I'm with you all the way; I saw you as one of the windows developers doing
his bit. And I support your bugging people. Sascha knows how muched I
bugged him to add the patch in the first place.

Excellent fellow! I'm more of a hanger-on myself, learning the processes.

Cheers!

With the test program I created last sunday, I was easily able to
produce a crash on NT4/IIS4/SP6 using basic php/mysql stuff, the crash
was in the TSRM library. I just ran out of time to deal with debugging
it.

I wouldnt say rock solid but Ive done a few million requests to it with
fairly complex scripts (mainly benchmarking) and on a well set up Win 2k
system with IIS 5 PHP ISAPI module is very stable, I think that Zeev finds
this too. I do not know if I would like to see it in production enviroment
yet but under Win 2k IIS5 it seems Good. Under NT 4 AFAIK it is terrible for
some unknown reasons. If we can get the few win issues sorted then I think
maybe then it will be up to product standards under win2k and IIS 5. (I can
never seem to reproduce IIS ISAPI bugs which annoys me :()

Is PHP ISAPI rock-solid now?...

That's not the general impression I've received: If it depends on which
other modules/technoligies you use, that needs to be documented pretty
heavily before one could really call it rock-solid. And that's the way I
understand it to be at this time.

While I think PHP ISAPI is important, perhaps even critical, I don't want a
billion Windows users to download it because we said it was solid and find
out differently for the technology they need to use it with. They'll never
come back.

the 3.79 Mb archive contains isapi, apache module, nsapi, aolserver module,

Is it? Where? for 4.0.4, www.php.net/downloads.php lists only
source code and two win32 binaries:

* 3.79 Mb CGI binary and ISAPI module included, MySQL support
built-in, many extensions included, packaged as zip

installer to install and configure PHP, and automatically

if one of those two zipfiles contains win32 DSO, it's hidden
too well.

Might be. But I left MS web servers for a good reason (actually

it's available in the php.net releases as well.

iis with isapi is imo a much better combo than apache with the apache
module (under win32), but the apache is more popular.
the build error should be hard to fix (already fixed in cvs...), and should
go in, but imo it's not worth rolling out another RC.
just prefix this function with the ZEND_API macro to export it.

RE: [PHP-DEV] 4.0.4pl1 RC2 rolled

2001-01-10 Thread Sam Liddicott

I think it is more of (my guess, blame me if I'm wrong) there aren't enough
active PHP developers for whom windows is the most important platform so
that window problems don't get noticed as quickly as other problems and so
don't get fixed as quickly and it ends up being the one system that appears
to hold things back and (naturally) more often falls the other side of the
cut off point.

No-one is to blame for this, how can one point the finger and say "Windows
should be more important to you than it is" although it is annoying.

Windows is also more different and has more problems (i.e. differences to
work with)

For instance I submitted the apache_child_terminate patch (edited via Sacha)
but it did not work with apache under windows - well how many platforms
build with *apache* in *multi-thread* mode?

It was picked up as a fault two weeks or more after the patch was submitted.

I avoid blame for this although my patch was deficient because I don't have
a windows build environment.

I think just just an unforunate thing, once more developers value windows it
will solve itself.

Anyway, this is my view of the problem, not a solution.

Re: [PHP-DEV] 4.0.4pl1 RC2 rolled

2001-01-10 Thread Cynic

Ok. I don't wanna be anyone's PITA, but is there something
like a list of priorities when it comes to this kind of stuff?
something like this:
1) CGI on Linux must build no matter what
2) mod_php4 on Linux must build no matter what
3) CGI on other Unices should build
...
x) win32 CGI should build
y) php4isapi.dll should build
z) win32 mod_php4 should build

As I wrote in one of private mails to Zeev, I think win32
mod_php4 -> unix mod_php4 is the most natural (and easiest) way
of development for many, given you have the closest possible
environment, and win32 mod_php4 happens to be rock solid (when
it builds)... but I'm biased, of course.

Anyway, it really seems like win32 mod_php4 has the lowest
priority of these, I think it would be otherwise available
from www.php.net next to the ISAPI binaries... (I'm aware of
php4win.de.)

So, is there something like a list of priorities when it comes
to building platforms? And what is it based on?

I think win32 mod_php4 would eat quite a portion of the ISAPI
pie if it was more known.

4.0.4pl1 RC2 doesn't build as win32 mod_php4, so probably
the patch I bugged you in should be there as well?

Cynic:

A member of a group of ancient Greek philosophers who taught
that virtue constitutes happiness and that self control is
the essential part of virtue.

Sorry - there must be some hiccup between the lists and Demon in the UK
then. I'm sure the messages will come flooding through soon.

The lists seem to be up. I am just working a messed up schedule
right now - I will grab the RC and build it shortly.

Re: [PHP-DEV] 4.0.4pl1 RC2 rolled

2001-01-10 Thread Phil Driscoll

Built on NT4 SP6. Tested with all my php stuff plus phorum + phpmyadmin on
IIS4 and Apache 1.3.12.
NB not tested anything to do with PDF!

No functional problems found, but the version number still reports itself as
4.0.4pl1RC1

Given the lack of emails in the last couple of hours, I suspect that the
lists are down. I suggest delaying a release until we are sure they are back
up and we can all communicate!
