I lost a tire a couple years ago to a sealant called "Joes". Like Stans,
you inject it in the tube. It didn't really work and gunked up the inside
of my tire so much that I had to replace it.

I did the "just don't shift" thing for several months before removing 8 of
9 cogs. I find it more relaxing not to have the option.
I weigh 165 and usually carry 5-10 lbs in my saddlebag. I'm probably more
likely to go too heavy than too light. Right now I'm asking myself if 32
1spokes isn't ask

I do not like flats on my way to work. I used to run Marathon Pluses, and
upgraded to 35mm Supremes when I got my Riv 3 years ago. Last year I got a
flat and replaced the rear tube with a Slime tube.
I have avoided better performing tires so far because the occasional flat
is not something I wan
ut I wouldn't mind
something a bit more "sprightly"

Interesting. I too have Supremes on my Sam Hillborne. I had Marathon Pluses on
my last bike, so I'm pretty happy with them. I can't be messing with flats on
my way to work so the Supremes are staying on for a while.

Chain is 9 speed and new. Cleaning and lubing yesterday helped a lot, but
it's still noicier than I would like.

Another thing you might consider is playing around with the bar's height
and angle. Lower bars = farther reach, similar to a longer stem. It took me
a lot of trial and error to find the right combination for me.

I used mine daily on my Quickbeam for 4 years in Denver locking the bike up
to all sorts of everything without ever bending/breaking those stays. I
found it very useful for carrying oddball items that wouldn't normally fit
in a small Wald basket. I kept a bungee net attached to it most of the
bar. Reply off-list.

I've decided to build the bike back up with some Albastaches, fat tires,
and low gears. The Dura Ace triple it had on it just ain't low enough,
thus the change to the XD2.

If I understand the USPS website correctly, anything that won't fit into
one of their Priority Mail boxes is charged at a much higher rate. ~$30
assuming a shipping weight of 3 lbs.

I am very happy with a Selle Anatomica and Albas on my Sam. Bars are a bit
lower than the saddle. I'm 5'11.5" pbh 86 Sam is a 56 with an 11mm stem.

The LBS who built mine insisted on 113 (Shimano) as specified by Sugino for
the XD600 triple I used. Chain line and Q work fine for me. I'm pretty sure
110 would be fine too.

I use v-brakes on my Sam, and was never very happy with the Tektro v-brake
for road bar levers I had been using the Noodles. Albas let me use proper
v-brake levers, $20 Avids in my case, which make a huge difference. Could
be a consideration depending on what brake style you like.

Unrelated - Commuting time did increase when I fell a few weeks ago and my
saddle angle changed. I decided to keep the raised nose, but wa measurable
slower until I raised the saddle height to compensate. All better now :)

Is it possible to just leave the outer ring off altogether? Maybe using
