[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Studded Tires for 650b wheels?

2012-10-17 Thread lungimsam

 Been reading about studded tires.
Sounds like you must swap out wheels/tires for dry days, or have a second
bike with studded tires on them only for snow/ice days.

Reads like studs don't do well on dry pavement.

But I bet they are really great on ice. probably life savers.

Do they do the job well?

Studded tires are fine on dry pavement, they just ride like bricks and have
a lot of rolling resistance. but that tends to matter little in the winter
slop. if you live anywhere that has real, variable winter weather for a
few months, there's no point in taking them off - it could be dry on the
morning commute, but the evening commute could be a sheet of ice. and just
because the main roads are dry doesn't mean that road shoulders, secondary
roads, MUPs are in good shape. there might only be 15 yards of ice on a 5
mile commute, but the traction on those 15 yards is well worth a bit of
extra rolling resistance. it's not all that different than studded tires
on a car.

As for how studs handle ice, I like Peter White's analogy of walking on ice
that's been lightly sanded. it's kind of like that. but i rely on my
experience, bike handling skills and common sense way more than my tires
for winter riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?

2012-10-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
From the photos it doesn't look too small: there is the canonical one fist
of seatpost, for example. Does it not feel right? If not, I'd say (again,
judging from the photos) that it is the right size and simply needs to be
refitted properly.

As for use, only you can decide what you want. But I can say from bitter
personal experience that wants change; I've jettisoned many things
including a few bikes thinking I'd never again want them, only to discover
in a couple of years that, whoops! those were bad decisions. (Eric, no, I
don't regret selling the Motobecane. I do regret selling my 1989 Falcon and
my '95 Riv custom, AND my Monocog 29er and a few others.)

If I were you, I'd hang it up for a couple of years. If at the end of that
time I still had no use for it, I'd sell it to someone who does want it.

On Mon, Oct 15, 2012 at 11:34 AM, Will waller.will...@gmail.com wrote:

My 59cm Rivendell Road Standard, I have finally decided, is too small for
me. It has been a fabulous bike for me; but it is what it is — a road bike,
when really, I've wanted a touring bike.

Here are some photos, with the newest toward the bottom:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/**fundenphoto/sets/**72157625044930434/http://www.flickr.com/photos/fundenphoto/sets/72157625044930434/

It is currently running Rivendell's 609mm rims, with the (approx. 34mm)
Schwalbe tires. I put these on when I discovered the bike wouldn't clear
anything wider than a 700x28 tire.

I have my eyes on the Velo-Orange Campeur - which I'm thinking I may
build up from a frame. Any proceeds from the Riv sale would be funneled
 toward the VO build.

I see my Rivendell options as follows:

 - Sell the complete bike as it is built. (plus the original 700c wheels)
 - Cannibalize the parts for the Campeur project; sell the Riv frame.
 - Hang some or all of it up in the attic.

 What do you think?

Of course, it would be nice to partially fund the next project... but
perhaps it would be better to keep the Rivendell? What am I overlooking?

Re: [RBW] Re: lights

2012-10-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Leslie: different people have different eyes with different needs -- I for
example have very bad night vision, explained by an ophthalmologist as the
result of small pupils -- but many have claimed that very bright but
unfocused lights can actually be counterproductive. I mentioned before my
experience with an early HID system that was as bright, at least, as a car
headlight: it was too bright close-up which made its distant beam much less
effective. I found, even with my poor night vision, that less bright lights
actually let me see better on an unlit bike path.

I have no experience riding off road with very powerful lights; some say
that this is where they shine (so to speak).

That said, there is some merit to blindingly powerful lights when you ride
atr night in the face of oncoming traffic, whose headlights tend to
overwhelm all but the brightest bike lights. That said, in my own riding
environment, there are only a couple of places where this is a real bother,
and this is where I ride on a bike path adjacent to heavy traffic moving in
the opposite direction. On other routes where I ride on the same side as
auto traffic, thus separated from oncoming traffic by a lane, I don't have
this problem -- this is the reason for auto low beams.

The best lamps I've used are focused beam German ones like the Edeluxe and
Cyo, but even much inferior lamps have worked, such as a pair of 50 lumen
EOSes (this was some 8 years ago, when the EOS claimed 50 lumens each).

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Studded Tires for 650b wheels?

2012-10-17 Thread Zack
Yep, I concur with Patrick on pretty much everything he said about studded
tires.

They are fine on dry pavement. I actually also happen to live in Vermont,
and, last winter, there were probably only a few days I really 'needed' the
studs for the entire ride, but there are also little patches on every ride
which were a tiny bit icy. I was also really happy last spring when I took
them off and put regular tires back on, the bike felt so much better.

One thing I learned quickly was I would forget that I didn't have studs on
my shoes, and would put my feet down and slip (which can be
painful/disastrous with a big riv between your legs lol). But the natural
consequences helped me remember not to do that after a time or two.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Studded Tires for 650b wheels?

2012-10-17 Thread BykMor
I wholeheartedly third what Patrick in VT and Zack just said.

I put studded tires on my cyclomuter right before the first freeze, take
them off right after the last and FORGET about them in between. The key is
to forget about them and not let people shame you in to thinking you're
doing something silly. (This is assuming you live someplace you would
consider using them.) It'd be like wondering why you rode to work in the
morning with a light on your bike even though you 'expected' to ride home
while it was still light.

Get decent tires with carbide tipped studs.

Don't think of them as resistance training, but just know that you'll be so
strong come spring.

Cheers,
BykMor

I have a Lezyne battery light (rechargeable) on my Mystery Bike, and it's
absolutely terrific. I think the model is Super Drive something or other - 400
or 500 lumens, can't remember, but it's very bright and is a wonderful
complement to a dynamo light (I have a Supernova on that bike), and I suspect
would be great as a standalone light as well. As Pam notes, it's not the

[RBW] Re: What should I do with my slightly-too-small bike?

2012-10-17 Thread Karl Fundenberger
With everyone's input, I think I will put the Riv back in fighting trim -
that is to say, 700c wheels again, no fenders - and keep it as a road bike
for now. In the meantime, I'll still be dreaming about touring bikes with
short top tubes, and I may pass on my 609 wheels or rims to the next person
who'd like to experiment with them. Thank you all so much for your comments.

[RBW] FS - 60cm Velo Orange Polyvalent - Excellent Condition

2012-10-17 Thread Gary Ferguson

I have a Velo Orange Polyvalent MK II that I am putting up for sale. A
nice low trail, 650b all around bike. This bike has been well taken care
of and is ready to ride. I will professionally box the bike and ship with
a tracking number via UPS. I am asking $1150 shipped. Here are some specs
and history.

Pictures -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88812572@N06/sets/72157631792205201/with/8097354527/

Frame geo and info -
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/frames/polyvalent/polyvalent-mkii.html

- No saddle or pedals included.

- 60cm VO Polyvalent MK II frame and fork. The frame is about 1 yr old and
has seen about 1000 miles.

- The wheels are brand new, and hand built, zero miles. Tiagra hubs on
Velocity Synergy rims. DT 2.0 spokes on the front and drive side, and 1.8
on the rear non-drive side. Brass nipples.

- Tires are Panaracer Col de la vie. They measure about 36mm wide. The
tires are in OK shape, and have seen about 1000 miles.

- Honjo fenders are still functional and look good, but have been drilled
more than once for different bikes. This leaves some extra holes. The
front has been trimmed to keep from hitting branches or rocks, and a
mudflap added to keep the same protection.

- Campagnolo Veloce compact crank. 50/34 rings still in great shape.

- 11-34 9spd shimano cassette. Still in great shape.

- Newer Sram 951 chain with no measurable wear.

- Ultegra rear derailleur.

- Shimano FD-4503 front derailleur.

- VO sealed headset.

- Nitto dirt drop 26.0 stem with about 2” of adjustment up or down from
where it is at in the pictures.

- Nitto 48cm noodle bar.

- Tektro brake levers and Tektro Onyx brakes with newer Koolstop salmon
pads.

- Aluminum laprade-style seatpost.

- Shimano barend shifters. They only work in friction mode.

- Greenfield kickstand.

- Fitted with brand new cables and housing, and bartape.

- Weighs about 26.5lbs without pedals.

The cost is high ($3,000 for the week, including great lunches!), but in my

[RBW] Re: FS: 57cm Bleriot plus extras

2012-10-17 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey there Brent -

Welcome to the group!

Just so you know the lineage - the Bleriot was a simplified version of the
Saluki. The Saluki was combined into the 650B/584 tire size end of the A.
Homer Hilsen range, so those models are essentially the same as the
Bleriot.

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hilsen.htm

The 52 cm version of the Sam Hillborne would also use the set wheelsize,
and be reasonably similar in approach.

http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/f-hillborne-blue.htm

Bleriots do show up from time to time used, of course. There is a history
page here:
http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/bleriot/

Hope that helps a bit!

Bobby - I don't know. I think I'd just sit on the seat and take my feet off

pedals down enough to re-engage. The scenario is frailin' down a hill in

Eric, you can slightly feel the gears working in high gear (a kind of

[RBW] FS: various wheels

2012-10-17 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I have lots of wheels that I'm not using anymore. All are handbuilt by me.
Please contact offlist if interested.

White Industries Eccentric ENO fix/free 135 mm 36h on Dyad rim, Wheelsmith
14g spokes, all silver. Used but good condition. $195 shipped. Includes
White Industries 15t fixed cog and lockring. I have other White Industries
fixed cogs for it, too, which I will sell separately. These cogs are
beautifully made and a proprietary design, which is, IMO, the most smartly
designed fixed-cog attachment system available.

Schmidt SON28 (classic style) 36h on Dyad. All silver. The rim is
somewhat worn on the brake surface, but is perfectly true and has a fair
bit of life left in it. $195 shipped. Matching front to the ENO wheel above.

Shimano XT M775 32h Sun-Ringle 29 EQ23 disc-only rim. Rim and hub are
black, spokes are silver Wheelsmith double-butted. Includes 160 mm disc
rotor and Stan's rim tape. Lightly used. This is one of the lighter-weight
metal 29 rear wheels you'll find. $170 shipped

Shimano Alfine front dynamo 32h Sun-Ringle 29 EQ23 disc-only rim. Rim and
hub are black, spokes are silver Wheelsmith double-butted. Includes 160 mm
disc rotor and Stan's rim tape. Lightly used. $170 shipped. Matches the XT
wheel above. Discount of $30 if you buy the set.

Shimano Alfine front dynamo 32h on 26 Alex Adventurer. Hub is black. Rim
is black with machined sidewall. Silver Wheelsmith 14g spokes. Used, but
barely. $160 shipped.

Shimano Deore front hub 36h radially laced to Velocity Aerohead 700C 28h.
Unorthodox 36h/28h hub/rim pairing, but works fine. All silver. Like new. A
very lightweight front wheel. $100 shipped.

Shimano XM M775 36h laced to Sun Ringle EQ31 26 disc-only rim. This is a
heavy-duty rear wheel suitable for loaded touring or other abusive
practices. Includes SRAM 990 11-32 cassette and disc rotor. Used, but good
condition. $185 shipped.

[RBW] Homer Inspired Custom

2012-10-17 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
A buddy of mine is making the leap from building bikes for someone else to
building them under his own name. I jumped at the opportunity to be his
first paying customer. When he asked to see the bike that fits me best, I
of course brought out my 65 AHH. A few reference measurements were made but
the new bike is not a copy. It's designed around 50mm tires, disc brakes,
and lower trail. The under tube is an ode to a tan colored 2TT beach
cruiser I had 20 years ago. Also, like that old beach cruiser, this new
bike will be tig welded. I love the lugs and cream windows on my Homer but
sometimes I feel like it's just too fancy to lock up and walk away in
various parts of town. Tig welded plain-ness for anonymity.

There's not a whole lot to look at yet, but I thought other's might be
interested to watch it come together... Pics
herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/bikeforvictory/sets/72157631718055369/.
Also maybe of interest is that if you scroll back far enough in the linked
photo-stream there are some interesting bikes built under another (perhaps
familiar) name.

Full report when it's rideable.

built the frame (with indispensable help from Mike). A couple of times

became my bike, and a lot of pics of steps along the way.

The cost is high ($3,000 for the week, including great lunches!), but in

Re: [RBW] Anyone use a bike horn? Please recommend.

2012-10-17 Thread Rex Kerr
I had an AirZound, but stopped using it after a short time. I felt that I
was using it too much and becoming more aggressive. I also found, as
alluded to by Mike, that there's often not time to deal with the horn, it's
better to just be visible and react to the hazard. IME, If you see it and
have time to honk, you also have time to respond. For the same reason I
don't think I've ever used the horn on my car either.

The AirZound sat in my parts box for about 10 years until the
hose disintegrated and I threw it out.

Whatever you do, please don't use it on pedestrians!

moving to the right while I'm beside them. I fill it up every couple
of weeks. I don't have to use it much; if you do you may be doing
 something wrong. :-)

BTW, I have the horn mounted behind a 'bar tube' type bar bag on my
mustache bars and it's barely noticeable. And I have been able to
tuck the air bottle between the chainstays and rear fender for a
neater installation. You can't do that with a racer, but you might
be able to do that with a Riv, or Rivish bike.

I used the Zounds for a couple of years when I commuted W-E and return
across town on one of ABQ's busiest boulevards (Central from Atrisco
10 miles to a mile or so east of Eubank). I found it as useful as a
car horn: true, if you can honk, you can react, but that leaves out
one big benefit of horns bicycle and automobile, to wit, **to express
your indignation**. And this country is all about free expression,
right? (I assume that one expresses his indignation only when such
expression is reasonable.)

Seriously -- all kidding aside -- I think that a loud blast of horn
may well have a beneficial effect on someone who, cluelessly or simply
by miscalculation, is infringing dangerously on a cyclist's rights.
For example, a motorist about to pull out unsafely from a rider's
right, simply because he or she is unable to process the cyclist's
approaching speed and because the driver is simply not used to having
to accomodate cyclists.

That said, I gave up on mine because it was too bulky, flimsy, and
because I kept forgetting to keep the pressure up. It finally decayed
in my parts box.

I did use it once against (the word deliberately chosen) pedestrians:
on the bike path, some adolescent boys ignored my shouts, bell,
screams, all well in advance of our conjunction, continuing to
horseplay across the full width of the path. I finally gave them a
blast and was pleased to see them very quickly wake up and jump to
safety.

The AirZound sat in my parts box for about 10 years until the hose
disintegrated and I threw it out.

Whatever you do, please don't use it on pedestrians!

The cost is high ($3,000 for the week, including great lunches!), but in

You're seeing two diffrerent colors. The current model has a light blue,
similar to what was almost the standard color on the original Riv Road back
in the day. Older Homers were a darker blue. Grant has stated that the
shade may change from time to time, but AHH will always come stock with
 blue.

When I bought mine there were two colors of blue in stock. They explained

the darker blue.

I love the color, too, but I'm not brave enough to *ride *it that way. It's
actually a really good fit for me. Low standover, with a long toptube for a

statement to say that I built the frame (with indispensable help
from Mike). A couple of times when I burned through a tube at the
joint, he simply saddles up the torch and repairs the hole so it
barely showed, and was invisible (to me, anyway) after filing.
It’s truly a soup to nuts experience – in the A.N.T Bike and Camp

set on my stream, you can see a pic of the pile of tubes that
became my bike, and a lot of pics of steps along the way.

The cost is high ($3,000 for the week, including great lunches!),
but in my mind totally worth it, and if you want to keep building,
Mike is extremely generous with post-class support. And, of
course, you end up with your very own custom A.N.T. bike!

That's exactly what I'd do, too (but I'd probably throw in a woob woob

shift, so the crank rotation would instantly accelerate... But if your feet
are firmly strapped in and you offer some leg resistance (assuming your
legs aren't ripped from your body) I'd imagine the tires might make a noise
similar to jet landing gear hitting the runway.

In the name of science, man you've GOT to test this!!! Please just

Conceivably you could have a low range and a high range. I had that setup,
but changed out the cranks before I actually used the low gear range.

Thanks for reminding me, I think I may set that up this time around

Eric, you can slightly feel the gears working in high gear (a kind of
ratchety feel; not necessarily fragile, but... different). I still have an
innate fear of destroying the innerds of my IG hubs... something I
 probably
need to get over... I haven't really stomped on the pedals yet. FSA
warrants the crankset for 2 years, but apparently not for mountain bike
use. (Don't know whether it's due to the extra gunk or extra stress). Only
 time will tell.

Re: [RBW] FSA Metropolis 2-Speed Interal-Geared Crankset

2012-10-17 Thread campyonlyguy
If you're talking about the S3X hub, then the answer is yes--If you're riding
in cruising (3rd) gear at a reasonable speed and downshift on the fly to 2nd
gear, your cadence immediately increases. Basically the same as downshifting a
manual transmission car--the engine revs up in the lower gear to catch up with
the speed of the car. It's not quite the same as shifting a standard
(freewheeling) IGH, where the ability to coast hides the abruptness of the
shift.

Question is why you would downshift like that ... In my experience, the only
time you'll need to downshift an S3X is because you're going slow and/or
approaching an incline. Shifting to a lower gear at speed on the flats wouldn't
make any sense.

Well, on a freewheel geared bike I downshift before the hill starts so I
have a rapid spin going into the incline.
