Admin: Announcing new list owner

2005-10-05 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Please welcome Jonathan Mosen back as owner of the pc-audio list. I
have just handed the reins back to him.

It's been a very interesting experience, but managing a list of this
size is a lot of work, and I need a break. Jonathan graciously
(albeit foolishly, perhaps) agreed to assume the responsibility for
managing the list.

Thank you, Jonathan, and good luck!

Re: Admin: audio books

2005-09-30 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Gary, you wrote:

Audible.com sells audio books that you can play on your computer, and
therefore, I would say that audio books of this type would be an
appropriate
topic for this list.

Gary, I'm aware of audible. I'm a member. But, the point is that the
pc-audio list is not for buying or selling or discussing where to buy
or sell things, even if those things are audio. Now, if the questions
are about how to play audio books or what devices play audio books,
and so on, then it's perfectly on topic.

Please try to understand the distinction. There are many buy and sell
lists already. I don't want the pc-audio list to become just another
one. So, I ask that you don't try to sell things here or offer to buy
things here, ok?

Re: Audible and MP3

2005-08-03 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Only the supported devices listed on the audible website will play
audible files. This does include some cell phones, such as the HP
I-Pack, but I don't know if your phone is supported. You'd have to
check the list on the audible site.

It is illegal to circumvent the audible encription in any way. You
can download as many copies of a program to as many devices as you
have activated, but it's not legal to defeat the encryption in order
to copy programs to non-activated devices.

On the download screen, there is a link to listen online but I'm not
sure if this would work with portable devices such as cell phones, and
I suspect that the site might be busy enough to prevent this from
working well, although I've never actually tried it. I always
download the programs and copy them to my Book Port which is a
supported device.

There are 2 mailing lists devoted to discussions among audible users.
I recommend these lists. To subscribe, send blank emails to:

Hi
I'm new to Audible books and am looking for some advice. I gather that
the
books can be read in Media Player and Real Player. Does this apply to
Real
Pla;yer on a phone (Nokia 9500) or has there to be some other software
or
codec available before Audible's format is recognised.

Alternatives for listening on a mobile phone or other device using
MP3 - are
there any? Can the files be converted - is this legal if you're just
using
your own books which you've downloaded?

Thanks in anticipation for any help. Feel free to reply off list if

Subject: Downloading NLS Books

Hi All,

Well, I found the books I wanted from the NLS WebBraille catalog and
downloaded several of them.

However, when I try to read them with my screenreader and braille
display I
get garbage. There will be a few recognizable words with lots of
various
symbols and number around them. You can't make any sense out of it
and
there's no way I could try to read a book this way.

I had this problem at first when I just tried to open them from the
NLS
website. So after reading the question and answer section I
discovered how
to set up a brf file and I elected to use wordpad. So now when I
download
they go to my documents file but when wordpad tries to open them they
are a
mess.

What have I done wrong. Are there other changes I need to make for
these
files to display in readable form?

Thanks so much.

Kris H.

Re: Cross-Fading

2005-02-11 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
If you actually want crossfading then you'll need some software to do
that. There is a free SQR crossfader plugin for winamp which isn't
too bad. There is also an output stacker which supposedly allows you
to stack output plugins, so you could stack the crossfader with the
disk writer plugin and make a wave file which you could then burn to a
CD. At least, in theory you should be able to do this.

If you have not normalized your mp3 files you might also want to get a
compressor/limiter plugin for winamp as well.

Well I can do that with an audio cd. However I thought that there
might be a
way of encouraging .mp3 tracks to cross-fade. I would have thought
that the
buffering of .mp3 files would have been transparent to the system ie.
that
this would have occurred in the background and not interfered with
output.
Perhaps not.

I don't claim to know anything about midifuls or anything; I was under
the
impression that Sibelius was a music notation software, created by
David

that you could say that it is PC Audio related. I was only trying to

Re: Configuring Router for Shoutcast Plug-in

2004-10-31 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Are you sure you need to do anything? Have you tried streaming? I
don't have that brand of router, but I didn't have to do anything
special in order to stream. I don't think it blocks any outbound
ports.

Subject: Configuring Router for Shoutcast Plug-in

I have a DLINK router, and I want to configure it so that I can use a
Shoutcast server.

1. How do I determine what my computer's IP address is, the one the
router
needs to pass ports through to?

2. How can I specifically open ports 8000 and 8001?

If your answer is just that you think my router is crap, then please
don't
bother yourself with answering. This is what I've got.

 Hi.
Yes, CDEX can rip CD tracks separately (this is the default
behaviour) and it can keep tracks together (which you have to select
from
 a
 menu).
As for CDs, none of the programs you mention will do DVD ripping, to
the best of my knowledge. What would you like to do with DVDs? Rip
the
audio, rip the video, copy the disk to a backup or something else
 altogether?

 Gary,

A few listers have already mentioned CDEX but, in my opinion, this
is
 the
only software you'll need to achieve all of your requirements:

 *  it's free
 * it's easy to use and fully accessible
 * it will retrieve artist, CD title, track titles, track number,
year
 genre
 * you can rip to MP3, WAV a number of other formats
 * you can rip a whole CD into a single track or select a number
of
 tracks
to be ripped into a single track
 * you can convert a folder or number of WAV files to MP3 and vice
versa
 * you can record directly from your line in using CDEX

Why pay for software that will do less than this?

Re: the Book Port

2004-07-11 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Thanks, Milton, for the information in your message quoted below. If
only there was a similar product which used Eloquence text to speech
rather than Doubletalk I'd snap it up in a heartbeat.

I read the article comparing the BookPort and BookCourier, but I felt
it did an inadequate job of comparison. It really just listed the
features of each product without much comparison.

Nowhere did I find much information about the mp3 capabilities of
these products. What bit rates do they support? More importantly,
what bit rates do they *not* support? Can bookmarks be placed within
mp3 files? I think my primary use for the unit would be to listen to
audio and perhaps audible.com books, so I'd be most interested in the
detailed differences between the two units in this regard.

Are there other products which I should consider for listening to
audio/audible.com books?

Also, nowhere was anything mentioned about AC adaptors. Can either of
these units be run off of AC? If not, it seems one would go through a
lot of batteries.

I did notice that in addition to the BookCourier being $20 less
expensive, it also includes twice the memory.

Allow me to answer two postings in one--

I believe that the firmware in the BookPort over the Book Courier will
support Daisy format 3.0 where the Book Courier currently was only
supporting Daisy format 2.2. Whether that makes any difference at this
time is not that important as there are not many books available in
Daisy 3.0.

The BookPort is a product of the American Printing House for the
Blind, Inc. information about the BookPort can be found at their
website at:

http://www.aph.org/

You can find a website on the Book courier at:

http://www.bookcourier.com/

And for all interested parties, go to the web of the American
Foundation for the Blind's Accessworld for July 2004 and read a
comparison report of the two devices we are talking about here.

Re: the Book Port

2004-07-11 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Yes, Debbie, I appreciate your comments. I do have a couple more
questions about the BookPort.

You mentioned resuming in mp3 files. Are you saying that the
BookPort will remember where you stop listening to an mp3 file and
start at that spot when you resume listening?

Also, the BC mentioned having an update feature for updating the
software. Nothing was specifically said about this for the BP,
although I realize it can be done. Is it more difficult to update
software/firmware on the BP than on the BC?

Actually, I'm not a subscriber of audible.com yet, but I have been
contemplating it for quite some time. One of my reasons for doing so
would be to have books I could listen to with one of these types of
players. However, I have read about the various formats and would
probably want to use format 4 anyway. I am somewhat particular about
quality and usually prefer to get the highest quality I can, so this
would not be an issue for me.

If you have any other comments about either of these devices or other
similar products I'd be interested. I really, really wish there was a
unit like this with Eloquence.

Fw: An Accessible version of the Oddcast plugin

2004-05-25 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Hi All,

As some of you may know, Oddcast, is a Winamp 2/3/5 DSP plug-in which
allows
one to stream mp3 vorbis and Windows Media audio. In a couple of
respects
it is comparable to the shoutcast DSP with which many of you will be
familiar. However, the addition of support for WMA and Vorbis
streaming set
it apart from Shoutcast. Further more, unlike the SAM encoders from
Spatial
Audio Oddcast is completely free to use as much as you want on as many
machines as you want.

The adoption of Oddcast has been rather slow amongst the streaming
blind
community owing to it's interface which is largely graphical and had
very
little keyboard support. However, the plug-in was still usable and
has
produced some marvellous results for those of us who have persevered.

The following was recently posted to a mailing list by the author of
Oddcast. I would urge anyone interested in streaming audio to take up
the
author's invitation and provide feedback regarding the following.
Moreover,
Remember, he's a programmer doing this in his spare time, with almost
no
clue about all the screen readers out there. So messages in the form
of (It
doesn't work for me, I'm using JFW 4.5) won't be very helpful. The
other
thing to keep in mind is that this guy has gone out of his way for us
and I
feel it is a good idea that when someone does something like this for
the
community that we at least attempt to show our appreciation by
providing
some useful and constructive feedback. Please forward where
appropriate.

---Oddsock writes:
I released a blind-friendly version of oddcast a long time ago, but

is most welcome..

I love the Real Music Store. The latest version of Real Player
includes
the music store under the view menu. Everything is accessible as
far as
searching for, purchase and downloading of tracks. It is set up
like an
Internet Explorere window because it is using the web browser
within the
  Real Player.

Joe, I haven't done this myself, but I found a function called
Save
split in the file menu. In the manual, they talk of split
file,
but
 I
haven't found a menu item with that name. Perhaps, it only is
shown,
when there are selections. I'd first try the save split
function of
 the
file menu.

Re: Speech-friendly music download sites

2004-05-16 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Ray,

My objection was not to the original inquiry about sites to purchase
and download music. My objection is to requests for specific music.
A list member asked what specific song was being sought and that is
off topic for the pc-audio list.

I am a little confused. isn't the purpose of pc audio to discuss
computer
related audio as it relates to computers.
Aren't music download sites a part of audio on the computer?
Thanks

Oops, I'm sorry, sir. Been trying to connect a satellite radio here.
It
is an audio device requiring a USB driver. I'll keep trying to find
another
way to do that off list.

I've just removed you from the pc-audio mailing list. There is
absolutely no excuse for posting an off topic message to the list.
Warning of it and apologizing does not make it ok and I state this in

Re: copying stream url's

2004-04-23 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Hi Maureen,

That's not really a URL, it's a file. The easiest way to play that
file is probably to navigate to that folder using MyComputer or
Windows Explorer and simply hit enter on the .ram file name.

Hi everybody, I would like to copy and paste a stream url into the
appropriate player on my second pc. The url looks like this:

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\JA1CYT8A\radiotwo[1].ram

I cannot just paste this in because of the first part. It won't copy
over.
How do I modify the file name to be able to do this? Thanks.

Re: copying stream url's

2004-04-23 Thread Jeff - The Ultra Guy
Tim, I know the difference between a .ram file and a .rm file. But,
that wasn't the question. Maureen was trying to paste a path and
filename into a player as a URL. My point was (and still is) that a
path on a local drive is not a URL.

A URL begins with a protocol such as http or ftp. A file path begins
with a drive letter. Some programs such as Internet Explorer can
detect the difference automatically and deal with either one
appropriately. Other programs such as winamp make a distinction
between the two. In winamp, press the letter l to specify a file,
press CTRL-L to specify a URL.

I think you should have quoted the whole message. In case you don't
have it
any more go to the Real Networks site and look up in their faqs the
difference between a .ram and .rm file. In any case, you aren't
playing a
.ram file, you're using a .ram file to point to a .rm file or list of
.rm
files.
