Wide Angle Lens Question
Sir, a pre-owned Pentax 16-50/2.8 or the Tamron 17-50/2.8 should serve you well. These lenses are tack sharp with excellent contrast and color. For that occasional tele shot greater than 50 mm get a front attachment high quality 1.7x Auxiliary Tele Lens. Believe me, I use one, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference even if you pixel peep. Re: OT the Guardian on the € crisis
Its always nice to be generous. I'm sure the Greeks appreciate it. It reminds me of the story of the French Aviator during WWI who came up with a brilliant plan to deal with the effects of the Castor Oil lubricants that aircraft engines used at the time. He has special flying pants made that had a slit in back, with matching underwear, and a had hole cut in the pilot's seat of his plane and a matching hole in the fabric on its fuselage. When he felt the urge becoming unbearable, he simply pulled the fabric aside and did what a man's gotta do. It was stated that he always tired to be over German trenches and not Allied trenches when the urge struck. The account I read said that the French and British troops appreciated the courtesy, it wasn't recorded what the Germans thought of it. This is my perennial garden, shot under a light cloud cover yesterday evening. The fountain is on the far right. Hidden behind the garden is the bench where I sit and watch the birdies at the finch feeder that is adjacent to the fountain. As I mentioned before, the garden is designed to be weed free in that it's overcrowded with perennials and gets a heavy mulch with leaves every autumn. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=13843752size=lg Paul -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

If so, have you tried disconnecting it and testing the card reader in that USB port? If that works, your least cost solution might be an external multi-port USB hub. You could plug the 'E' drive and the card reader into it and plug the hub into your existing, working USB port. I would look for one that includes an external power adapter. A problem I've frequently seen with USB is the computer doesn't have the power to supply all the USB devices that want to be attached to it, which is less of a problem with powered hubs. Totally OT - 2-cents solution
It has nothing to do with PDML, - but I thought some PDMLers, who frequently share their 2 cents, would appreciate that 2 cents can play a significant role. I recently purchased a valve to replace one in my toilet (so-called Fluidmaster 400LS Leak Sentry Pro Fill Valve). The main idea is that the water intake valve is activated only through the flush (not flash) handle, thus preventing it from refilling if there is a water leak. However, the valve is clearly underdesigned (under-tested), and doesn't work as designed when submerged into the water. While looking at Amazon reviews, I found this suggestion how to make it working: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2GK5ZJ8IXSDVD/ I found a more simple solution that costed me extra 2 cents: http://42graphy.org/snapshots/misc/_IR31443.jpg Occasionally, - 2 cents can be very helpful! :-) Cheers, Igor -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Totally OT - 2-cents solution
Seems that as opposed to mine, your two cents are actually good for something =) 2011/7/24 Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org: It has nothing to do with PDML, - but I thought some PDMLers, who frequently share their 2 cents, would appreciate that 2 cents can play a significant role. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: Bandit
Thanks, Dave and Ken. My previous Malamutes all went to obedience training. They generally were the first to learn each exercise, but the objected to repeating the exercises over and over. Too Boring. I do have a dog sled (and a wheeled rig for training when there is no snow). Of course, it takes more than one or two dogs to make a dog team, so I have to join up with other members of the local club so that we can run our dogs on the sled. We will probably get a female in the spring -- somehow they are happier and better behaved if they have a canine companion -- but they have to be almost adults before they can be put on the sled. GESO (8): Takaka
Takaka is a small town not too far from Motueka. The hill you climb to get there is notorious for being steep and very winding. My head was spinning for a couple of hours afterwards. I was glad that we stopped in a couple of places on the way back to take in the scenery. If you're into caving, the Takaka hill is one of the best places in the country to go. There aren't any actual photos of Takaka itself in here. I should have taken some. It's a very... relaxed community. To be blunt it's pretty much full of hippies and beatniks. Finally :) I've had a run through my photos from our trip to Sydney last November. Sorry Brian, I didn't get any photos of you... http://www.multi.net.nz/sydney-2010/ Wishing we had that springtime Aussie weather at the moment. We had about 3 inches of snow overnight and it's currently 0.6 degrees C at 11am. It's still snowing at the moment, we've had two branches break off a tree and we've been out to try and take off as much snow as we can. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Memory card and card reader problem
Good to hear you're back in business. The system regestery can end up pointing two different device drives at the same port, which might keep either driver from working properly. In the control panel open the system dialog, and switch to the hardware tab. There should be a button labeled hardware, to open the device manager. Check to see if you have any yellow question marks displayed. On 7/23/2011 4:33 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: Looks like it is the USB port... computer doesnt seem to know it is there. It should be drive F but when I plug either the card reader or my canon P S into it , the drive doesn't even come up... The only drives that come up are C, D , E - E is the big old external drive... when things are working with the Vivitar plugged in, Adobe downloader recognizes F,G,G,H...etc After I went away and came back and rebooted and plugged in the creader with a good CF card in it, I got that little chime sound that you get when things are working... however, when I launched the downloader the stuff at that port didn't show up on the list of choices. Same thing when I just tried to use it for downloading directly from my point and shoot... that didnt work either. conclusion - it isn't the card reader thats mucked up ... The pins look fine and it didnt take much effort to slip a card in.. The 2.0 does appear to be cooked, however - but that isn't a biggy at all - the files that really matter that were one it are on the computer. Also - the ACDsee device detector did detect the card reader... Further, I tried my old 80 GB external drive there and nothing happened. IDeas??? Anyone?? ann On 7/23/2011 11:51, P. J. Alling wrote: The only thing to do is to try the bad card in a different device, which you did already, by using the *ist-D. If it were recoverable by other than superhuman efforts the *ist-D would have either recognized the card, and read it normally or asked if you wanted to format it, or formatted it without asking, (yes, it does that sometimes). CF cards have their own controller much like any other memory device. If that's cooked the data may still be there but recovery would be very expensive. One way to see if your card reader might still be good would be to plug it into the USB port and use the Icon on your menu bar that accesses USB devices available on your computer, (and allows you to safely remove them). If you double click it you'll get a dialog that shows all USB drives and the drive letter assigned to them. If you see the Vivitar reader in the list then you have a pretty good idea that the reader is good. CF cards do fail, could be that it's time had just come. I have several CF cards... the one that failed has been reformatted a few times already.. it would be nice if I could get the stuff I shot off it. One more piece of info - the Adobe downloader asks me to select a device.. whereas, when things are working properly, it detects it... it recognizes there is a card reader in the port. I could have just bopped over to Staples and ask them to try it but the weather is keeping me from venturing out at least not more than a few steps. at the moment I've mislaid the 2gB card (I said mg before, I meant GB!) ann Do you have a friend with a card slot on a laptop in their computer? It sounds as though the reader has caused a formatting error on the card.. If the problem is the reader, then the card can be reformatted. If you are looking for a trial horse I have a 1 GB card just gathering dust that you are welcome to if that would help John G On 7/23/2011
