Thanks everyone for your help and wonderful ideas!! I decided to get a Rosco
fatty Rode. I'm excited to have a Rivendell for the future.

Carla, I'm a bit late with a reply, but I have had two Sam Hillbornes. The
first was a double TT 56cm, 2010 vintage - a tad bit too large for me. I
used it for rough touring and was satisfied. But, I sold it and bought the
beautiful black & cream 55 cm single TT and moved all components -
Late to the party... however, I just wanted to say that I've had my Sam for
7 years now and can't imagine not having it. It's been set up with drop
bars and albatross bars. It's had racks and bags galore, and I've had it
stripped down to ride a bit faster. It handles well both while carrying

previous bike handling experience allowed" (!)

Patrick, I was considering the word classic in the sense that one would say
something subjective like, "The Big Lebowski is a classic film," or even, "That
bike is a classic beauty," and not as an objective term. I understand what you
mean.
Regardless of its non-classic top tube, the Sam is a

I have a 2009 Sam, and yes, they've always had sloping top tubes. It allows a
greater range of PBHs to fit each size. "Classic" is relative, and Riv has
never been in the business of simply remaking vintage bikes. And if one wants a
(mostly) flat top tube Riv, there's always the Atlantis (or a

When I am on my Sam, I truly love this bike. It does everything I want a

I've got to concur with most everyone else here. I bought a Sam last

I am obsessed with my orange Sam. Bike around town, bike 40 miles to work and
try to go fast-ish, load up and go camping. Perfect for all.

Carla, you simply can't go wrong with the Sam. I have mine set up with

I bought a Sam 6 years ago. Having such a frame, built to make me more
upright, able to carry medium sized loads, ride on gravel or pavement, and
light my way through the night changed my life. "Changed my life" is not
