My Scanhancer arrived yesterday and I wasted no time trying it out.
The Scanhancer is a little piece of plastic which is inserted into the
light path of the scanner, between the lamp and the slide. It acts as
a diffuser which helps to reduce the effects of film grain. It's only

I have to say I'm in the don't-mind-cat-pictures camp, and I quite like this
one. I might prefer a slightly tighter crop, or perhaps a cleaner
background. I find the top and bottom left slightly distracting.
As a portrait, I think it works great. Love the detail in the eyes. Our evil

My archiving system is crude. Each day that I dump out my memory cards,
I create a directory called 'dump MMDD'. If I've burned that
directory to removable media, I add a 'burned' to the directory name. I
keep the directories on my hard drive because I've lost more files on
removable media

it was scanned with (to(?)) 1600 PPI on the Konica Minolta Dimage Scan
Dual IV (uff, the biggest fault of this scanner is his looong name) and
then downsampled in Photoshop.

shares some characteristics with both Alan's and Jan's ones - it looks
tilted backwards like Jan's and it shows center of a matte screen in a
lower part of a frame like Alan's one. As the unit looks mint and it

Bill, this is pretty durned good advice. I'd add to it by suggesting that
the batteries be removed from that K1000 and that a spot meter be
incorporated into the program. In fact, go out some days without a camera
and just use a spot meter, metering highlights and shadows of a scene.

It sounds like there's something defective in your camera. I haven't
seen any behavior like this
when my batteries get low enough my camera just shuts down with a

I think I have enough lenses (from 24mm to 200mm), what I *really* need to
do is learn more about composition. Most of those 15 years (well more
including my first two cameras) are just snapshots.
by and large, technical photo books don't do a particularly good job of teaching
