If you have not already perused it, the QA orientation page is a good place to
start. There you will find directions on creating a Bugzilla (our
bug tracking system) Account and other information. I also strongly
suggest looking at the Level 1 and Level 2 documents on the
Orientation page as they give a good overview of how projects at the
Apache Software Foundation (ASF) operate and the common
infrastructure provided to all projects.

of Technology. I am also an Undergraduate Research Assistant for Dr. Marco

as an assignment for our Software Testing class. I was ecstatic when I read
Keith's kind comments! I am not sure how much time I'll be able to

I am a long time user and advocate of Openoffice software.  I can't
remember precisely when my first introduction to Openoffice was, but it
would have been around 8 -10 years ago.  Openoffice has enabled me to work
on office files and documents, without having to afford Microsoft's Office
software.  The extensiveness of capability and cross-compatibility, coupled
with ease of use, has kept me as a long time user of Openoffice.

Having experienced the benefits of the Openoffice software family, I want
the opportunity to give back, in any way that I can offer.  Reading that
there is a place for debug verification, I believe that is something that I
can be of immediate assistance with.  I love trying to push the limits of
software that I utilize, so this definitely fits.

I have office and technical skills, but not programming experience.  I am a
long time CAD operator, and business office software user.  Currently I am
a proposal process engineer working for KUKA Systems Aerospace Group.  If
any of my professional skills or experience can be of use as an Openoffice
volunteer, I would be thrilled to offer my contributions.

We can always use someone with this kind of background.


 What I don't really have experience with is the Open Source Community. I
 have been reading through the QA orientation module. I have opened a
 Bugzilla account. I am used to working with Jira, but Bugzilla looks fairly
 similar so I don't think the learning curve on it should be that steep.

If you are entirely new to open source you might want to review some
of the other orientation pages as well, so you get a feel for how
we're organized and how we make decisions.  It is very different from
a hierarchical top-down corporate structure.  We're very flat and
self-directed.

 reports? Is there a specific procedure for doing that?

We just release Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 last week.  So reviewing
incoming bug reports from users, to see if there is anything

New Defect Reports section of the QA Orientation page.

the OpenOffice community. I have been a software tester for about 2 
years. I have particular experience with manual testing, test case 
writing, and accessibility standards for software. Although I have

Hi qa,
I would like to introduce myself: I'm Amali from Victoria, Australia. I've four 
years of real experience in software, mostly in C++. Operating systems I've 
worked with and known about are Unix, Linux, and Windows. I've got Junior Linux 
certification LPIC-1 as well.

I'm interested in C++, Python, Perl, Linux projects.
I've got coding experience in C++ and I've done a good amount of manual testing 
as well; however, I would like to learn more about QA, in areas such as test 
automation, writing scripts, and automatic testing.

Please review our archives[1] and recent emails about the processes for
testing the new AOO 4.1.1 showstopper bugs and report on them. Make sure to
mention the machines (or VMs) at your disposal for testing the application
under those platforms.

Hello,

This is Ambika Rajagopalan, with ~6 years of QA experience in both manual
and automation testing using selenium/Java. I would like to contribute for
openoffice QA team and get better knowledge about open sourcing.

I would really appreciate if someone help me from where I can get the
latest build and start testing. I also went through the issues page and
getting familiarized but I don't find a page with latest build.

Hello Jochen,

I've added you to the qa-team in Bugzilla, so you should be OK there now.

We had some spam issues on the MWiki and new accounts were suspended.
But Andrea might be able to help you get in.

As for testing, we're right now doing verification testing of the 4.1
beta release candidate, to make sure that the critical bugs that the
developers marked as fixed are actually fixed.   If you want to help
with that Yuzhen can help you get started.

But you mentioned unit testing...  You might want to ask on the dev
mailing list about that (d...@openoffice.apache.org).  QA doesn't touch
unit testing.   But we do have a Java/Eclipse based GUI automation
testing framework that needs some attention, if you are interested in
that.

Hello Keki,   Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project.  I apologize
for not responding earlier.

We have some web pages to help orient new QA volunteers to the
project.  You might want to start here:

Since you already have some QA experience much of this will be review.
 But it will help you get started with things like signing up for a
Bugzilla account.

You mention experience with Java and JUnit.  You might want to then
take a look at our test automation framework.  It allows us to define
test cases using JUnit and run those against the OpenOffice GUI.

Give that a try, and if you have any questions post to the list and me

 doing manual testing for about four years and have started automation practice
 for about a year. I understand and use ?Java from a Testers perspective and I 
 also
 have a good understanding of Selenium Webdriver API along with junit or 
 testing. I also have a clear understanding of Maven as a build tool and 
 concepts of Continuous integration.


Hello Keki,   Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project.  I apologize
for not responding earlier.

We have some web pages to help orient new QA volunteers to the
project.  You might want to start here:

Since you already have some QA experience much of this will be review.
But it will help you get started with things like signing up for a
Bugzilla account.

You mention experience with Java and JUnit.  You might want to then
take a look at our test automation framework.  It allows us to define
test cases using JUnit and run those against the OpenOffice GUI.

Cool.  AOO is a more traditional desktop application, but the SQA
techniques are similar, at least the methodology part.  Our aim is to

 could be helpful with manual testing, fix verifications, and localisation
 testing as well. I am fluent in Russian , french and English.

Most new volunteers introduce themselves informally, usually telling
things like:

- your preferred name if not obvious from your email address

- where you are from

- general level of familiarity with using OpenOffice

- any prior experience with software testing

- any other fun facts you want to share

Since this is a mailing list, the posts we make get sent to all other
QA volunteers on the project.  So this is a good way to introduce
yourself to the team.
