[qubes-users] What is the purpose of sys-firewall..?

2016-09-24 Thread neilhardley
What is the purpose of sys-firewall..?

I noticed that every App VM has its own "Firewall Rules" inside of VM Settings.

So therefore, what is the purpose of sys-firewall..?

Thanks

[qubes-users] Why are Ethernet and WiFi in sys-net..?

2016-09-24 Thread neilhardley
Simple question: Why are Ethernet and WiFi in sys-net..?

Is it

(A) Just for easy access to the same network for all App VMs..?

(B) Because this is isolating Ethernet and WiFi from the rest of the system, to
stop DMA attacks..?

It's not clear to me whether the VT-D protection is occurring because you are
putting these devices in sys-net.

Or whether the VT-D is implemented regardless of which VM the Wifi/Ethernet are
in.

I ask this because I want to run some programs in sys-net, and wonder whether a
DMA attack could screw up these programs.

Thanks

Split GPG does not work with Fedora 24. I upgraded my fedora-23 minimal gpg
template to Fedora 24 and I just get:

[user@personal ~]$ qubes-gpg-client -K
/bin/sh: /etc/qubes-rpc/qubes.Gpg: No such file or directory
EOF

It doesn't do the second prompt to allow access for the 300 seconds at all.
What would cause this?

Have you tried using the grub boot menu to select another kernel
version? You can also adjust some kernel parameters there by pressing 'e'.

Does your x1 have an option for legacy boot instead of UEFI? That may
work better.

[qubes-users] 4th gen X1 Carbon graphics issues

2016-09-24 Thread jpo
I'm on a 4th-gen x1 carbon (HCLs with stock 3.1 and updated 3.1 attached, -s
output for each available privately upon request) and have been having a really
rough time trying to get graphics to a usable state.

I tried to install with the R3.2-rc3 and R3.2-rc2 installers - both installers
booted and installed to completion, but neither resulting system booted.

R3.1 with 4.1.x kernels "work" but with graphics problems on resume which
render the system completely unusable (entire screen is rainbow stripes).

A 3.1 system updated to xen 4.6.1 and linux 4.4.10-0 from testing-unstable
ceases to boot.

The theory is that 4.4 kernels may have better support, but I've spent a few
days now trying to get one to boot in dom0 with no success so far. When
selecting the disk in the bios boot-device menu, the screen goes black for a
second and then returns to the selection menu.

Interestingly, after updating and having booting break, changing the default=
section of EFI/qubes/xen.cfg from the 4.4 kernel section back to the 4.1 kernel
section does not make it boot again. Setting noreboot in xen.cfg options= has
no apparent effect.

Relevant threads:
- https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/qubes-users/IllB1PaX5tA/-YA1-h59AwAJ
- https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/ttStZXy_PPY
- https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/UXP8RJffpsY
and a few others I can't find again right now.

I suppose the next thing I will try is to reinstall again (because I can't seem
to figure out how to tell the boot process to revert to trying an older kernel)
and see if adding the i915 firmware to the 4.1 initramfs has any effect (I
confirmed they are only present in the 4.4 initramfs).

I know little about UEFI and xen, and am out of ideas of how to proceed in
debugging this since I have no visibility into or intuition about what is going
on. Any suggestions welcome. I've wasted several days blindly stumbling about
trying to get this working.

Thanks,
Jean-Philippe

Okay I have now installed Qubes OS on my work PC which also supports VT-d :),
so I had a chance to look into this more deeply.

I see that EncFS is old and maybe not fully secure. Unfortunately there don't
seem to be good alternatives. Also the vulnerability primarily focuses on
manipulation, not decryption. Since I only push to Dropbox, but dont fetch
anything, this is unlikely to be a problem. Also the data I am pushing is not
that important. It's personal but I am not a dissendent or something, so I
don't "really" have anything to hide. I don't think EncFS is a security hole,
unless some state sponsored actor really takes a liking to you... They would
also need to have access to dropbox in the first place, which isn't easy. I
actually trust Dropbox enough that I don't believe they will go trough the
trouble of breaking my EncFS encryption ^^. Like... What for? I doubt I am on
any NSA list yet... Well on the list you get on for googling Snowden and
downloading Qubes OS, okay, but that's probably a list with millions of entries
;).

I tried the block-device approach, it doesn't work. Dropbox can sync only the
"changed" blocks, yes, but for that it needs to scan the entire 200 GB file for
changed blocks which is a freaking nightmare, power-consumption wise...

So my current setup is:

1) Dropbox VM: Runs dropbox and keeps a local copy of 200 GB EncFS files (only
encrypted)
2) Vault VM: No internet connection. Has a plaintext copy of the 200GB EncFS
files.

Now I just mount the Vault VM's loopback device with the encrypted EncFS files
inside the dropbox VM and issue an rsync command to update the dropbox VM's
local copy. Then dropbox will updated the changed files...

Not exactly as smooth as I expected but I guess that's the price you have to
pay for maximum security ;)

You can run the tool from terminal to get more info.

It support any Unix based AppVM (tested at Fedora) to upload screenshots

At the second step you will see "select AppVM" dialog for networking. If

Are you also stopping then starting the vm that's running Chrome? If

If the problem hinges on stopping/starting, then Chrome may be storing

Hey, I just noticed that the screenshot utility supposedly supports imgur.
How does it do that from dom0? Similar to qubes-dom0-update, and use the
firewall or other VM to do the networking?

When I tried it, I just got an error that it couldn't transfer to imgur.
Is this not supported in dom0, or is there something misconfigured at my
end?

(I don't have dispvm's enabled, for memory conservation reasons; would
that be relevant?)

Cheers

I've upgraded my fedora-23 template to fedora-24 based on another thread here
since it's not official yet. It seems all packages to do with i3 including
dmenu are still fc23 packages? Why is that?

Additionally, with dmenu 4.5 that's packaged.. I haven't been able to change
the font or the font size. Any luck?

This is not spam, however this is against riseup's rules.

Riseup users are not supposed to invite people they don't know personally.

If it is only secure e-mail you need, and you are in an emergency, then
I'd recommend protonmail. For less secure needs, I'd recommend openmailbox.

New version of Qubes Screenshot tool available.

https://github.com/evadogstar/qvm-screenshot-tool

If you do not know what is it: a tool to easy make screenshots and
upload them to the AppVM and to the web ( imgurl service ).

Changelog:
- Now, it's possible to re-open imgurl uploaded dialog again, if it was
closed. I found that it's very useful at the daily use to get uploaded
url again.
- "Ksnapshot" removed from the menu if it's not available at the system
(because of Qubes XFCE migration and KDE not available now by default)

Hi
I'm sorry but I personally dont think its ethical to vouch for a
complete stranger. Especially as you do not appear to have a record on
this forum.
Might I suggest you apply to riseup via their website stating why you
think you deserve an account. They usually grant one after about a week
or so.
Good luck

[qubes-users] no keyboard after installing Qubes Windows tools

2016-09-24 Thread Achim Patzner
Hi!

With installation of all of the Qubes Windows 3.2.1.3 tools in my
Windows HVMs the display driver is working now but I've got the strange
effect that I cannot log in anymore as there is apparently (is there any
way to check it without logging i?) no keyboard input coming in (even
starting the on-screen keyboard using the mouse will help); at least I'm
unable to send alt-ctrl-delete. Running the VM in safe mode is
permitting me to log in, though. Did I miss something?

Re: [qubes-users] 3.0 to 3.1 in place upgrade broke USB VMs

2016-09-24 Thread 'Vincent Adultman' via qubes-users
Apologies, this appears to be the shared RMRR problem discussed in
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1544

This is indeed in the FAQ, but I was thrown by the doc at
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/user-faq/#i-created-a-usbvm-and-assigned-usb-controllers-to-it-now-the-usbvm-wont-boot

stating the problem began in R3.0, when by this experience it actually seems to
have been introduced in R3.1 xen 4.6?. Pity as it was nice having USB ports and
built-in USB devices in separate VMs. Although I guess it's for the best, as I
was relying on the reset ability which apparently wasn't supported by the
hardware...

In any case, worth a note on https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/upgrade-to-r3.1/ page?

Solved
Instead of using command sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade - which always fails. Use the shortened command sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade - it worked a treat!
