It is larger than the standard kit lens, but one has hood mounted, the

I also see from the illustrations that the natural focal length is 31
mm (that's where it is most compact). That's very cool, a 31mm normal
 lens with zoom capabilities.

BTW. I've already got the FA 20-35. I already love that lens. Except

All that said. I might end up buying both :-)

The old DA* has let me down now and then because of lack of sharpness.
Maybe my copy was a bad one, or maybe I expect to much.

I've never had actual problems with the size and bulk of the DA*. But

 From: P.J. Alling

 It doesn't really replace the K-5 it replaces the K-30. I haven't
read the whole thing but it's body specifications are half a step
higher than the K30 with the same image processor and I would assume
image sensor or close enough. That implies a 12 bit/channel images.

The K-5 II retained the Prime II processor because the Prime M though
faster didn't support 14 bit images. Pentax could leave the K-5II/IIs in
their product line for quite a while even with this K50 in the line. The
name does however make further hash of the K naming conventions so, Way
to Go Pentax!!, if that part is true.

If this is real, it'd take the place of the K-5/II/IIs pretty well if
(and only if) they release a higher-end body at the same time.

Also (again, if this is real), I'm glad they got rid of the ugly
concave space above the lens on the K-30.

Three flashes and a lot of other stuff involved in the color picture,
one single flash in the bw.

I think I need to controll the spill light better in this very tight
room. You can see my DIY v-flats in the third image. I need to paint
 one side black.

Later today I will have more fun photographing me and Marit (my
 significant other).

I have enabled myself with a Eye-Fi card. So now I'm shooting RAW+
WiFi transfering small jpg on the fly into Lightroom. You can set up
the card to trsnsfer jpg only. That speed things up a lot.
Highly recomended, makes it so much easier to finetune the light.

This morning my wife and I took a tour of a few very small back water towns
in our area. Was looking for history in any form. Was equipped with both the
K-5 and K20. I collected a passel of shots, but they are all of this
building. May post another piece or two later.
I found parking in the area very restrictive. Consequently, most were shot
 with the K20/DA 16~45. Got a few with K-5/DA*50~135.
Went out early hoping for a bit of sweet light, but all I encountered were
deep shadows in those areas I wanted.. May back track some day and try a
 couple scenes again.

 Comments?

Creases on the backdrop? The doctors must have done a good job on your eyes :-)

I don't have much room to move farther away from the back. Could shoot
with wider aperture, but dang thats hard when you are not behind the
camera. That leaves one alternative, Photoshop. I've already done some
Healing, but could probably have done a better job.

Damn, you _are_ hard to please Ann ;-)

P.J. is right, at least in my case. If/when Pentax introduces a full
frame DSLR, I will probably buy one (eventually) but I won't be one of
the first in line. A full frame sensor, by itself doesn't really gain
 you anything except:
 1) shallower DOF (at the same focal length, compared to a APS-C)
 2) losing the crop factor (meaning your 15mm is a 15mm FOV instead of
a 22mm FOV) - helpful at the wide angle end and for tilt-shift lens
 users.
 3) more megapixels (potentially significant depending upon the pixel pitch)
 4) if a larger pixel pitch, then potentially better noise performance
 at equivalent ISOs

The latest seems to be the officially deemed FAKE mid-March 2013 rumor

Instead we got 9 bold new colors for the K-30 (which BTW was no longer
on display at Tiger Direct during my weekly music/computer store
 pilgrimage last week).

Since then, all I'm aware of is the recurring generic rumor that Pentax
will announce a Full Frame DSLR next year.

The beauty being that the the rumor will always be fresh, there is always a
 next year...

Adaptor stuck at an adaptall lens

2013-05-02 Thread Tim Øsleby
Hey guys. It's been a long time, but I'm still lurking.
BTW. I just bought a few things from another part time lurker. But
this is not why I'm calling for your attention.

The thing is that I've been unlucky (or plain stupid) and have got an
Tamron adaptor stuck on a lens. And the lens is a jewel the 400/4 so
I'm pretty desperate now.

It's a long story. But the short version is that I've just given the
lens some TLC after a unpleasant meeting with the ground. This damaged
the mount and the adaptor. So I bought a spare lens and a new adaptor,
and moved the new mount to my precious. Everything seemed OK. I tested
it, and everything worked as it supposed to do.

But now after I unmounted, and then remounted the adaptor it is
completely stuck at the lens. It seems like I've managed the
unmanageable, to mount the adapter about 1/3 of a turn wrong
clockwise.

Do you know a fix for this?
I've googled for a solution, but haven't found any relevant info.

Yes, both Pentax F*250-600/5.6 and FA*250-600/5.6 are f/5.6 across the range
and with autofocus. They are both expensive and difficult to get hold of, but
I got one probably because of the missing tripod mount.

After receiving it and checking condition, I started out with FreeCAD to make
a drawing of the mount. I have never used a CAD program before and struggled
a little bit in the beginning. But after three long evenings, it was
finished. I sent the drawing file to Shapeways and got a plastic mount two
weeks later. The plastic mount is solid enough to test it on a tripod and
after some small adjustments on the drawing, I sent the files to a company
who will make it of aluminum. I am promised to have this in the week or two.

Here are some pictures of it with the plastic mount.

Re: FSF: Bucket full of lenses (and a camera)

I have collected 28mm nor written a review.

But I CAN tell that the Komine below is a mighty fine lens.
If you're looking for a affordable fast manual focus auto 28mm, then
that's the one.

It is sharp (if you add a bit extra contrast in PP), well built, and
focuses rather close for a wide angle lens.

 1) There's no such thing as a terrible 28mm lens.

In light of this, I never wrote the review, and here are some of those

2012/10/15 Tim Bray tb...@textuality.com:
 That’s a beautiful picture.

My Norwegian ancestors left the ancestral farm in a location looking
very much like that, just before 1900, to move to Montana, North
Dakota, and Alberta; leaving behind the green and the mountains,
homesteading in the brutal prairie climate. When I went back to see
the valley near the fjord, I thought they must have been crazy to
 leave this.

Weirdly, it turned out to be a brilliant choice: I think it would have
been quite difficult for a small farmer in Northern Europe, surrounded
by family, to break out and try a new life. In North America, within
a couple of generations the family was full of university professors
and bankers and business owners and so on. Just an accident of
landing in a place at a time when there was so much empty space to be
 filled; geographical, economic, and cultural.

But they suffered along the way. My father’s grandmother came over
from Norway pregnant; she had 12 children and only 4 lived to
adulthood. It’s a time that’s unimaginable to someone used to
 21st-century life. -T

thought great., i'll be able to get some out door group shots. The
position of the sun and gazebo was horrid for shadows so i shot into
the sun with my D200 and used the sb800 for fill. That part worked
well, however the winds were just awful, really really strong and
blowing all sorts of stuff around, and i suppose thats were the dust
came from that i see as lens flare on those shots. Two big ones, one
is at camera top so i can crop that one out, but i have a number of
shots with a big dust lens flare at mid body of any one standing at my
far left. Not sure how i can get that out.

The rest of the shots went well, just some WB adjustments and sharping
 should do the trick.

I'm pissed at my self for the dust, not visible in the monitor, i'm
sure the bride wont mind to much, but i wanted to do a good job non
 the less.

I think i will refuse any incoming wedding requests from now on.

2012/6/5 Daniel J. Matyola danmaty...@gmail.com:
 Sorry, Tim.

My quote was from a famous Amnerican poem:

 MENDING WALL
 Robert Frost

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
 I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
 Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me~
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, Good fences make good neighbors.

2012/6/6 Mark Roberts postmas...@robertstech.com:
I'm just getting around to sorting out my GFM photos. I didn't get
time to shoot a lot this year (but I did put two rolls of slide film
through the 67), so there isn't a huge amount to show. But I kinda
like this one. On Saturday morning a few of us went out to a trail on
the North side of the mountain to shoot on one of the streams there. I
didn't have the 80-200 zoom that would have let me frame the shot I
wanted (left it in the car...) so I shot several frames with my 180mm
macro to stitch together. Without a pan head the alignment was very
sloppy, so I had to get creative with the final product (which is, by
 the way, 7500 x 10,500 pixels). Here's the web-sized version:

To make good photographs out of something two dimensional is rather

 Hi

Was looking for PDML statistics recently (just out of plain curiosity)
 and couldn't find much.
pdml.net only has files starting 2006 and I'm not sure how to get list
 of all messages from mail-archive.

Not sure where is my own archive from 2000 forward, but since I
switched to Gmail at the end of 2004, I quickly grabbed conversation
 counts per year:

 2005    7,831
 2006    7,381
 2007    6,247
 2008    5,009
 2009    5,249
 2010    5,295
 2011    4,841

Again, this is not message count, but conversations as seen by Google.

Thought, it may be interesting to see how other Pentax places on the
net vacuumed some people from this list. Or is it frustration of old
Pentaxians of not getting what they anted from the company?

We had an excellent turnout, despite torrential rains all afternoon

resplendent and charmed everyone. The facility owner was grinning so
much he'll likely need medical attention to his jaw. We even got some
press coverage thanks to my wife's mad promotional skillz.

For once, I didn't carry a camera. I loaned my K100Ds to Marzi

Before I knew it she was trying out low angles and having a great old

I finally had a chance to go back and process the photos of the rest of the
band.   I hate to say this, because it's a bit of a pain in the ass to use,
but the studio strobe seems to have worked pretty well.  I apologize for the
size of the set, but I was compromising between getting a reasonable sized
set for each musician, trimming it down to a reasonable number, and not
spending all night deciding which photos to throw away.   I'm afraid that I
don't remember which photos were taken under which lighting setup. I had
pretty much a straight lamp, lamp shooting through a white umbrella, lamp
with grid, lamp bouncing off a mirror on the far wall with some spill from
the barn door as fill, and even some just using the modeling lamp as a hot
 light.

Re: Which zoom lens for the K-01

2012-04-08 Thread Tim Øsleby
FA 20-35/ might be what your are looking for, if you want a slim high
quality zoom lens lens with AF. Godfrey used to refer it as four
primes in one lens. IMO he is right. I have it, and I really love it.

The two things against it is prize and availability.

If you want something cheaper, then look for a regular 18-55 kit lens.

If you need something slimmer, then get a pan cake prime, and pretend
it's a zoom.

Thank you guys. The left Timis using a ME-super with a FA* 85. The 85
is very functional indeed, the ME is not.

Pauls guessing is near spot on. Except for the chair part. Didn't move
any chairs. Some og you might notice that right Tim les less beard
than left Tim (the devil is in the ...).

The PS job was pretty straight forward. Used three layers, and erased
the parts that I didn't need.

Your descrition is spot on Dario.

Anyway. This was fun. And I'm pretty plaesed with the result.
Except that I could have done a better job with the lighting. I was
working under a deadline for a informal competition in the photot
club, so I didin't have enough time to make the light better.

Let me guess. He took three separate photos with the camera
mounted on a tripod, and he sat in a different chair for each shot.
Each was taken at the same exposure. He then cut them apart

My variation: I'd stack those three pics and then use the rubber to delete
unwanted parts and let lower-layer Tims to show up.

 Very well done Tim!
