LIke it a lot... if it looked like that on 7th street I might have gone out today :-) However, I had to reduce it to 67%, after copied the link to view in chrome. Neat Dan. The Green Herons were not as common as they are now at Radnor Lake until Katrina. Once that storm blew in then it seems a lot of birds starting appearing locally that haven't been seen before it. I wonder if perhaps that could be the case with your Blue or perhaps it just discovered the body of water. Thanks everyone! That means you, Frank, Dan, Alan, Marco, Dave, Jack and Mark - and future participants. This was shot with the settings TAV 1/250 f5.6 on the K-5 .. the system gave me 3200 for the ISO. FOr ages I've been shooting digital with aperture at 5.6 or 6.3 and ISO 400 (as if I were using my old lx and trix) But remembering that with the LX I set the shutter speed to 1/250 and the ap to f8 and bracket the aperture quickly if needed - or slowly if I had the luxury of time, I thought I'd try the TAV mode. I cropped this shot a little but not a lot. Getting the rain streaky like that was pure luck - I would have thought 1/250th was to fast to produce that - I was mainly on to the juextaposition of the blue people and the pink drugs rocker. anyway - happy you guys liked it ann On 7/20/2015 10:21 PM, Knarf wrote: Yes! While not the point of your post, I like the 5.6 and 6.3 for their tendency to soften bokah. Not being eager to shoot (generally) with a tripod, or punch up the ISO, they are border line slow for my version of hand holding. From: knarftheriault Hmmm. It's been a fairly wet October here. Not.oppressively so, but still fairly grey much of the time. This photo was one that got away. I mean it's okay, but only just. When I first saw them there was no taxi and other pedestrian; I could see past them across the street and right down the sidewalk to some small figures with umbrellas. Very moody but not intrusive However I couldn't shoot because of a newspaper box obstructing my view of them. By the time I manoeuvred myself to get a clear shot the damned taxi was there. I shot one anyway then one of them shifted position and it was gone. So this is the best I could get. Frustrating because I had a glimmer of a much better shot... ;-) The thing about taxis is they move on again fairly soon. Re: peso - rainy day
Sasha, I like the photo and the mood. While I in general like the square format photos, this one doesn't seem to work best for me. Somehow, I want to have it horizontally extended, along the tunnel of light. But at the same time, cutting the top off wouldn't work for me. So, I guess taking the circumstances (that you can not change the scene), I'd keep it in the current crop format. RE: peso - rainy day
I like it as is, but wonder whether there are in fact two different images contained in it. One involves cropping the heavy ceiling area out, up to the last millimetre or so, leaving just a touch as a frame. Two is much more dramatic, cropping to a long vertical format just to the left of the edge of the drain-pipe and also cutting out most of the ceiling, as in the first suggestion. This crop leaves the man walking into the frame, which is generally considered more dynamic, I think. Re: peso - rainy day
Hi Sasha: I like this shot. I think the position you catch the man in is just right. I like the tonality of this as well. But my eye sees the crop differently. I'd crop a bit off the bottom, say up past the reflection of the top half of the man in the water (lower right of frame). To me this gives more power to the man walking. When I look at it critically, I can't find anything wrong with it, or much that could be done better, though there are a couple of things I would try differently. The more I analyze it the more that I can find to appreciate in it, but, I just don't particularly like it, and I don't know why. On 12/3/2011 8:50 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: I like the mood, Sasha - not fond of square format for this kind of shot - When I first saw it, my initial thought was that it would be better in a horizontal format. I understand why you want the whole reflection of the man, even so, the first thing I would do would be to crop it so that the top of the photo is just below the shadow at the top of the frame. I'd also crop the bottom of the photo about where the reflection of the pillar, going up, furst intersects the pavement, rather than the puddle, about even with the reflection of the man's right arm. Another thing that I'd try is to crop off the whole top half of the photo, just showing from the man's knees down. To me, the reflections of the buildings, and the man are the interesting parts of the photo, and the rest (the non reflected bits) don't add much anything of interest, boring exposition rather than an interesting question. Could we see the frame before you cropped? curious why you would change the aspect ratio I agree. I'd also like to see the frame before if there is one. I think it might also be a better photo if he were entering rather than leaving the frame. ann On 12/3/2011 21:51, Sasha Sobol wrote: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/6449109181/in/photostream/lightbox/ or http://www.flickr.com/photos/sobol/6449109181 Would appreciate comments and con(de?)structive critique. --Sasha -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

USM has to be done very carefully on a high-frequency image like this. It can cause a harsh and jangly look in fine details at low rez for the web. I'd try again, sharpening selectively only on areas that need it. Godfrey On Oct 5, 2005, at 11:20 PM, Tom C wrote: Thanks. I agree about the rendering overall... I'm perplexed. Tom, It's inviting yet with a hint of foreboding that I find mysteriously interesting. Like the crescent horizon and the total volume of the scene. Tom, How do you usually tour the area, given personal vehicles can barely enter the park except on a lottery basis? The last several times to Denali, I've stayed deep in the park near the western boundary, past Wonder Lake, in a place called Camp Denali. Somewhat pricey, but IMHO definitely worth it for the opportunities it affords (especially photographic). You pay an all encompassing fee for 3 or 4 day packages that include pickup @ the park entrance, a 6-7 hour bus ride to the facility, all food (very good meals), accommodations in separate log cabins (with wood stove propane lights) all overlooking THE mountain (which is around 25 mils directly south). Your fee includes all of activities offered by the camp. Their buses are allowed to roam the roadway at will. The last several times, I arranged to be there during photo workshop, (late August/early Sept.) sponsored by Camp Denali led by Geo Lepp. Your only other options are to camp in the park, but you are still at the mercy of the bus system for transportation. The park does dole out permits to pro photogs that allow them to use their own vehicles on the park roads for a limited time period. At the end of the season the park does allow (on a limited basis) for private vehicles to use the park roads. BTW do you know where the buses turned around? Here we just call them idiot yuppies (grin). For 150 years the uniform of the woodsman was blue jeans, khaki shirt (in summer), plaid wool shirt (rest of year), hunting boots. Then the bambiests moved into the woods (at one time they were happy to just look at pictures) and things went to hell. Luckly they never go more than 50 feet from the marked trail because they are afraid of becoming lost and being eaten by a bear. I just wish they would learn to dig a hole for their toilet. I think they're both strong images, Val. I like the second one, because there's more fog or mist around the mountain to be seen. I think I prefer the first one, though. The solitary kayak, the mountain on the right, sticking out of the lake like some sort of a lone sentinal - to me it speaks to the isolation of the wilderness - definitely a different mood from the second, and one that says more to me. I also like that the kayak is so bright, a real contrast from the dreary day - nice juxtaposition that only re-inforces the mood of alone-ness. Great shot, overall. Townships or Laurentians? Beautiful area, wherever it is! thanks, frank -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true. -J. Robert Oppenheimer

Thanks Frank. It's Lac Ha! Ha! (no not a joke, it's marked as such on the map too) in the Laurentides, you can get there on route 381. A really *beautiful* area. Highly recommended, no matter if you go for taking pics, fishing or just sightseeing.

I like the scene with just the blue kayak. It livens up the gray day. The other one with the canoes looks to cluttered. Jim A. RE: PESO: Rainy Day
I'd choose #1. I think the composition is stronger with the kayak looming large in the foreground. The photo has some 'depth'. I also like the color contrast of the bright blue with the subdued background colors. The second shot seems 'flat' compared to the first, and the background boats that are only partially visible distract from the composition. Imagine it without them there. Not sure what the white dots are to the left of the leftmost boat, but they also seem to distract. Number 1 is very pleasing though. Tom C. Re: PESO: Rainy Day
Hmmm, tough choice. I haven't read the other comments yet, but I'm forging ahead anyway. Don't be offended, but I don't care for either. Instead, I like parts of both. The first one has got a great balance to it with the curving, cloud-shrouded peak in the upper right third and the kayak in the lower left third. But the kayak doesn't do it for me. Too modern and new, not enough history. IMO, boats in pictures need to have character and age to make me wonder How did that get there? What's its story? Okay, the second one has better boats in that they create angles and lines that attract my eye, plus there's the old wood under the boats. But the peaks in the background aren't as curvy as the first. Anyway, there's my US$.02. t On 9/2/04 9:38, Caveman wrote: http://www.pbase.com/image/33324162 http://www.pbase.com/image/33324101 Which one do you guys preffer and why ? Cheers !
Re: PESO: Rainy Day
I agree. The one with a single boat gives the impression that the photographer is all alone in a beautiful wilderness. The other looks like it was taken at a summer camp somewhere. They are both very nice shots, however. Christian wrote: http://www.pbase.com/image/33324162 This one. Better composition: i like the single boat in the left corner. The reflection is good in the water also. Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=|www.macads.co.uk/snaps _

I agree with Caveman - and I also prefer it has it has more contrast throughout the pic, giving it greater visual impact and also showing the subject more dramatically and clearly. Re: PESO: Rainy Day
Well, that's what happens when the thread is too long ;-) Thanks to all that commented. I quite knew that the one with the blue boat is stronger, but the blue looked a little bit too garish, however the other one was closer to the spirit of the place (but then I was the only one to know). I couldn't decide myself. Maybe if I had the red canoe in place of the blue boat it would had been a better photo ;-) Thanks ! Peter J. Alling wrote: I'm not going to comment since I expect Val to.
