Yes - welcome to the team.

I have added your packages to the Multimedia Blends page, and they
should eventually appear here:
http://blends.debian.org/multimedia/tasks/drums

Your ITP bug for dgedit did not really contain any information about the
package (other than it was needed for drumgizmo to be in main). So I
grabbed some words about the package from the upstream website. Feel
free to use & improve on these words for your real debian/control
package description.

Ross

Since you address me explicitly:

Sorry, I will not (at the moment, at least) take time to guide you in
detail on the basics of packaging and using Alioth. I am involved in
many exciting projects already, and I might help out with your needs
here too, but don't count on it.

Please read http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia - and especially
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/DevelopPackaging - and if you
still need help then please do seek it more generally, both at this
list (without addressing me in particular) and at other parts of the
larger Debian community.

Thank you. References, as above, are often sufficient guidance.
I try to hit them first. In this case, I overlooked the
link to that fine documentation.

Great that it was helpful. I do notice that you've managed to release
the code to Alioth now :-)

I will honor your request to avoid mentioning your name
specifically, except where appropriate to the context.

I, too, am excited about the quality of both the software
and the packaging made available through the work of the
DMT.

Oh, I agree that this team pacakges some _very_ exciting upstream
projects. I only count this team as one of the exciting things I am
involved in, however: What I meant to say was that my reason for
being relatively absent lately in this team has to do with my
involvement at other areas of Debian:

  * Package Node modules for a "decentral Facebook replacement"
usable by FreedomBox, and team up with Jérémy Lal on
maintaining such JavaScript and Node modules and Node itself.
  * Help upstream X2go authors form a Debian packaging team, now
also starring Reinhard Tartler of Debian Multimedia fame!
Some of us are meeting in person at a german Skolelinux
gathering mid february.
  * Hack on CDBS, with help from several new contributors,
including IOhannes m zmölnig of Debian Multimedia fame!
  * Hack unofficially on calendarserver, trying to get a
snapshot of v3.0 in usable shape (a customer of mine need
group calendaring, which was temporarily dropped in v2.4)

  * Hack unofficially on an ikiwiki metaframework, needed to
streamline the 20-40 website my girlfriend and I are working
on - e.g. using Sass to isolate and perfect design patterns
reusable across multiple webdesigns.
  * Package Ghostscript and related libraries, and move them to
team maintainance in the recently revitalized Printing team.
  * Explore setting up and optimizing ARM hardware usable for
FreedomBox - in preparation for joining the embeeded sprint
late february in Cambridge together with my girlfriend.

Oh. I didn't plan to write this much. Just wanted to share my
enthusiasm with you: I hope you can follow how I find above projects
exciting to work with :-)

 - Jonas

No, the above list of files is from a representative package's
debian/directory. Those are files I'm looking for
for mma

I tried this. It looks like I have some DNS

debian subdomains bugs.debian.org or snapshot.debian.org?

I don't understand the question.

Hi Reinhard,

I would like to build on previous packaging
effort for mma.

Clearly, mma couldn't have been packaged without
a changelog. Do you know where to find it?

I would hope there is another location for these files
than the package itself. Mma's package control.tar.gz only contains

control
md5sums
mmadebian
postinst
prerm

For example, a different package I maintain has these
files in the debian/ directory.

changelog
compat
control
copyright
files
patches
rules
source
watch

So my question is where can I find the
original files used to create this debian package?

Sounds like you are confusing upstream and Debian parts: Even if
upstream do ship a debian/ subdir, we should care for that ourselves,
and will ship our debian/ part as a separate file when redistributing
sources for our packaging - either as a diff or (with new dkpg-source
format "3.0 (quilt)") as a tarball.

As for your underlying question - how to start working on this package,
based on existing official packaging efforts, here's a smart oneliner I
just discovered to day, which generates a new Git repository from all
officially archived prior releases of a package (i.e. relevant when the
package was not previously maintained in a VCS):

  git-import-dscs --debsnap --pristine-tar --sign-tags mma

Hope that helps,

 - Jonas

I don't understand the question. You claim above that you do maintain

in pkg-multimedia as well, and create source packages from the git

Am joined to the lists.

Am looking through guidelines.

I maintain packages at pkg-perl. I'm familiar with the
basics of git, quilt, and the dh scripts, so if someone can
help me get started, I will probably be able handle most of
the updating.

My immediate questions are:

1) The app, mma, is not in your repository. Is that
something I can introduce?

2) I seem to recall that a debian package does not
include all the files used to create it. If so,
is there a source for the original package? (The
source code package, perhaps?)

Pointer to appropriate references will be welcome.

Welcome, Joel,

I'm a long-time Debian user. I mainly work in perl. I'm author of

As I already mentioned at the Perl list, I am interested in helping out

"for Debian" is unacceptable: All that Debian redistribute (in the

Sounds like you then need to strip logo, and rename the project -

Sure, and working in a team is a very efficient way to learn!

BTW, packaging new stuff is not the only way to contribute. You could
also take a look at existing packages of our team and post patches to
this list! If they are good and can be integrated, we will make sure

Either you have some private webspace somewhere, or you can upload to
mentors.debian.net and tell us the download url here! Or technically,
you could also use the service http://revu.tauware.de, although is
rather targeted for ubuntu.

Espc. for new packagers, I've made the experimence that getting the
package in shape before uploading it to git.debian.org is more efficient
than ironing out all problems via git.

It is useful in a way. It gives us one stop overview of all our

packages in Ubuntu & Debian:

https://launchpad.net/~pkg-multimedia-maintainers/+related-software

This way it's easier (at least for me) to track all bugs which affect

our packages and whether or not there are some ubuntu delta on them.

I believe this is an incredible opportunity to improve the quality of
applications in both distributions through coordination by leveraging
Ubuntu's vast bug reporting against Debian's robust developer activities.

Hi everyone,

Hi Harry,

welcome to the team!

At the moment I don't use git for a VCS, but I'm planning to start
using it for the next version. At
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/DevelopPackaging it says quilt
needs to be used for patch management, however at the moment I
currently use dpatch. Is this okay, or will I need to change to quilt?

Well, it says quilt *should* be used for patch management, because
it's recommended but not mandatory. However, if you want to convert a
package from dpatch to quilt, there is the
'/usr/share/doc/quilt/examples/dpatch2quilt.sh' script in the Debian
quilt package that does this automatically for you. You'll be
surprised how easy this goes. ;)

I'd just like to say that there is actually a bug on 1.1.8-1 (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=564665), that I've
only just noticed. I'll do my best to fix this as soon as possible.

Yes, it's a bug in your package. Keep cool, no need to apologize. ;)

Cheers,
Fabian

On our last meeting we agreed that since we are rather short on
uploaders, we require every package to have a "primary uploader" and
that he may agree to use another packaging system or even some other
packaging helper than debhelper. However, most current uploaders prefer
debhelper and quilt, so that's why that's still recommended in our wiki
pages.

I've taken a brief look at lives, and while I haven't used it yet, it
indeed looks very promising. I'll consider putting me in the Uploaders
