Dave, The railroads in the US went to deisels in the late 40's to the early 50's. It was an efficency move. Steam was in operating condition 50% of the time. Deisel was more like 95% of the time. Management went for Deisel in a big way, saving on maintenance. Other issues were not so apparent. If
