Hi Albert,

I tried all of that but without success. There is no compelling need for me
to upgrade to version 5.54. When version 5.55 or whatever is next comes
out, I'll try again. Perhaps whatever is causing the problem will be fixed
by then.

Hi Barry, I'm running this version without difficulty. Try uninstalling
everything including deleting the Winamp folder. Reinstall it and the
plug-in you like and see if that works. Sometimes those plug-ins cause
problems when installing new versions over top of them. Eventually you'll
want to update and you'll have to solve the problem then, so now is as good
a time as any to my way of thinking.

I kept getting errors with Winamp 5.54 and the way I solved it was to go
back to version 5.53. Prior to doing this, I had a couple of attempts at
re-installing version 5.54, but whenever I tried to configure the SqrSoft
Crossfade plugin, Winamp would crash. I don't know if there is a conflict
with JAWS or what, but I didn't have any success with Winamp 5.54.

You've probably allowed automatic updates or the remote feature to be
installed. In any event it's probably best you uninstall the program,
reboot, and reinstall it being careful to select only those features you
want. this means you don't want the full or automatic installation. There
are check boxes for each feature.

RE: Ripping with WMP 11

I use the option to begin ripping only when the rip tab is shown. This way
after opening the player there will be a start rip button right after the
list of file to be ripped. Just one more tab.

Albert, I have been through all Option tabs and things are set to my liking.
I did tell WMP to rip when a CD is inserted, just as a test, and the tracks
were ripped, but the gap between tracks was also there which I do not want.
I prefer to not have WMP rip automatically, but my problem is that I cannot
activate the button which would actually start a rip. Thanks for your help,
Norma

true, which torrent catcher is most accessible? thanks

I'd first try mp3 and txt for extensions. P.S. be sure to make a copy
first.

A friend of mine downloaded a sound clip from the Dr Who site's text only
version and that one's a strange beast as well, she couldn't open it and she
sent it to me, when I try to open it I get told that the file format's not
reognized and windows needs to access the net to find out what to open it
with, very very strange!!

I'd make a copy of the file and begin adding dot mp3 wma and other likely
extensions until you find the right one. That is if opening the file is
worth it to you.

RE: Ripping with WMP 11

2008-07-24 Thread albert griffith
Have you been to the options menu so you could select the folder where the
ripped files will go? If you have, what happens after you open the player?
You can set it up to rip automatically after you close the drive door or to
wait until you open the player and press the rip button. Of course, you can
set it to have you decide all the setting each time.

Hi listers,

I'm using Jaws 8.0.2173 and need help getting WMP 11 to rip a CD. Simply
put, I cannot tab to the "start rip" button, nor can I use and alt key
combination to start the ripping. Also, if there is a way in WMP 11 to not
have a silent gap between tracks but still maintain separate tracks that
would be most helpful to know.

Thanks in advance,
Norma

By pressing insert V while on a page if you're a jaws user you may find the
ability to avoid these files selectively on sites. You can save the
settings for each page but this is only practical for pages you visit often.

I would prefer another way to deal with it, if there is such a way and not
avoid all files, since there are cases when one would want to listen to
audio or video on a site.

RE: I need a little help with winamp

2008-07-18 Thread albert griffith
usually when people have that kind of problem with winamp they've allowed
winamp update to be installed. It messes up many functions for us. I don't
know how to change the program's configuration without uninstalling it.
Maybe someone else knows how though. You may have the mini-browser turned
on as well. Try alt T to disable it. If you have to reinstal also make
sure you have the standard skin enabled too.

It's like 2 or 3 things are playing at the same time. Does anyone know how I

maybe something is disabled that I need to enable.

I won't even bother to read the rest of it. I certainly don't consider a
windows pc to be a "trash box".

This is just my $0.02, but I think it's an interesting way to start out
a positive article, i.e. referring to your Windows PC and a Trashbox PC.
I know it discourages me, a Windows PC user, from reading the rest of
the article.

The first thing you need to do is go to their web site and register. Once
you do that you can then start the player up and you'll hear that tick tock
but it should only last for a few seconds and then a slight pause and the
speech should come on. It is an interesting player in the fact that you can
listen to lots of streams and podcasts as well as books. You also can
download their games and play them. They only have a couple of games. The
player is self voicing but I leave window-eyes running and it works fine
here. I don't claim advantages over winamp but they have done a good job as
far as grouping lots of streams in to sections.

I'm reposting this message because it was bounced by the Mailman software.

Tom

At best, I can get only -10 DB peaks from my stereo receiver going line-in
on the Audigy card. (The level on a PTR1 line-in recording is fine). I
believe I have the Creative volume control tied to the System volume
control; I have Mute unchecked and Level at 100-percent. I'm no novice at
this, so maybe I'm having a preview senior moment or something?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

This is one of the many drawbacks of downloaded audio.
The best way I found around that is, to buy the CD's.
You can get more info from just ripping them in Windows Media Player.
And on top of that, the sound quality isn't all that good sounding.
Just a few things you may want to think about.
My best regards.

list in dampening traffic which would benefit more list readers.
It goes back for the argument of why a list should be moderated rather than
being truly open.
Note I said "it argues" and I am not suggesting that this should be done.

As much as I oppose the idea of these announcements on the PC Audio list,I
have to take issue with what you say. If the list mandate allows for this
kind of announcement, and you choose to remain on the list, such
announcements are not spam.

Sorry, Bruce, It is just like beauty--in the eyes of the beholder. What we
do not need is more list traffic. I have worn out my delete key because of
thanks messages, I agree messages, etc., on various lists, including this
list at times. It is not a significant problem on this list, but the sum of
the parts is equal to the whole.

Right, bigger isn't better; but what is better is having to draw from a
wider array of individuals when opinions or suggestions are sought.
I am guessing, based on what I am reading here, is that twice a month is
probably too much; but a few times a year, such as Friday the 13ths or
quarterly, probably wouldn't overtax the list.
I get the sense that Tom is trying to think out of the box unlike some 2nd
or 3rd generation list owners, who reflexively say "that's the way it always
was and, hence, must be."
Well, my study of the Bible has not let me to find any mandated rules or
precepts for any given email list meaning that, as they were created by man,
man is free to change them as seen fit.
And, oh yes, an owner can do whatever they wish with their lists as "on
topic" is a relative term which an owner can make as broad or narrow as
desired.
Of course, if list recipients don't agree with the owner's approach, the
owner may have his list (with his beloved rules) but no posts.

Tom, in this instance, has not suggested the changing of guidelines on a
permanent basis. What he has suggested is trying, at least on a one day
basis, something different which may or may not work.

I can see folks reacting negatively if this was to be a permanent change of
direction. No where do I see this being advocated here.

That's exactly the kind of distinction I would like made. The kinds of
things you and Petro do are invaluable to folks today (or down the road) in
aiding us to gain more out of pc-audio whereas someone's weekly plug for
their oldies show of 1956 or that beloved tour of their apartment, well who
really cares.
Certainly, Dean Martineau's Weekly TopTechTidbits Newsletter has done a good
job of alerting folks to such things; but more venues for this info, on a
timely basis, is needed.
This is the type of thing where a list such as this can shine.

I see the rationale of discouraging such postings. Perhaps such
announcements ought to be sent to the moderator who, if he felt they
warranted a mention, would repost them.
Perhaps something else is workable.

wWe need to encourage those that take the time to do such work be it on
their own or at the behest of their employer.

Hi Larry, I don't think anyone is threatening anyone with anything. If a
list no longer meets one's needs, it's perfectly appropriate to leave that
list. As the discussion is about whether a change in the direction of the
list is a good idea, those who believe that such a change would mean that
the list no longer meets their needs are just as entitled to express a view
as are those who believe it's a good idea.

I already subscribe to a number of lists that exist exclusively for this
purpose. One such list is streamad.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In fact, Streamad was founded in response to too many promotional posts on
the PC-Audio list, which I founded back in 1998.

I am a member of this list to read about tips and tricks regarding audio on
the PC. That is at this point its purpose, and it is that which interests
me.

I believe there is much on the internet that would be good for us to know
about and this is but one of those areas. I just don't think this list
should be the showcase for it. I enjoy this list because it has relatively
low traffic and I can get answers to my audio related questions from
knowledgeable people. To stray from that would diminish the lists value to
me. Allowing this stuff on special days or for trial periods is just a
compromise not worth making. It might be good to point people in the
direction of those list where this material is advertised.

Let me make another suggestion after reflecting on Bruce's and Jonathan's
comments.
First, let me say I have about as much interest in reading about personal
broadcasts as taking a vacation into the eye of a category 5 hurricane.
i could care less as I don't have an interest in homebrew internet radio as
there is already plenty of mainstream streams out there.
Having said this, and as Friday the 13th is a rather rare occasion, let's
try this on Friday and see just what happens.
After Friday, Tom can sit back and evaluate the results -- how many posts,
how many negative ones posted publicly and privately, how many thank yous
both ways, and all the rest.
And see if it has a positive or negative impact on postings down the road.
Maybe twice a month is too much, but maybe a few times a year (such as on
Fridays the 13th might make sense.
While this kind of posting has no interest to me, there are people out there
that do value this kind of stuff.
Bruce and Jonathan are right that there are other lists for this kind of
thing; but, on the other hand, not everyone either knows about those lists
or would care to be bombarded by the incessant repeats week after week of
the same thing.
These shows, whatever we think of them, are a part of the world of pc audio
and show casing them for a day or so will hurt no one especially if we can
code the subject lines.

Initially, I thought this would be a good idea but after reading the posts I
have to agree with Bruce and others who think it isn't. Since there are
other lists providing this service I see no need to provide it here. Plus,
if we provide it we'll just be diluting the audience for the other lists and
that's not a good thing. This list serves a group of people who want to get
information about how to make audio related products work and to learn about
new ones. I think we'd be biting off more than we could reasonably chew to
broaden our scope to this extent.

I'll probably be the only one who doesn't like the idea, and that's okay,
it's not my list, but I just think there are so many such forums out there
already, and people cross-post to all of them. If it's a dedicated forum for
advertising podcasts and shows and so on, fine, great. But if five other
lists allow it, and I'm a member of all five lists for various reasons, I
have to read five copies of the ad.Plus, you're always goingto have
thepeople who will post ads on other than the designated days,a nd then
claim that they didn't know.Just my two cents'
worth, and I'm sure I'll be overruled on this one, which is fine.

something to pin the blame upon, !!

While it would be impossible to enforce strictly, might it be possible to

those not interested.
And, how about encouraging posting info about streams or podcasts that one
might not have a direct affiliation with but concsidered might be of

What if posts about web or podcasts could have an indicator in the header of
the messages. Like off topic has OT. This way those who wanted or didn't
want them could handle the posts in the way they saw fit. some list members
would delete them others would send them to a separate folder while others

I know several list members who have podcasts and webcasts and there are
probably many others who I do not know about.
I've been trying to think of a way to help podcasters and webcasters promote
their casts and came up with this idea.

Maybe a couple times a month, say the first and third Friday of each month,
we could have a free-for-all Friday when any list member could post a short
concise message telling about their cast. I'm thinking posts could be made
all day Friday UTC. I would send out a message to the list a few hours
prior to the start of the Friday time period and explain that it is a
free-for-all Friday and what UTC time would be in the United States and
maybe other parts of the world.

If I don't get too many complaints against doing this maybe we can try it
this Friday, the thirteenth of June.

It's not the stations that cause the problem it's accessing them with the

Hello fellow list members,
I am writing this post to you, because this is something that I thought
you'd like to know.
I have quite a fiew of AOL-XM satellite radio stations bookmarked in Winamp.
I know the cut off date is suppose to be today, but all of the radio
stations still play for me in Winamp.
So at this point, I am wondering if the CBS player will have any affect on
these AOL-XM streams at all?
My best regards.

Whether many blind folks currently use the AOL player isn't relevant to
issues of accessibility. When I worked to promote wheel chair accessible
sites I'd often hear from the owner of a building that he couldn't
understand the big deal since he had no crippled patrons anyway. Of course
he didn't, it wasn't accessible. Mike, that seems to be what you and others
are saying with regard to the AOL player. Build it and they will come.

I agree with you entirely.

What blind people have to keep in mind that even sighted folks can have
problems in using certain pieces of software. Just because someone can see
doesn't mean that every peice of software will necessarily work on
everyone's pc.
Some software is just out of the realm of certain folks for whatever reason.

Also, even if a piece of software passed every accessability test (whatever
that is supposed to mean) doesn't mean that every blind person will use it
without a hitch.
Some folks have marginal pc skills so, unless they got handholding at every
step, this still might lock them out.
As with sighted users, just some audio programs won't work for certain
folks.

Personally, I could care less about all this as I have never used the AOL
player.
And I truly wonder how many blind users an AOL player has anyway.

Chris, in the main I agree with your stance on this issue. However, I don't
think it's important that we know whether AOL could have made a decision
sooner. While I'd like to satisfy my curiosity with regard to this issue it
will be very difficult to prove. Furthermore I don't believe the law
mandates that every aspect of a site be accessible. I do think owners of
these large sites have to make a reasonable effort to make it so. Therefore
if Curtis Chung and the AOL person are working together in good faith toward
a solution we need to be satisfied with that partnership and those goals for
the moment. AOL has made great strides toward the development of fully
accessible web content and it appears they're interested in progressing
toward the same end goal as before. It will be interesting to see how
quickly we have access to the on line radio back.

Well, I fully believe that law suits should be a last resort, and we
shouldn't "panic". In this case though, I'd like to point out a few things.

"we will take some significant steps backward as we transition to the use of
a third party player. We apologize for the inconvenience"

I believe Curtis Chong when he says "Mr. Wlodkowski ... is a man of
integrity and a person who is deeply committed to ensuring access to AOL's
services by all people with disabilities.", but it sounds to me like our
inability to access AOL or CBS Radio is considered a mere inconvenience to
AOL. Since we have other streaming options, I suppose technically it is just
an inconvenience, but if everyone providing on line streams and media
players felt this way then it wouldn't be long before this vital source of
information and entertainment would be inaccessible to the blind. I agree
that as blind persons and Americans, we have bigger issues facing us, but
you can always say that about any given issue. Furthermore, more and more
people are getting their information on these weighty issues over the
internet, and the blind should be able to do the same.

"The necessity of this new business model was driven by the dramatic
increase in the music royalty rates paid for Internet Radio. This action by
the record labels left AOL no choice but to look for an alternative way to
stay in the internet radio business. Given the business demands and
accelerated transition, there wasn't ample time for us to effective address
the major usability issues with the CBS Player. The AOL Radio team is aware
of the accessibility barriers presented by this transition, and is committed
to addressing the issue with CBS Radio once the new player interface
launches on June 9."

When did AOL and others know about this dramatic increase in royalty rates
paid to internet radio? Is it really the case that they didn't have ample
time to deal with accessibility issues? Why are they waiting until June 9th
to address this issue with CBS radio?

Like I said, we shouldn't "panic", although I'm not sure I've seen anyone
panic yet, and we shouldn't jump to the conclusion that anyone needs to file
a law suit. On the other hand, although AOL and Mr.

Wlodkowski are coming clean with this issue, I don't think they should be
given a free pass either. For my part, I'm not convinced they couldn't have
addressed this issue before June 9. Furthermore, I don't think business
needs are a justification to break the law.

Well, that's just my $0.02, and I know people who are a lot smarter than me
and who are a lot familiar with all of these issues are looking into this.
I'm just tossing out my opinion, so feel free to hit the delete key and
ignore it!

I saw the msg; but, on the other hand, experiences of actual users will be
even more valuable.
The heads-up from the AOL exec certainly puts everyone on notice and watch;
but, many times, what someone technically views as inaccessible may well be
usable.
The problem with this whole accessability issue is that so many things that
even the "evangelists" (bothering Darrell's term) treat as so unusable,
turns out to be perfectly workable after some playing around and
brainstorming.
And often there are other ways of getting at the same stream other than that
one player.

So the way I look at this is that we have a warning presented here that
the moment that requires some vigilance and evaluation, not panic.

It is also possible that the screen reader vendors, either through scripts
or otherwise, may make this new player usable.

Mike, I'm not sure if you saw the message from an executive at AOL to Curtis
Chong the lead tech guy for the NFB. That the player will be inaccessible
was stated but the executive said they'd do everything they could to make it
work but he was concerned it wouldn't be ready by Monday. I don't think it's
time to become alarmed yet.

John and Darrell

While I sympathize with your cause (and at this point do you guys even know
what problems this player will present, if any), blind people in particular
and Americans in general have far bigger things on their plate these days
then worrying if someone can get at a media player.
John, your safely crossing a street deserves 250% greater attention than
this CBS/AOL player.
Perhaps this player will prove workable via scripts or whatever.
Perhaps other players can and will play the same streams.
Frankly, I am ffar more concerned about the spiraling cost of gas, how
expensive medical care and insurance is, that, in the case of northern
Florida, you guys are fighting the Central part of the state over water
wrights, and the myriads of other social issues that involve quality of
life.
Sure, it would be nice if this player worked out of the box; but having
watched so many of these blindness evangelist battles, I often have found
that the things that get complained about are usable either directly or
indirectly.
It is not that this isn't important; but there are far more things that
ought to be viewed as important and perhaps some values are totally out of
whack when quantums of energy get directed to an audio player rather than
other things.
There aren't unlimited dollars out there; and frankly I have a greater
concern that John can get home safely than whether he'll have to use another
player to listen to his favorite sports talk show.
why? Well, if he cannot get around safely, he won't be able to listen to
those shows anyway?
And if he cannot afford adequate health care directly or indirectly, he
won't be around to listen either.

America is going through tough times these days; look at home foreclosures,
rising unemployment rates, and all the rest. Politicians cannot embrace the
types of things we are talking here at the moment as frankly it is even sad
that we can give these things greater importance when there are true hurts
out there, not just inconveniences.

Yes, I'll be curious Monday to see what this means if anything. However, I
am guessing that all of us will be listening to most of the same things we
do today, but perhaps in a slightly different way.

And before writing off the new AOL player, I would suggest first looking at
the product to see if the warnings are warranted.
Perhaps they are, but they may not be also. And there are many ways to
listen to the same thing.

RE: Unfortunate News From America Online (AOL)

The solution lies in demanding all programs be accessible from their
beginnings. The law has helped but it needs more teeth.

I don't understand why such software is able to be sold legally when
Government has laws about accessibility.
It really means the laws are pointless.

I think they'll get a reasonable time frame within which to comply. The
CEO's tone was cautious but optimistic. Bottom line? Accessibility has to
be built in just like safety is in automobiles. They aren't allowed to tack
it on at the end of the line as an afterthought.

RE: More questions about Is this TV thing real?

2008-06-04 Thread albert griffith
You should read more carefully please. The man stated it did nothing to
mess up settings for jaws users and you asked if there were any conflicts.
Please explain? Since we're none of us in the business of reviewing tech
programs whether it's the best probably can't be answered. I suggest you
try some of the others and report back to us so we'll know if indeed this
one's the best. We each had to try it and take some risk and so will you.
I hope this helps.

Is it user friendly with jaws?
Is it the best, I'm willing to pay if there is a better one out there?
Thanks for your help,

None of my blind specific devices can handle WMA files. I'm curious to know
if anyone knows how much cost we're talking about for adding this support to
readers, note takers, ETC. As in how much would this add to each unit?

If this is true, then why do they advertise it on their website?

Hi everyone,

I had a sighted friend who showed me a program that allows you to view 3000
television and radio stations around the world. I think this is really cool.
Does anyone know of an accessible software that would work with JAWS in
viewing many of these channels? He says that the program he installed on a
laptop computer is only usable with a mouse and not a keyboard. Any
suggestions?
Thanks for your assistance in this area.

Hi albert

This question of accessibility is always so subjective. What works for one
person may not for another. But in regards to Amazon, there isn't really
all that much to work with. You simply download and install the Amazon mp3
downloader. The advantage to using it is so that you can download entire
albums very quickly and easily. When you download an entire album, you
*should* be presented with the usual file download dialogue you get in
either IE or firefox, whichever you're using. The file type is something
that might be unusual, it's a .AMZ, or A M Z extention. Instead of
downloading this file to your computer, choose open. After y ou do this,
the amazon mp3 downloader will atempt to download all the tracks in the
album you've purchased, and on all the systems I've used it on, it downloads
verry quickly. I was able to download an entire album of 11
or 12 tracks in about 10 minutes.Very, very nice! But again, the
amazon mp3 downloader is best for downloading full albums only. IfIf you're
only purchasing one track, you *should* be able to download the song
manually. the downloader just kind of sits in the background and does its
work while you do other things.
Hope this helps.

Unzip the file first. Press alt F while on the file and arrow down until
you hear extract and press enter. This assumes you're using XP. After it's
unzipped get rid of the zipped file just to make things easier. Now, you'll
have a traditional file which you can burn to a disk.

Hello List Members,
I am reposting this question because I never got a response to it.
I'd really like to be able to record streaming audio from the net, but I
don't know what software to use to do this.
The questions that I asked about Sound Tap, is below.
Thanks in advance.
My best regards.
  John.
---
Hello List Members,
I found a peace of software on the net that is called, Sound Tap.
Reading what it says on their website, it is suppose to let you record what
you hear.
It also says that it can and does record directly from your sound card.
My question is, has anyone on this list ever heard of this software?
And, has anyone ever tried it before?
How user friendly is it with Jaws?
Sorry for my many questions, I have never tried to or ever wanted to record
audio streams before until now.
I would just like to know if this peace of software will work for me.
If not, I am open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
  John.

Hi Albert,

I've seen that problem once Here's what I did. I was able to do this using
WinRar. Open the zip file with WinRar. find the song that exceeds the 260
character limit then rename it. Close WinRar and when it prompts you to
save changes tell it yes and that should do it.

Subject: Automatic downloading

Hi Folks. Does anyone know of a programme that allows one to download a
number of files at one time. To explain; I download music files from a web
site and often the selections I make have 100 MP3 files in the collection.
My problem is I have to go through the downloading procedure for each file,
1 by one. Fortunately my download speed is rather quick, around 60 seconds
per file but my problem is exacerbated by the fact that after each file is
downloaded I then find myself at the top of the web page and have to find
the next download link. I didn't have this problem when I used JAWS 7; once
the download dialogue box closed after download I found myself still on that
link and could easily move to the next one. Now I'm using JAWS 8, I'm
finding myself at the top of the page after download. If there was a
programme that could be used to download all these files automatically, it
would save me a lot of time and I could just get on with something else
while 100 plus files are being saved and downloaded. I know that the 7
digital site has such a facility but think it only works with downloads from
their site and I don't think it is very accessible. I don't use this site
for music downloads really, mainly the stuff I like is usually in protected
WMA and I can't be bothered with the hassle of defeating the DRM unless I
have to so use other sites. . However the principle has been established
that it is possible but I don't know if there is a programme that would work
on any site and would work with any file format. I would be grateful for
suggestions. Walter.

To get a list of the shortcut keys in Winamp:

1. When in Winamp, press alt.

2. Arrow down to Winamp and press right arrow.

3. Press enter on Nullsoft Winamp...

4. Right arrow to Keyboard Shortcuts.

5. Press down arrow twice and the list will open.

6. Press ctrl+home to go to the top of the list.

7. Arrow down through the list.

A note at the top of the page says the list is not complete, but most of the
commonly used keystrokes are there.

RE: Problem With Switch

It's been my experience that saves go to where you designate them to go.
I'd make sure your save settings held or do a computer search for the file
and learn just where it got saved to.

Hello List Members,
Just as the tidal says, I have a problem with Switch.
I used Switch to convert a WMA file to MP3 so that I could put it on my cell
phone.
The problem is, I can't find the MP3 file.
If it is suppose to save the file to the same folder as the source, then why
is it not happening this way?
Thanks in advance.

 Hi

I've changed the subject line to better reflect the question here.

It depends on how the file is tagged. You can
press alt plus f3 to get into the file editor, and if the album is listed it
should be there. In newer versions like 5.531 you can press the autotag
button and get that information from the CD Database online. That should do
it for you.

Yes, Replay a/v is the definite choice for recording in Vista. It captures
the audio or video stream before the soundcard ever sees it, so ordinary
computer use is not affected at all.

RE: Total Recorder Version 7.0 is Now Available

couldn't make their software work with Vista.

Subject: Total Recorder Version 7.0 is Now Available

Total Recorder version 7.0 is now available from www.highcriteria.com. Here
are the changes in this version:

A new kernel-mode driver is introduced, which provides the following:
- Full support for Windows Vista.
- Elimination of sound distortion when recording sound from applications
that use DirectSound, such as Skype 3.x.
Total Recorder can still be used with the old driver, referred to as Total
Recorder's user-mode driver. When you install Total Recorder, you can
choose which drivers to install, and then specify which driver will be used
by Total Recorder.
Ability to export and import Total Recorder's configuration settings and
scheduled jobs. This is useful if you need to reinstall your system, move
Total Recorder from one computer to another, or as a backup.
Tags for RIFF files are supported. This allows you to work with tags for WAV
files, for example, in the same manner as MP3 files.
You can rename files from a playlist using tag information.
Use of the latest version of FLAC sources, resulting in higher speeds and
better compression when encoding to FLAC format.
Support for clear-type fonts and Windows XP visual styles.
Current clip info is displayed in Total Recorder's main window.
Ability to automatically start playing a file when you open the file.
Improvements when working with playlists. For example, you can use
drag-and-drop to move files in playlists.
Total Recorder's help is now in .chm format.
Other minor enhancements.
Ability to background record (i.e. capture) Internet broadcasts in MP3, WMA,
and Ogg Vorbis formats. This feature allows you to do the following:
Record Internet broadcasts in their original format without decoding and
re-encoding.
Record without using an external player.
Extract track information from a stream.
You can also play back an Internet broadcast.
Use the unique time-shift feature which enables you to listen to recorded
sound while a recording is being made. While listening, you can move
anywhere within the recorded part of the sound stream and start playback.
This feature is available for both ordinary recordings and when background
recording Internet streams.
Cue-sheet files are now supported by Total Recorder. Cue points can be
created as
follows:
Manually, to make a bookmark in a sound file.
Automatically during a recording session based on pause reduction, changes
of clip info in an external player, etc.
Automatically when capturing an Internet transmission and the information
about a track changes.
A file can be split at any time using cue points.
Sequential numbers can be assigned to tracks while recording in split mode.
If a scheduled job is running and your computer is about to shut down,
hibernate, or be put into stand-by mode, you can cancel any type of
shut-down process.
The features of saving a file based on split conditions and the manual
splitting of files have been redesigned.
Many other enhancements.

Subject: Why does Winamp reset volume on stream drop?

Does anybody know the answer to this annoyance? While listening to a
stream, if the stream drops and then comes back, Winamp automatically shoots
the volume up to full, which, if you were listening to something quietly in
the background, can be a real shockeroo! A tap on the up- or down-arrow key
will, however, reset the volume level to whatever it was before the
disconnect, plus or minus one step (depending on whether you pressed up- or
down-arrow). The problem is that if you're using software speech and you
turn Winamp down to hear your machine do other things, when the stream pops
back in, you get a good blast!

Yes there are scripts and they're on Brian Hartgen's web site and other
places as well but I can't remember where.

Subject: Sound Taxi, a pain in the ***

Hi everyone. Thanks to those who posted with suggestionson unlocking DRM
files, I'm grateful. I do have some requests for help though so pleas
forgive this longish post. Firstly the purchasing of Sound Taxi was no easy
task. I had to get sighted assistance on the last page to confirm the order
and that required the use of the mouse. I am totally blind and use JAWS 7.
I would appreciate any help from those who use Sound taxi as it isn't very
accessible. I've managed to convert the 24 files I had downloaded but I had
very little, in fact no control over the finished product. The original
download files were 192 bit and when I converted these the bit rate varied
from 160 to 320. If anyone is familiar with using Sound Taxi with a screen
reader then I would appreciate your help in organising the programme for
ease of use. Also, are there any Scripts for Sound Taxi that would make
things easier and if so, where do I find them. Many thanks in advance to
those who are able & willing to help. If you wish to contact me off list to
avoid boring the other members then my email address is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Again, thanks to all. Walter.

I wouldn't think jaws 8 and XP Home is the problem since it's working with
versions as early as five.

Hi, I would like to say the same if I could ever get to the point of
actually useing it.
Did you have any interference or shut down of jaws when you loaded up?
I run jaws 8 with xp-home, could this be my problem?

A system restore might work. Also, try resetting your sound card's
settings.

Hi All, Ok, about Magic Jack, glad your doing ok with it. I tried it as it
so states in its set up and nothing went right.
So far, it has taken me two days to try and figure out what the heck went
wrong. I cannot find anything that it downloaded, this is necessary in order
to clean out my system and possibly try again. But here is the really bad
thing; all my sounds are gone now. I go into the sound settings and try
loading up one of my own or any other and no go. I tried just setting one,
like windows start and when I click the play button to as if test the sound,
a dialouge box shows and says that this media file cannot be played because
my sound card is now in use and as far as I know, this is bunk.
My jaws works ok, but no sounds in any program. I use to get a sound to
notify me that I got email, now nothing; and so on.

So, does anyone know how to get my sound card working again?
I really would like to get MJ working but not at the expense of jaws or any
other interference.
Any ideas out there?

RE: Protected files; are they unlockable?

2008-04-13 Thread albert griffith
I believe Sound Taxi will only unlock DRM's if you have the license.
Example: if you've downloaded a file produced by Audible but you want to
change the format, you can because you already have the license to use it.

Hi Walter,
you can buy a program called SoundTaxi, which will break the drm.

Have you considered reading the instructions on the site? If it can be done
by phone or check, they'll surely know.

Hi

I haven't had to refill my balance on the site for an age, it seems that
credit cards are out of the question again, i told a friend about the site
but he couldn't find the click and buy option, so my question is, what
options are there for us at the moment so we can refill our balance etc?

Thanks

A question about Jango?

2008-04-11 Thread albert griffith
After using this site once I can't get it to allow me to change my genera
preference. It begins playing music immediately without a new edit field in
to which I can type a new artist. How do I change it without deleting my
history or something equally as rash? thanks
