Yes it's about locales. I had this problem and I had to change it to en_US
instead of C from what I remember.

[qubes-users] i3 | dmenu | unable to open applications

2020-03-01 Thread stefan . hofer

I am testing the i3 windows manager on 4.19.100-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64.
I've installed it according to https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/,
including i3-settings-qubes.
Whenever I invoke dmenu (Mod+d) and start typing in order to search for
an application, dmenu just disappears.

I've observed that behavior also on a freshly installed qubes4 system.

Any thoughts on getting it to work? Thanks!

I too use i3 and couldn't be happier with it, however it is somewhat
of a bare-bones environment. You will be dealing with config files and
CLI.

So judging by your sentence above, I am not sure i3 is really the
direction you want to go.

[qubes-users] i3 support?

2019-03-23 Thread Stumpy
I have been considering looking into i3 on my qubes box but was
wondering about support in the future. As there appears to be a bit of a
learning curve i wanted to check before diving in.

w/ v3 i was using kde then, as support seemed to wan, i switched over to
xfce which is admittedly lighter but doest seem to be as feature rich.

is there any "official" stance on i3 now and going on into the future?

I don't quite understand what do you mean by "it doesn't display applications
from a DispVM". I can see all DispVM apps on i3-dmenu-desktop, are you
typing/searching using correct DispVM name?

I was just giving i3 a try as window manager and stumbled across a minor issue
with i3-dmenu-desktop. For some reason, it doesn't display applications from a
DispVM. When looking at all the *.desktop files under the user's home directory
in dom0, I also didn't find anything that corresponding to apps in DispVM.

Any suggestion how this could be fixed?

It seems that the i3 window manager has been in the testing repository for a

problems associated to the i3 window manager.

Anything else required to make this package stable or when it can be moved to

[qubes-users] i3 under Qubes 4 RC3

2018-01-25 Thread aaq via qubes-users
Hey all,

I installed i3 when first set up my machine, but I can't seem to get it
working..

Has anyone else experienced issues with i3?

In my case, no applets are shown in the bar and I cannot start any programs
from VM's (any VM).

If I run qvm-ls, it shows that VM's are running, and if I try to do somethings
like qvm-run firefox, my CPU responds.

Just a peculiar issue, but makes i3 unusable for me nonetheless..

Any feedback appreciated :)

Cheers!

Re: [qubes-users] i3: Help auto-moving Qubes Manager to another Workspace (SOLVED)

2017-10-04 Thread 'One7two99' via qubes-users
Hello,

after a lot of trial and error I found out that the following line in
~/.config/i3/config will auto-move the Qubes Manager window to another
workspace:
assign [class="Qubes-manager"] $workspace10

Using the 2nd value from the WM_CLASS(STRING) which I got using xprop and
clicking into the qubes window did the trick.

WM_CLASS(STRING) = "qubes-manager", "Qubes-manager"

Strange behaviour:
The Qubes window will only automove to the workspace when it is opened via
right click on the Qubes Manager icon and the choosing "Open VM Manager". If
you double left click on the icon it will open in you workspace which is
currently active.
I've checked the WM_CLASS(STRING) with xprop but it is exactly the same like
when open the window via right click and "Open VM Manager".

[qubes-users] i3: Help auto-moving Qubes Manager to another Workspace (assign [class=...)

2017-10-03 Thread 'One7two99' via qubes-users
Hello,

I'm trying to move my Qubes Manager automatically to workspace 10 in i3.
I've added the following lines in my ~/.config/i3/config
assign [class="win7"] $workspace3
which will move my windows HVM after starting it to my workspace3.

I've tried to use the same method to move Qubes Manager:
assign [class="qubes-manager"] $workspace3

But it doesn't work, Qubes Manager will always stay on the current workspace I
am using or on workspace 1 after login.

I've used xprop and clicked on the Qubes Manager windows (not the outer window
border) and got the following information:
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "qubes-manager", "Qubes-manager"

Why are other windows moved to a workspace with the assign setting in i3, but
not the qubes-manager window?

Re: [qubes-users] i3 not working on two screens

2017-07-15 Thread Alex
Late to the party, but I remember having had trouble with my 6 monitor
configuration and i3. Alas I cannot remember if the switch to i3 was
related to the problems, but after many days of struggle I solved it
with a shell script that calls xrandr 6 times in order to get things fixed.

I set it to be executed by i3 on startup, because xorg.conf is way
beyond my humble brain to understand.

You can use xrandr to set up the different display outputs.

For example, the following command defines my external display (VGA1) as
being positioned to the right of my internal display (LVDS1):

$ xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of LVDS1 --preferred

To get the names of your display outputs, run xrandr without flags:

$ xrandr

It's a bit unclear whether or not you are using XFCE or i3wm as your
window manager, but the xrandr method should be effective in either
case.

Another solution is to set up your xorg.conf properly, so your desired
display outputs are configured when X starts, before any window manager
is run.

Here is an example config for a Thinkpad X220:

Section "Device"
# Specify the device we are configuring
Identifier "Intel HD 3000"
Driver "intel"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0" # Video card PCI address

# Give friendly names to the display outputs
Option "Monitor-LVDS1" "LCD"
Option "Monitor-VGA1" "VGA"
EndSection

# Internal monitor (LVDS1)
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "LCD"
Option "Enable" "true"
Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768"
EndSection

# External monitor (VGA1)
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "VGA"
Option "Enable" "true"
Option "PreferredMode" "1680x1050" # Acer AL2216W
Option "RightOf" "LCD"
EndSection

This config has the same effect as the xrandr example shown before -
external display output VGA1 positioned to the right of LVDS1.

You can put the file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and it will be read by X on
next start.

Use the "Enable" option to specify whether you want it to activate on X
start, or manually (via xrandr). See the documentation for X.org and the
graphics driver you are using for more options.

NOTE: You probably have to replace some/all values to fit your specific
scenario. Obviously the "Device" section (first paragraph) of the
xorg.conf in particular, but also the xrandr parameters.

Yes, by "separating them" i mean to extend the desktop to two screens, since
now I see them mirrored (i.e. the eternal one is a copy of the laptop's display)

I adopted the solution listed here, but with no success at all (it just
changed the border of the windows in i3)

Are the monitors showing the same image, and you want to have two

[qubes-users] i3 not working on two screens

2017-07-13 Thread zioasterbald
Hi,
I've just tried i3 on qubes3.2 but there is an issue with my external monitor.
I cannot separate them, even when I split and dispose properly the screen in
the settings, as you can see in the image. The screens did not even refresh.

http://imgur.com/a/7jtvI

I remember I didn't had this problem with qubes 3.1. Going into system-settings
and selecting display would effectively apply the settings and split my desktop
in two screen.

Maybe I'm not calling the correct app, as I don't remember of having xfce in
the previous 3.1 qubes.

Thanks!

[qubes-users] i3 current state 2017 on Qubes 3.2

2017-04-09 Thread Eva Star

Hello,

I tried to install i3 windows manager from current Qubes repository (non
testing) and i3-settings-qubes package (before i3 started first time).

And I have problems :
- i3 wizard manager start, although i3-settins-qubes packed already on
the system (is it correct behavior?)

- Qubes VM-to-VM copy/paste key combinations does not work.
- Right mouse key on the firefox (and other applications does not work).
:( And how to use firefox without right mouse key on i3?
- After some testing (clicking :) ) on next re-login i3 die: On the
bottom of the screen it say that missing some dependence.

[qubes-users] i3

2016-09-22 Thread jd . schroeder
Regarding 4. When this happens, I launch "network connections" in sys-net to
bring the icon back. I usually need to do this on starting a new session.

Other than that, I just use dmenu. You can set applications in the VM manager,
and they show up in dmenu with the VM name prefixed. This way i can, for
example, launch keepassx on vault by typing something equivalent to "vaul kee"

I rarely start/stop VMs manually. The VM manager seems to handle it
automatically well enough.

[qubes-users] i3

2016-09-19 Thread Jon Solworth
I'm using i3, and I like it so far better than
kde or xfce, but its definitely not the window
manager to start using qubes with.

I have some questions

1. https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/ is very helpful,
but I'm a bit confused by the configuration instructions
at the bottom. It says to install a script qubes_autostart_xdg.sh
   but it doesn't say
 (a) in which domain
 (b) in which directory
 (c) what filename should be used
(It would also be helpful to know what the script is needed for)

2. What should I use to launch individual applications from the status
bar (e.g., keypassx or firefox)? I'll make key bindings for some,
but I'll want others on the bar. These are security sensitive,
aren't they, since they run in dom0?

3. Is there a recommended way of bringing up VMs? I'm using qvm-start
for the VM, and .config/autostart for applications I always want to
started in the VM. Any better suggestions?

4. nm_applet seems to sometimes go away. Any suggestions?

5. I would be pleased to see other peoples config files.

thanks,
Jon

check your netVM Settings->Services tab.
Add network-manager if missing. Reboot the VM.

[qubes-users] i3-configs?

2016-06-16 Thread Niels Kobschaetzki

Hi,

does anyone have their personal i3-config publicly available for Qubes?
I like to look at other peoples config to see what they have done or how
they solved certain stuff.

[qubes-users] i3 and nm-applet

2016-06-16 Thread Niels Kobschaetzki

Hi,

I just installed i3 and the default settings delivered by the qubes-team
are already quite nice. What I am missing though is nm-applet (at least
for sys-net). I know that I can start it from dom0 via "qvm-run sys-net
nm-applet".

So I tried adding
exec --no-startup-id "qvm-run sys-net nm-applet" to my .i3/config but it
doesn't work.
I also tried
exec_always --no-startup-id "qvm-run sys-net nm-applet" to my .i3/config"
I also tried both with /usr/bin/qvm-run

I had the applet turn up once but that's it. Since then nm-applet won't
autostart even though sys-net is started.

Interestingly when I start a VM which has another ProxyVM attached for
my work VPN the nm-applet from the VPN-Proxy-VM automatically shows up.

Any ideas what the problem could be or how did others solved this?

Niels
