[Qgis-user] problems installing QGIS 1.8 on windows 7-64 bit
I know others are having this problem, but I have yet to stumble on the solution. I am trying to install QGIS 1.8 on my laptop (Windows 7-64 bit). Whether I use the standalone QGIS installer or the OsGeo4w installer, the procedure hangs during the postinstall stage here: running postinstall qgis-common.bat In the OsGeo4w installer it just freezes, but with the standalone installer, I get a dialog box with the message find string (qgrep) utility has stopped working findstr shows up in Task Manager tying up 50 processes, and even after I kill the installer and try to stop findstr in Task Manager, it keeps on ticking for quite some time. But when I switch QGIS to the new GIS theme, then some of the icons appear duplicated: Add Vector in QGIS and Add GRASS vector use the same icon. Another possible source of confusion. I'm not sure what I'd suggest to make everything work uniformly. It would be ideal if the GRASS application icons were identical to the GRASS plugin icons, but *different* from the generic QGIS "Add Vector" and "Add raster". What about "Add vector" is a single icon and which kind of vector is choosen in a second dialog ? Could be shapefile, postgis, spatialite, grass, Good idea. But that's more than just a change in icon theme... It means moving some of the GRASS plugin functionality to the qgis core. --strk; ,--o-. | __/ |Delivering high quality PostGIS 2.1 | / 2.1 |http://strk.keybit.net - http://vizzuality.com `-o--' This mail was received via Mail-SeCure System. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user

Re: [Qgis-user] Smooth DEMs
Hi Clemens, To smooth dems, use the following: Install http://www.saga-gis.org/en/index.html saga gis install the sextante plugin. Under the Analysis menu, open the Sextante options configuration, click on saga. Sextante should find your install of saga (I'm assuming a windows platform here) at something like c:/program files/saga-gis/. Ensure the use min covering grid system for resampling is checked. Click Analysis menu -- Sextante Toolbar. This opens the toolbox, you can type filter in the text search. Alternatively, just expand saga -- grid filter, you will have ~ 10 filter choices. Not sure of the filtering application (cartographic or analytical) you can employ the simple filter with its default smooth using 11*11 for ~ 990m output. If maintaining slopes are important, review the multi-directional filter as it implements a lee based filter. I'm pretty sure the input raster must be tif. #- Moving the srtm 90m? to 1km resolution is resampling the dataset. You can use the built in gdal tools-- http://www.gdal.org/gdalwarp.html warp dialog for this. In the dialog after you have entered the information click the pencil to allow editing of the config text, add the following argument (before the -r method) to allow resample to 1km -tr 1000 1000. Ensure resample method is not near but bicubic. #- You can empose spatial scale on your orginial srtm90m by filtering with a large filter say 11*11 (~990m support area) but the dem posting will remain 90m. This avoids resampling may be a better way forward, I've used the aforementioned approach for some soil tools. Re: [Qgis-user] Qgis 1.8 : How to do an Unilateral buffer
I'm working on Cameroon coastal layer shapefile and i would like generate several unilateral buffers : buffers only on one side (toward ocean) and no toward continent. laurent, If you create your buffer of the continental edge then erase (use the difference geoprocessing function) the continental side with the continent feature you'll get a unilateral buffer. Use the buffer as the input vector layer and the continental feature as the difference layer. This process assumes the continent data set has a polygon geometry. -- View this message in context: http://osgeo-org.1560.n6.nabble.com/Qgis-1-8-How-to-do-an-Unilateral-buffer-tp4987586p4987690.html Sent from the Quantum GIS - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
Re: [Qgis-user] Difference in Area/Perimeter calculations
Now let us go deeper. I tried one polygon of the same layer having area of around 1300 hectares. I keep layer in Projected form as 32643 and used area calculate tool from Attribute tool bar. I keep snapping of 20 pixels for the layer so that my cursor should not deviate. The area comes as 13.099 Sqkm which is equal to 13099000 sqm. (layer was in UTM and tool used ellipsoid as per default in Measure tool). Now we look at area calculated by 'Export/Add geometry tool' previously using ellipsoid and layer CRS (UTM) for the same polygon which comes 13108140.7 sqm and 12988046.4 sqm. respectively. The difference between ellipsoidal measurement comes to 9140.7 (about 1 ha.) meter which may be rounding error, and error is around .076 percent. The area difference between ellipsoidal and projected measurement for same polygon comes to 116094.30 sqm around 16 hectare. so error is 1.23 percent which may rise when area will increase. [Qgis-user] beautiful maps made by QGIS
Dear everyone, I have a brief presentation on styling with QGIS and I want to highlight some examples of really nice cartography made purely with QGIS. Most of my inspirations comes from Underdark and Tim Sutton's blogs. If others have examples of QGIS outputs you want to showcase, please share a link. [Qgis-user] Save style not saving?
Hi, I wondered if anyone else had noticed something like this? I've been updating some of my default style sets, and I'm noticing that if I use the Save Style button everything appears to go fine, but nothing is saved. It isn't a write permission issue as I can save as default and move the .qml file to my templates stash. I can load a saved style fine. -ramon. [Qgis-user] terrain plugin and gdaldem different use of z-factor and scale?
For creating hillshades/relief in a Lat/Lon CRS, the option for: - Terrain plugin is to use a Z-factor=20 - GdalTools DEM is to use Scale (ratio of vert units to horiz.)=20 More so GdalTools DEM is also using Z-Factor for vertical exaggeration. This is very confusing for newbies. -- cheers, maning -- Freedom is still the most radical idea of all -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ -- ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
