Unsubscribe quick. These guys talk about tea/coffee, beer, bicycles,
motorcycles, and cars. And they crack bad puns all the time. (Unless things
have
changed.)

Oh, occasionally, in between these topics and the standard gear talk, they
MAY talk about photography, but I wouldn't count on it.

It's acted fine with my eactivist aol account before. It is what I used
for years with PDML.

It may have something to do with the fact I haven't used that email
account, period, for years. Maybe AOL isn't used to it anymore. ;-) Anyway, I
would tend to blame AOL first, before I look for other problems.

It may be something like what I get when I post from my Yahoo account.
For some reason, Yahoo doesn't send it back so that I can see if it made
it through to the list, soI don't see the post coming back from the
server.

Fortunately, I have this other account that does receive those posts.

Re: 20th Anniversary PUG is Up!

2017-04-03 Thread Eactivist
My mail does not seem to be showing up on the list, despite my initial
test, but after my flip comment to Ann I decided to add this.

I liked Shel. I like characters, and Shel was a definite character. He was
also a d fine photographer. On the whole, I enjoyed him. Until our
last photo outing together when his grumpiness outweighed his enjoyment in
doing photography that particular day (his legs were bothering him).

It didn't hurt that he unabashedly liked my photos. Called them painterly.

So the PUG picture is a tickle in the ribs to Shel (re portraits), and a
remembrance. I don't know if he is still alive. Last I heard, quite sometime
ago, he had a physical problem with his legs, had given up photography
again, and was becoming a "foodie." (I do not remember the physical problem,
but it was not unserious.)

His leg problem is why in later years he mainly took pictures inside: a
chair, a dish of soap, etc. (still good pictures). But before that, and in
earlier years he had been a very good street photographer.

So I asked him to go to SF with me one time show me how he did street
photography. One of our earlier trips (I think we got together, the two of us,
3-4 times).

There was a flower vendor. An obvious shot, a person surrounded by all
those colorful flowers. So he went up and started talking to her. (He may have
first asked if he could take her picture, and she said no. I don't
remember.) He talks to her more and is taking her picture all the time, with
the
camera at his waist (he did not need to look through the viewfinder. I think
a few others on this list could/can do that too). Finally, she says,
"You're not taking my picture are you?" And he said something like, "No, I
wouldn't do that." All the time taking her picture.

As we walked away, I said something like, "That seems a bit underhanded."
(or sneaky or whatever I said). And he said, "That's how you do street
photography."

Well, it makes a good story anyway, and it pretty much went just like that
(as far as I can recall).

He recommended talking to people to establish a connection with them, to
relax them, and sometimes they might consent to a photograph, and sometimes
they might not.

Marnie (aka Doe) :-)

I love this camera! I am amazed at the quality of these files. The

It isn't many yet, and you can't really see the sharpness on a web

Can't wait to see where Ricoh takes Pentax DSLRs in the future. This

You mean the X-E2? There is an X-M1 (not X-M2) but it doesn't have a

The guts of the X-E2 and X-T1 are very similar: Same sensor and image
processing engine, and probably same AF algorithms (at least once they
release new firmware for the X-E2). The EVF on the X-T1 is larger and
has a faster refresh rate than that of the X-E2, but I own the X-E2
and think it has a very nice EVF, so it's not like you'd be slumming.

As far as external controls go, the X-E2 lacks an ISO wheel, and Drive
and Meter Mode levers. It also has fewer customisable buttons, but
that could change with a firmware upgrade, which Fuji seem fond of.

Lastly, the X-E2 is $300 cheaper than the X-T1.

I'm interested in the X-T1 because it's going to handle larger lenses
better and, most importantly, because it has a flip-screen, which the
X-E2 doesn't. A slightly larger EVF will be a nice bonus, but is not a
 deciding factor for me.

Are you interested in a gently used X-E2? ;-)

Looks good. Yeah, I haven't figured out how to do HDR yet. (IE I suppose

suppose.)

Joe's is a bar in downtown Boulder Creek. Getting the exposure right with

I ended up doing a long exposure, catching it for a short time with the
neon lit, then subsequently covering the lense when the neon was lit
and only exposing when the neon wasn't lit, to keep the highlights from
blowing out.

I suppose that if I weren't so lazy, I would have just done it using HDR.

The only problem I had was dust. That's a problem with all scanners, I

solved a lot of the problems. Software can solve a lot of the rest. It came

Now, please excuse me if I were to spoil your finding by telling that
there are other (very few though) Denny's restaurants that feature

http://www.yelp.com/biz/dennys-everett-3 (Evertt, WA)
http://www.yelp.com/biz/dennys-bellevue-2 (Bellevue, WA)

From what I can tell most of them [all?] are in the Western States,
not in the puritan South or even East.

However, - the one you found is unique in a different way:
it has a wedding chapel! (only in Vegas!) :-)
.. and it is a very new one, - just over 1 year old:

The photo itself is most certainly real. Even if it has been manipulated

It's fidelity to the photographed subject/event that's at issue.

I did a lot of experimenting with long exposures and/or multiple

without HDR processes. I'm trying to work time into my photographs
rather than capture a decisive moment like HCB.

This first shot was one that I planned for and which turned out even
better than I'd hoped. I set up in a tube station with the intention
of combining multiple show-shutter-speed shots of the people on the
platform with a train coming into the station. Lacking a tripod, I
braced the camera on something solid (I forget exactly what), zone
focused and waited for people to walk in front of the camera and for a
train to arrive. Unusually and unfortunately there were few people
coming through the station at that time but I did get two shots that I
thought would work well together. I combined both images in Photoshop,
converted to BW (which took a lot of fiddling with the color sliders
to get looking just right) and added some noise. Here's the result:
