In version 4 of Qubes, the Debian templates need a little extra software to run
as templates for the sys-XXX Qubes. Best to is to pieced as if for the minimal
Debian template, and apt-install what's needed for the three sys-XXX Qubes.

In my view, and this is purely personal, there is a slightly more coherent
feel to working under Debian templates anyway. In part that is because even
the full Debian template is less filled out than the fedora one, so that
I had problems with the trackpad on the install of R 4.0 over a year ago, and
occasional trackpad hangs when Dom0 was busy. My guess at the time was that
this was due to running Qubes on only 4gb ram.
So, still on an Asus 360 but now with 8gb ram, I was shocked to find that there

I have found problems with touchpad during installs of Qubes on various laptops

Booting into recent install of Qubes 4.0.1 I have just realised I have not been
setting the grub2 menu: it goes right in to loading Xen and then I see the four
Tuxes. Is this an EFI thing, or a new feature of this version?
(I ask because as well as changing Qubes versions I've finally got EFI

and others didn't. Notably sys-usb stops recognising any USB device, and
sys-net doesn't recognise WiFi.

Debian 10 template and there are clear instructions for how to install, but
that Q 4.0.1 still uses Debian 9.
Am I right in thinking that the template from the newer version of Debian
should just work with VMs

Now I am wondering the best way to set up swap. The Debian installer created
swap for me, but of course this is getting wiped by Qubes between reboots.

I am also considering installing a standalone VM that is command-line only.
Once running I realise I can SSH into it from another VM (after appropriate
firewall settings). But during installation, how would I see and respond to
console output and input?

I do not want my laptop to boot up and immediately look for a network

Therefore I set sys-net and sys-firewall NOT to start at boot.
