Merrill,

Yes, it is the same procedure with the Baclofen pump. It is refilled once
every six months, and adjusted as needed. But of course it's filled with
Baclofen instead of morphine.

2008-05-20 Thread Lori Michaelson
Like Corie Jones ... I have tried everything but the pump without relief.
And I have decided that I am not going to let another doctor messed around
with my spinal cord anymore since the current pain than I have is probably
directly related from the shunt surgery I had in 1995. I ended up having
three surgeries that summer. The pain did not start until two years after
the surgery but it is difficult to explain why that is the culprit.
Like Stacy ... keeping busy and/or sleeping are the only two things that
help my pain.

2008-05-19 Thread Stacy Harim
I've tried morphine and dilatid(sp?).  Neither have worked.  Not even for my
back where the screw has moved its way through the vertebrae. I have also tried
oxycodone.  I do take 50mg of cymbalta but that was prescribed when I was going
through all of the spinal surgeries and got really depressed about it in the
hospital.  I gave up on all pain meds except for the lyrica.
One thing you all in pain might want to ask about is methadone.  It does
something with the nerve endings to relieve pain.  It's much less of mg. for
pain.  I did take it at one time but when my spasms got really bad, I had to
quit it to take diazipam because it lowers your heart rate. I got it through my
pain doctor.  It did really work and I am considering taking it again because I
no longer take the diazipam since my spasms are much better since I got my
spinal surgery.
It's something I would consider if your pain is that bad.  It worked for me and
my pain at one time was out of control.  Since I have been taking lyrica, its'
been much better but since my back is in so much pain I am going to talk to my
doc about the methadone again.  I think it makes a difference.
I'm sorry to hear about your pain.  I took a health psychology class and we
learned about managing pain and it personally helped me learn how to manage
it.  There are things you can do to help take your mind off of it.  In some
ways its kind of like medatation by thinking of other things in a nice quiet
setting that relax you.  I'm sure most of you in a lot of pain have tried
everything you can think of but just letting you know some of the things that
help me.
Good luck,
Stacy

Stacy, you might be a good candidate for a pain pump which is surgically
implanted in your spinal column or cord but I'm not sure which and it's much
easier on you because it goes straight tov the sorce and requires smaller
doses because of this.
You should ask your doctor because I've heard it's changed peoples lives for
the better if it works.
I've tried to get one but since they've cut medicaid to the bare roots
there's very little covered any more.
That doesn't mean you can't though, it differs state by state I think and if
you're on Medicare I know it's covered.

is so much more going on in my body that even the doctors can't get a grip

I said, it helped me emensly.  It's worth finding out more about it.

I considered a baclofen pump.  WE thought it was a pressure sore making me have
so many spasms but it turned out to be the osteomyelitis.  Anyhow if the spasms
weren't to get any better, I wanted the pump.  My pain specialist puts them in
and then the spasticity clinic maintains them.  My pain doc said that he could
put the pain meds in as well instead of having to take them orally.

2008-05-19 Thread Stacy Harim
I am considering it if I dont get relief from this next surgery.  I'm just
freaking out because more rods.  At least 3 more levels.  They are already from
T7 all the way into my pelvis so now we are talking about T 4.  I'm so
nervous.  I was a quad and got better and now I feel like I am going
backwards.  It's hard to know you are going to lose it instead of just losing
it without knowing.  I am so afraid of losing idenpendence.  I know a lot of
you have caregivers but I honestly cant stand anyone around me for very long
every day.  They have to come at least for 5 hours because they come from 30 to
40 miles away.  They also have a habit of not showing up and that freaks me
out.  I can't imagine getting stuck either in my bed or in my chair.
Anyhow I jumped off subject.  I will definatly look into it if I don't get
relief but I think I will since I had relief when I first had this fusion.  I
only hurt if I did too much.  Now everything is too much but I still keep
getting up because I don't want to have to lay in bed all day and let my life
go by on me.  I do what I can as carefully as I can for now.
Thanks for the advice,
Stacy

I know weed helps but it has a poor effect on me now that I am a bit older.  It
makes me want to eat and sleep.  I live alone so I cant be that lazy and I
don't want to gain weight.  Plus I can't afford it.  Its a good idea though.

I'm sure most of you in a lot of pain have tried
everything you can think of but just letting you know some of the things that
help me.

Good luck,
Stacy

Merrill,

Is the morphine in the form of a pill, a pump or a patch?

FW: [QUAD-L] neurontin

2008-05-18 Thread Merrill
I know this drug is helping people as is its other name by Gabapantin. I
also know that it is hard on the kidneys. What I do not understand is why
doctors prefer it rather than say time released morphine which granted is
addictive but whatever works you are going to use. Neurontin did not appear
to work for me but I stopped taking after the required dose was high, like 4
4x a day.

Luckily I get the morphine which works 60mg X 2 daily.

It is the dry mouth caused by the drug. It is so bad my teeth stick to my
lips. GROSS!
