Re: mic jack on sb live

2005-12-15 Thread Curtis Delzer
I think that probably, the person did not get to the record part of
volume control, since there is a microphone level control in play
as well which is the monitor level, not the recording level of the
microphone. It can be confusing, after all, most machines don't have
an output level and an input level separate for a particular input
device normally separated like that, so it's confusing. :)

With most standard sound cards like Sound Blaster Live you can't use
a
regular microphone directly. You will need a computer microphone. The
computer microphone requires some sort of phantom power that the sound
card
provides. To use a regular microphone you will need a microphone pre-amp
plugged into the Line Level input.

Re: need help with burning mp3 data cd

2005-12-15 Thread Curtis Delzer
One thing which is critical in order to get your player to play the
mp3s in order is to make sure and put numeric references before each track e.g.
01 02 03 04 05,
or, if there are more than 100 tracks, start with 001, 002, 003, 004, etc.
If you use just names, they will play in alpha order beginning with
uper case, (I think) and then go to lower case, or if you have
specific characters beginning the track name, including spaces, they
will play above the alpha ones, characters like the exclamation, etc.
Way late, am I, but this helped my Rio Volt play books on cd in the
correct order, when I burned them after recording with Sound Forge.

hi, my name is Jim ardin, and I am in the state of New Jersey US of A.
and I need to talk to any body I can about burning a mp3 data cd!
What I am doing is, putting books on to cd. I am putting 1 too 3 books per
  cd.
when I first started doing this, I would put 1 book on a cd with no
playlist. and some times the tracks would play in the right order! I found
out that with out a play list, the tracks were playing by the date and
  time
I put the track in the folder.
I then got some help from someone on the blind-L-list. He told/showed me
  how
to make a playlist for mp3 cd. but when I tried to put more then 1 book on
  a
cd, and that meant having more then 1 playlist on the cd, the cd burning
program would not burned the cd. the reason I was putting more then 1 book
on a cd is: they were Trilogies.
So someone told me I should put them together as 1 book with 1 playlist.
  So
  I did it!
The trouble I am having now is, the tracks play in the right order, but
  will
not go to the next track with out having to press the next track button on
  the walkman type cd player.
  can any body help me?
please email or call me with the help! or I can call you if you are in the
US or Canada. please call between 8am and 9pm eastern time. my phone
  number
  is: 908 725 5552
thanks for any and all help.

Re: alternative to real player

2005-12-15 Thread Bruce Toews
First of all, JAWS has nothing to do with it. This is not a screen reader
issue. Second, while I'm not saying the person who has been having these
volume issues with Real Player is wrong, I will say that I've never
experienced a problem remotely like that, and I've been using Real Player
for about four years now in Windows. Of all of my players, Real Player has
been the least buggy, has messed up my file associations the least, and
has been the most stable. Close behind, Windows Mediocre Player, and a
distant third, my favorite player, Winamp.

I haven't tried changing the output yet so I cannot comment on your post.

Allot of people are convinced (rightly or
wrongly), that Real Player is full of spy ware so
perhaps Real Alternative isn't.

At 14:21 14/12/2005 -0500, Dana S. Leslie said:

I tried RealAlternative, mainly because, Unlike RealPlayer, it is
*supposed*
to be possible to configure it to use a secondary output device. Well, the
control is, indeed, there, but I could never get it to work! Even when I
set
it to use my secondary sound card, it continued to use only my default
card.
So, what the point in having an alternative to RealPlayer, if the
alternative is just as limited as the original?

Hi guys,
I hardly use Real Player and I mostly use winamp or windows media if
I
have to. I made it a point to get rid of real player as soon as
possible.
I found a nice alternative in a program called real alternative. When
you
lode it the player comes up as media player classic but it will play
all
the real streams. Go here for the program:

go here for more information about the program:

That'd work. But, personally, I find it easier to use the file converter
utility that's part of Easy CD-DA Extractor. Just highlight the files you
want to convert; right click; choose the Convert Files option; select the
desired file type from the dialogue; and away you go.

 Hi guys,
I hardly use Real Player and I mostly use winamp or windows media if I
have to. I made it a point to get rid of real player as soon as possible.
I found a nice alternative in a program called real alternative. When you
lode it the player comes up as media player classic but it will play all
the real streams. Go here for the program:
 http://www.whitestick.co.uk/progs/realalternative145.exe
go here for more information about the program:

 hope that helps

If you're using Winamp, pause the track, and press shift-ins-T. If you're
using Realplayer, look in the track properties dialogue. I don't remember

An easy way to find out is to highlight the audio file with the mouse, press

Good luck.

Well, if you're doing a podcast or something and want to edit the files,
often times you would want wave files anyways, don't get the quality loss of
transcoding, and with a 20 gig hard drive, or even 40, you'd have plenty of

 Hi all!
I'm trying to record myself singing into my microphone with goldwave, but
when I go to play back the file, I get dead air. I went into the control
panel and tested my hardware, and everything seems to be working fine. I
was wearing headphones at the time, because I had originally intended to
sing with a karaoke file and mix them together. It's a good thing I
decided to do a test recording first. I really don't think the headphones
should make a difference though. I have no idea what could be wrong.
 Thanks!

Re: problems recording with goldwave

2005-12-15 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Did you check that goldwave was configured to take its input from the mic,
rather than the line-in or some other source?

In GW, go to Options, control Properties, and the Devices page. The second
of the two drop-downs listing your audio devices is the record device
selector.

Good luck.

 Thanks!

Hi Juan,

Just select it and press alt enter. The properties box
should give you that info. Another thing to try is while its playing
in winamp, hit alt top row number three. In there you should also see it.

Close behind, Windows Mediocre Player, and a
distant third, my favorite player, Winamp.

 perhaps Real Alternative isn't.

So, what the point in having an alternative to RealPlayer, if the

Alison everyone has been very close where you need to go after pressing f11
is to control tab to volume tab
here is where you choose your record source. You can set your volume level
as wel as what you wil use to record.
the record tab is to decide whether you want the recording voice activated
and whether you want the recording bounded to the time you've selected or
unbounded.
There is also a choice that will allow you to set a time in the future to
automatically record a sound sourceat a given time.

Re: problems recording with goldwave

2005-12-15 Thread Stephen Schmucker
Hi Alison,

If you want to record something with no specific time length you have to set
it to unbounded in the f11 record tab. If it is bounded, Goldwave defaults
to recording 1 second. I had the same problem when I started using the
program.

Good luck.

Alison everyone has been very close where you need to go after pressing
 f11
is to control tab to volume tab
here is where you choose your record source. You can set your volume
 level
as wel as what you wil use to record.
the record tab is to decide whether you want the recording voice activated
and whether you want the recording bounded to the time you've selected or
 unbounded.
There is also a choice that will allow you to set a time in the future to
automatically record a sound sourceat a given time.

Re: knowing a song's bitrate??

2005-12-15 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Juan.

I'm new to the list, but recognize some names from the JFW group...Anyway,
if this has already been answered, I apologize.

I find the Read-Only box in the Tag editor/info section of Winamp (alt+3)
displays the bitrate pretty easily. That's the best way I've found for
knowing the bitrate...It'll also let you know the file size, duration, and
all kinds of other information.

That'd work. But, personally, I find it easier to use the file converter
utility that's part of Easy CD-DA Extractor. Just highlight the files you
want to convert; right click; choose the Convert Files option; select the
desired file type from the dialogue; and away you go.
