If it was that important to me, I would be seeking assistance from a
professional print restorer. While it is easy to obtain information from the
internet, it can't give you the experiential skills that are furnished by years
in a trade.

Subject: PESOs: The Miracle of Flight

I’m fascinated with moments in flight. They reveal much about something we
can’t see very well without the aid of a camera, because it happens so fast.

In the first picture, a female sparrow pushes off from a perch. She seems to
be launching with a huge effort and instant velocity, as she shows motion
blur at 1/1000th second.

https://www.photo.net/photo/18409841/3394

In another pic, a male sparrow is captured in flight. His wings are probably
moving at least as fast as the hummingbirds, although common belief would
have it otherwise. Both this sparrow and the hummingbird were shot at
1.1000th of a second, and here we see at least as much motion blur as in the
hummingbird pic. Of course, this is a small sample, but I find it
interesting.

I'm speaking more to using the histogram post exposure in rendering. At that

indeed tell you a very co

Thanks, Ken. I confess I don’t understand the histogram very well and have
not tried to make use of it. In light of your suggestion I took at look at
Lightroom’s version of it and played around with it a little. Didn’t make
much progress sorting it out. At the moment it seems a more complicated,
perhaps more sophisticated, way of doing what I do by manipulating
 Lightroom’s tone controls.

Exactly, they don't lie, but they can't tell you the whole story
either. And they only show you reflected light, not incident. The more
tools you have to measure light the better informed you'll be with

Still, not using histograms is to miss out on a lot of great exposure
info, and probably get poorer exposures.

It's quite interesting, it looks like mossy stone tiles to me. Too messy to be
the roof of the Van Gogh house. Travelling south through France it's very
interesting to see how the styles of rooves and tiles changes with the climate.

I cycled through Auvers /Oise 3 or 4 years ago just after sitting outside the
Jean Gabin museum in Meriel nearby, eating a baguette because the museum was
closed, then following a very interesting Roman road (chaussee Jules Cesar)
right into Paris.

It is the anniversary of Van Gogh's death in a few days.

taken with P645 one early foggy morning in 1999…

So we had a flood. The garage had water up to 26.5 inches. It would have taken
27.5 inches for the water from the river to begin flowing on into the house, so
that was the good news.
But among other items not removed from the garage before the water rose was a
trunk containing many posters, photo prints, commercial prints (e.g. my
collection of Byte Magazine cover artwork).
Now that I have cleaned, repaired, or discarded everything else from the
garage, it is time to start salvaging the artwork.

Some of the prints have been easy. Soak, wash gently, rinse, squeegee, and
place in a blotter book. Seems to be working. But THE print in question is
about 80% stuck to the glass from the frame. Yes it was matted, but either the
mat was too flimsy or it softened too much due to the soaking it received in
the flood. So the print is stuck to the glass.

I have the glass + print soaking in a large trey. I think/hope eventually the
print will float off.

So here (at last) is the question: how long can I leave a photographic print to
soak? Is there some point at which the emulsion will begin to decompose? I
would rather let it be for a few hours rather than trying to peel it off the
glass, but I don’t know how long I can wait before I cause more damage.

I may or may not be able to find the negative from which I printed, and I would
kinda like to salvage and retain the original print…

Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: OT - Migrating Win10 to a new boot drive

2017-07-24 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Yolanda - I think you gave me the magic words to google.
Googling "make a bootable image of Win10 hard drive" took me to a step
by step article that seems to address what I need to do. I have a
bootable rescue disk (thumbrdive actually) and a system image backup but
the documentation for the system back says it will not work if the
destination drive is smaller than then source. But I think the page I
just found might do the trick...

I hate relying totally upon downloading software. It's one thing when
you have a reliable connection (not where I live) and one can trust
that the program will be available (trust m$? nah).

Good luck with the install and migration!

leave the 320 gb HDD for data. The laptop is pretty bare bones -
just the OS, Photoshop, Office 2007 and a handful of other apps.
All told less than 40gb of drive space is used. Aside from the C
drive there are two recovery partitions, one at the start of the
drive and one at the end. Laptop is a Thinkpad x220 with legacy
bios, no UEFI partion...

So - what would be the best way to move the system? It seems that
many clone programs - e.g. Filezilla - say they cannot clone a
larger drive to a smaller one. Tools like EaseUS partition manager
sound good but reading the comments on their websites they also
have limits when it comes to shrinking partitions. And there also
seem to be problems with getting the newly cloned partition to be
bootable. In the past I've moved older versions of Windows to
larger drives and used my install media to make the cloned
partition bootable, but I have no installation media with this
laptop. I've used the bootfix and bcdboot command to troubleshoot
boot problems on Win10 in the past, so maybe the bootablity issue
can be overcome.

Any insights or experiences re what approach would work best? I
hope to receive the drive later this week.

I'm thinking of the color profile assigned to your monitor - but not
using a Mac I don't know that I can help. On a Windows machine there is
a color profile assigned to your monitor that is used by Lightroom and
other apps to adjust the colors so that what you see is accurate. If
there is a problem with that profile the machine adjusts the colors
erroneously and can produce the kinds of color shifts you are seeing. I
assume things work more or less the same on a Mac but don't know how you
would check them out.

How do the images look on another screen - phone or tablet or another
computer?

Thanks, Mark. Do you mean color settings in the camera? I have been using the

Re: OT - Migrating Win10 to a new boot drive

2017-07-24 Thread Mark C
I may wind up trying to shrink the partition but I think that the small
recovery partition at the end of my drive will cause problem. From what
I read it seems that some of the clone tools (and also Windows Backup)
don't look at just the active partition space but rather the space from
the start of the disk to the end of the last active partition. So
unallocated space is counted unless it is at the end of the drive, and
my drive has a small recovery partition there. At least that is in the
documentation regarding restoring windows system images and I believe
for Clonezilla as well - unallocated space has to be at the end of the
drive to be ignored. The windows disk management tool can shrink
partitions but (AFAIK) cannot move them. I think gparted might be able
to move partitions but I'm not familiar with it, only running it a few
times to do Linux installs. It may be that some of the more
sophisticated partition management / clone tools can handle resizing the
partitions to fit a smaller drive.

Thanks, Ken. I confess I don’t understand the histogram very well and have not
tried to make use of it. In light of your suggestion I took at look at
Lightroom’s version of it and played around with it a little. Didn’t make much
progress sorting it out. At the moment it seems a more complicated, perhaps
more sophisticated, way of doing what I do by manipulating Lightroom’s tone

Do you shoot raw and use the three color histogram to check your
exposure? When you blow out a channel on exposure, then it will screw
up the color balance, because the other channels will still increase in
value while the blown out channel will clip. Likewise, if you shoot in
jpeg, the channels will clip a lot earlier, and arbitrarily based on how
the camera processes, and that would really cause weird color balance

Re: OT - Migrating Win10 to a new boot drive

2017-07-24 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Toine, I'll take a look at Acronis. In the past I used
Clonezilla but they openly not the issue with larger to smaller
partitions. And I also had to make the cloned image bootable. But if
Acronis is bundled iwth SSD's then it maybe overcomes those issues.

The laptop is pretty bare bones - just the OS, Photoshop, Office 2007 and a
handful of other apps. All told less than 40gb of drive space is used. Aside
from the C drive there are two recovery partitions, one at the start of the
drive and one at the end. Laptop is a Thinkpad x220 with legacy bios, no
UEFI partion...

So - what would be the best way to move the system? It seems that many clone
programs - e.g. Filezilla - say they cannot clone a larger drive to a
smaller one. Tools like EaseUS partition manager sound good but reading the
comments on their websites they also have limits when it comes to shrinking
partitions. And there also seem to be problems with getting the newly cloned
partition to be bootable. In the past I've moved older versions of Windows
to larger drives and used my install media to make the cloned partition
bootable, but I have no installation media with this laptop. I've used the
bootfix and bcdboot command to troubleshoot boot problems on Win10 in the
past, so maybe the bootablity issue can be overcome.

Any insights or experiences re what approach would work best? I hope to
receive the drive later this week.

PESOs: The Miracle of Flight

2017-07-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
I’m fascinated with moments in flight. They reveal much about something we
can’t see very well without the aid of a camera, because it happens so fast.

In the first picture, a female sparrow pushes off from a perch. She seems to be
launching with a huge effort and instant velocity, as she shows motion blur at
1/1000th second.

https://www.photo.net/photo/18409841/3394

In another pic, a male sparrow is captured in flight. His wings are probably
moving at least as fast as the hummingbirds, although common belief would have
it otherwise. Both this sparrow and the hummingbird were shot at 1.1000th of a
second, and here we see at least as much motion blur as in the hummingbird pic.
Of course, this is a small sample, but I find it interesting.

Thanks, Mark. Do you mean color settings in the camera? I have been using the
Fuji pretty exclusively for a while now—with just one lens, a 27 mm. I’ll take

Thanks for calling my attention to the way of turning off the indicators, Rick.
Most what I see with them turned are minuscule blue dots in black areas and red
on sources of bright light. I don’t think I would miss much important detail,
if any, if the overexposure indicator were turned off.

Sable Dam is the only permanent water in the local part of the Kruger Park
at this time of the year. Being only 12km from the Phalaborwa gate, it
very

popular with day tripping locals. Late Sat. morning, there was a Leopard
sighting at the dam. Social media enticed hordes of visitors (including
me -

returning, having seen the Leopard in the morning & hoping for another
sighting) but we got far more than we bargained for. Early arrivals who
went

to the E corner of the dam where the Leopard had been spotted earlier were
cut off by a large herd of Elephants which approached behind them from the
N. Later arrivals, including me, were forced to stop at the NW corner of
the

Dam. We were entertained by a relay of elephants having mud-baths, mock
fighting, trumpeting & rumbling all amongst the cars. They
then slowly moved off along the dry river bed to the W. Most of the cars
then moved to the E corner only to encounter a second herd arriving from
the

NE. A third herd also arrived from the SW & entered the mud from the other
side. The cars were all trapped between the two herds. Fortunately the
Elephants weren't particularly aggressive & the drivers well behaved so we
were able to enjoy spectacular sightings of Elephant behaviour without
incident. However, I must say it was very scary to be trapped in the
middle

of over 100 Elephants. This GESO cannot really reproduce the drama but it
does give some idea. There is also a shot of a Spoonbill calmly dabbling
for
food, completely unfazed by the Elephants & one of the Leopard taken in
the

morning.

A really nice restoration though there's hardly anything original on it.

That would be great! I’m very grateful, Alan, and the honor would be mine to
have your photo on my wall. If it’s easy enough, feel free to put your name in
a lower corner. If it’s not convenient to do so, when I print the photo, I
will write your name in the lower right hand corner, so people will know it’s
your photograph. Sound good?

Big cheers, Christine

I don't normally do this Dan but that's such a 'nearly but not quite' shot.

YMMV but:

1. I'd put that dead centre of frame if it were me.
2. I'd reshoot it with maximum DoF - possibly shooting at different
focus settings and amalgamating the images to provide as much focus
across the subject. If not possible, I would concentrate focus on the
majority of the 'cone' part at the top.
3. The stem has a burnt out highlights - edit or reshoot.

The colour saturation and the contrast is lovely for me. I think it's
such a good shot that it's worth re-doing :-)

Hope this is received in the spirit it was offered.

Re: PESO sweet 16

2017-07-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
The Mercedes is the W196R streamlined of 1954-55. It was built for Grand Prix
competition. There was an open wheel version as well.
You had me going with "rail." A piece of railroad track? It's a top fuel
dragster from the mid 1960s. Ford sponsored this car to showcase their new SOHC
hemi engine. Lou Baney wrenched it and Don Prudhomme drove it. The Ford engines
proved somewhat fragile with big loads of nitromethane, but were somewhat
successful until Ford abandoned them, probably due to NASCAR not allowing them
in stock car competition.

GESO: Elephant Spectacular

2017-07-24 Thread Alan C

Sable Dam is the only permanent water in the local part of the Kruger Park
at this time of the year. Being only 12km from the Phalaborwa gate, it very
popular with day tripping locals. Late Sat. morning, there was a Leopard
sighting at the dam. Social media enticed hordes of visitors (including me -
returning, having seen the Leopard in the morning & hoping for another
sighting) but we got far more than we bargained for. Early arrivals who went
to the E corner of the dam where the Leopard had been spotted earlier were
cut off by a large herd of Elephants which approached behind them from the
N. Later arrivals, including me, were forced to stop at the NW corner of the
Dam. We were entertained by a relay of elephants having mud-baths, mock
fighting, trumpeting & rumbling all amongst the cars. They
then slowly moved off along the dry river bed to the W. Most of the cars
then moved to the E corner only to encounter a second herd arriving from the
NE. A third herd also arrived from the SW & entered the mud from the other
side. The cars were all trapped between the two herds. Fortunately the
Elephants weren't particularly aggressive & the drivers well behaved so we
were able to enjoy spectacular sightings of Elephant behaviour without
incident. However, I must say it was very scary to be trapped in the middle
of over 100 Elephants. This GESO cannot really reproduce the drama but it
does give some idea. There is also a shot of a Spoonbill calmly dabbling for
food, completely unfazed by the Elephants & one of the Leopard taken in the
morning.
