The best part was meeting a geology grad student  a few months after it
was in the mag  He was talking about how funny it was to others gathered
around a campfire in Butte MT.  I said "oh wow"  he said "did you read
it?"  and I got to say... "I wrote it."

Oh what a great gallery! So interesting.. Can't even begin to pick a
fave.. such a good theme.  Windows next year??

Want to ask Paul where the abandoned house was.. out west, or in Wis?

aside to Brian, I took  that shot, kinda, back in the day.. went through
Virginia City

more than once over the years between 1973 and 2002 . Seems to me someone
used a different photo taken there for a PUG in the last year or so.. it
is one of the

less kitschy of ghost towns that are tourist traps out west.

I think Ancient Bath is my favorite. I love the colors and lines in this image.
At first I thought it’s the semicircular arches and circular decorations are
the ones doing it to me, but it’s the combination of those circular lines and
the straight horizontal lines. So beautiful and so silent, it does give the
feeling of antiquity.

I am not sure if Flour Mill screams “ancient” to me but I really like the
image. Same with The Last Plough.

Norfolk Island Cemetery just pushes my travel buttons left and right.

Thank you, what a lovely gallery.

RE: April PUG is up

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Thanks Bob - Paestum impressed us more than Herculaneum, maybe because both
Pompeii and Herculaneum are familiar through the many TV programs on them.
Paestum however, is not as crowded, is remote - you must walk for a mile along
a country lane to reach the site - unfamiliar, has one of the best preserved
Greek temples in Italy, and also one of the finest small museums I have ever
visited. Well worth the 30-minute train ride from Salerno, or an hour from
Naples.

Yes I think the diver is very interesting. I’ve never seen it before and at
first it made me think of the bull leapers of Knossos, until i read the
caption. I’d love to visit Paestum some time - Sir John Soane made some very
interesting drawings there, which are now on show in his museum here in
Londinium.

Thanks Dan - when I first saw this fresco, in situ, I was blown away by the
sheer elegance of the design, and the simplicity of form. Jan and I both
stood there much longer than we would have thought, looking at the other
frescoes in the tomb, all of which depicted the lifestyle of a young and
sociable man!

My favorite is John Coyle's "Diver." It certainly qualifies as "ancient,"
and the fresco itself is interesting and beautiful, while John does an
excellent job of capturing the scene. Henk's "Flour Mill" is not that
ancient, but he creates a very pleasing scene.

Yes I think the diver is very interesting. I’ve never seen it before and at
first it made me think of the bull leapers of Knossos, until i read the
caption. I’d love to visit Paestum some time - Sir John Soane made some very
interesting drawings there, which are now on show in his museum here in
Londinium.

My favorite is John Coyle's "Diver." It certainly qualifies as "ancient,"
and the fresco itself is interesting and beautiful, while John does an
excellent job of capturing the scene. Henk's "Flour Mill" is not that
ancient, but he creates a very pleasing scene.

Nice gallery!
- I see that Dan and I tied for the very most truly ancient subject
matter - pre-historic. (referencing Alan's comment I just saw)

Both are from the Jurassic geo period  -
Mine: the Entrada Sandstone is between 200 and 500 feet thick and hosts
to the largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world.
The Entrada Sandstone was deposited approximately 160 million years ago.
MIddle Jurassic.

but I like the figuratively ancient stuff some of you guys chose.

I settled for the Entrada because the photo had been scanned and it is
one of my favorite places. I have a couple of trilobites but they are
tiny and in
boring rock . Couldn't find my slides of petrographs in Canyonlands or
birstle cone pine from Bryce.

I have no difficulty filling my time at all, either Brian.  I'm

Two standouts for me - Flour Mill by Henk Terhell and Ancient Bath by Mark

Always enjoy this stalwart gallery - keeps inspiring me. I hope to be able to

Thanks Brian.

It was more complicated than it looks, had to insert two small LED lights
into the soundbox, reflecting the harsh light off the wood to make it warmer
and put the camera on a tripod to allow f/32 for depth of field :)

I was suprised this was the only musical instrument in the gallery though ...

Re: April PUG - Now Up!

Thanks, Henk. Now why couldn't I think of an imaginative title like that?

My favourite is Philips's "On Different Tacks" with Port trumping Starboard.
If youv'e ever been in a tacking duel, you'll know what I mean.

Dan and Malcolm used 'a fork in the road of life' in their submissions

certainly expands the boundaries of the theme.

Overall, my favourite is Henk's 'Traveller' narrowly ahead of Ken's

Well I actually like yours best , Brian, from a totally nice shot point
of viewthat works with the theme too... but Pat and Ken's forks
delighted... Ken, Iwas gonna do essentially what you didwith a map and a
fork but was too consumed with other stuff...

Love that both Paul and Pat were able to find such super appropriate
shots in their files - (um maybe Paul just walked down the street
recently for his.)

Pat's works on mutiple levels for me.. nice geometry :-)

Dan promoted "thinking _outside_ the box" but his photo was just the
opposite on a certain low level for those with naughty minds ;-)

I guess just Illustrating an expression, as opposed to just this one,
may not workbecause of cross-cultural variationsthat would be missed unless

it was in your knowledge base...

My favorite is Henk's, for the way it interprets the theme and also
because of its visual power. I also like Ann's but I can't really

Last year I photographed an attractive red-flowering plant at Canyon

it's very similar to Ken's plant. So I think I can now put a generic

ah-yeah :-) heyDid we have a discussion about Maine before? I lived in
Orono from 1960 to 1963 - husband going to the U, me, working there.
Then back with subsequent husband a few times climbing Mt Katahdin,
camping, etc.. or back to visit Maine friends.

Thanks for that nice info on paintbrush... sure looks like Ken's is
the variety you mentioned, and quite sure my stuff from the 80's is
as well.. photo'ed in the capitol reef and canyonlands... they are so

I was told by the pro I was shooting with that the flower is called
Slickrock Paintbrush - Castilleja scabrida.

April PUG - now up!

2014-04-04 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

A smallish gallery this month.

My personal favourite is Bruce's Cotoneaster in Blue Vase - the
colour, the lighting; just superb.

Other favs - Rob's Where the Needle hits the Vinyl and Dave's Twin Suns.

Overall, a very nice collection.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

Next up for May is 'Hairy' - my mind is already boggling in anticipation...

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

 G'day' all.

Well, a smaller gallery than for the past few months but an enjoyable

the Open Gallery, so that was good.

The prize for the most innovative interpretation of the theme (not that

right on topic, even though no Kodachrome was injured in its production.

 You'll find the gallery here:

Well, a smaller gallery than for the past few months but an enjoyable
one just the same - and several people took the opportunity to submit to
the Open Gallery, so that was good.

The prize for the most innovative interpretation of the theme (not that
there is a prize, mind) must go to Steve - difficult to deny that it's
right on topic, even though no Kodachrome was injured in its production.

You'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

I'm also taking the opportunity to re-post this image from the January
PUG. It's not officially part of the April gallery but it certainly
conforms to the theme!

http://pug.komkon.org/11jan/slides/JM-Kodachrome.html

Next up: May - Found Objects (now that's a theme that opens up lots of
possibilities)

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800
x 800; max. file size 300k) - see the submission guidelines for full
details.

Cheers

Brian

Thanks for your efforts on the PUG Brian.

The current page presentation is really very well done IMO.

The sizing of the individual works well also - didn't have to scoll any of
them.
