I'll take your word on it. Digital video is dizzyingly complex with various different containers, video formats, encodings, audio formats, encodings, etc. I don't have time to suss it all out at the moment; the fact I can output something usable that plays in (seemingly) the same resolution as I upload it is okay by me until I know better. I'd love to get more into motion work, but not until I retire from my current career (which may be quite soon … :-). The SL has some nice motion capture capabilities and I'd love to explore them further. Re: OT: Advice wanted for Antivirus/Firewall (Windows 10)
McAfee & Norton-Symantec seem to install something extra in their software that makes them particularly difficult to get rid of. The problem isn't with AVG, it's with McAfee (and Norton-Symantec). This site claims AVG does have offline installers, they're just hard to find. It has links. https://www.techmesto.com/avg-2015-offline-installer-standalone/ In addition to anti-virus software, I use a HOSTS file to block unwanted sites. http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ For firewall, I've been relying on the firewall built into my router. On 4/4/2016 7:40 PM, John Francis wrote: We have recebtly accquired a new PC for use at home. HP, in their infinite wisdom, installed a trial version of McAfee's competing product on the machine, and AVG fails when it tries to install itself in place of the McAfee product. AVG support seems to be unresponsive, and the advice from their forums is for me to remove McAfee before trying to install AVG. I might be prepared to do this, were it not for two issues: 1) several people who have tried this report that it still doesn't work, and 2) since AVG installs via a network download (rather than allowing me to create a standalone install package first, then disconnect from the internet) I'd have to have an unprotected machine with a live internet connection during the install, with no guarantee that I'd end up with a successful installation. Given that, and the lack of response from AVG support, I'm looking for an alternative solution. I've asked a few people I know for recommendations, and I've been pointed to either Kaspersky or Avast as good products. Nobody, however, seemed to think that relying on the McAfee product was a particularly good idea. Re: OT: Advice wanted for Antivirus/Firewall (Windows 10)
I found that Avast and malwares bytes are good. But this should not lull you into a sense of false security. Malware and viruses can often spread faster than companies can update their systems. Windows 10 firewall and defender have a good reputation as well. Often attacks are spread by impersonating reputable organisations and convincing the user to download a file or to fill in a form with personal information. No security software can prevent this. One issue is ransomware that encrypts you data files and demands money for the key to unlock them. The recommended practice is to have versioned backups of your data as a single backup may be encrypted as well. So whatever software you use be careful. Philip Northeast www.aviewfinderdarkly.com.au On 5/04/2016 9:40 AM, John Francis wrote: We have recebtly accquired a new PC for use at home. For the last heaven knows how many years we've used AVG Internet Security on all our home systems, but I'm less than happy with trying to get AVG up and running on this new system. Re: PESO: Bananas!
I liked seeing banana trees on a couple of our holidays. Our climate is far too cold for them but they're a very popular fruit in this country. They're imported mostly from Ecuador or the Phillipines and the ripening process tends to vary a bit. A couple of years ago there was a problem with one of the ships and we ended up with some bananas with Russian stickers on them. Cheers, Dave > On Apr 5, 2016, at 2:09 AM, Daniel J. Advice wanted for Antivirus/Firewall (Windows 10)
Hello John, I tried all the Free AV stuff you mention + some more. So I removed all of them including Symantec or something that came bundled with my Toshiba 4K laptop running Windows 10. I also removed Spybot Search & Destroy as I read online that it shuts down Microsoft AV & Firewall. So you guessed it right now, I downloaded the Free Windows Defender from the Microsoft Web Site. Along with Windows Firewall that came pre-loaded with Windows 10. They are both doing a great job. Microsoft even added a right click link on any file to scan it for viruses. And it automatically updates itself daily without fail. Give it a trial without biasing yourself from internet reads. Regards.
