Hello all, been a while …

2023-10-22 Thread Brendan MacRae
Hi Gang,

It's been years. But just today I saw a name on a Hagerty Auto
article, "Paul Stenquist," and I stopped in my tracks and thought, "I
know that name!".

https://tinyurl.com/4dexsnzu

Good work, Paul. I enjoyed that thoroughly.

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves on the list. I myself
haven't been shooting much at all. I no longer do any commercial
photography but I'm still a "serial appreciator" of photography in
general even if other things have muscled it to the sidelines these
days.

Some may remember me selling a venerable Pentax-A* 85mm f1.4 for a
1967 Austin-Healey Sprite a long time ago. Well, it's almost
finished...it's only been 12 years...

Mike Johnston of The Online Photographer blog mentioned Here Far Away by
Pentti Sammallahti as his 'book of the year' pick in 2012. I looked through
the preview on Amazon and was intrigued so I ordered a copy at about $50.
They ran out of the first printing, the order was cancelled abruptly, and I
kept going back to see if any were available ... second hand copies were
selling for $100, $125, then $200, then $300 and more. I heard there was
going to be a second printing somewhere around March. It appeared on Amazon
for sale again, at $58, at the beginning of June. I placed an order. Two
weeks later, they sent a notice that it was delayed until the end of August.
I waited. I heard the books were now shipping ... but Amazon kept listing my
book as not shipped and expected delivery by Sept 10. I did another search
and found The Book Depository in the UK listing it as in stock with free
shipping. Placed an order, received a shipping confirmation, and cancelled
 the order with Amaz
 on. The book arrived yesterday.

It was worth the wait and the trouble. A fantastic retrospective of
Sammallahti's work over a forty year span, beautifully presented and printed.
12x10 landscape format, about 256 pages in hardcover. Beautiful beautiful
photographs ... landscape, people, all stunning black and white. Superb
printing and design by Dewi Lewis Publishing.

Give yourself a gift, while it's still available. Information below. :-)

OT: Fixing a failed Hard Drive

2013-09-15 Thread Brendan MacRae
Well, I thought I'd post this here in case anyone needs to know one
way to fix a dead hard drive.

We had a hellacious thunderstorm come through a couple of weeks ago
and with it the requisite amount of earth shaking thunder and
lightning. I had my Dell desktop PC on at the time and we had a power
spike followed by a brief black out. When the power came back on the
computer appeared just fine (it is plugged into a surge protector
which did not trip). A couple of days later after a few start ups I
heard the clicking sound of death from my primary HD. It still managed
to boot and the clicking went away so I ran a defrag and disk clean
and it appeared that the drive was working perfectly.

Two boots later, nothing. Clicking returned and BIOS wouldn't
recognize the drive.

Since this drive is partly backed up and doesn't contain anything
mission critical I decided I would attempt to fix it myself. After
searching the net for all kinds of advice (including some really bad
ideas about heating and freezing the drive) I opted to swap the PCB
board from a like drive and give that a go. $17 drive off eBay arrived
and I swapped boards. Clicking stopped, drive spun, but unfortunately
it still wasn't recognized in the BIOS. Bummer.

I got a low-cost external drive enclosure so that I could more easily
test the unit on another Dell laptop. And after many fruitless and
frustrating attempts to get the computer to see the hard drive I
finally found a site that explained that the 8-pin ROM chip from the
failed drive's PCB needs to be swapped to the good donor board on some
drives. Ok, this isn't the easiest thing to do correctly by a shade
tree mechanic like me, but I gave it a go. You cannot use a soldering
iron, you have to heat the chip contacts with a heat gun and remove
the chip with tweezers. It's not easy and my first attempt failed to
secure the contacts on one side of the chip. Luckily, and
miraculously, a second attempt with the heat gun (modified with a
snout made from aluminum foil making a narrow tip) secured the
contacts when I applied light pressure to the top of the chip. Drive
came back to life on next attempt to connect via USB. Proceeded to
quickly copy any and all needed files.

After all this, the rest of the weekend is pure gravy. note to self:
back up ALL of your drives, dummy

Figured I'd post this since there are innumerable sites referencing
the control board swap but few mention the ROM swap needed for some
drives. For reference this is an 3.5 IDE 160GB WD Caviar from about
2006.

way I wanted it, so I shut it down. I then decided to move it slightly
closer to me on my desk. I leaned forward and pulled it towards me…whereupon
I learned that the 27 iMac is rather top-heavy. It toppled over and hit me
on the top of the head. There was a noise as the glass front over the
display cracked and split…and I got a bunch of glass shards embedded in my
head. After cleaning my bloody head up, I tried to start the computer…and it
booted just fine. Everything works, including the display, though the glass
over it is full of cracks.

Had it less than two days...

I am taking it in to the local Apple service dealer on Monday or Tuesday
 for repairs.

Geez. This is what I get for being so thick-headed!

K-5IIs First Impressions

2013-09-12 Thread Brendan MacRae
First new Pentax I've had since the K-20D arrived yesterday. Here are
the the things I liked immediately:

- Locking Mode Dial
- ISO/compensation buttons and location
- LCD
-100% Finder
- Overall build quality
- low-light focusing is a big improvement
- price from Adorama was 995 with a $100 gift card (card was put
toward battery grip)

Things I didn't like:

- not sure if I want the fn button back or not
- a movie button would be nice but having it on the mode dial is fine
- the SD card door on the K-20 feels more solid than on the K-5IIs
- focus point select and four-way get in each others way

I probably say this about every Pentax and I know it cuts across the
grain as far as their design principle goes but it's too small for me.
I bought the battery grip like I did with the K-10/20 so there's more
to hold and makes it bit heavier which I like in a camera.

I shot some video today and was really pleased at the results. I will
put it up on the HD monitor tomorrow and see what it looks like there.

Overall, I'm not disappointed. The slow low-light focusing of the
K-20D was a big issue for me, the new focusing system is much
improved. The new LCD is very sharp and I like the layout of the menus
- easy to navigate as always (I recently had the misfortune of trying
to navigate the menu on a ND7100 - and no joke, it was a
nightmare).

I'll really try to give it a workout over the weekend and maybe even
post a picture or two.

-Brendan

Re: Sold the 85mm f1.4 for this?

2013-09-09 Thread Brendan MacRae
it's like the old joke: i started my jaguar this morning.

:-)

but, yes, this buy had nothing to do with practicality or sanity for
that matter. i'm just one of those weirdos who loves to restore old
things and this car was ripe for it. i could've spent another $1500+
for a runner, but where's the fun in that? also, i really wanted to
rebuild the engine myself as there are few things more satisfying to
my way of thinking.

in the end, i may never get my money back out of it and that doesn't
bother me in the least. i've already learned so much that it's its own
reward. my whole life i've wanted to restore a car. granted, i thought
it would be 67 Camaro with a Turbo Jet 396, but hey, you gotta start
somewhere! what i'll end up with is a cool little car that gets 35 mpg
and is so easy to work on that i'll never have to bring it to a
mechanic or get it smogged.

K-5II/IIs and OSX 10.6.8

2013-09-08 Thread Brendan MacRae
Has anyone found that the DNG from the K-5II/IIs works in 10.6.8 on
the Mac? Since it's native to 10.7.X and the fact that my Mac can't
go there I need a work around.

Was musing on an upgrade from the K-20D but I don't feel like buying a

Re: K-5II/IIs and OSX 10.6.8

2013-09-08 Thread Brendan MacRae
Hi Godfrey,

I'm just confused since I see that Apple updated its camera raw
compatibility under Lion (update 4.04) for the K-5II. I like the fact
that OSX handles DNG across the entire operating system (like hitting
the spacebar to preview images, including DNG files). Is the DNG from
the newer bodies still compatible with 10.6.8 this way? Has the DNG
format changed in the new bodies? Since I've been using Aperture 2 for
RAW processing (and can't upgrade) I'm hoping for backward
compatibility.

Not exactly sure what you mean. The operating system version isn't generally
relevant to image file formats. The DNG format has been supported on OS X
since Adobe released the version of Camera Raw that processed it around 2004.

You wouldn't need a new computer. You'd need appropriate software that
handles the format. DNG is particularly versatile as even the latest cameras
producing DNG format files can be processed by software written some time
 ago, in most cases.

Can you articulate a little more specifically what potential incompatibility
 you are thinking about?

Unfortunately, Aperture relies upon the OS X core frameworks for its

format for which the core frameworks have not been updated. To use the

Here's a before and after of the 1275cc:

The engine had a blown head gasket, a hole in the no.2 piston, and the
head was cracked. It was rebuilt sometime in the past, but not done
properly. When I got it it was .030 over but now it's .060 over making
it a 1330cc with (roughly) 10:1 compression. The head is a modified
iron 12G940 but now has hardened seats, larger valves, and is ported
and polished. I fitted a street cam, lightened timing gears, the
crank/flywheel are balanced and I had the dual SU's rebuilt by Ed
D'Arata in my office. It has electronic distributor and I have a LCB
header for it. Sticking with the stock 4-speed for now...that was
completely rebuilt, too.

Should make it go pretty well. It ran beautifully on our test stand :-)

The test copy of the 2011 PDML Photo Annual looks great. My S.O. had
judged it the best one yet, both in terms of book design and the
photography it contains. High praise indeed. There are very few image
tweaks to be made and a couple of typos that slipped through the
gauntlet. I should hear in the next day or so about the Pediatric
Oncology Global Outreach official status with Dana-Farber and I'll
make the necessary additions/changes to the copy in the book. We'll be
good to go at that point. Monday? Tuesday? I want to get in under the
wire for the Blurb sale price thing.

I'd like to send out a few copies of the book for promotional purposes
 - to a couple web sites and print publications, some people at Pentax
who've helped and to a couple of the physicians and scientists who are
working on the project. My current part-time faculty position leaves
me in no financial position to pay for this on my own as I have in
previous years, so if any PDMLers are in a position to kick in a
couple of dollars I've set up a donations page at
http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook/donate.htm to help defray the cost
of producing and promoting the PDML Photo Annual.

 Big thanks.

Hi Ken,

Yeah, he's really nearly four now, but he has an eagle eye (pun intended). We
went to the dump the other day and he spied a toy truck sitting on a concrete
pillar from about 40 feet away. He was in his car seat and there was another
car
between us and the truck. I don't know how he does it.

Anyway, I tried messing with the black point (in Aperture) and initially it
didn't make a whole lot of difference. I'm going to adjust it again prior to
printing and I'll see if I can improve upon it. Does it appear overly dark on
your screen? Was wondering if I should adjust the exposure.

Work continues apace on the 2011 book (and I'm bracing myself for the
inevitable last-week rush of submissions soon to come). What I'd like
to get input on at the moment is the notion of changing the charity
the book supports. We've had many problems with CureSearch in the past
two years but the straw that broke the camel's back as far as I'm
concerned is the way they totally dropped the ball regarding the
exhibit in Chicago. They'd said they would do a mailing to their major
donors in Chicage and alert them to the opening, etc. And they
completely failed to follow through on any of it. I know a lot of
oncologists and pathologists who are familiar with NCCF/CureSearch and
whenever I mention the organization I get the same reaction: a sigh
and a rubbing of the temples as if an old, familiar headache is coming
back. CureSearch's is widely regarded as well-intentioned but more
 than a little feckless.

In the past we've floated the idea of supporting a different cause
every year, but I feel strongly that it's much more advantageous to
try to build a working relationship that (one would hope) gets better
and stronger every year. I've been looking for an effort similar to
CureSearch to support but it's been difficult because I really wanted
to find something with international scope, given the international
nature of the PDML. About two weeks ago I found what I think is a good
candidate. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute here in Boston
(http://www.dana-farber.org/) is highly respected in the field and
their Jimmy Fund pediatric cancer clinic is one of the best around.
They are starting a new program to be called Pediatric Oncology
Global Outreach intended to expand and improve pediatric cancer
treatment worldwide, particularly in developing nations.

This Monday past I had a meeting at Dana-Farber with Dr. Carlos
Rodriguez-Galindo, the oncologist who's heading this program. He
described their plans and where they stand now. He's very interested
in getting our support because they're really just getting started -
we'd be getting in on the ground floor with this effort. That has some
disadvantages as far as name recognition, but I think that being under
the Dana-Farber umbrella will make up for that to a significant
 degree.

Another advantage is that this organization is headquartered here in
Boston, about two miles from my house. They won't be able to ignore
emails from me like CureSearch because they know I can be right there
in their faces at a moment's notice. The link with Dana-Farber also
gets instant cred around these parts, which I hope will be beneficial
when I start hitting the local media about the 2011 book in a few
 weeks.

 Any thoughts?

Yeah, he's really nearly four now, but he has an eagle eye (pun intended).
We
went to the dump the other day and he spied a toy truck sitting on a
concrete
pillar from about 40 feet away. He was in his car seat and there was
  another
car
between us and the truck. I don't know how he does it.

Anyway, I tried messing with the black point (in Aperture) and initially it
didn't make a whole lot of difference. I'm going to adjust it again prior to
printing and I'll see if I can improve upon it. Does it appear overly dark
on
your screen? Was wondering if I should adjust the exposure.

It was dark enough that it prompted me to look at the histogram - which when
adjusted gave a noticeable improvement. I adjusted both light point (RH side
of
histogram), Dark point (LH side of histogram) and the Mid point. The
adjustment
also made the snow look white. This was all done in Photoshop.

I think it may be time for more fiddling.

PESO - Red Shouldered Hawk

2011-02-17 Thread Brendan MacRae
So today I'm having lunch with my 3 year old when he starts pointing out the
widow and saying, Daddy, there's an owl! An owl! I asked him where he was
looking and there just over a neighbors' fence was a raptor in a tree not 25
feet from where we were sitting. I asked him to keep still and I slowly got up
and went to fetch the 400mm. Well, it was in the garage, and it's 30 degrees
out
and snowing. No matter.

I get the lens inside and realize that the temperature difference will fog the
lens so after getting it mounted on the tripod I go fetch a hair dryer and from
about 2 feet away on the low setting I defog the lens gently. Finally I can
line up the shot.

Unfortunately, I have to shoot through glass but I'll take it. You almost never
get to get this close to these birds. Not the sharpest image ever, but again,
I'll take it.

I just won an auction for a used (twice) Pentax Optio W60 at ebay.
www.dpreview.com has done a waterproof group test. The Optio W60 did pretty
well. Excellent image quality, but no image stabilizer.
I paid about 1/3 the price of a new W90, which doesn't do so well at dpreview.
I need the camera for sea kayaking trips. I just killed my old Lumix mega

it
instantly, even though it didn't realy get under the water, but my bag got wet
:-(

Does anyone here have experiences with the Optio W60?
 Thanks in advance :-)

 --

Jens,

I've had a W60 and used it to shoot probably 40,000+ images (52,000+ between my
W10 and W60 combined) over the last couple of years. I used it mostly to take
product shots for a client who sells vintage watches.

It's really a very good camera. The resolution is quite good, the lens is sharp
and focuses down to mm's and, of course, it's waterproof. I've taken mine into
a
pool down to about 12 feet without any trouble. I've even recorded underwater
video with it.

My only wish for the camera were for it to have settings that aren't burried in
menus but that was probably a design issue to make the camera easier to water
seal. I found the battery life to be pretty good and the batteries don't take
super long to charge.

As far as return on investment goes, it's by far the best camera I own :-)

You may want to try putting the background on a different layer then
desaturating the color a bit and addding some gaussian blur in Photoshop.

 Hi all,

Just wanted to post an image and get some quick advice on it.  It's one of my
favorites of all that I've taken, but there's something about it that almost
ruins the shot for me:  the bokeh.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4894043325/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4894043325/lightbox/
/

ISO 320, 1/1000 sec., f/5.6, Pentax DAL 50-200mm (kit lens), in shutter
priority mode.

Is there any software that I can use to improve the bokeh on this image?  Or
any Photoshop techniques or plug-ins anyone can recommend?  Or maybe even
free/cheap stand-alone apps that might make it look a little better?

Also, any shooting techniques to avoid the ugly bokeh in the future would be
appreciated.  I've got other lenses that produce much nicer bokeh than that,
but
I'd like to be able to use this one without a sense of dread in the future.

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me.

 Best,

 Walt

Shooting with this camera, for me, is quite different than the K20.  My
 rhythm
is off--I'm behind, and the K7 is ahead of me.  I've been working on keeping
up.  :-)  One factor involved here is the K7's sounds are different--lens
focusing and shutter etc--I can barely hear anything, which is good, but it's
thrown me off a bit.  Funny how you get used to the sounds of a camera.  That
horizon level is amazing. I certainly do A LOT less crop adjustments.  I
didn't
use the creative filter options on the K20, but I'm having fun with the K7's
filters--pretty fun, in my view.  Love the fish-eye, watercolor, and toy
camera
filters: http://www.caguila.com/caguila/k7play

The view finder is great, and it's easier to see through.  I'm not shooting
with the battery grip because I haven't purchased it.  A part of me would like
the vertical buttons, but I have to say, it's been so much fun shooting with a
really light camera.  That K20 is a tank, especially with battery grip.

Moving through a crowd with the K7 is fun.  It's so quiet.  I can get closer,
and I'm quieter.  Of course, if you get noticed, you get noticed, but if you
don't and take a picture folks aren't going to hear much.  I worry a lot less
about exposure due to the K7's improved exposure accuracy, and find I'm not
chimping  as much--though I do some--but still this is quite liberating.
Post-processing seems quicker--less cropping adjustments et al.

If the rumor is true that a K5 is coming, it's going to be really interesting
to see what the improvements are.

So, I think I'll keep K7.  I know I'm singing to the choir here, but I just
wanted to get my say in :-).
 http://www.caguila.com/caguila/korean2010

More testing and play here.  Comments welcome.  Cheers, Christine
P.S.  I know there are two color pictures in this black and white gallery,
 but
I just couldn't get rid of the playful purple.  :-)

Your gallery is a good advert for the k-7, Christine.

No. 14 with the three girls is a real stand out.

flash makes it look somewhat artificial.

I hear ya. But while I did tone it down some, I left enough of the fill in so
that it was obvious that fill flash was used. Why? Well, simply because any
photographer seeing the shot will realize the technique and any non-photog will
just think it's a well exposed image. So, while I see your point, my taste
tends
to lean more toward being OK with backlit scenes where fill sometimes

The mounting the tube seems also an original.

Are you sure about
 that?  Compare the pictures at
 AOHC:

http://www.aohc.it/cameras/nocta.jpg
and,
http://www.aohc.it/images/sp40.jpg

to
 the picture at the
 auction:

http://i.ebayimg.com/11/!Bw0VCdQBGk~$(KGrHqIOKioEwPgB+i)hBMKt40,WIw~~_12.JPG

You
can see that the historic pictures show a much shorter tube
between the wide
part of the lens and the body of the image
intensifier, with no obvious
tapering or visible bright metal.  The
ebay lens doesn't have any place
where an image intensifier could be
placed according to the old
 pictures.

regards, Anthony

The Nocta is described pretty well in Oosten's The Ultimate Asahi Pentax Screw
Mount Guide 1952-1977, pgs 255-256. From the three pictures in this book, it
appears as though the eBay lens is complete minus the larger focusing handle. A
rare unit indeed.

The description of lens from the book:

The lens is a highly specialized Takumar 1:3.3/300mm for Infrared photography.
The minimum aperture is f/22, the angle of view is 8 degrees. It was supplied
with a 256X Neutral Density filter (42mm) for use under daylight conditions.
The actual front of the lens measures 300/3.3 = 91mm in diameter of which only
the central part is used in daylight. - pg 255.

Quite a Life

2010-06-29 Thread Brendan MacRae
After work today, I went over to spend some time with Will Connell, Jr. who had
asked me over to take a look at the wiring on his stereo system. Will is a
great artist who creates incredible wooden sculptures. His stereo cabinet and
speakers were built by him in the 1960's.

After sorting out the wiring he invited me to take a look at a number of
original prints made by his father, the old man, as Will always refers to
him. I was completely blown away.

The photographs from his Hollywood years when he worked as a studio portratist
were just amazing. Original studio glamor shots of Ginger Rogers, Myrna Loy,
Mary Brian, Irene Dunne, Charles Laughton, Errol Flynn and others. One was a
color photo of a young Mickey Rooney as a promo for Out West With The Hardy's
from 1938. Absolutely amazing images. Some of his Hollywood work is here:

http://www.cmp.ucr.edu/collections/permanent/object_genres/photographers/connell/connell_archive/wc_groEN.html

I also got to see some of his other pictorial work, commercial photography, and
photos and portraits of family friends. Some of these were notable figures
including Lloyd Wright who remodeled Connell's home and back porch in Los
Angeles. The best part of all though was leafing through the original mock-up
that Connell did for his famous book In Pictures: A Hollywood Satire which he
used as he was shopping around for a publisher. Seeing as how first editions of
the book go for thousands of dollars
(http://www.abaa.org/books/256477872.html), I'm sure that the mock-up is worth
a pretty penny indeed.

It was a real treat to be able to see all of these original prints and hear the
stories that Will tells of the old man and his incredible photographic life.

I am a photographer because for me photography is the most satisfactory way of
talking to people. It's commercial photography because I also like to eat. -

As most of you know, I am soon to celebrate one year since I got laid off
 from
my less-than-lucrative but still gainful employment. Returning to school has
been fun, and I've shot a few gigs here and there, but the blow to my income
 has
 been catastrophic.

I could type for a while on this subject, but I'll
skip that and just say that the PDML account is pretty much toast. My K20 is
going on ebay sometime this weekend to get some more operating funds for a
while, but I'm running out of things to sell and still stay in the photo
 game.

Understand how sad and awkward this is for me; I've considered my
underwriting the PDML my main contribution to the community, and a point of
pride. Those of you who have met me know that neither pride nor dignity play
 a
big part in my life, so you can imagine how important that particular point
 is.

I've considered a number of scenarios, from a community print sale to
raise funds, to just handing it over to someone who can afford to keep it
 going,
to joining the 21st century and going to a web-based thing, but that would
 still
have to take into consideration the bandwidth costs, which are the bulk of
 the
 out-go.

I love The List, though, and I want to remain somewhat relevant.
So I'm going to add, assuming I get permission from our hosting company, a
paypal donate button to the href=http://pdml.net;pdml.net home page. This
way I can avoid a straight
out begging posture but still give you all the opportunity to take part in
 the
continued life of this, the premier Pentax-related source on the Net.

If
any of you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me or just throw
something out for everyone to discuss.

Thank you,

Highlight

She's playing a Sears Silvertone guitar made by Danelectro in the 60's. It was
one of the worst electric guitars ever made. Would never tune, probably even
when brand new. The body is made of masonite and had an 18 fret short scale
neck. They were sold out of the Sear catalog along with a case that had a small
tube amp built into it and all for $67 and change!

Lots of famous folks play them mostly for their shabby-chic quality. You can
get some nice tone out of them with the Danelectro Lipstick Pickup but after
playing a couple of these (and owning one in the late 80's) I can tell you
they're truly awful.

2010-05-01 Thread Brendan MacRae
The photo annual came today. I had a great time going through it. Y'all are
better photographers than me. I wish that were more of a compliment.

The other thing that came with my annual, in the same package, was a small mini
album that someone was sending to their Nonna from the Wal*Mart photo center
in a separate envelope. I opened it thinking it was for me, and thusly
committed a federal offense! How weird is that?

So, other than having to play Post Office now and making sure ol' Nonna gets
the pictures of her grandkids, I throughly enjoyed seeing the book. I would say
good on all of you for a terrific collection of images.

You should all be very proud.

This was taken at a local lake.  Even though we were shooting at
early
evening, the lighting was too harsh to record the entire scene
well.
Some of you may be aware that the K-x has a built in HDR
function whereby it
takes 3 shots to bracket exposure and then merges
them together.  So
this shot here was taken that way.  I held it
still on a rock for the
exposures.  If anyone is interested, I did
take another shot without HDR

I'll offer mine the nebulous term by saying that if at least some surface
 areas
are rendered featureless by virtue of being too bright, I'd consider those
 areas
blown out. Many images can tolerate a certain amount of this condition, but
it's amount is the criteria and varies with each viewer. Said areas must, of
course, contain some available mask detail which defines the surface.
IOW,
I'm not talking about an absolute ball of glare wherein no detail is
 discernible.

Jack

Here's Ansel's take on it from Eaxmples - The Making Of Forty Photographs:

The picture haunts me. I have not yet made the print I desire. The tonal
qualities of the woman's face please me, but I am not able to print through the
blank sunlit area of her shoulder without getting a flat, textureless value,
since the film is severely blocked in that area.

Everyone has struggled with blown out areas of photographs. Ansel decided to
include this photograph even though it wasn't technically perfect. For me,
blown out areas can often add rather than subtract from the asthetics of an
image. It just depends on where they occur within the image and to what degree
they land outside of the overall tonality. In the image of the old woman on the
porch he describes above (Martha Porter, Pioneer Woman), I hadn't really
noticed the blown out area until he mentioned in the text.

I think you meant to say doesn't support an eSATA connection. But I don't see
why this is a factor since USB 3.0 is supposed to be faster than eSATA anyway.

Theoretically, but there's little to be
 gained using an interface
that's faster than the drive interface. My unit
 provides eSATA,
Firewire and USB 2, I wouldn't purposefully buy anything
 that's USB 3

That's a good point, Rob. Of course, the solid state drives are supposed to be
much faster that traditional HD's which is where things seemed to be headed.

It seems that I've got a weak spot for fast primes.

I've been talking to
sonpix about his Pentax 400/5.6 and I'm curious how it would compare to my
 bigma?

It's a little faster at that length, and a little shorter, but how
does it compare in size, sharpness, aberration and bokeh?

Larry,

I have the A400mm f5.6. I don't think it translates well on digital, at least
so far (this might be reduced on a FF sensor or one with a smaller crop factor
than 1.5). I have used it on both the K10D and K20D and there's just too much
fringing for my taste. I compared the big Pentax-M 67 400mm f4 IF ED lens on
these bodies, as well, thinking that the ED glass might make a difference in
the fringing but I didn't see one (though I may have been introducing other
issues since that lens was designed for the 67 system). But, since I was
thinking of getting the FA 400mm f5.6 which also has ED glass I thought I
should try it.

You may be better off looking into the long DA primes. They've been designed
with the smaller sensor in mind.

Slightly OT - eSATA solution for Mac Pro users

2010-03-13 Thread Brendan MacRae
I have been running out room on my Mac Pro and needed to get an external drive.
I have one Aperture library that is nearly 500GB in size. I wanted a
off-the-shelf Mac drive that was inexpensive that would have fast throughput.
USB 2.0 and Firewire just aren't fast enough. So, I initially got an eSATA PCIe
card for my Mac that allows SATA connections with external drives.
Unfortunately, either the card, the driver, or both didn't provide the 3Gb/sec
speed I require. In fact, the transfer speeds were running at slower than USB
speeds so it turned out to be worthless to me. Luckily I found a solution:

http://www.newertech.com/products/esata_cable.php

Not bad and it costs $19 plus shipping.

Since, it turns out, the Mac Pro's made between 2006 and 2008 have two add'l
SATA ports on the motherboards you can install this kit and get two eSATA
connections on the back of your machine. What's really nice is that since
you're plugging into native ports on the motherboard (vs. going through a
card), the Mac just treats the drive just like internal storage, no drivers
needed. The downside, for some, is that you have to basically take your machine
apart to get to the ports. It requires removing the ram risers, all installed
cards, all hard drives, the processor cover, and the front fan assembly. Sounds
like an incredible pain, but really is quite simple as Mac Pros are designed to
be reconfigured easily.

I'm running a super cheap ($159) WD My Book 1.5T drive via the eSATA connection
and I can now run my largest Aperture library from this drive just as if it
were an internal drive. You do need to turn the drive on before start up,
however, but the drive then turns off on its own when the system shuts down.

This will do until USB 3.0 becomes affordable.

Re: 645D Exists (Or Will Soon)

2010-03-09 Thread Brendan MacRae
I'm wondering what the files sizes are that come out of this thing? They must
be huge. Even if you have some 645 lenses hanging about AND you can afford this
camera, you'll most likely need to upgrade your storage just to save all of
your keepers. Not to mention upping the ram to handle rendering and image
processing. I wonder if the hidden costs of this camera system might be a big
ouchie.

Eat or buy ink and paper for all of the 30 x 40 posters you'll be making?

We could all stand to lose a few pounds ...right?
