everything, and we convert that to Subversion, and then load it into svn.apache.org. if it is possible to convert HG heads to SVN branches, that would be the way to go. i still think it makes sense to go a step further and actually merge all finished CWSes into OOO340 using HG first, because that is by far the easiest way and doesn't have any technical pitfalls. This will not good in database part of OOo, the cws hsqldb19 finished and waits for dev300 integration toward OOo 3.5. it is contain hsqldb 2.x.x database engine which is incompatible (convert all data into new version whic is not reversable) to presently used 1.8.0.10 version. Then the new version file opens in older version of OOo, but not usable, warning came up to use newer version of OOo. If you merge it it will cause mess. The using merging cws hsqldb needs to discussed in project in later time. It is cause incompatibilities, but the hsqldb 2.x.x has more features which is good for database users. Zoltan

Are they being used for different kinds of things? Or are they just different ways of doing the same things? The user downloaded OOo from OOo site can be aware of OOo mailing lists if met some problems - users with some knowledge. If user get OOo without his knowledge, some admin installed on computer, this happens in small companies or public administration, This user - average Joe, has knowledge in other software, when met specific problems, in most cases use some search engine to find answer, then the forum could came first. The second type of user prefer forums, and the first type possibly mailing lists. My practice on user forums and Base user and developer mailing list have differences, in the forums core developers never posts, questions answered by volunteers or other users. (It takes time to crawl through all posts, the developers time worth more than spend reading questions, easily answerable ones.) In users mailing lists, half answers came from core developers, if they think, the problem is real. Easily answerable questions answered by volunteers. In developer mailing list users mostly ISVs or power users use, when met specific problems, in specific database drivers, or with programming OOo, and answered usually by developers. Zoltan
