Oh yes. It was no picnic for any convicts transported to Australia but
the ones who ended up in Tasmania saw especially harsh treatment.

I suspect it probably doesn't date to the same period as the barracks

Thanks for the comment, Ken. Personally I think the structure on the

Re: Pentax Multi Mount.

2016-09-12 Thread Brian Walters
I recall seeing this system a couple of years ago too. It seems like a
lot of effort for not a lot of benefit and a number of compromises. But
maybe I'm just biased because most of my non-Pentax lenses are Konica
and the short lens register distance of those doesn't allow infinity
focus (as with m4/3).

I think that's a bit beyond my sphere of influence

Re your other suggestion (in an earlier post) about an Open Gallery
section each month. We did that for a couple of years after I took over
PUGmiester duties but we rarely got more than one or two submissions,
which is why I replaced it with an Open Gallery as one of the monthly
themes. It's a bit more work to include an Open Gallery each month - not
overwhelming but I wonder if it's worth it for a couple of submissions.

The Open Gallery month morphed into the World Photo Day theme for the
past two years. Maybe we should just go back to the general Open
Gallery month in 2017.

These barracks are located on a high cliff at Stanley on the north coast
of Tasmania, where they have been exposed to gales from Bass Strait for
about 180 years. Time has taken its toll:

Konica lenses mount lenses can probably be had for an off key song,
despite some being of very high quality, using 4:3 system lenses seems
to be a recipe for frustration...

It seems babies come in their own time :D I hope you're doing plenty of
knitting.

Ours was due within a few days of my birthday so I was hoping to transfer it to
her. If it's her birthday instead of mine, I won't get any older. She
apparently had different plans.

Thanks for the wishes everyone, it's an exciting and scary time and I'm anxious
to get back to the hospital.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: PESO - jigsaw

2016-09-12 Thread Bruce Walker
You better believe I'm waiting for the right dancer(s) to work with,
Larry. I love dancers because they move so fluidly, gracefully and can
improvise poses to die for on the spot.

I worked with a wonderful dancer who, sadly, does not do nude work,
but I got great shots with her. Here's a gallery of her improvising
with a hunk of rope I gave her ...

http://portfolio.brucemwalker.com/index/G2VbXbemyuRg

(The shots where she's in a one-piece leotard.)

I have contact info for two fabulous art nude dancers, one local and
one in Montreal. When the French one comes to Toronto next I just
might get them together for a shoot. It would be a blast I know.

Re: PESO - jigsaw

2016-09-12 Thread Bruce Walker
I did do some lying down shots, Igor, and they are coming up in my
retouching list.

But to address your idea that lying horizontally might make it easier
to create the curves-match, well yes, but I'd not get the same results
at all because: gravity.

At the risk of sounding crude -- wait, you are married, are you not?
Have you ever spent any time observing the effects of gravity on the
human female breast? The shape of breasts varies wildly depending on
their owner's orientation; most notably: standing, lying on side,
lying on back, on hands and knees.

So the only way to get that perfect teardrop shape (two intersecting
catenary curves) with both Dorrie and Camille, they had to be
standing.

And for the lying shots, I climbed up a 12 foot ladder. I wasn't
directly overhead, so there's a slight angle to the shots, but it was
safer for them in case I dropped that 7 pound camera!

I'd love to have a proper lift or a loft. Maybe when I can afford a
better studio. :)

Thanks once again, Igor.

Excellent idea, well executed, but I think it is worth revisiting with what you
have learned.
I wonder if maybe you could find models from the dance communities. Igor or I
might be able to introduce you to people in the blues, fusion, lindy or tango
communities.
One of my first nude photo shoots was an attempt at dance photos.
Unfortunately, that was also one of my first photo shoots and my technical
skills were sorely lacking. It is a concept that I've been meaning to revisit.

Re: PESO - jigsaw

2016-09-12 Thread Bruce Walker
At least I made you feel something, Jack. :)

You may be much more perceptive of a person's comfort levels than I
am, Jack; I just don't see it -- the strain, that is. They _are_
positioned very unnaturally in order to get the geometry I desired.
But they claimed they were pretty comfortable and were able to hold
the pose for a time while I instructed them to make small adjustments
like the angle of raised arms to get shoulder blades into position.

It may be that with other models, perhaps more flexible -- yoga
instructors for instance -- that I can get even more "natural",
composed looks. I will try that when I next get a chance. (I only know
one nude art model who is great at yoga.)

I'm always serious about these shoots. It takes too much effort to
coordinate these things not to go all out.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Jack!

Like PJ, I always look forward to seeing the PUG every month, and
usually forward the link to others of my acquaintance who enjoy seeing
the images. I not only appreciate the quality of the photos, but also,
because we're an international group it's interesting to see the
different interpretations of the themes by members whose culture and/or
background is different from mine.

And...as PJ and others have said, I, too, appreciate the effort you put
forth getting the gallery up and running every month. Thanks again for
all your work.

So let's be real. I always look forward to the PUG. In fact most
months I even shoot a few images with the PUG in mind, look at them a
few days before the deadline, decide that they're all shit, and decide
to see what everyone else did.

I don't comment often, mainly because everyone who participates, puts
mostly their best work there, and comments that start and end with
great work, are kind of boring.

I know most people like to be patted on the head, but after the third
of forth posting of that kind of thing, it's all kind of redundant,
and if I'm not able to add anything additional, I don't comment, (not
that it's ever stopped me in some cases but hey).

Brian, you've been doing a great job, and deserve praise for keeping
the PUG up to date. I for one would be sorry to see it go.

Actually I'm beginning to wonder if the PUG has run its course. It's
getting to that time of year when themes for 2017 need to be selected
but it seems that interest in the PUG is waning. There's still a
reasonable level of contribution each month but, over the past few
months there's been little or no feedback. Is anyone actually looking
at it each month?

I was thinking the same, Brian..

I did read what you posted and agree with you on Gonz.. - I have a
couple of others I felt were standouts - and overall it looked good..
but not as good as lastyear... I loved Pat's redo, though... but it was
because of his linking to the one of his from last year that Iooked at
the whole gallery from then

I wasn;t all that happy with my submission this year , especially after
last year, when the shot I got

was something I was proud of . Though possibly the pressure of having
to shoot in one day is not everyone's cup of tea... I'm included in
that, especially

since August is not a nice time to be out in NYC...

Maybe we should just have an open gallery every month?? a "show us your
best stufffrom your genre" I'd kinda miss doing it myself, but it is a

lot of work for you, I'm sure.

Most places give you a few days to settle on a name, but don't wait too
long. I once met a fellow who was in his late 20s & was stuck with the
name "Boy" because his parents waited too long.

Tell mama I said congratulations & tell baby I said "Happy Birthday!"

Re: PESO: Intl. Photo Day 2016

2016-09-12 Thread John

I look at it every month, probably several times. I don't often comment
if I haven't managed to submit an entry of my own.

I do try to keep the themes in mind & look for photo-ops, but often what
I come up with seems too bland & unimaginative to share, so the
submission deadline arrives & I still don't have anything.

Actually it does. I set one up a few years ago and promptly forgot

look at the records. Apparently I set up the counter in late 2011 and
it's obvious that there's a peaking of views when the PUG is uploaded
each month. Here's a record of PUG traffic since 1 July this year:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PUG-Hits.JPG

The hits peaked on 6/7 July, 6/7 August and 6/7 September, coinciding
with my posts to the list that new galleries were ready for viewing -
not sure what caused the spike on 25 July though. The September peak
was the largest by far, so lots of people looked even though there was
no feedback on the list.

On that basis, it looks as if there's still interest in keeping the
gallery going.

Yes it was a nice moment in a pretty stressful few days (see my other thread).

It was nice to see a couple of fish and a few eels in the river too, but my
fish photo didn't turn out quite as well.

Cheers,

GESO Scotch Trek

2016-09-12 Thread Larry Colen
Some photos from my party yesterday. We had a lot of fun, watched old
episodes of Star Trek (and Galaxy Quest), made ice cream using liquid
Nitrogen, played Fizzball, had a quick tour of the Isles.

The photos are shown mostly for entertainment rather than artistic
value. A few of the photos of Fizzball were not taken by me.

Fizzball was originally documented in this comic:

Very nice photo of a Monster Eyed Bug.

Stacked from about 70 shots, made at f/8. The lens has less contrast
than I expected, or it is more prone to flare than I'm aware of.

Still working on how to set the lighting well. For this one I used a
flash and two LED lights. To get a proper balance between the light
sources I had to use shutter speeds of 1/15s. Because of that, it's too
soft focused, but okay for web. Got to get around to work on a setup
with more than one flash.
