OT building an astro tracker

2024-02-10 Thread Toine
Something to keep me busy:
https://www.repiuk.nl/blog/3D-Things/#pid=20240210_124911.jpg
It has GoTo and tracking. Current stepping motors are very cheap models. If
it all works I plan to mount real steppers and the DA300 which should
produce razor sharp starfields.

Re: OT: Lightroom naming help

2023-12-08 Thread Toine
Yes Lightroom Classic (LrC) is what you want. Lightroom (Lr) needs a real
cloud subscription (1 Tb), It also works with Lightroom Mobile. And all 3
can work together in the cloud.
Lightroom Classic is the one, the rest is nice (and expensive)

Raynox msn 505.
Yes I will mount it on my pentax macro. Step down ring is on its way from
china.. Maybe in time for the next pug. My pentax gear is collecting
dust...

Found it at a local flee market. Had to google to find the modelnumber.
Apparently an expensive raynox, 4 lens elements in 3 groups. I dont see the
usual out of focus CA.

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction

2023-05-08 Thread Toine
If you like to use denoise and hate the long wait:
Upgraded from a gtx 1050ti to a rtx 3060 12gb. It took 4-5 min and now 4
sec. LRc estimate was 12min vs 9 sec. I'm planning to crank up the ISO for
birding. Even nightjars should be easy.
I got the 3060 because it runs very cool and quiet (the fans stay at 0 rpm
during the 4 sec peak), probably because its a pimped notebook chip.

The best (virtual) lens/camera upgrade in years!

GESO some birds and LR DeNoise AI

2023-04-30 Thread Toine
Two birds shot with the Nikon Coolpix P950 (first one) and Lumix G9 / Leica
100-400.
You need to click on the zoom button to see the difference.
- Lightroom fails on the P950 shots and wins on the G9 shot.
- PhotoAI creates halos and artefacts on the G9 raw files and with the P950
superzoom it results in a new camera :) The out of camera raw of the P950
is very noisy and at full zoom soft.

I tried the new Lightroom DeNoise AI

Yes, I tried it. It does a very good job and a no brainer to apply, but
very slow. You probably need a modern GPU, My GTX 1050 Ti is slow. Topaz is
faster, can't decide which one is better, probably Topaz with some trial

Denoise is recreating some weird looking noise.

Fields of brook lampreys. That must have been a sight. I never saw them and
the 20 or so lampreys in the counting tank were catched by fishermen with
some kind of electric stunning device to catch all the fish.

No sharpening in lr. The photoai and dxo plugins work on the original raw
files. In these workflows lr is used for file management and post
processing (for that lr is excellent) they export another dng file. You
could drop lr completely.

DxO or PhotoAI

I'm trying to decide what workflow is best. Currently a mix of Topaz
PhotoAI, DenoiseAI, SharpenAI and DxO Photolab

https://www.repiuk.nl/projects/GESO/DxO-or-PhotoAI/

PhotoAI is really a no brainer, fast and integrates smoothly in LR. DxO
does an excellent job except sharpening which makes DxO and SharpenAI a
killer combo

2022-09-07 Thread Toine
Installing some kind of S.M.A.R.T. HDD monitoring tool (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.) could help detect HDD's ready to
fail. That said I had several failed HDD's and SMART didn't help. In fact
my oldest running HDD's have a red flag according to SMART. Backup is the
only solution. I rely on Goodsync for replicating files across 2 or more
HDD's, Amazon Photos and Onedrive to sync it to the cloud and backblaze to
create another backup. Backblaze is great but it takes its time before a
file is put in the backup queue. Amazon Photos was horrible and unreliable
the last years, they apparently changed something and now it's working as
expected. I check every now and then if files are really backuped to
onedrive, amazon and backblaze by checking their webversions of the tools.

Put the camera in manual or AE lock so every shot has the same exposure.
Take overlapping shots while rotating in the same spot. Merge the shots as
a pano in lightroom or special panorama stitcher software.
Most important is to keep the camera level which is easy to do with the
level indicators in the viewfinder.
Normally I use a monopod to rotate the camera.lens around its optical
center.

With modern software its very easy to use and produces a seamless stitch

to gas shortage. I'm lucky to have PV panels and inverter AC's installed
last year. Only problem: if the 230V fails the PV panels shut down. Maybe I
need a very very big tesla home battery but it's currently unobtainable and
Lithium is soon in short supply...
What's next? Very strange times...

The software is logi options+. if you want to switch between 2 or 3 pc or
mac systems options+ has an option called flow to do that. You then also
need the mx keys keyboard. Mx keys keys can also be programmed per
application with options+. I have that combo and its perfect for lightroom.
The scroll function of the mouse is amazing.

Maybe you hate sliding the sliders (exposure, contrast etc.) with your
mouse. I do and moving to the keyboard is also annoying. I even got a
loupedeck which I used for a while and dropped it in the drawer with other
junk.
My mouse died and I decided to get the most decadent mouse on the market,
the logitech master 3 which also has a second scroll wheel for horizontal
scrolling. It can be set to key shortcuts per application. For lightroom
that would be + and -. Now I can click the exposure slider in lightroom and
turn the second mouse wheel while moving and zooming the photo to see the

The noise was so bat(d) lightroom couldn't handle it. Tried topaz denoise
as a lightroom plugin but that was even worse. Then I remembered denoise
standalone accepts raw files directly. Simply amazing.
This is from a panasonic G9 which isn't the best you can get in the minimal

Re: Travel tripod suggestions?

2022-05-20 Thread Toine
Collapsed it's the smallest of all full size tripods. If you don't like the
PD concept of capture plates connected on their bags and the camera straps
(which connect to their plates) the tripod on itself is a strange beast
with a very annoying head if you don't have pd plates on everything. I got
hooked to the PD (capture) system after that the tripod had to come next,
just in case I need a tripod (which I hate to use and even more hate to
carry around).
You can swap the head and mount any tripod head, if that's the case a
travel tripod from sirui or manfrotto makes more sense and probably is
smaller once collapsed

Peak Design is an option. For a tripod it's very light, compact and sturdy.
It's head is an annoyance if you don't have PD plates on all your gear.
Some generic arca plates (the square ones) also fit without trouble. If you
remove the protection stops all arca plates fit.

I got a nikon p950 and now a p1000. Perfect for birding.and walking around.
Sold my 150 450 and switched to panasonic gx9 and g9 with leica 100-400,
leica 12-60 and olympus 9-18 lenses. Much lighter and the glass is amazing
and half the price.compared to pentax.

When I got the nikon I looked at the rx10 which is a better nicer cam but
2000 3000 mm vs 600mm is a no brainer.

GESO fun with a 3000mm

Small bird on a branch (@3000mm eq)

and yours truly as a shadow (@28mm eq)

If you zoom in you could spot the bird as a spot and while doing so
notice the lens more or less sucks at 28mm. You can't have everything

Re: GESO Foam

2021-12-16 Thread Toine
Ah yes, very good taste and thanks. I keep visiting that spot to find
the perfect light and green moss, the wild boars spoil it a little
when they plough through the green moss.

@Ann the foam isn't poisonous or chemical pollution. Most likely
organic stuff from decomposing plants, proteins and gas like carbon
dioxide or methane results in foam. Also some oxidised iron from the
soil (rust). The grease is collected before a lock or whatever the
name to regulate water height.

Re: GESO lichen

2021-12-09 Thread Toine
