Re: [qubes-users] Can't access the net via my VpnVM now? (could before)

2017-07-16 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
Thanks again.

I did it according to the docs.

It shows me a bunch of info, not totally sure what I am looking for, the
most obvious error is:

Sun Jul 16 21:16:22 2017 us=614593 RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address:
vpnprovidermod'dname.com: No address associated with hostname

I changed the vpn host part but the "can't resolve the host address" seems
to be pretty important no?

Problem is, I have no idea why? I would think maybe the firewallVM is
blocking something (as I have AppVM->VpnVM->firewallVM->net-sys) but if I
point my appvms directly to firewallvm they are able to connect no problem
so that would indicate the firewallvm is ok... right?

I should totally know what the "address space" is but I am afraid I don't.

Is that the gateway address or modem's ip address?

I didn't look at the openvpn log, sorry but where would that be (in my
VpnVM I know but where there I am less sure).

I def do not get the usual VPN connected popup

I am not able to ping any ip addresses from a appvm using the vpnvm

[qubes-users] Can't access the net via my VpnVM now? (could before)

2017-07-16 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I can't figure this one out. two things are indeed different, I am on a new
ISP using a new modem and when I try to use my VpnVM I can't access the
Internet (or local LAN for that matter) _however_ I am able to access the
Internet on the same computer if I connect only using the firewallVM.
Strangely enough, I am able to connect to the net using the same VPN
provider installed on an iphone with the VPN provider software, and on an
android using OpenVPN... I am stumped because on other networks I am able
to connect to the Internet through my VpnVM no problem?!

I had originally contacted my ISP but of course they said it was the VPN
providers fault, I was then going to try to contact the modem/router
manufacturer but while waiting (forever) I figured out vpn access was
working on my phones.

Any help/thoughts would _*really*_ be appreciated.

[qubes-users] VPN Disconnects when Qubes goes to sleep (and does not reconnect when coming out of sleep)?

2017-06-12 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I have sucessfully setup a VpnVM that is working nicely, if the computer
doesn't go to sleep, but if it goes to sleep or I close the lid (notebook)
etc then when I open it back up it does not automatically reconnect? The
wifi reconnects and I can use VMs that aren't connecting to the net via the
VPN (ie just through the firewall) but I have to restart the VpnVM to use
the VMs that are using the VpnVM.
Thoughts?

[qubes-users] Can't import keys into templates?

2017-06-08 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I am not sure I used to right terminology but I wanted to install the
"Brave" browser which does not seem to be available in the repositories. I
have tried adding brave to my deb and fed templates, per thier instructions
,
but get errors at the points when I try to import/add keys? For example
when I try in deb this:
curl https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/brave-apt-staging/keys.asc | sudo
apt-key add -
it tells me it can't find the keys and ends up putting the help page for
apt-key into the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-*.list file
in fed when I type:
sudo rpm --import
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/brave-rpm-release/keys.asc
I get an error:
curl: (6) Could not resolve host: s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com
error: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/brave-rpm-release/keys.asc:
import read failed(2).

I have occasionally had other "connection" type issues like when I tried
configuring a default FF setup complete with addons but FF could not access
the web nor addons.

...

now that I think about it, are the templates setup to only be able to
access the deb/fed repositories? That just occurred to me, I am still
posting this as even if that is the case I'd like to know how to install
something like brave (as it seems to be the "best" bet for chromium like
sec with better than chromium privacy)(I hope).

Thx!!!

Re: [qubes-users] Can "see" but not access secondary storage?

2017-05-28 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
Thanx for that.

Strange thing now.

I tried looking at it with fdisk as suggested, though xvdi is no longer
there? Can't figure out why, anyway, when I go to attach/detach block
devices I now see:
md126p5
md126

They are both also accessible via fdisk but what is bugging me is that I
have these two disks setup via hardware RAID? shouldn't they show up as one
disk? Since I don't have any data on these disks I tried partitioning one
so now I have this when I print the part table:

Disk /dev/md126: 1.8 TiB, 2000381018112 bytes, 3906994176 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x89e5c39e

Device Boot StartEndSectors Size Id Type
/dev/md126p1 16065 3907024064 3907008000 1.8T f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/md126p5 16128 3907024064 3907007937 1.8T 83 Linux

I appologise as this is perhaps getting into non-qubes territory but help
would be apprecaited (as the uplimate goal is making this RAID1 setup
available to some of my larger appVMs and local backups).

Thanks in advance (again!)

[qubes-users] Swap space and reducing memory usage?

2017-05-20 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I have a 16gb mem system which can't be upgraded any further to my
knwoledge. I had thought this would be enough but I am running into memory
errors more often than I would like. I admittedly open maybe 7-12 appvms so
the obvious answer to my prob might be open less appvms but for my workflow
that would be inconvient. I do not remember setting up a swap space during
setup but I think it was set up automatically though in the dom0 system
monitor plugin the swap space monitor never seems to move (stays at zero).

My questions are two fold I guess:

   1. Are there any recomended ways for reducing memory usage?
   2. How can I tell if swap is being used?
   3. If swap is not being used how can I enable it?

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure I 100% follow you (noobness). Other
devices do show up, here is what I got:

[user@personal ~]$ cd /dev/
[user@personal dev]$ ls xvd*
xvda xvdb xvdc xvdc1 xvdc2 xvdd xvdi

Do you mean like xvdi1 xvdi2 etc?

As for template, sorry about that, I have tried both the fedora-24 and
debian-9 templates (the above is output from a fed appvm)

I generally got mounting partitions but that does lead me to two questions:
#1 I assume I need to see more than just xvdi? (like partition numbers like
i do for xvdc?)
#2 would I have to manually mount it on each appvm everytime I want to use
it? (perhaps not a huge deal as I eventually want to have it permantly used
by 2-3appvms and no others so I assume that would involve some fstab
tinkering?)

I tried to rename my anon-whonix appvm through the qubes-manager, right
click, vm settings, name & label. This worked fine for other appvms but
this time it didn't seem to change the name. Strangely it did change the
private storage to 0mb and now when I try to change the mem to something
else I get:

ERROR: Basic tab:
[Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/var/lib/qubes/appvms/anon-whonix/private.img'

Or to change the vm name (which still shows up as "anon-whonix") I get:

ERROR: Basic tab:
[Errno 2] No such file or directory

I looked in /var/lib/qubes/appvms/ and the anon-whonix-renamed dir is there
as I think it should be but the qubes manager doesn't seem to know this. I
tried restarting qubes (simple reboot) and that didn't work. So I am now
not quite sure where to go from here?

Thoughts? Thx.

[qubes-users] Can "see" but not access secondary storage?

2017-05-15 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I managed (with help from qubes-users) to setup secondary storage on
another computer but I am having trouble with my current computer.

It (they) are two drives setup with hardware raid, I partd/formated (ext4)
them as one raid drive which seemd to go ok. Qubes "sees" it, actually it
saw both drives for awhile but now only sees one (don't know what I did
there) but now when I try to attach it, it qubes vm manager shows it
attached but it doesn't seem to be accessible from things like nautilus? I
assume I just need to partition/setup as lvm/encrupt or something like that
but am unsure how to go about it correctly? I'd be happy to post some logs
or something but am not sure where to go to get them?

[qubes-users] Re: Windows hanging at starting up screen (changing xen video -> cirrus not working?)

2017-05-06 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
No responses? Is there any more information that I could post that might
make it easier to diagnose this issue?

For what its worth, I was able to make a non-template winVM on another
computer (before I quite understood that I could make a WinTemplate) and
then restored it onto my current computer and it works well enough, but I
really think the best model for me would be using a wintemplate if
possible, and was hoping to figure out why the intstalling win7 on this
win7-x64-template isn't working?

Thoughts would be apprecaited.

[qubes-users] A way to restart VpnVM same as can reload/restart tor?

2017-05-05 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I have issues with my VPN connection dropping, or not starting back up when
my laptop comes out of sleep. I have had to resort to restarting the VPN
but its of course not as simple as restarting the VpnVM (I don't think?).
After some reading I added a line to my openvpn-client.ovpn:

resolv-retry infinite

but that doesn't seem to help the problem. Is there a way to restart
OpenVPN in the VpnVM with a command instead of haveing to either shutdown
or switch all VMs that are using the VpnVM (as a netvm), then restarting
the VpnVM (kind of a pain).

Thx

[qubes-users] Experiencing intermittent hangs?

2017-05-05 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I seem to be experiencing intermittent/temporary (few secs-min) hangs
on/between VMs. That is, I can be working on an app in one VM, it will
begin to hang, to I usually switch to another VM and work on that for a min
or two then come back to the hung VM and it seems to work again. While this
is happening in _many_ applications, it seems to be an issue more with
chromium. I was thinking this might be related to memory as I am also
getting errors about not having enough mem to open up a VM (so I usually
close a VM or two then I can)(for the record I have the max my laptop will
take, 16gb, the default Qubes install doesn't include swap space does it?)

Anyway, thoughts on this would be appreciated as its really not helping my
workflow.

Thanks for the reply!

my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list is a bit different than yours,
really I was most interested in it handling http/https

text/html=open_work_vm.desktop
x-scheme-handler/http=open_work_vm.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=open_work_vm.desktop
x-scheme-handler/about=open_work_vm.desktop
x-scheme-handler/unknown=open_work_vm.desktop

I tried just copying/pasting yours into mine (just for kicks) but that
didn't work either :(

[qubes-users] Right click+scroll to switch workspaces?

2017-04-29 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
Quite awhile ago (in win) I had an app that created workspaces like most
lin win-managers have but it also had a really niffty shortcut where one
could (anywhere on the screen) ricgh click and scroll to switch work
spaces. I can't remember the app (guess its kind of irrelevant) but have
been digging around in xfce trying to figure out if doing the same thing is
possible. I know that one can press ctrl+F? keys, or place the mouse over
the workspaces and scroll but I haven't figured out how to achive the rght
click+scroll for workspaces.

If this is purely an xfce thing I can repost in a xfce forum but I thought
that the VM nature of qubes might changes things a bit (like if I have my
mouse hovering over an appvm instead of dom0?) please do let me know.

Thx!

[qubes-users] How to autostart programs upon AppVM startup?

2017-04-28 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I would like a program to start up when the appvm starts. I tried putting
it in the .bashrc but that didn't work. Is there another place I should add
the program to ensure that it starts when the appvm starts?

[qubes-users] cp/mv from win7VM to other VMs?

2017-04-28 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
Appologies if this is obvious but I only saw it was "possible" in the docs
and assumed that I would have the option to cp/mv to another AppVM in the
context menu but it seems that I don't have that in my win7VM? I believe I
went through the windows tools installation correctly, and I can cp/mv
things *into* my win7VM just not out of... am I missing something?

[qubes-users] Can't access windows shares?

2017-04-28 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
On a previous installation of qubes I was able to access my server with
little problem by just going into nautlius and for "other locations" typing
in the "connect to server" box: smb:\\servername\

I had to reinstall and most things have gone fine but an exception is
connecting to my server, now when I try the above I get:

"Unable to access location" Failed ot retrieve share list from server:
connection refused

I did get this problem with AppVMs using my VPN but now it seems that
sometimes it works sometimes not (using the firewallVM).

So I am #1 Unsure what is causing the occasional non-connection to my
server and #2 wondering if there is a way to set up my AppVMs to be able to
access my local server even when they are using my VpnVM

[qubes-users] Not using firewall rules correctly?

2017-04-28 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I thought I would make use of Qubes firewall feature and try blocking some
sites. I 1st tried in the firewallVM -> settings -> firewall rules and
added some sites, doubleclick.net for example

I closed it etc then went back to it and saw this error:

The sys-firewall AppVM is not network connected to a FirewallVM
You may edit the sys-firewall VM firewall rules but these will not take
effect until you connect it to a working firewallVM

?? I was editing the rules in the sys-firewall VM so I am not sure about
that, unless perhaps because I have a VPN running? (the the VPN is behind
not infront of the firewall).

I tried the same setup/rules but instead of in the sys-firewall VM i tried
it in my personalVM and while i didn't get an error there, it also didn't
seem to block sites like doubleclick.net?

I assume I am doing something wrong but am not sure what as I thought I was
doing as the qubes firewall doc instructed?

[qubes-users] Entroware.com orion laptop?

Has anyone tried Entroware's Orion (Ubuntu) laptop?

I saw an article
on
it earlier (not sure about the mac book pro alt part but still impressed)
and checked it out. I thought it was a pretty darn good deal (32gb mem/
skylake proc/500gb ssd/14") for less than $700 USD I think, problem is they
don't *seem* to ship to the US? Anyway, still wasn't sure about
compatibility, anyone tried them out?

You probably don't need to bother with cronjobs etc. If you have pix (that you
trust) you can put them in dom0 then use "Desktop" (System tools > Desktop) in
XFCE and it has an option to "change background" and gives interval options
(min/hours/chon/etc) and supports multiple monitors as well (so you could have
2 diff wallpapers on two different monitors at the same time).

[qubes-users] HCL Suggestions?

2017-02-03 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
First, these are just a few suggestions, I really appreciate the HCL as it
helped me select a very functional computer that worked with Qubes "out of
the box".

Despite the HCL being helpful I wonder if it possible to add some
additional functionality to it? "That One Privacy Site" has a very useful
table that can be sorted in a variety of ways, something like this for the
HCL would really be useful. Also It seems people have asked fairly often
about ideal notebooks and asked about memory, weight, age (year released?)
etc Adding a field for these things (mem tested with, and max mem) could be
quite useful for those wanting for find say the lightest notebook that is
working with 3.2 (for example).

These are just thoughts, but as I am hoping to get another computer in the
next year or so I tend to refer to the HCL to see if its been updated and
compare computers etc.

Just my two cents.

Sorry yes, mentioning MP's use of a phone here was perhaps a bit tangential but
as he seems to be a fairly well respected sec/priv person and uses an
external/mobile router (a model that I thought could be applied to my Qubes
opsec useage if it was applicable/made-sense) I thought I'd ask.

Anyway, according to Chris it seems that its a bit moot as I think he confirmed
that Qubes separate firewall and net VMs kind of serve the same purpose?

[qubes-users] Advantage of connecting through a mobile router in public?

2017-01-31 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I keep reading examples where people are using something like mobile
routers between thier phone/computer and public wifi spots, example like
the blackholecloud device or apparently Mike
Perry of the tor project told arstechnica
that
"He suggests leaving the prototype in airplane mode and connecting to the
Internet through a second, less-trusted phone, or a cheap Wi-Fi cell
router."

Are Qubes separate firewall and net (and whonix gw) VMs serving the same
purpose? If not how is what blackholecloud and what MP are doing improving
thier priv/sec?

[qubes-users] Encrypted Secondary Drive? (is it? Is it needed?)

2016-11-09 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I installed a secondary drive on my computer a few weeks back then got
sidetracked but now I am having space issues so need to move some things
over to that drive.

The thing is I don't remember it being encrypted at any point which made me
think:
1) Is it encrypted?
2) Does it need to be encrypted?

If its not, and it should be (ie good practice) is there a doc for that? I
looked over the docs section, and poked around in general but didn't find
much info?

[qubes-users] Finding smb mount points in deb vm?

2016-11-08 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
I wasn't sure if this was a purely deb question or not so thought I'd post
here to be sure (apologies if I am wrong). I was able to connect using smb
to my server via a redhat vm and nautilus then went to a term, typed mount,
and could see where the mount point was exactly (like
/run/user/1000/gvfs/???//) but when I try to do the same thing in a deb
vm it mounts fine in nautilus but then the mount only shows up to
/run/user/1000 and when I look in the gvfs dir its empty, there is nothing
in there hidden or otherwise). I wasn't sure why in RH there was a mounted
dir in the gvfs subdir and nada in the gvfs subdir on the deb vm?

I have an app that does not let me put in a full path but I have to click
through a tree so I'd really like to find where the mount point is.

[qubes-users] Possible to run a launcher (like Synapse) in Qubes?

2016-10-14 Thread Gaiko Kyofusho
given qubes separation is it possible to run something like Synapse (or
some similar launcher) in Qubes?

It would be awesome to have times that one could say start typing the VM
Name then start typing the app .

For those of use using Qubes on a laptop with a miserable touchpad a proper
launcher is sorely missed.
