Pop Photo Takes a Swipe at Nikon

2006-12-22 Thread dick graham

Pop Photo's Mike McNamara takes a swing at Nikon (popphoto.com) for not
making the Nikon D40 backwards compatible with older Nikkor lenses. He
finishes by saying: But something doesn't feel right about a new DSLR
that can't autofocus at any light level with a trusty Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D,
or even the expensive, digital-only, Nikkor fisheye 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX

k10d pop photo/ luminous landscape vs dpreview

2006-12-18 Thread dick graham

All of you who are disappointed in the k10d because of the dpreview report
should check popphoto.com's report or reread the luminous landscape
report. Pop Photo has long complained about the soft jpeg image quality of
the ist d series. They said that the k10d not only proves Pentax belongs in
the big leagues, it's an all star player. They went on to say that
Overall image quality is excellent throughout the iso range. Color
accuracy is excellent. Noise is exceptionally well controlled all the way
through and resolution is excellent at all ISOs. In fact there is less
than a 5 percent drop off in resolution from ISO 100 (1925 lines) to ISO
1600 ( 1845 ) and noise only climbs from very low (1.15) to low (1.95)
from lowest to highest ISO.

It's interesting to note the Luminous Landscape 2003 report on the ist d
toward the bottom of the report. ...there has been discussion on some net
forums about the cameras images being soft. Nonsense. Pentax has wisely
avoided over sharpening images in the camera. When properly sharpened they
leave nothing to be desired. Once again beginners and the uninformed are
confusing resolution with sharpening.

The Luminous Landscape report on the k10d said ...Image quality is on a
par with virtually anything else on the market.

So the bottom line here is that Pentax has given us the camera we have been
asking for for a very long time.

lenses. In light of the news that Pentax will introduce new dslr models
later this year I decided not to put out the $700 + usd for a ds2 and
looked for a ds if I could find one in the $500 range. I looked on e-bay
and saw that TriState camera company had 2 on auction or immediate buy. I
then went to their website and found the ds model for about $40 less than
they wanted on e-bay. I placed the order on Tuesday and the camera arrived
today. I ended up paying $550 for a brand new ds and am anxious to see what
the new dslrs will be like this fall.

Bottom Line summary. Pentax needs a hot new rig (say, 8-10MP) in

Well, I agree that Pentax could use a new 8-10MP body in their
lineup, but I found their analysis of the DS2 and its competitors
somewhat superficial. They didn't seem to note the reasons so many
find it attractive - the excellent (for a DSLR) viewfinder, the light
but solid construction, and the excellent ergonomics. Instead, they
seemed to zero in on some of the gimmicky features that it lacks.

These quickie comparos always seem to fall short of getting to the
heart of the matter. I suspect that the rankings are driven more by
marketplace popularity and advertising revenues than anything
else... They did have a favorable review of the DA14 in the same

New High End DSLR Speculation

2006-02-09 Thread dick graham

Let the speculation start now. This site thrives on second guessing
upcoming Pentax products. It seems very likely that it will be an 8 meg
camera with image stabilization, seeing that the new point shoot A-10
offers these specs. It will have a Samsung sensor and, hopefully, a much
improved image processor. Like quite a few new Pentax production
introductions in the past this one will appear to have some break through
technologies but then will fall short. It will end up shy of cutting edge
products that C N put out but will be a solid update camera aimed
squarely at previous and current Pentax owners.

region. Canon, Nikon, Konica/Minolta, Olympus, Fuji etc film and digital
cameras are stocked in these stores, but not our favorite brand. I would
assume that quite a few people purchase their compact film and digital
cameras in stores such as these. To find that Pentax is fast becoming a
non-player in these retail outlets has to be concerning. Along with that,
I haven't seen a Pentax aid on TV or in print in well over a year, maybe
longer. What in the world is USA Pentax doing to promote and sell the
brand? I also noted that on the new USA Pentax website that the MZ-S is no
longer offered. Three film slr's were listed, the ist, ZX-m, and
XZ-60. It's a shame that the MZ-S couldn't be made availabe for a little

ist D marketing

2003-02-28 Thread dick graham
The ist D looks like what each of us thinks it looks like. I think the
left side of the camera, as you face it, looks like a PZ. The right side
looks like the ist 35 mm film version. From a manufacturing and
marketing standpoint this makes some economic sense. Because the digital
state of the art is so fluid wouldn't it make sense for Pentax to dip into
already available parts bins to help keep costs down, knowing that model
upgrades are going to come fast and furious.

Oh, I don't know, I kind of like it. It's distinctive. It's a lot better
than yet one more anonymous alphanumeric mishmash, like DF-20K or 5XL-P.
Personally, I've been in the photo industry for years and I've written
camera reviews for a living, yet I still get all the anonymous names of
cheap SLRs mixed up--especially when the same camera has different names is
the U.S. and the rest of the world. At least with the *ist all of us know
exactly what we're talking about. And I wonder if we'd be talking about it
quite so much if it had a more anonymous name.

Another thing I hate is when a camera with a plain and distinctive name does
so well that the company begins applying some variation of the name to a
whole bunch of other cameras. The name Stylus, for instance, long ago lost
all meaning, at least in my mind.

Pål,
The really annoying thing about the anonymous alphanumeric names is that
they don't use them to adequately distinguish the models. I mean, the whole
point of calling something the 13 is that you call the next one the 14.
However, as often as not, camera manufacturers manage to make things
confusing rather than clear. Different cameras are called by the same name
(Canon F-1, Canon new F-1), or the same camera is called by different names
(Maxxum, Dynax), or the same camera changes significantly throughout its
production lifespan with no way to tell (K1000), or manufacturers leave it
up to consumers to distinguish between successive models (35mm
Summicron-M--four versions before the official name changed), or different
manufacturers use nearly the same name for competing products (Nikon D1,
Canon 1D).

At the very least, the letters should stand for something (EOS =
Electro-Optical System, RTS = Real Time System) and the numbers ought to
distinguish between models in a lineup and subsequent models over time. But
frankly, I like it when they throw all that crap out the window and go ahead
and give something a name. *ist is strange, but maybe it'll grow on us.

In the 70's, I lived in Wisconsin. Phillip Morris acquired a major brewer,

local breweries off the store shelves and out of the bars. They put them out

Then 15 years later, the wheel turned full circle. We went to a surprise

is no reason to expect they will do it now or in the future, especially
they
are saying that they think the market is shrinking. Doing so will be a
commercial suicide. According to the original Japanese news report,
Pentax
was quoted as saying to cut their current line-up of 6 cameras down to 3
cameras. They have not said they are going to replace them with 3 new
 cameras.

I'm not convinced. All MZ-series cameras are essentially the same camera
with different labels. Pentax is just trying to milk the last drop off
this chassis. In my opinion, the current MZ-series isn't really that
competitive. What Pentax did say in they press message was that they
intended to reduce the number in the line-up in order to increase the
sales of each model. I can't see how this could happen with the MZ-6 and
the MZ-60 as the volume models in the line-up.
We have lots of conflicting messages. The fact is that Pentax near future
line-up will consist of three film slr models (i have gooten this
confirmed by safe sources). If the MZ-60 and the MZ-6 are two of those
then the MZ-5n and MZ-3 must be discontinued without replacement or the
MZ-S needs to be discontinued. However,Chris Brogden claim Pentax will
replace the MZ-5n next year with a compeltely new and very different
model. If this is true, either the MZ-S or the MZ-6 has to go if the MZ-60
stays. At the same time, Pentax UK claim all future Pentax slr's will be
built on the same chassis: if this is to be believed there are three
posibilities; 1) the MZ- chassis, 2) MZ-S chassis, 3) A cmpletely new
chassis. Only the latter is likely (and what Pentax UK says) in my opinion
as the MZ- chassis is not suited for anything higher end or digital.
I don't agree that it is unlikely that Pentax will release a completely
new series of cameras. Thats the way Pentax model policy has always
worked. The Z-series was released 10 years ago; the MZ-series 7 years ago.
It is time for a new generation of cameras. We know that Pentax is working
on modification of the lens mount. We also know that all Pentax new lens
mounts have been accompanied with new series of cameras.
In all this, I put my faith in Pentax UK statements. Not because they have
to be true but because it is the best we have at present.

we all have the right to be as skeptical or as credulous as we please,
and to make our opinions known, but we don't have the right to make
unprovoked ad hominem remarks. We've just been through an example of
what often happens when people do make such remarks.

I've been on this list for some time now, and I was on it while The

It was said that Photokina was less seen as a news fair nowadays and more

The speculaters can guess whats in that safe. The pessimist will insist

New Pentax Ads!

2002-09-23 Thread dick graham

Last week I made that the statement that Pentax had no apparent marketing
and ad plan, that they would go months without an ad placed in the major US
photo mags and that I had never seen 1 ad for the MZ-S. This past weekend I
was watching the Pikes Peak hill climb on ESPN ( for our non US brethren,
ESPN is a 24 hour a day cable sports channel ) As each vehicle passed a
certain point on the race track going up the mountain, the TV camera picked
up a large Pentax red banner placed next to ESPN's banner. The next day I
was watching ESPN Sport Center news. They were showing highlights of a
Seattle Mariner-Oakland Athletic baseball game. The camera angle was from
behind the pitcher toward home plate. The rolling advertising banners on
the base of the wall behind home plate all of the sudden switched to 3
large red Pentax banners. In less than 24 hours I had seen more Pentax
ad effort on TV than I had seen in months in the pages of my favorite
photo magazines. The new Pentax ad campaign: Get the Pentax name in front
of the TV camera as often as possible!

Jostein, top middle photo- plane second from left is a US Navy Corsair used
heavily in the South Pacific theater, plane third from left looks to be a
P-40? used by the Flying Tiger's in Asia and plane on far right looks to me
to ba a P-51 Mustang used extensively to provide escort service to the
bombing raids over Germany. Plane on far left I don't recognize, it has
British markings but doesn't appear to be a Spitfire or Mosquito.

Anyone who knows the names of any of those planes?

Jostein. Please accept this as constructive criticism: (I should not say
too much as I did not take any pix whatsoever) - have you ever considered
the way in which the thumbs are arranged, on first viewing?
I once worked in a picture library and learned how to make up a
presentation. Most photographs have a direction. L-R, or R-L. Yes, ok
there are some which are T-B and B-T. Let's concentrate on the first
group. Separate the pix into L-R, R-L, absolute corkers (any direction).
The corkers go in the centre. The drectional shots are arranged around
them, pointing the way to the best shots. L-R go on the left, whilst (you
guessed it) R-L on the right. Just try this at home with an archive
 sleeve and lightbox.

Kind regards from sunny Brighton

In the other pics:2nd row far left-Corsair, 2nd row middle pic looks to be
a line of P-51 Mustangs with Allison engines before the switch was made to
the Rolls Royce Merlin power plant, 2nd row far right might be a RAF
Spitfire, 3rd row far left-Spitfire?, 3rd row middle US B-26 bomber, 5th
row far left-a pair of Corsair's, 5th row middle- Corsair in middle(you can
tell by the distinctive gull wing shape) sandwiched by a Mustang and ?,

To me high drive speed and fast AF are really not that important unless
your covering sports or other high speed action.

I must concur with Brother Bruce on this. Have you looked
that
the Nikon F100 and the Nikkor lens line.
Much better AF than the PZ1p, and much faster operation than
the
   MZ-S.
And F100 has over 300 g of weight more than MZ-S... it costs a
solid couple
of bucks more, and it still lacks some nice features of MZ-S:
wirelles flash
as a standard, MRC, leaving film leader out after rewinding,
reading
exposure information for each frame requires expensive add-ons
(software for
  PC)...

I recall from the thread that these features on the Pentax were
not considered important. What was important was high drive
speed and fast AF.

I believe Shutterbug and Peterson's Photographic mention that the MZ-L is
the replacement for the ZX-7, not the 5-n.

Pal, have you heard anything about when we can expect an updated MZ/ZX-5n,
MZ-3?

Isn't the MZ-3 discontinued?

The MZ-3 was originally intended for the Japanese domestic market only where
they were going to sell the MZ-5 and the MZ-3, but not the MZ-5N. The -5N
was meant for export. Pentax Corp. in the US made the decision not to sell
the MZ-3 in the US because of the price. This was a sales/marketing
decision. However, because of the number of requests from European
distributors, Pentax Europe added the MZ-3 to their stock assortment -
selling it (initially) as a kit with the 43mm.

Re: ZX-L and Pentax Metering

2002-05-07 Thread dick graham

If one brings his or her right thumb up along side the viewfinder of the
ZX-5n while shooting it helps one see the exposure info much more
clearly. The 5n is a great camera, I would recommend it without hesitation.

I'm very anxious to see a 5n replacement. As it is, I can't recommend
the camera (as I've noted here several times). In bright sunlight (most
of my shooting) one can't see the exposure information in the
viewfinder, and it's not duplicated on the external lcd.

The 5n replacement will presumably fix this problem, and probably add
some other goodies, like pentax functions. I'm looking forward to seeing
it. I hope they put aperture priority on the body.

While going to the site listed, I stumbled upon this under What's
New: www.luminous-landscape.com/sm-02-04-28. htm. Interesting article on
BW printing techniques. Please take note of one of the lenses he
recommends to start achieving what he calls the glow in BW prints.
Very interesting reading.

my assignment and I discovered something, I really like my
ZX-5n. I often joke it's the ugly step-child of my bag but by
golly it's a great little camera and with the battery grip
attached it balances well with M series lenses. If only it were
made of metal, so now after vowing I would never buy another 35mm

to squeeze the money out for an MZ-S after all.

P.S. I also had a great time reminding myself how versatile a 50
