Re: PESO: Rose

2021-03-16 Thread Alan C
Nice, Dave. That FA*400 on the K5ii should give wonderful results. I
tend to use Jack Davis' formula for H/H at 500mm with my Sigma: TAV
1/2000; f8 & let the camera sort out the ISO. With the Sony sensors on
the K5's there is very little noise even at ISO 12800. With the quality
of that F*400 you would probably be quite OK at F5.6.

using manual exposure for this one as I just couldn't hold it still enough to

I've uploaded this one at 950px high (as per PUG guidelines) but I'm not sure
about that size as it doesn't fully fit in my browser window (which,
admittedly, I could enlarge quite easily).

A slightly better perching shot. I don’t like feeder shots either, but I won’t
pass one up if it’s a bird I haven’t seen here before. I did get a shot of one
of those at Point Pele 13 years ago but haven’t seen one since then.

Love him.. hope he affords you more chances.. I know him well from
upstate NY -- Ulster County - frequent visitors (at least back in the
70's) to

friend's feeder. Never got a clear shotback then -

Nice shots, a pair, though I wish there was not quite so much space
above the birdie's head at the feeder..

A field guide shot.

More like because the Latin for 8 is "octō", rather than "octem".

But it does make me wonder why they only started with numbers in the
seventh month. Why aren't January - June numbered rather than having names?

I think it would be cool if instead of June, we had "sex" for a month.

Re: PESO: Rose of Sharon

2016-09-22 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Bruce, Alan, Larry and David for your comments.

Larry, I like your comments about cropping it and using the white slider.

Alan, it is certainly related to the hibiscus (I called it a cousin), and
is in the hibiscus genus, but is quite different in culture and appearance
from the tropical hibiscus (Chinese Hibisacus, Hawaiian hibiscus or
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_rosa-sinensis , or the modern hardy
hibiscus plants, that die back to the ground in winter in our climate zone.

Rose of Sharon, *Hibiscus syriacus,* is a hardwood and a hardy
 deciduous
 shrub
or tree that loses it leaves in
winter but retains its truck and branches, and thus grows rather large if
not pruned. Both are spectacular in bloom.

In answer to Bruce's query "btw, what month is Spetember?", the answer is
the month of bad spellers. It is the ninth month in our calendar, but
it was the seventh month in the Roman calendar, hence the inappropriate
(today) name.

Lovely flower, perfectly sharp, colors look perfect.

One quibble and a couple of questions:
To my eye, it would probably look better if most of the dead space to
the right was cropped so that the flower was facing into the frame. That
would put the tip of the stamen(? pistil?) at about the upper right one
thirds composition point.

Could you boost the "white" slider just a titch, or maybe the exposure
and contrast to make the high tones pop a bit more without losing
detail, or brightening up the dark background too much?

How would this look in black and white, particularly if you brought the
green channel down a bit? You might get some nice levels of tonality
with the stamen/pistil bright, the petals a light grey and the
background dark grey/black. Or, it might look like crap.

Hello John,

JF No - they're different. The 540 has both a diffuser panel (for use
JF with wide angle lenses) and a catch light plate (for use when you're
JF using the tilt head to bounce flash off the ceiling); it reflects a
JF small amount of the flash output towards the subject so you get some
JF highlights.

360 has both too. It was that 'catch light' one used for the photo.

And for all: thanks for the good words! I did not expect that many
people would like it.

Ahhh, OK. I remember some flash units from the past had a regular head
that could tilt and/or swivel, and a tiny little secondary tube that
could provide the catch lights if you're bouncing the main head.

As for the lighting it was quite simple. I just put f/11 to put a

Hmmm. I don't have the 360, but I have the Sigma EF-500 (?). It has a

called 'catch light' in the manual as I remember) brings the flower
  from the dark.

 Hmmm. I don't have the 360, but I have the Sigma EF-500 (?). It has a
little flip out diffuser for the head. I wonder if that's the same sort
of thing you recall the manual describing as a 'catch light'.

No - they're different. The 540 has both a diffuser panel (for use
with wide angle lenses) and a catch light plate (for use when you're
using the tilt head to bounce flash off the ceiling); it reflects a
small amount of the flash output towards the subject so you get some
highlights.

your cooking habits. I bet your wife's if is more worn out ;-)

LOL It was made for me in 1981 as a b'day present. It was part of a
matched set, with my then wife having one with her name on it. This is
one
of those things that will get patched and held together for as long as

Thanks, Ken very pleased that you like the shot.

As for perfection, well, the world is an imperfect place. I got rid of a
blemish on one or two of the leaves, but wanted the OOF area as a social
statement to show the imperfect reality in which we live while alluding to
the idea that some concepts are a little fuzzy, blurry, or indistinct -
that you can find imperfections in and amongst beauty, while the dark
background implies that beauty can be found even in darkest, most
inhospitable, places. LOL

I normally do not critique anybody's photos, good or bad (just so that I'm
fair to everybody :-), but this one is really pleasing, even though it
is
a typical rose shot. Black background and water drip add excellent
effects.
Somebody pointed out somewhat out of focus leaves on right hand side, but
it
is not a distraction. He probably wanted this to show perfect and so did
I.
