What happens to gold wave after you've reached your three thousand keystroke limit?

2004-05-26 Thread Joe
Hi, I have been using the gold wave demo for some time now. I figured out how to trim
space at beginning and end of tracks and how to automatically split files. However,
even though I can still make a recording, I cant seem to split files any more. I
thought it may have been that I've reached the end of the demo so I reinstalled it
again. Does any one have an idea as to why this split file feature won't work any
more? Thanks, Joe.

mp3 to audio cd finally

2004-05-26 Thread stever2525
What I did was in the file menu, go to copy to audio cd. Then I explored my
options and was able to accomplish what I wanted, using Windows Media.
That doesn't resolve my original problem with Creator Classic, but works. If
anyone wants to give me any further instructions, feel free to do so. I want
to learn as much as I can. Thank you.

Hi Sarah, one piece of advice re the archos, you can indeed play
audible books, I have a similar device and have converted the files
 very successfully.

 1. Download Goldwave, the sound editor, if you don't already have it.

 2. Register it, as you're gunna want to keep it.

 3. Install it.

 4. Install the lame encoder if it's not already on your system, if
you've got anything like winamp, CDexe, and so on, then it will
already be there, and goldwave will find it.

 5. Open the programme you will have an empty editing screen.

 6. hit alt-f then go down to open. press enter and you'll have the
 open file dialogue.

 7. use the browser to find the directory where your audible files are
kept. Note: if you've still got the defaults set, it will be
 C:\program files\audible\download\

 8. Click on one of the files in there, (not in the in progress
directory) and the file will open. Note that this will take some
minutes, as the programme converts the file first to .wav format.

 9. go back into the file menu, select save as, and change the name to
something which gets rid of all the extra crap that audible insert
into there file names. You don't need to put the .mp3 extension in.

 10. tab through the dialogue until you get to file types. Select mp3
 from the list that appears.

 11. continue through the dialogue until you get to attributes. it may
be the next tab, but I can't check immediately as I don't have access
 to it on this computer.

 12. Select an appropriate sample rate and bit rate for your book.
I'd suggest that 22500 and 48KBS would be ample, though the equivalent
quality of MP3's isn't as good as .ogg files of the same bit-rate. If
it were .ogg, I'd suggest 35KBPS as being fine, however I don't think
the archos players will play ogg vorbis files. Basically have a play
and decide how low you're prepared to go. You might need to check that
your archos will play lower rate MP3 files, I've never used the
 device.

 13. click save, having first checked where the file will be saved to,
and changing that if necessary. I tend to save mp3's in my normal
audio books folder, and leave the audible books right where they are,
out of the way of anything else.

 14. Presumably you can simply use windows explorer or my computer to
transfer the files to the archos.

Question from a total, how the hell do you manage to navigate your way
round one of those hard disk MP3 players? I have the odyssey from
edigital, and whilst it has speech recognission for the file names,
unless the filenames are formatted correctly it doesn't work. Also
you can't browse, and there's no access to the menus. as I said, but
it's stayed in the cupboard since it nearly had an impromptu and hard
meeting with a wall. I just can't work out what I've selected, change
the menu options, or browse what's on the disk. I here these amazing
blind people ! grin, saying that they remember what's on their HD
player, but I'm sorry, my parents didn't pay for that upgrade at
birth, and it can't be fitted now I expect.

Other listers will doubtless point out that you can add effects, edit
the sound file and so on, but I'm giving you a simple method to start.

It's not essential to register immediately, as you can do 150 commands
with the unregistered version per session, with an overall count of
3000 commands before you have to register.

HTH, and if you need any further help, I'm happy to do so.

 Hi guys:
I finally have time to get back on this list. A while ago I asked for

be the best. I don't want to crash my computer either. I use jaws and

It somewhat depends upon what kind of music you like. emusic.com is
good, easy and reasonably priced, but they tend to the out of the main
stream artists. The Real music store through Real.com is good and
relatively easy though unless you burn to cd with their player, you're
stuck with real format tracks. Also, the Walmart.com music site is
reasonably good, but you can find yourself with an edited track if they
don't like the content/language.

 Hi, Rick.
Please excuse the delay in the response.
First, the recorder V2 is thinner and smaller than the player. It has ten
buttons instead of six, it has the lithium-ion battery pack, and I believe
the only size you can get one in is 20 GB. The FM recorder and recorder V2
have the same form factor. The only difference between the two units is
the
FM radio in the FM recorder. Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have
USB 2.0. Players usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes have
1.1
and sometimes 2.0. It's difficult to tell to which specification of USB
The
older recorders conform. You can get both recorder V2s and FM recorders, I
 think, new from Amazon.
If you want one of the older recorders, or one of the studio units,
you can find them on Ebay (search for Archos recorder or Archos studio).
Many consider these better units, since the battery pack in the recorder
V2s
and FM recorders is proprietary. However, they're only available on Ebay
 with a bit of looking.
Personally, I have a recorder V2 and am happy with it. I have heard
that the Recorder V2s, FM recorders, and most older recorders have
comparable sound quality. The players, particularly the older players, are
said to have worse sound. For a good overview of the differences and
similarities between the jukebox models in table format, see

 Hi, Don.
Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They have just
put in accessible menus, and are working on speaking directory names and
other things on the screen. Rockbox is firmware for the Archos units, and
is
free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer
stores.
Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos
recorder,
and the Archos FM recorder work with Rockbox. The Archos AV units, which
play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are available from
many places, online from Ebay and Amazon, offline from many computer
stores.
The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether you want
a
used or new unit, a player or a recorder, and what size of hard drive you
 need.
Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit. First, the
quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out of the box, it
works well, and usually continues to work well. However, make sure you
have
some sort of return policy if you get a unit that doesn't work well.
Secondly, it might be an idea to get a player or recorder, rather than an
FM

That is, the battery pack is built into the machine and cannot be

As for the Archos, the manual is crap, so you have to ignore that. What I do

shows up as another driver and its easy to transfer files. The folders are

for the songs in the folder, after a while, you can count and get to your

you can't browse, and there's no access to the menus. as I said, but
it's stayed in the cupboard since it nearly had an impromptu and hard
meeting with a wall.

Re: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Michael Lang
Hello Aman,

do these Archos players and recorders have a function, with which one
can skip from one directory to the next or previous? Or does one have to
use the navigation tree system?

You wrote:

The only difference between the two units is the
FM radio in the FM recorder. Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have
USB 2.0. Players usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes have 1.1
and sometimes 2.0. It's difficult to tell to which specification of USB The
older recorders conform. You can get both recorder V2s and FM recorders, I
 think, new from Amazon.
If you want one of the older recorders, or one of the studio units,
you can find them on Ebay (search for Archos recorder or Archos studio).
Many consider these better units, since the battery pack in the recorder V2s
and FM recorders is proprietary. However, they're only available on Ebay
 with a bit of looking.
Personally, I have a recorder V2 and am happy with it. I have heard
that the Recorder V2s, FM recorders, and most older recorders have
comparable sound quality. The players, particularly the older players, are
said to have worse sound. For a good overview of the differences and
similarities between the jukebox models in table format, see

 Aman,

I pulled my Archos jb6000 out of the closet, and decided to try rockbox, so
I found your message in my archives. I followed the instructions you gave
in another message, and now have talking menus, folders, and file names. I
was absolutely blown away by what these guys have done. My interest in the
Archos units is now rekindled and I think I would like to buy one of the
newer units with a larger hard drive.

In your message above you mentioned a recorder v2 and that it had a
different form factor. Can you describe this unit, and what the form factor
is like? Does it have a lithium battery, or were they still using nimh back
then? I know they are older units, so I am not sure what I will be able to
find, but I'll try Ebay. Which of those units is reported to be the better
sounding one? Any info you can provide to set me off on a hunt for a nice
 unit will be appreciated.

These RockBox guys are awesome. I am definitely going to contribute
 something via their PayPal link.

 Best regards,

Subject: RE: Archos and Rock Box

 Hi, Don.
Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They have just
put in accessible menus, and are working on speaking directory names and
other things on the screen. Rockbox is firmware for the Archos units, and is
free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer stores.
Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos recorder,
and the Archos FM recorder work with Rockbox. The Archos AV units, which
play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are available from
many places, online from Ebay and Amazon, offline from many computer stores.
The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether you want a
used or new unit, a player or a recorder, and what size of hard drive you
 need.
Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit. First, the
quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out of the box, it
works well, and usually continues to work well. However, make sure you have
some sort of return policy if you get a unit that doesn't work well.
Secondly, it might be an idea to get a player or recorder, rather than an FM
recorder or a recorder V2. The latter units have no replaceable batteries.
That is, the battery pack is built into the machine and cannot be modified
by the user. This may make life difficult on longer trips. If mobility for
extended periods is important to you, you should buy a recorder or player.
If you value the FM radio present on the FM recorder, or the form of the
recorder V2, which is different from the one for the standard recorder, you
might like to get those units.
Now, once you have your archos, you can get the Rockbox firmware
 from
 http://rockbox.haxx.se
There are versions for all the Archos units I mentioned.

Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

---snip snip---

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few requests
to send this info, so I'll send it to the list.
To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later build, and
is available at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would any
other version of RockBox. How? Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Again, how
do I do this? Now
download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put the english.voice file into that. Huh? That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is on the
Rockbox site, for future improvements.
Aman

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,
I am finding the different versions of Archos players and recorders a bit
confusing. On the Circuit City web site, they are selling a Archos Gmini
120 20GB MP3 Jukebox. Does this one work with the Rock Box talking
software? Is this different from the Archos recorder v2?

Thanks,

Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos, expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
download the english.voice file from
http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is on the
Rockbox site, for future improvements.

The only difference between the two units is the
FM radio in the FM recorder. Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have
USB 2.0. Players usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes
have 1.1
and sometimes 2.0. It's difficult to tell to which specification of USB The
older recorders conform. You can get both recorder V2s and FM recorders, I
 think, new from Amazon.
If you want one of the older recorders, or one of the studio units,
you can find them on Ebay (search for Archos recorder or Archos studio).
Many consider these better units, since the battery pack in the
recorder V2s
and FM recorders is proprietary. However, they're only available on Ebay
 with a bit of looking.
Personally, I have a recorder V2 and am happy with it. I have heard
that the Recorder V2s, FM recorders, and most older recorders have
comparable sound quality. The players, particularly the older players, are
said to have worse sound. For a good overview of the differences and
similarities between the jukebox models in table format, see

I found your message in my archives. I followed the instructions you gave
in another message, and now have talking menus, folders, and file names. I
was absolutely blown away by what these guys have done. My interest in the
Archos units is now rekindled and I think I would like to buy one of the
newer units with a larger hard drive.
In your message above you mentioned a recorder v2 and that it had a
different form factor. Can you describe this unit, and what the form
factor
is like? Does it have a lithium battery, or were they still using nimh
back
then? I know they are older units, so I am not sure what I will be able to
find, but I'll try Ebay. Which of those units is reported to be the better

These RockBox guys are awesome. I am definitely going to contribute
 something via their PayPal link.

 Hi, Don.
Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They have just
put in accessible menus, and are working on speaking directory names and
other things on the screen. Rockbox is firmware for the Archos units,
and is
free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer
stores.
Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos
recorder,
and the Archos FM recorder work with Rockbox. The Archos AV units, which
play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are available from
many places, online from Ebay and Amazon, offline from many computer
stores.
The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether you
want a
used or new unit, a player or a recorder, and what size of hard drive you
 need.
Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit. First, the
quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out of the box, it
works well, and usually continues to work well. However, make sure you have
some sort of return policy if you get a unit that doesn't work well.
Secondly, it might be an idea to get a player or recorder, rather than
an FM
recorder or a recorder V2.
 Now, once you

Robert,

RockBox does not work with the current crop of Archos units, including the
Gmini and all of the AV series. Unfortunately, the units that can run the
RockBox firmware are no longer made, or sold in any retail establishments
that I have seen so far. I even tried finding them on Amazon, and they show

be Ebay. Below is a url to a table that shows the various units RockBox

It will speak all of the menus and options, and you can also have it either
identify files and folders either by number, or by spelling out their names.
I don't have a recorder model personally, so I don't know how it
specifically interacts with those models, but I am told that all the options
speak as well, including all recording options except of course for the View
Meter.. You can set recording levels, and other things having to do with

RE: Archos and Rock Box

2004-05-26 Thread Rick Alfaro
Sarai,

Again, I don't have a recorder, but I believe the file for those units is
called ajbrec.ajz . This file should be placed in the root directory of
your unit. Off of the root diredctory you should have a .rockbox directory.
If you don't have punctuations turned on with your speech, there is a period
in front of rockbox. Under the .rockbox directory, there should be at least
a langs directory. In the langs directory you should have the files
english.lng and english.voice.

Actually, if you use Winrar or Winzip to extract the archive you downloaded
for your model to the root of your archos device, those folders along with a
few others should already be there and all you have to add is the
english.voice to the .rockbox/langs folder.

Hope that helps...

Best regards,

using the voice menus, but once you get them installed, most of it is self
evident.

Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

---snip snip---

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few requests to send
this info, so I'll send it to the list. To activate the talking menus, you
first need to download the daily build of RockBox. This is not the stable
version 2.2, but a later build, and is available at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player, Recorder, FM
Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would any other version of
RockBox. How? Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos, expand the zip
file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod file (player), or
ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Again, how do I do
this? Now download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos and put
the english.voice file into that. Huh? That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice Assuming your
archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your archos as usual, turn
it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus. Stay tuned to the
rockbox list, subscription information for which is on the Rockbox site, for
future improvements. Aman

I did every thing you said and it doesn't work. I used WinZip, and your
right, it has several folders. Under the lang, English is one of several
choices. I added the voice file, but still no luck. Not sure what I am doing

First, the recorder V2 is thinner and smaller than the player. It

recorder and recorder V2 have the same form factor. The only
difference between the two units is the FM radio in the FM recorder.
Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have USB 2.0. Players
usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes
 have 1.1

FM recorders, I think, new from Amazon.
If you want one of the older recorders, or one of the studio
units, you can find them on Ebay (search for Archos recorder or
Archos studio). Many consider these better units, since the battery
  pack in the
 recorder V2s
and FM recorders is proprietary. However, they're only available on
Ebay with a bit of looking.
Personally, I have a recorder V2 and am happy with it. I

recorders have comparable sound quality. The players, particularly
the older players, are said to have worse sound. For a good overview

  Hi, Don.
Rockbox is doing great things with the Archos units. They

 and is
free to the user. The archos units may be purchased at many computer
 stores.
Note that only the Archos player, known as the Jukebox, the Archos

which play video, don't work with Rockbox. The Archos units are

The cost ranges anywhere from $75 to $300, depending upon whether
  you

Two notes are worth making about buying an Archos unit.
First, the quality control is said to be bad. If the unit works out

Hi.
You can set the recording parameters, input, bit rate, etc on the

barring a format or resetting them from the menu. A text version of the

No, it merely converts the file. It has an option to convert all file
types, and presumably it recognises the elements of a sound file when

Hi Sarah, one piece of advice re the archos, you can indeed play
audible books, I have a similar device and have converted the files
 very successfully.

 1. Download Goldwave, the sound editor, if you don't already have
it.

 7. use the browser to find the directory where your audible files
are
kept. Note: if you've still got the defaults set, it will be
 C:\program files\audible\download\

 8. Click on one of the files in there, (not in the in progress
directory) and the file will open. Note that this will take some
minutes, as the programme converts the file first to .wav format.

 9. go back into the file menu, select save as, and change the name
to
something which gets rid of all the extra crap that audible insert
into there file names. You don't need to put the .mp3 extension in.

 10. tab through the dialogue until you get to file types. Select
mp3
 from the list that appears.

 11. continue through the dialogue until you get to attributes. it
may
be the next tab, but I can't check immediately as I don't have
access
 to it on this computer.

 12. Select an appropriate sample rate and bit rate for your book.
I'd suggest that 22500 and 48KBS would be ample, though the
equivalent
quality of MP3's isn't as good as .ogg files of the same bit-rate.
If
it were .ogg, I'd suggest 35KBPS as being fine, however I don't
think
the archos players will play ogg vorbis files. Basically have a
play
and decide how low you're prepared to go. You might need to check
that
your archos will play lower rate MP3 files, I've never used the
 device.

 13. click save, having first checked where the file will be saved
to,
and changing that if necessary. I tend to save mp3's in my normal
audio books folder, and leave the audible books right where they
are,
out of the way of anything else.

 14. Presumably you can simply use windows explorer or my computer
to
transfer the files to the archos.

Question from a total, how the hell do you manage to navigate your
way
round one of those hard disk MP3 players? I have the odyssey from
edigital, and whilst it has speech recognission for the file names,
unless the filenames are formatted correctly it doesn't work. Also
you can't browse, and there's no access to the menus. as I said,
but
it's stayed in the cupboard since it nearly had an impromptu and
hard
meeting with a wall. I just can't work out what I've selected,
change
the menu options, or browse what's on the disk. I here these
amazing
blind people ! grin, saying that they remember what's on their HD
player, but I'm sorry, my parents didn't pay for that upgrade at
birth, and it can't be fitted now I expect.

Other listers will doubtless point out that you can add effects,
edit
the sound file and so on, but I'm giving you a simple method to
start.

It's not essential to register immediately, as you can do 150
commands
with the unregistered version per session, with an overall count of
3000 commands before you have to register.

HTH, and if you need any further help, I'm happy to do so.

As for the Archos, the manual is crap, so you have to ignore that.
What I do
is create my folders and put my music in them on the computer then go
to my
computer and click on my archos player, then paste the folders. The
player
shows up as another driver and its easy to transfer files. The
folders are
in alphabetical order so its easy to cycle through them with out
sound. As
for the songs in the folder, after a while, you can count and get to
your
favorite song, and if that doesn't work, then just switch tracks, like
in a
CD player. I love my Archos. The only drawback is its not as small as
some
players, but the sound is great!
Thanks for all of the help.

 7. use the browser to find the directory where your audible files
are

 HTH, and if you need

Hi.

Sorry, but I don't know how to make the instructions any clearer than
they
already are. Didn't you say you already had installed RockBox on your
device? Basically, you are doing the same thing here, but using a
later
version, and installing an additional file called english.voice. I
suggest
you go to the web site given in the instructions and browse around
there. I
think you will find there are some good FAQS that may help you. Since
the
Voice stuff is still technically a beta version, there isn't a whole
lot on
using the voice menus, but once you get them installed, most of it is
self
evident.

Best regards,

Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite
some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

---snip snip---

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few requests
to send
this info, so I'll send it to the list. To activate the talking menus,
you
first need to download the daily build of RockBox. This is not the
stable
version 2.2, but a later build, and is available at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM
Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would any other
version of
RockBox. How? Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos, expand the
zip
file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod file
(player), or
ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Again, how do I
do
this? Now download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put
the english.voice file into that. Huh? That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice Assuming
your
archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your archos as
usual, turn
it on, and hit menu. You should have talking menus. Stay tuned to the
rockbox list, subscription information for which is on the Rockbox
site, for
future improvements. Aman

 Thanks!
Where do I go to get goldwave and how much is it?

2004-05-26 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
If text files are converted to MP3s by a program like Text Aloud or
Kurzweil/Openbook, then the Archos will play them as standard MP3 files. If
you're asking whether you can transfer standard ASCII text files to the
archos and have Rockbox convert them to MP3, you can't, unfortunately.

I think the point is that it's not specifically related to audio, and
it's an area which has strayed fromm initial discussion of audio. I
personally think it's a bit heavy, I got a similar reprimand some time
ago, which is why I left the list a year or so ago. However Jeff's

Re: Archos jukebox 20 gb recorder questions

2004-05-26 Thread Sarai and Rosie
Check this out, from the guy on the rockbox list.:
Sarai and Rosie wrote:
 Hey:
I had my Dad look at the voice settings. I think we selected yes and on on
all of the choices, but it still doesn't work.

Assuming you want english as the language (there are others available!),
you should have both an english.lng file and an english.voice file in
that folder, like so:

M:\.rockbox\langs\english.voice
M:\.rockbox\langs\english.lng

Your drive letter may vary, of course. Once that's done, you want to
have menus voiced:

f1-general settings-voice-voice menus-yes

You can set the voice options for directories (usually 'while hovering')
and filenames in that part of the configuration menu also. Note that
while the voicing of menus and filenames (sequence number and extension
are spoken, e.g., file 1, audio, not the actual name) is handled
automatically by rockbox, you must perform an additional step to have
your directory names spoken. This can be done easily with a script, but
let's get the other voicing issues cleared up first before we mess with
that.

Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite
some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

---snip snip---

Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few requests
to send this info, so I'll send it to the list.
To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later
build, and
is available at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would
any
other version of RockBox. Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod
file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking
menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is
on the
Rockbox site, for future improvements.
Aman

Hi.
The next release certainly won't support any of the newer units, but
there has been discussion about porting Rockbox to other units, either
inside or out of the Archos line. There is some work being done on it, but I
don't think it's nearly ready for release. The rockbox folks are, however,
anxious to get the firmware working on other units because of the lack of
Jukebox units for sale.

Hi.
You can set the recording parameters, input, bit rate, etc on the
archos, yourself with the Rockbox talking menus. The settings are
permanent
barring a format or resetting them from the menu. A text version of
the
rockbox manual is at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/manual/manual.txt
The manual is not fully up to date, and is being worked on for the
next release of Rockbox.

Hi.

If you are referring to the table showing the differences between the

Note that the devices and features are in a table, so make sure you use your

To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the daily

Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos

Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your

To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later
build, and
is available at
http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would
any
other version of RockBox. Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod
file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
download the english.voice file from

http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
.voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
english.voice file should be
j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking
menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is
on the
Rockbox site, for future improvements.
