Yeah, maybe this was most obvious for me with the "i" because it is next
to the volume button/slider - which is grayed out if n/a. On the other
hand having it everywhere where
SDT Extras work, but not as a screensaver.

Well, this is excellent news,
If the URL is stored in an item's -weblink- field, then when clicked on
Material will call -window.open(item.weblink)-. Your browser should then
prompt what to do. So, for a custom URL protocol I'm guessing you'd need
to configure your browser on how to handle it.

yet in the cache, it will not be displayed at this point.

used to browse the LMS web UI (be it default or material)
It should also work on iOS devices, since there's an iOS version of the
platform I'm using (so fmp18 protocol would work), and that's all I need
