I am very tempted to get a 2nd K-3 and, but am not convinced that I want the grip - I already have one for my first K-3. And I am not interested in the DA50/1.8. Two weeks ago I shot a party with the K5. Had I only used the internal battery and swapped as needed I would have had to swap at least once. Maybe twice for a sense of security. But I got one of the cheap Chinese grips with 2 batteries for just over $50. It was nice to have the extra battery power. Yes, I used the vertical release as well. But DSLRs are frustrating just a bit since the finder is not in the middle of the body. The camera has to be held higher (arm position) than a film SLR for vertical shooting. Just an inch or so. But still awkward. At least to me. My only complaint with a grip is if I would need to change both batteries then the grip would have to come off. Not convenient. Too slow for an active environment. I agree, I shot 1929 images on a single Pentax fully charged battery in the grip on one K5 last night but that's using back button focus, no image post view, no flash and no video and minimal chimping. FS - DA 50-200mm (original version, non-WR, non-L)
I have an original DA 50-200 that needs a new home. It's been all over the place with me and has minor scuffs on the barrel and hood to show for it. The glass is clean and everything works, though. I don't have it with me at the moment, but I can provide photos later this evening. I just wanted to get this posted while it's still Friday. :) For you fine folks, I'll go as low as $70 plus shipping (USPS or FedEx, your choice). Lens includes hood, rear cap and Tamron front cap. The original Pentax cap was damn near impossible to take off when the hood was on, so I switched it for a better one. I don't think I have it anymore, but I'll take a look around if you really want it. OT My photographic year
Hi Team, It's been another tumultuous year for me personally, lots of things to contend with on the life front but all seems to be coming together slowly towards the end of the year. The good thing is that I have been earning money (often too many hours) but also finding time to get out and shoot my Pentax kit at least locally. I've been venturing into exciting new territories for me, some of which I may be able to share next year. I do have to review my kit over the next year, the K5's are working for me but not as well as I imagine a set of K3 bodies might in the similar circumstances. Unfortunately there have been no notable deals on K3's in Oz (excepting a silver kit) and I don't expect discounting as the local currency is continually weakening, that said it may be a better time to sell some of my excess gear though I'm not remotely excited by the notion of the sales process. Because of my current living situation I tend to pack a a fairly robust photo-kit, basically I'm prepared for anything but in doing so I'm lugging about an almost 10kg pack virtually everywhere I go. It is wearing on me and those about me, so in an effort to keep the peace and get sensible again I finally bit the bullet and bought a point and shoot that will suffice in the 50% of situations where I really don't need a honking great DSLR. So tonight I get to test out my most loathed on this list brand of camera in low light at the local carols by candle-light with my now seven year old son. I might even post a GESO :) Seasons greeting to all and I hope to be list-lurking less next year. The 50-135 is the lens I needed on Wednesday, as was noted the wide end of the 80-200 was still too long and my 16-50 wasn't long enough to get the narrow field of view to block lens flare from the hair light. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My story with pro camera repair, so far
Last summer my K-5 died. I sent it to CRIS, they quoted me something close to what a used K-5 in better shape than mine would cost. I just ordered a new K-5 II, then discovered pro camera repair in San Diego. I had CRIS send the camera there, they quoted $200 to repair, then $150 to remove the IR filter. The camera worked great for a few weeks, then it died. I sent it back to PCR and eventually heard back that the main board had died, they would do the labor for free, but I'd have to pay for the new board. Considering the age of the camera, I doubt the repair killed the board. Months go by, they think it'll be fixed, but then it doesn't work, they try somethng else, it still doesn't work. Finally, they think it'll be done this week. It turns out that they think it'll need a $20 flex board, on order. After discussing things, they are sending me a check for $350, the cost of my original repair, and I'm leaving the camera there. If they manage to fix it, they'll contact me and I'll have the opportunity to buy the camera back from them. Outcome: I'm not happy, but I could be a lot less happy. For prompt response, you need to call them on the phone, they tend to be days or a week behnd in checing their email. I think that what happened is they got caught by an old worn out camera with lots of things going wrong with it. A repair shops nightmare. Had I not sent it to them, I'd have dead K-5 that wasn't worth repairing. Instead, I got several weeks of experimenting with a UV sensitive DSLR and they've got a K-5 that probably isn't worht repairing, but which they'll probably have thier tech work on in his spare time. The yelp reviews on them are mixed, either very low, or very high. People seem to either love them or hate them. Re: My story with pro camera repair, so far
I can check later but I think it was about 85,000. When they replaced the main board the on board counter got reset. They are a lot less expensive than the competition. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Ensemble Espanol Dance Concert
Hi Everyone: Darrel I attended a wonderful Spanish dance holiday concert tonight. Photography was allowed—just no flash. We had upper center seats, and all the shots were taken from my seat. All lights and sounds on the camera were turned off, and I only clicked the shutter when the music was loud. Darrel said he never heard the shutter once. I started out shooting at 4000 ISO, some at 5000 ISO, then dropped down to 640 for some slow shutter speeds. I shot about 120 frames, but these 6 are the best of the bunch. All are deep crops. I shot with the FA 50 f1.4, but I mainly shot at f2.8. I picked the third frame for my picture of the week because she’s my favorite dancer. Would have been interesting to shoot with the K-3; would have loved the improved low-light auto focus capabilities. Ensemble Espanol is in residence at Northeastern Illinois University. My sister is an administrator for the dance company. http://www.caguila.com/espanolconcert2013/index.html Comments welcome. Re: Ensemble Espanol Dance Concert
Terrific set, Christine! I *really* like the last one. The monochromes all look like they could have been taken in the 1950s - really like the tones. The red is just so rich. I think I'd really enjoy shooting a performance like that.
