I know there is a problem where in some cases, LMS does not call the
player's de-registration process and so it ends up with an instance of
the part of shairtunes2W which does mdns service to not be killed, and
then you have multiple registrations - that's a pain, I have to think
about a solution

(running the LMS server from the WHS console, from the NAS as Admin and
even trying to run the Spotty.exe directly as admin) it keeps telling me
that spotty.exe is not a valid win32 app (in addition to several other
issues that I've managed to workaround; installing the plugin causes
quite a few).

Running the latest nightly build of LMS and it seems to run quite
smoothly as long as I don't install the app. After that it goes haywire
and getting LMS to run means I have to use remote desktop, the
individual exe-files and 'run as admin'.

Is there anything I can do, or should I just migrate to Raspberry?

Just to be clear, I'm using the flac manifest
(http://vs-dash-ww-rd-live.bbcfmt.hs.llnwd.net/al/lossless/client_manifest.mpd)
with vlc 3, so the time difference is for flac (rather than aac or
anything else) through vlc versus the plugin.

My seconds to delay is 'no delay'
With VLC I'm playing though pulseaudio to headphones - there may be some
slight resampling going on
With LMS the player is squeezelite - my normal settings there do
transcode up somewhat, but this normally gives next to no delay -
certainly not minutes

If you have a NAS then definitely you should use that with a Pi -
especially if you have a 2 drive NAS offering Raid 1.
If you use a HD attached to the Pi you will probably need a powered USB
hub and the Samba support in piCorePlayer is limited so management is
far easier via a NAS.
Just make sure that your NAS & Pi are both wired and both have static IP
addresses.
Backup (you do backup your music files don't you?) is also going to be
far easier with a NAS.

The setup with piCorePlayer is just a case of installing the extra file
system tools and then mounting the appropriate share on the NAS via NFS
or CIFS/SMB from within the LMS tab on the piCorePlayer.
The only caveat is that you need the NAS to be fully up and operational
before you boot or reboot the Pi otherwise it won't see the share.

When the Flac streams restarted, I did some testing and I heard this
dfiference one evening during a Prom concert (see edit on my post of
12-Jul-17) and thought it was odd as I had checked this before and then
there was little or no difference.

So I have looked into this as I had assumed a coding error or something
had changed.

A bit of background. For live DASH the audio is divided into chunks.
Each chunk has to be fetched individually using a http/GET and each
chunk has an URL with a unique timecode. In the case of the Flac
streams the timecode multiplied by 3.84 gives epochtime.

So I did a side by side comparison of the URLs for the segments being
fetched by Firefox player and my plugin and the timecode for the
segments being fetched were very close. So in this case I was not
getting the minutes delay.

End result - I need to do more test to see if this "delay" is consistent
or it varies (e.g. Is Prom stream DASH header different in some way) .
If it varies - determine the reason.

Technical Info.

To minimise rebuffering, the plugin tries to pre-fetch segments.
Pre-fetching means fetching chunks that are not realtime but a few
segments older. Currently plugin is setup to prefetch 2 segment which
would result in live stream being about 7.6 secs for Flac or 13 secs for
AAC behind realtime. LMS players have internal buffers and for live
streams the player will nto start playing until the internal bufer has
reached a threshold (i.e. Plugin setting Buffer Fullness Threshold).
With Flac the max threshold is usually reached in 2 segments (I think)
but this shouldn't be causing the delay.

Last year one of BBC technical posted in the forum that my plugin tries
to fetch segments too soon (i.e. plugin was trying to fetch segment that
weren't yet read) and BBC weren't happy as it created lots of log
messages on their servers. So I included a "guard" of 2 segments.

This means at worst plugin should be about 4-6 segment behind firefox
which for flac is 12-20 secs.

No. The BBC R3 Flac stream is always in Flac. Once data is being sent
from plugin to a player it cannot change format without stopping and
restarting.

Perhaps I didn't explain my theory properly in the previous post. DASH
stream allows for some of the characteristics can change dynamically
while streams is playing. I'm wondering whether some of the parameters
which are used to calculate the "Live edge" (e.g. the segment number of
the lastest available segment) change from "Normal " BBC R3 to when
broadcasting "Prom live".

I seem to have installed Spotty, and get some music out - but while LMS
is running I keep getting a series of bursts of 4 CMD.EXE windows boxes
opening up continuously, as if it is trying to install something it
can't find.

Any ideas?

Further questions:
- what is the "IO:Socket:SSL module"; do I need it, and if so, how do I
install it?
- what is a Spotify 'Client ID', and how do I get one? I do have
playlists with over 500 songs.

My LMS Server time zone is reported as "Time zone: Europe/London (BST,
+0100)".

I couldn't find a version of VLC 3 for ubuntu 17.04 (the ppa master
version for 17.04 never seems to have been successfully built, but I see
the 16.04 one was at the end of June), so I git cloned a source version
on Saturday July 15th and built it myself (not too easy, I had to
install loads of libraries, overcome compilation errors on qt5,
etc).

I haven't quite established the time difference between Firefox and vlc
3.0, but I think vlc is around 1.5 minutes behind firefox. All quite
strange :)

I've been working with the portaudio pulseaudio hostapi developer the
last couple weeks and have fixed several issues.

The workaround in squeezelite is no longer required to handle the hang
on sample rate change.
Fixed a pulseaudio hostapi segmentation fault on exit.

A new '1.8.6-987 pulseaudio squeezelite build'
is available on sourceforge. Older builds have been removed.

The pulseaudio library still doesn't support stream time reporting. The
developer is working on it.

I was running LMS on an Synology DS411. Considering Spotify's step to
abandon the Squeezebox as platform, I started looking for alternatives.

I understood that Spotty does not support the processor in my NAS at
this moment. Are the limitations of the processor such that ARM LE will
never be supported or are there any plans to support it in the future?
Thanks.

Just checked the code in more detail and I found because of rebuffering
and possibly limited testing, I put in a special "safety" factor to
start Flac stream 50 segments older - 50*3.84 secs = 192 secs which is
just over 3 minutes.

When comparing segment numbers of Firefox and Plugin - I must have
convinced myself they were closers than reaility.

However, if I reduce this "guard" to zero - I get occasional rebuffering
when segments take longer than 5 secs to arrive. I need to test on a
Windows system as well just in case this was needed for Windows systems.

Indeed it does: Spotty requires the Perl module IO::Socket::SSL. You can
NOT use Spotty without this module. Please use your operating system's
package manager to install it.

This makes things somehow complicated :) I have no idea what to do now.

I know there is a delay but on my setup it is not consistent. TRying to
see what make the difference.
What timezone is the LMS server in ? (segment number calculation has
make allowance for difference between server time and BBC CDN time)

What version of VLC ? I installed a supposed nighly build but there is
no support for DASH Flac.

I may have been setting the value too high because at the time I had
problems with home network and it may have been partial causes of
rebuffering.

I have set guard to 2 segments (2*3.84 = 7.6 secs) and it seems stable
on a Linux system.

I have also just been testing Firefox Flac against Plugin Flac, Plugin
Binaural and direct MP3

The Firefox Flac and Plugin Flac are now about 6-10 secs apart
Firefox Flac is about 1:30 behind Binaural and MP3.

Still need to do a Windows setup.

Hi,

I'm having trouble running Spotty on my Synology DS212+ NAS, which,
according to the specs, has a Marvel Kirkwood processor.

As far as I can see from previous posts, some people have managed to get
it running on these processors once they have upgraded to LmsRepack

However, the helper says that it's armel-linux (which is not supported).

Do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks.

FWIW — these registrations are clearly still an issue but were
drastically reduced since I fixed the flaky Wi-Fi reception of my
Squeezebox.

Thanks Ronnie!

I was able "hack ish" my RPi3 running xbian OS with Kodi in parallel
with LMS. I must say I have no Linux experience so diving into terminal
and ssh-ing into the Pi was quite scary and frustrating at the same
time! Took me a better half of the day to look up commands and editing
the /etc/fstab so it would mount the NAS drive every time the Pi
reboots.

Well worth the effort now that both is running and I really want to say
another BIG BIG THANK YOU to Michael doing all the hard work so we can
have it so easy by adding a plug-in!

PS. I should clear up that it was my intention to run Kodi and LMS only
on the same Pi as I already have a SBT(albeit with a dead screen) to be
my SB client.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announcement: Cursebox -- a terminal interface

2017-07-19 Thread decibyte

Hi all

I've just released a first version of *Cursebox* -- my terminal
interface for controlling Squeezeboxes.

23168

Further introduction can be found in 'the project README'

I've been using it myself daily for more than half a year, and I think
it's now mature enough to publicly share it, although there are still
lots of things that I'd like to implement.

The audience for this is probably not that big, but I'm sure that the
rest of you out there, spending larger parts of your days working in a
terminal, will appreciate this easy way of controlling your day to day
soundtrack.

Cheers, Mikkel
