Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Timing Belt

2018-07-11 Thread Nigel Plant
No not done it yet. Started the job, but first checked alternator with fan
belt off. Lo and behold noise was alternator bearings, had a spare from the
Xtreme so fitted that. So can belt and water pump waiting to be done.
Thanks for all the inputs.

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Alloy wheels

2018-07-11 Thread hansdefau...@hetnet.nl
Martin,
I have the same weels but in 14”
On the inside of the wheels you should have a black plastic ring.
If you lose it – as I did many years ago – the weels will not sit exactly
in the middle of the hub/drum and it will wobble.
It sometimes sticks to the hub/drum. take a good look.
These black plastic rings were/are no longer available – I got a pair of pink
replacements. not the correct size but it works if you put that ring on a rear
wheel.
TSW wheels as far as I can Remember.
I have to go through a pile of papers if you want more info.

Onderwerp : [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Alloy wheels
Afternoon folks. I am a new contributor here so please be patient with me! I
have had a 2+2 (No. 340) for the last 15 years which has been used fairly
regularly (on and off) for most of that time, but only now am I beginning to
give it a little overdue TLC. The last month has seen camshaft oil seal, cam
belt, front discs and pads, general fittings and fixings and reattachment of
pipes under the car.

I am frustrated by the wheels though. They were on the car when I got it
(really? Doh!) and one of the hub covers is odd, another missing. I have seen
other 2+2s sporting very similar, if not the same, wheels but I cannot find out
where they came from or who made them. The only identifier on the rim is KBA
44044 and searches do not seem to bring up anything meaningful. I am wondering
if this is an old Ford wheel.

I have long suffered wheel wobble at about 60 mph and two tyre shops told me
they couldn't balance the wheels, which I thought strange. Perhaps they didn't
like my haircut. I am considering spending a load of cash I haven't got on new
wheels and tyres that I might not need. I am lucky to have access to the motor
vehicle workshops at the college I work at and was given a very quick lesson in
wheel balancing yesterday (10/07). Suffice to say and miraculously, no
wobbles. I can even get the car on a rolling roadnow to tune it up - without
the car jumping off which happened before.

So, attached is a picture of the wheels in question with the correct centre
cover in place. Does anyone have spare covers or know where I might be able to
get some?

  Thanks.

  Martin

As Jim says re wheel bolts. An alternative (which I used) is to get the hubs
machined to remove the threads/make the holes slightly larger and fit wheel
studs (ISTR they were Focus ones) of the correct length, and then use the
correct nuts for the new alloy wheels. I think mine wheels (1999 Fiesta) were
ET 39, and the 'danger' zone is the clearance at the trailing arms on the rear
suspension (and sideways movement cause by the panhard rod)

The 5.5J and 6J are the width of the wheel rim in inches.
You also need to look at the ET, the offset.
Ford standard for the Mk2 Fiesta is ET35, you can vary it a bit though.
But the wider you go on the rims the more important the actual offset becomes.

Make sure the new rims are specifically for the Mk1/Mk2 Fiesta, after that
Ford switched from wheel bolts to wheel nuts.
The bolts had a smaller seat size so if you use the later wheels with the
earlier bolts there is hardly anything holding the wheels on and the bolts can
pull through the wheels.
You can get round this by using special larger bolts or adaptor washers that
fit under the existing bolts.

Grateful for the comments left, I forgot to say that the rims are 13"
diameter currently fitted with 165x70x13 tyres (not one of which is the same as
the others).

I've been looking at WheelBase for alternatives. Not sure what 5.5J and 6J
means but if I do replace the wheels I think it will be with 14" rims and
185x55x14 tyres, they should fit within the wheel arches and not foul
suspension struts or body.

Thanks for your help!

I've been looking at WheelBase for alternatives. Not sure what 5.5J and 6J
means but if I do replace the wheels I think it will be with 14" rims and
185x55x14 tyres, they should fit within the wheel arches and not foul
suspension struts or body.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks Jim.

No other numbers or markings on the wheels themselves. Profile of the rims
is fine, nice and flat inside and evidence of previous weights being
fitted. The profile was one of the default settings on the machine I used
to balance them - showing me where to place the new weights on inside and
outside of the rim.

You are right. It must have been the haircut.

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Alloy wheels

2018-07-11 Thread Jim Hearne
Hi Martin,
I’m pretty sure they aren’t original Ford wheels, i don’t recognise them.
If they were they would have the Ford logo and Ford part number cast into them
somewhere.
Any more numbers under the centre cap ?
Original Quantum in Stourbridge used to sell various aftermarket wheels, i have
some old Quantum price lists that might mention what makes they were.

One thought on the tyre shops not being able to balance them, is there no flat
area on the inside where they could use stick on weights and maybe the rim
profile stopped them putting on clip on weights.
Otherwise, maybe it was your haircut

removed - not enough room to get it out.  After lots of foul language and
thumping around, the solution was to remove the front engine mount only and
lower the engine enough to clear the subframe - at its lowest point, there was
just enough room to remove the pulley - less than 1mm.  I found that I was
raising and lowering the engine many times to get "comfortable access" to the
areas needed.  Picture below shows the challenge.
