Thanks John and Igor. I may just format a 32 gig thumb drive to mac system and keep the 10.11 install program on it as a back up. Re: OT Computer woes.
Dave, I have never done this with an external HDD, but I have done that many times with internal ones. You can have multiple partitions on a drive. In this case, you'll have two partitions, one with Mac file system, the other one with NTFS. But that will not allow you easy sharing files between the two systems. Those would be two separate "compartments", one for each type of systems. (Strictly speaking, you can access NTFS from Mac, but read only, IIRC. And there are probably some tools on Windows that can allow you some access to the Mac file.) If the HDD is 2TB or smaller, you can have it formatted as "FAT" filesystem (which you called MS-DOS), - and then it will be accessible by both Mac and PC. To create two separate partitions, you'd need first to partition the HDD. Under Windows, you can use the built-in "Disk Management" tool. http://www.howtogeek.com/101862/how-to-manage-partitions-on-windows-without-downloading-any-other-software/ I haven't used one on Mac, but here is the description of it: http://www.howtogeek.com/212836/how-to-use-your-macs-disk-utility-to-partition-wipe-repair-restore-and-copy-drives/ (I hope it's correct.) Once you created two partitions on your external HDD (Don't make a mistake, and don't mess up your internal drive!), format each partition in its respective system. It might not matter, but I'd recommend the first partition for Windows, the second for Mac. Actually, the workflow I'd suggest should be: 1. In Windows, use the Disk Management tool, and create the first partition of the desired size. 2. Format it (within the same Disk Management tool) as NTFS. 3. "Disconnect" the HDD, connect to Mac 4. Create the second partition under Mac, using the Mac tool. 5. Format that as a Mac parition. Hope this helps, Igor David J Brooks Tue, 15 Nov 2016 11:11:45 -0800 wrote: I'm looking at setting up an external as both PC and Mac partitions. Re: OT Computer woes.
I only use Safari, don't know Chrome or Firefox. With the most current Safari and fairly current hardware, I sometimes get bad results. I remember several software generations ago (coding in HTML4.0) how tricky it was to code for compatibility with all browsers. There are sites which are still poorly written in that they expect the user will be using browser which are built to current standards, little allowance made for backward compatibility. So many browsers, so many generations of software, it is easy to understand how somebody's clever shortcut could freeze a slightly off kilter older browser. In short, upgrade. stan Sent from my iPad > On Nov 14, 2016, at 7:02 PM, David Mann wrote: > > Fragmentation isn't a thing on the Mac but yes 196G free shouldn't cause even > the slightest problem. Re: OT Computer woes.
As far as I know, disk defragmenting is not something a user should (or even can) do on a Mac. The same situation is with any Unix machines. Even under Windows, - disk defragmentation should be done on FAT files system, but many argue that it should be done differently on NTFS. It shouldn't be done on SSD drives. On spinning HDDs, individual files should be defragmented, but not the entire disk, as it used to be done on FAT disks. Read, e.g. this page: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2007.11.desktopfiles.aspx And some people even argue that even this degrag should be done infrequently, and primarily on files like "pagefile", registries, etc. Igor P.J. You may have some software that's incompatible with the old OS. It's going to be tough to come up with a solution without updating. And why not update? There's nothing to be gained by sticking with a long gone OS. Re: OT: Computer woes
Because those are not, unfortunately, in my current inventory of gadgets & stuff ... although, I just realized I don't need a crossover ethernet cable, I could just buy another ethernet hub & a spare monitor to get both up and running at the same time; share their drives to each other & copy the photos across. Maybe if I was going to keep both computers. But as soon as I get mom's photos off the hard-drive on the PC300PL, it's going to recycle. I'd run the recovery disk to restore the original preload & donate it to charity, but I don't think anyone will take anything as old as a Pentium III. Neither has a writable CD drive. The Win98SE computer doesn't have drivers for ANY of the USB thumb drives that I have. I searched the net for legacy drivers, but so far NO JOY! I have to figure out a way to get the photos that are still on the PC300PL without being able to use a USB thumb drive. But I have a plan! I've got a USB hard-drive dock. All I have to do is remove the hard drives and attach them to the docking station. Except that I need the MOLEX cable to power the drives, and I don't have one. Gotta' go to the computer store and get one, and it's just started sleeting. The drives from the PC300PL are nominally 20GB (I had added a second drive for storage & there are photos on both drives. I don't know if it's worth buying external enclosures for them, but I probably should sooner rather than later because they're both IDE & I don't know how long IDE enclosures will still be available. Re: OT: Computer woes
That's what I ended up with, although all I really needed was a 4-pin Molex male to 4-pin Molex male cable - $2 cable the computer store sells for $12. I've already got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Drive-Docking-Station-2-5in/dp/B002UAR8JY/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1393872041&sr=8-21&keywords=hard+drive+docking+station http://tinyurl.com/pp5uck7 ... (without the international mains cables), but I've misplaced the IDE power cable (top left), and I have other things I need to do instead of tearing the house apart looking for that *&$ cable. I thought I could just buy one to get the job done, but all they had in stock was Molex female to Molex male extension cables. OTOH, I got to the store & found something that will work. I got my rental car turned in & I'm back home without having a wreck & mom's photos are transferring as I write. I should have my car back from the shop this afternoon, and if it's not ready until tomorrow morning, there's no where I need to go today (including the shop that has my car) that I can't easily reach on foot even if the storm gets worse & we get significant accumulations of sleet. In fact, I just got a call & my car's ready.
