Both are very nice, Rick with great rendition of the colors in the windows. Taking image of stained glass appear to be a simple process, but it is not. I tried that at Notre Dame and Rouen last year, and it is tricky indeed. You obviously have the knack, rick. Re: Lens naming in LR cameraraw.dll file, who knows what I donot know.
Hi Jostein, Thanks for your response. Your list of lens ID,s contains a lens that I had: the Sigma 10-20mm with lens ID 152.3 (according to your list) I have a picture taken with a K5 and this Sigma 10-20mm. When I read its metadata with the little program "PhotoMe", it shows lens ID: 3 44 (and not the 152.3 of your list) When I import this photo into lightroom, the lens is named: "Sigma or Tamron lens" Many Sigma lenses have the lens ID "3 44" My understanding is that LR translates the ID "3 44" into the name "Sigma or Tamron lens" LR uses its file "cameraraw.dll" to do this. When I open this cameraraw file with the little program HxD, I found the "3 44" and the wording "Sigma or Tamron lens" As I have only one Sigma lens in possession with the ID "3 44" , I changed the wording in the cameraraw file in: "Sigma 10-20mm /4-5.6 EX" From now on, my pictures taken with this lens, get the correct name at importing. The cameraraw file I have is the most recent of Lightroom CC classic. According my understanding, if Lightroom is using the cameraraw file for naming, it could name many lenses, but not Nikon and Canon, because I do not see their names in the CRfile. So, what is it what I do not know? I hope someone on the list knows what I donot know of this issue.? Greetz, Jos On 7/18/2018 11:54 PM, Jostein wrote: Hi Jos, You are deeper into the code than I have ever ventured, but I know that Adobe needs to decode the so-called Makernote-tags in EXIF to extract info about lenses. I know from experience that some lens codes between Sigma and Pentax overlap, so maybe the .dll contains code to try to discern between lenses based on multiple tags. That would at least explain why the brand names show up in a pre-compiled library. It would not surprise me at all if the large brands have implemented lens-ID encoding in such a way as to be unique, self-contained, and by such and algorithm that the lens names can be extracted without ambiguity. Take, for example, a look at how the Canon lens-IDs are sorted in EXIF here: https://sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Canon.html#LensType HTH, Jostein Den 18.07.2018 11:47, skrev Jos de Fotograaf: Dear group, I was looking into the cameraraw.dll file to correct the lensname of some of my SIGMA lenses. I noticed that there are lensnames for Pentax, Sigma, Tamron and some more brands, but not for Canon or Nikon. My question is: how is the lensnaming for Canon and Nikon applied in Lightroom, is there another system than applied for Pentax? That works well - you keep some email adresses to yourself for (say) moving data around between devices, and other email addresses for friends, relatives, colleagues, and still more for different types of public and retail. Re-reading this, I sound less friendly than I intended so I apologize. I guess that related to what I am trying to say is that if you have a nut to loosen there are multiple tools that might be employed to do the job (crescent wrench, open end wrench, box end wrench, combination wrench (using either the box or open end side), rachet wrench, nut driver, socket set, or even a vise grip. Which one you CAN use in any given situation is going to depend on things like how much space you have to operate in; and it is going to RESULT in things like how long it takes to get the job done (with some methods faster than others). I think photography is kind of the same way. The tool we use camera/format/sensor size/lens focal length/lens aperture/etc are all sort of like that choice of tools to loosen a nut. But sometimes we just look at all cameras as a hammer and then we look at every imagemaking opportunity as a nail. Thinking about what a particular camera/lens/sensor size/focal length/aperture brings to the final image (as opposed to using a different tool) is part of the challenge of getting better than average images. Re: testA
It's actually not the cheapest for domain registration, but I've been paying for a domain name for several years with Earthlink. Like you, I've found that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and haven't taken the time to really develop a good web site. The subscription allows creation of up to 100 email addresses of which I've used only a few. -p On 7/19/2018 10:56 AM, John Sessoms wrote: I have domain names I've been paying for for years that I was going to use for a photography website. If I get that up and running, I'll move my PDML subscription over to there and be done with earthlink, yahoo & time-warner roadrunner (at least for PDML). Re: My first roll of film in a Pentax in decades
Interesting. When I had my Pentax 6X7, the image quality was outstanding. Mostly, however, I made contacts and then had enlargement printed. I had only 2 lenses for it, both primes. Did you really mean to say you had been using DSLR cameras for 45 years? I didn't think they have been around that long. Just a perfect sunset shot. thanks. Unfortunately, I missed the perfect sunset shot because I was trying to change lenses to catch it, and in the process missed the largest outflow from the hole. Lesson learned, next time I go there with both bodies, one with a long lens the other with wide. Re: My first roll of film in a Pentax in decades
You have to mean 2000 dpi. 200 dpi only gives you 450 x 550 on a 2-1/4 x 2-3/4 negative. I think people forget the original “purpose” or reason for larger format (film) a) it requires less enlargement for the same sized print (magnifying fewer of the physical film limitations, like grain) - so is better suited for prints that are going to be wall-sized enlargements. This is not going to be well seen (appreciated) if the display is on your monitor or typical web page display. b) people either forget or don’t know about how DOF is thinner, at equivalent apertures, all other things being equal. This made medium format especially great for portraits & weddings (closer focus photography vs infinity photography). This page well explains this and shows it in the SLOW sign photo, down the page: https://web.archive.org/web/20160819084802/http://silverbased.org/dof-vs-format/ So for example if you think the razor thin DOF of a 50mm f1.2 is great for a shot you can achieve the same look with the 6x7 105mm f2.4 (both wide open, obviously). Frankly, Larry, your choice of subject, focal distance, AND display would not show any of these advantages, even with the lens I mentioned. -- “The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness ” ― Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Earth from Above -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Oh crickey you've reminded me that I still haven't tested out the gizmo that Mark Roberts loaned me to try before I buy !! I suppose the good news is that because we are moving house (slowly!) I will be able to find all my negs in the attic so that I can then put the hardware together, source the software, and then *try* and do some scans.
