Hello all, been a while …
Hi Gang, It's been years. But just today I saw a name on a Hagerty Auto article, "Paul Stenquist," and I stopped in my tracks and thought, "I know that name!". https://tinyurl.com/4dexsnzu Good work, Paul. I enjoyed that thoroughly. Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves on the list. I myself haven't been shooting much at all. I no longer do any commercial photography but I'm still a "serial appreciator" of photography in general even if other things have muscled it to the sidelines these days. Some may remember me selling a venerable Pentax-A* 85mm f1.4 for a 1967 Austin-Healey Sprite a long time ago. Well, it's almost finished...it's only been 12 years... OT: Fixing a failed Hard Drive
Well, I thought I'd post this here in case anyone needs to know one way to fix a dead hard drive. We had a hellacious thunderstorm come through a couple of weeks ago and with it the requisite amount of earth shaking thunder and lightning. I had my Dell desktop PC on at the time and we had a power spike followed by a brief black out. When the power came back on the computer appeared just fine (it is plugged into a surge protector which did not trip). A couple of days later after a few start ups I heard the clicking sound of death from my primary HD. It still managed to boot and the clicking went away so I ran a defrag and disk clean and it appeared that the drive was working perfectly. Two boots later, nothing. Clicking returned and BIOS wouldn't recognize the drive. Since this drive is partly backed up and doesn't contain anything mission critical I decided I would attempt to fix it myself. After searching the net for all kinds of advice (including some really bad ideas about heating and freezing the drive) I opted to swap the PCB board from a like drive and give that a go. $17 drive off eBay arrived and I swapped boards. Clicking stopped, drive spun, but unfortunately it still wasn't recognized in the BIOS. Bummer. I got a low-cost external drive enclosure so that I could more easily test the unit on another Dell laptop. And after many fruitless and frustrating attempts to get the computer to see the hard drive I finally found a site that explained that the 8-pin ROM chip from the failed drive's PCB needs to be swapped to the good donor board on some drives. Ok, this isn't the easiest thing to do correctly by a shade tree mechanic like me, but I gave it a go. You cannot use a soldering iron, you have to heat the chip contacts with a heat gun and remove the chip with tweezers. It's not easy and my first attempt failed to secure the contacts on one side of the chip. Luckily, and miraculously, a second attempt with the heat gun (modified with a snout made from aluminum foil making a narrow tip) secured the contacts when I applied light pressure to the top of the chip. Drive came back to life on next attempt to connect via USB. Proceeded to quickly copy any and all needed files. After all this, the rest of the weekend is pure gravy. note to self: back up ALL of your drives, dummy Figured I'd post this since there are innumerable sites referencing the control board swap but few mention the ROM swap needed for some drives. For reference this is an 3.5 IDE 160GB WD Caviar from about 2006. -Brendan -- Photography's greatest handicap is the ease with which the medium as such can be learned. -Brendan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Photography's greatest handicap is the ease with which the medium as such can be learned. K-5IIs First Impressions
First new Pentax I've had since the K-20D arrived yesterday. Here are the the things I liked immediately: - Locking Mode Dial - ISO/compensation buttons and location - LCD -100% Finder - Overall build quality - low-light focusing is a big improvement - price from Adorama was 995 with a $100 gift card (card was put toward battery grip) Things I didn't like: - not sure if I want the fn button back or not - a movie button would be nice but having it on the mode dial is fine - the SD card door on the K-20 feels more solid than on the K-5IIs - focus point select and four-way get in each others way I probably say this about every Pentax and I know it cuts across the grain as far as their design principle goes but it's too small for me. I bought the battery grip like I did with the K-10/20 so there's more to hold and makes it bit heavier which I like in a camera. I shot some video today and was really pleased at the results. I will put it up on the HD monitor tomorrow and see what it looks like there. Overall, I'm not disappointed. The slow low-light focusing of the K-20D was a big issue for me, the new focusing system is much improved. The new LCD is very sharp and I like the layout of the menus - easy to navigate as always (I recently had the misfortune of trying to navigate the menu on a ND7100 - and no joke, it was a nightmare). I'll really try to give it a workout over the weekend and maybe even post a picture or two. -Brendan -- Photography's greatest handicap is the ease with which the medium as such can be learned. Hi Godfrey, I'm just confused since I see that Apple updated its camera raw compatibility under Lion (update 4.04) for the K-5II. I like the fact that OSX handles DNG across the entire operating system (like hitting the spacebar to preview images, including DNG files). Is the DNG from the newer bodies still compatible with 10.6.8 this way? Has the DNG format changed in the new bodies? Since I've been using Aperture 2 for RAW processing (and can't upgrade) I'm hoping for backward compatibility. -Brendan Photography's greatest handicap is the ease with which the medium as such can be learned. Not exactly sure what you mean. The operating system version isn't generally relevant to image file formats. The DNG format has been supported on OS X since Adobe released the version of Camera Raw that processed it around 2004. You wouldn't need a new computer. You'd need appropriate software that handles the format. DNG is particularly versatile as even the latest cameras producing DNG format files can be processed by software written some time ago, in most cases. Can you articulate a little more specifically what potential incompatibility you are thinking about? Re: Sold the 85mm f1.4 for this?
Wow! Awesome, shots. What a coup to have one with DH. This car is a bucket list item for me as I've wanted to restore a car for years and years but have never had the time, the room, or the resources to do so. I've been working for the last few years at Mini Mania just up the road in Nevada City, CA where I handle their overseas buying. As such, I can get parts for a considerable discount. Here's a before and after of the 1275cc: http://primelensphotography.com/engine.jpg The engine had a blown head gasket, a hole in the no.2 piston, and the head was cracked. It was rebuilt sometime in the past, but not done properly. When I got it it was .030 over but now it's .060 over making it a 1330cc with (roughly) 10:1 compression. The head is a modified iron 12G940 but now has hardened seats, larger valves, and is ported and polished. I fitted a street cam, lightened timing gears, the crank/flywheel are balanced and I had the dual SU's rebuilt by Ed D'Arata in my office. It has electronic distributor and I have a LCB header for it. Sticking with the stock 4-speed for now...that was completely rebuilt, too. Should make it go pretty well. It ran beautifully on our test stand :-) Photography's greatest handicap is the ease with which the medium as such can be learned. My S.O. had judged it the best one yet, both in terms of book design and the photography it contains. High praise indeed. There are very few image tweaks to be made and a couple of typos that slipped through the gauntlet. I should hear in the next day or so about the Pediatric Oncology Global Outreach official status with Dana-Farber and I'll make the necessary additions/changes to the copy in the book. We'll be good to go at that point. Monday? Tuesday? I want to get in under the wire for the Blurb sale price thing. I'd like to send out a few copies of the book for promotional purposes - to a couple web sites and print publications, some people at Pentax who've helped and to a couple of the physicians and scientists who are working on the project. My current part-time faculty position leaves me in no financial position to pay for this on my own as I have in previous years, so if any PDMLers are in a position to kick in a couple of dollars I've set up a donations page at http://www.robertstech.com/pdmlbook/donate.htm to help defray the cost of producing and promoting the PDML Photo Annual. Hi Ken, Yeah, he's really nearly four now, but he has an eagle eye (pun intended). We went to the dump the other day and he spied a toy truck sitting on a concrete pillar from about 40 feet away. He was in his car seat and there was another car between us and the truck. I don't know how he does it. Anyway, I tried messing with the black point (in Aperture) and initially it didn't make a whole lot of difference. I'm going to adjust it again prior to printing and I'll see if I can improve upon it. Does it appear overly dark on your screen? Re: Photo Annual 2011 - your thoughts
Sounds good, Mark. -Brendan - Original Message From: Mark Roberts m...@robertstech.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Fri, February 18, 2011 9:04:21 AM Subject: Photo Annual 2011 - your thoughts Work continues apace on the 2011 book (and I'm bracing myself for the inevitable last-week rush of submissions soon to come). What I'd like to get input on at the moment is the notion of changing the charity the book supports. We've had many problems with CureSearch in the past two years but the straw that broke the camel's back as far as I'm concerned is the way they totally dropped the ball regarding the exhibit in Chicago. They'd said they would do a mailing to their major donors in Chicage and alert them to the opening, etc. And they completely failed to follow through on any of it. I know a lot of oncologists and pathologists who are familiar with NCCF/CureSearch and whenever I mention the organization I get the same reaction: a sigh and a rubbing of the temples as if an old, familiar headache is coming back. CureSearch's is widely regarded as well-intentioned but more than a little feckless. In the past we've floated the idea of supporting a different cause every year, but I feel strongly that it's much more advantageous to try to build a working relationship that (one would hope) gets better and stronger every year. I've been looking for an effort similar to CureSearch to support but it's been difficult because I really wanted to find something with international scope, given the international nature of the PDML. About two weeks ago I found what I think is a good candidate. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute here in Boston (http://www.dana-farber.org/) is highly respected in the field and their Jimmy Fund pediatric cancer clinic is one of the best around. They are starting a new program to be called Pediatric Oncology Global Outreach intended to expand and improve pediatric cancer treatment worldwide, particularly in developing nations. This Monday past I had a meeting at Dana-Farber with Dr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, the oncologist who's heading this program. He described their plans and where they stand now. He's very interested in getting our support because they're really just getting started - we'd be getting in on the ground floor with this effort. That has some disadvantages as far as name recognition, but I think that being under the Dana-Farber umbrella will make up for that to a significant degree. Another advantage is that this organization is headquartered here in Boston, about two miles from my house. They won't be able to ignore emails from me like CureSearch because they know I can be right there in their faces at a moment's notice. The link with Dana-Farber also gets instant cred around these parts, which I hope will be beneficial when I start hitting the local media about the 2011 book in a few weeks. Thanks in advance :-) Regards Jens -- Jens, I've had a W60 and used it to shoot probably 40,000+ images (52,000+ between my W10 and W60 combined) over the last couple of years. I used it mostly to take product shots for a client who sells vintage watches. It's really a very good camera. The resolution is quite good, the lens is sharp and focuses down to mm's and, of course, it's waterproof. I've taken mine into a pool down to about 12 feet without any trouble. I've even recorded underwater video with it. My only wish for the camera were for it to have settings that aren't burried in menus but that was probably a design issue to make the camera easier to water seal. I found the battery life to be pretty good and the batteries don't take super long to charge. Is there any software that I can use to improve the bokeh on this image? Or any Photoshop techniques or plug-ins anyone can recommend? Or maybe even free/cheap stand-alone apps that might make it look a little better? Also, any shooting techniques to avoid the ugly bokeh in the future would be appreciated. I've got other lenses that produce much nicer bokeh than that, but I'd like to be able to use this one without a sense of dread in the future. Thanks for any advice anyone can give me. - Original Message From: Christine Aguila cagu...@earthlink.net To: pdml@pdml.net Sent: Sun, August 15, 2010 11:06:06 AM Subject: I think I'll keep the k7 :-) Shooting with this camera, for me, is quite different than the K20. My rhythm is off--I'm behind, and the K7 is ahead of me. I've been working on keeping up. :-) One factor involved here is the K7's sounds are different--lens focusing and shutter etc--I can barely hear anything, which is good, but it's thrown me off a bit. Funny how you get used to the sounds of a camera. That horizon level is amazing. I certainly do A LOT less crop adjustments. I didn't use the creative filter options on the K20, but I'm having fun with the K7's filters--pretty fun, in my view. Love the fish-eye, watercolor, and toy camera filters: http://www.caguila.com/caguila/k7play The view finder is great, and it's easier to see through. I'm not shooting with the battery grip because I haven't purchased it. A part of me would like the vertical buttons, but I have to say, it's been so much fun shooting with a really light camera. That K20 is a tank, especially with battery grip. Moving through a crowd with the K7 is fun. It's so quiet. I can get closer, and I'm quieter. Of course, if you get noticed, you get noticed, but if you don't and take a picture folks aren't going to hear much. I worry a lot less about exposure due to the K7's improved exposure accuracy, and find I'm not chimping as much--though I do some--but still this is quite liberating. Post-processing seems quicker--less cropping adjustments et al. If the rumor is true that a K5 is coming, it's going to be really interesting to see what the improvements are. So, I think I'll keep K7. I know I'm singing to the choir here, but I just wanted to get my say in :-). http://www.caguila.com/caguila/korean2010 More testing and play here. Comments welcome. Cheers, Christine P.S. I know there are two color pictures in this black and white gallery, but I just couldn't get rid of the playful purple. :-) Your gallery is a good advert for the k-7, Christine. But while I did tone it down some, I left enough of the fill in so that it was obvious that fill flash was used. Why? Well, simply because any photographer seeing the shot will realize the technique and any non-photog will just think it's a well exposed image. So, while I see your point, my taste tends to lean more toward being OK with backlit scenes where fill sometimes predominates. -Brendan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Quite a Life
After work today, I went over to spend some time with Will Connell, Jr. who had asked me over to take a look at the wiring on his stereo system. Will is a great artist who creates incredible wooden sculptures. His stereo cabinet and speakers were built by him in the 1960's. After sorting out the wiring he invited me to take a look at a number of original prints made by his father, the old man, as Will always refers to him. I was completely blown away. The photographs from his Hollywood years when he worked as a studio portratist were just amazing. Original studio glamor shots of Ginger Rogers, Myrna Loy, Mary Brian, Irene Dunne, Charles Laughton, Errol Flynn and others. One was a color photo of a young Mickey Rooney as a promo for Out West With The Hardy's from 1938. Absolutely amazing images. Some of his Hollywood work is here: http://www.cmp.ucr.edu/collections/permanent/object_genres/photographers/connell/connell_archive/wc_groEN.html I also got to see some of his other pictorial work, commercial photography, and photos and portraits of family friends. Some of these were notable figures including Lloyd Wright who remodeled Connell's home and back porch in Los Angeles. The best part of all though was leafing through the original mock-up that Connell did for his famous book In Pictures: A Hollywood Satire which he used as he was shopping around for a publisher. Seeing as how first editions of the book go for thousands of dollars (http://www.abaa.org/books/256477872.html), I'm sure that the mock-up is worth a pretty penny indeed. It was a real treat to be able to see all of these original prints and hear the stories that Will tells of the old man and his incredible photographic life. -Brendan I am a photographer because for me photography is the most satisfactory way of talking to people. Those of you who have met me know that neither pride nor dignity play a big part in my life, so you can imagine how important that particular point is. I've considered a number of scenarios, from a community print sale to raise funds, to just handing it over to someone who can afford to keep it going, to joining the 21st century and going to a web-based thing, but that would still have to take into consideration the bandwidth costs, which are the bulk of the out-go. The photo annual came today. I had a great time going through it. Y'all are better photographers than me. I wish that were more of a compliment. - Original Message From: Jack Davis jdavi...@yahoo.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Mon, April 5, 2010 10:27:45 AM Subject: Define blown out :-) I'll offer mine the nebulous term by saying that if at least some surface areas are rendered featureless by virtue of being too bright, I'd consider those areas blown out. Many images can tolerate a certain amount of this condition, but it's amount is the criteria and varies with each viewer. Said areas must, of course, contain some available mask detail which defines the surface. IOW, I'm not talking about an absolute ball of glare wherein no detail is discernible. Jack Here's Ansel's take on it from Eaxmples - The Making Of Forty Photographs: The picture haunts me. I have not yet made the print I desire. The tonal qualities of the woman's face please me, but I am not able to print through the blank sunlit area of her shoulder without getting a flat, textureless value, since the film is severely blocked in that area. Everyone has struggled with blown out areas of photographs. Ansel decided to include this photograph even though it wasn't technically perfect. For me, blown out areas can often add rather than subtract from the asthetics of an image. It just depends on where they occur within the image and to what degree they land outside of the overall tonality. In the image of the old woman on the porch he describes above (Martha Porter, Pioneer Woman), I hadn't really noticed the blown out area until he mentioned in the text. -Brendan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It seems that I've got a weak spot for fast primes. I've been talking to sonpix about his Pentax 400/5.6 and I'm curious how it would compare to my bigma? It's a little faster at that length, and a little shorter, but how does it compare in size, sharpness, aberration and bokeh? Larry, I have the A400mm f5.6. I don't think it translates well on digital, at least so far (this might be reduced on a FF sensor or one with a smaller crop factor than 1.5). I have used it on both the K10D and K20D and there's just too much fringing for my taste. I compared the big Pentax-M 67 400mm f4 IF ED lens on these bodies, as well, thinking that the ED glass might make a difference in the fringing but I didn't see one (though I may have been introducing other issues since that lens was designed for the 67 system). But, since I was thinking of getting the FA 400mm f5.6 which also has ED glass I thought I should try it. You may be better off looking into the long DA primes. They've been designed with the smaller sensor in mind. -Brendan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Slightly OT - eSATA solution for Mac Pro users
I have been running out room on my Mac Pro and needed to get an external drive. I have one Aperture library that is nearly 500GB in size. I wanted a off-the-shelf Mac drive that was inexpensive that would have fast throughput. USB 2.0 and Firewire just aren't fast enough. So, I initially got an eSATA PCIe card for my Mac that allows SATA connections with external drives. Unfortunately, either the card, the driver, or both didn't provide the 3Gb/sec speed I require. In fact, the transfer speeds were running at slower than USB speeds so it turned out to be worthless to me. Luckily I found a solution: http://www.newertech.com/products/esata_cable.php Not bad and it costs $19 plus shipping. Since, it turns out, the Mac Pro's made between 2006 and 2008 have two add'l SATA ports on the motherboards you can install this kit and get two eSATA connections on the back of your machine. What's really nice is that since you're plugging into native ports on the motherboard (vs. going through a card), the Mac just treats the drive just like internal storage, no drivers needed. The downside, for some, is that you have to basically take your machine apart to get to the ports. It requires removing the ram risers, all installed cards, all hard drives, the processor cover, and the front fan assembly. Sounds like an incredible pain, but really is quite simple as Mac Pros are designed to be reconfigured easily. I'm running a super cheap ($159) WD My Book 1.5T drive via the eSATA connection and I can now run my largest Aperture library from this drive just as if it were an internal drive. You do need to turn the drive on before start up, however, but the drive then turns off on its own when the system shuts down. This will do until USB 3.0 becomes affordable. -Brendan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: 645D Exists (Or Will Soon)
I'm wondering what the files sizes are that come out of this thing? They must be huge. Even if you have some 645 lenses hanging about AND you can afford this camera, you'll most likely need to upgrade your storage just to save all of your keepers. Not to mention upping the ram to handle rendering and image processing. I wonder if the hidden costs of this camera system might be a big ouchie. Eat or buy ink and paper for all of the 30 x 40 posters you'll be making?
