I've been in this position a few times. It seems that long-awaited packages
have a habit of showing up during the 3 seconds that I'm out or can't come to
the door. I know that FedEx has a release form online. Don't know about ups. I
have used the FedEx form to good effect. It's shipment specific, which means
print out and fill in for that particular shipment.

Enjoy the bike!

Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape

2013-07-03 Thread jar351
Two things:
1) In my experience it takes at least four coats of shellac for it to end up
glossy. If you like the matte look, my advice is to just lay thin coats and
stop at three. Anyone else want to confirm that number?
2) The trick to preventing the tape from twisting and adhering to itself is to
remove the backing only a little at a time. It takes a little practice to get
your technique down but then it's not too bad.

[RBW] FS: 60cm Bombadil

2013-07-03 Thread Desert Mariner
Hi, Group

It has been a while since I last posted. It's been challenging for me to
stay involved with this group because I had to change my account and add
another gmail log in when our college went to a google account . . . I'm
still sorting it all out almost two years later!

Due to some life changes, I'm downsizing my possessions and refocusing my
life on some other priorities. I've got several bikes that have to go. The
first is my 60 cm Bombadil. I'm offering it up here first because I've had
pleasant experiences buying and selling from RBW group members. If there
isn't any immediate interest from the group, I'll submit a listing to eBay
in the next week. I'd prefer to sell the bike to someone who lives in the
western US in order to facilitate a delivery or pick-up as I'd rather not
have to pack the bike for shipping. If it's necessary to ship, I'll need to
add the cost of shipping to the purchase price. The particulars on the bike
are below. Please PM with any questions or to arrange a purchase.

PHOTOS at http://www.flickr.com/photos/45341162@N04/sets/72157634391981769/

Note that some of the Flickr photos show the bike in touring mode. Packs,
racks, fenders, etc are NOT included in this sale. I just thought it might
be useful for potential buyers to see the bike set up as a tourer. The
Bombadil makes a great touring bike for a big guy.

60 cm Rivendell Bombadil – Black (Parallel Top Tubes and Kickstand Plate) *

Original owner. Purchased new from RBW 12/2008.

No major scratches. No dents. Paint wear consistent with a used bike. Some
scratches on right chainstay due to chain derailment in past. I’ve used
this bike on tours, as a mountain bike on trails and fire roads and for
commuting. Overall, everything works and the bike is in great shape.

Seatpost – Nitto 83

Handlebars – Nitto RM-013 Dirt Drops 26.0/48cm

Stem – Nitto Dirt Drop 26.0/80mm

[RBW] Albas and Saddle Width

2013-07-03 Thread Larry H
I'm wondering what type (width) of Brooks Saddle people use with Albatross
Bars. I've been using a B-67 on my Sam Hillborne. RBW recommends the
wider saddles for upright bars. Does anyone use the B-17 with Albas or
Bosco bars? I'm not a big fan of the textured leather on the B-67. I
would need to switch to a B-17 or B-72 to get non textured leather. The
B-72 is a double rail saddle and would need a seat post sandwich or Nitto
simple seat post.

I also don't like the creaky springs. I don't really need a sprung saddle
since I'm only around 145 lbs.

Thanks for the feedback.

[RBW] Re: Riding in Door County, Wisconsin...

I've ridden in that area dozens of times.
Just go to NorDor cycles and pick up on of their excellent cycling maps:

They are in Fish Creek right on Hwy-42.
Make up your own route north or south.
Lots of good road riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape

2013-07-03 Thread Lee Chae
1) Yes, I ended up liking four coats the best, too.
2) I agree. I remove just enough backing to make the next loop. I found
this kept the wrap tight on the bars, and also avoided having the tape
stick to itself.

On a side note, I've never been able to get good color using clear shellac
on colored tape. I found it would alter the hue in unexpected ways. I moved
on to trying teflon spray as a way to keep the cloth relatively clean. That
only worked so-so. Now, I neither shellac nor spray. Just use the cloth
tape until it's too grimy and then replace. Does anyone have any tricks
regarding the clear shellac. I like gray bar cloth and would like to keep
the color gray, but with a little protection from dirt and grease.

Thanks,
Lee

On Tue, Jul 2, 2013 at 8:44 AM, jar351 jar...@gmail.com wrote:

 Two things:
 1) In my experience it takes at least four coats of shellac for it to end
up glossy. If you like the matte look, my advice is to just lay thin coats
and stop at three. Anyone else want to confirm that number?
 2) The trick to preventing the tape from twisting and adhering to itself
is to remove the backing only a little at a time. It takes a little
practice to get your technique down but then it's not too bad.

Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape

2013-07-03 Thread Minh
Steve,

Now keep in mind that i only tape 1-2 times a year, and the order i've
taped in the last few years (from longest ago to most recent) is tressotar,
newbaums, tressotar, vo, newbaums, viva so my comments should be considered
with the fact that the more recent ones are the one's i like best. but i
found the viva easiest to keep straight and the vo the hardest. that could
be a function of getting better over time.

if i were to do a more detailed accounting i'd add these attributes, mostly
subjective/eye-of-the-beholder:
viva:
pros: feels soft, bright colors, thinner/easier to lay down
cons: short length per roll (when compared to newbaums) makes covering wide
bars tough, thin (less cushion), expensive

newbaums: affordable, long per roll makes even widest bars easy to cover,
way too many colors
cons: not as soft as viva, weave is not as tight

tressostar: pretty close to newbaums, not as long per roll
cons: traditional color choices, thinner then newbaums but not as tight
weaved as viva

vo: long per roll, wider then others, thicker
cons: thicker, has a strange feel

overall my order would be same taking into account all factors. my biggest
gripe with the viva is that it is expensive (relative to others) and a
little too short (though the same length as tressostar). The viva's
usually come with bar-end plugs, but not an advantage if you don't need
them. but i'm willing to overlook these as the viva feel the nicest to the
hand.

i've tried all the major ones, viva, newbaums, tressotar, velo-orange,
and that's the order i would rate them personally. the viva is
expensive, but it actually has a slightly softer feel to the hand
(really hard to explain). i think newbaums is the best value as the
rolls are really long, and they hold up well. i didn't like the vo
one as it's really wide and thicker--which may be an advantage
  depending on your preference.

How would you rank them in order of wrestling difficulty? I personally
found Newbaums to be exceptionally hard to wrap compared to Tressostar.
 I haven't tried the others.

[RBW] WTB/WTT: front disk hub, 32 hole, preferably black but silver accepted.

2013-07-03 Thread Patrick Moore
I want to remove the dynohub from the Fargo's fat wheelset for use on the

much sulking) OR:

have very kindly donated 7400 series Dura Ace wheelset, 32 hole, 126 OL
freewheel rear, to trade, or (if a first claimant does not want it (a Sanyo
-- pretty sure: will check) bb dynamo, very nice condition). Or can
reluctantly part with cash.

(The DA hubset was donated for or -- long story -- in connection with, the
Ram build, so, as the swap is for the Ram, I think it ethicalistically
acceptable to do this. O'wise I'd keep it or give it away, with focus on
former. It's nice.)

ALSO: M324s, those SPD click-in platform thingies, hole buncha old
fashioned cleats including NIP metal ones with nails (how cool is that?) as
well, come to think of it, as a pair of new, but last model, slotted cleats
designed for Look bolt pattern, these from Yellow Jersey; and other
thingies.

Oh, did I say it? I can pay, too. Just kidding about the sulking.

Re: [RBW] Re: Newbaum's cloth bar tape

2013-07-03 Thread Philip Williamson
I feel the Newbaum's colors fade super fast. Green, red, black, for sure.
Maybe the blue and orange less so. The Viva forest green stayed pleasantly
dark forever. According to my memory...
I don't have any problem taping with Newbaum's, Viva, or whatever black
cloth tape the Bike Peddler had hidden in the back. I did shellac the
black! First shellackage for me. It looks and feels great.

Now keep in mind that i only tape 1-2 times a year, and the order i've
taped in the last few years (from longest ago to most recent) is tressotar,
newbaums, tressotar, vo, newbaums, viva so my comments should be considered
with the fact that the more recent ones are the one's i like best. but i
found the viva easiest to keep straight and the vo the hardest. that could
be a function of getting better over time.

if i were to do a more detailed accounting i'd add these attributes,
 mostly subjective/eye-of-the-beholder:
 viva:
pros: feels soft, bright colors, thinner/easier to lay down
cons: short length per roll (when compared to newbaums) makes covering
wide bars tough, thin (less cushion), expensive

newbaums: affordable, long per roll makes even widest bars easy to cover,
 way too many colors
cons: not as soft as viva, weave is not as tight

tressostar: pretty close to newbaums, not as long per roll
cons: traditional color choices, thinner then newbaums but not as tight
 weaved as viva

vo: long per roll, wider then others, thicker
cons: thicker, has a strange feel

overall my order would be same taking into account all factors. my
biggest gripe with the viva is that it is expensive (relative to others)
and a little too short (though the same length as tressostar). The viva's
usually come with bar-end plugs, but not an advantage if you don't need
them. but i'm willing to overlook these as the viva feel the nicest to the
 hand.

and that's the order i would rate them personally. the viva is
expensive, but it actually has a slightly softer feel to the hand
(really hard to explain). i think newbaums is the best value as the
rolls are really long, and they hold up well. i didn't like the vo

How would you rank them in order of wrestling difficulty? I personally
found Newbaums to be exceptionally hard to wrap compared to Tressostar.
 I haven't tried the others.

a 27.0mm Nitto S-83 was available I'd be all over it...literally and

Regarding the bottom bracket creak that drives you nuts...I use the very
good , inexpensive MKS pedals (Sylvan Track and narrower Stream..like the
MKS touring pedals Riv carried). Both dried up. I tested for this by
swapping in some old deore XT pedals I had and the problem was gone. Once
my partner the mechanic cleaned and regreased the MKS jobs , that noise
vanished...but it was a bugger to find and it can drive you nuts and into a
waiting open door.

I have an Alfine 8 setup on my Bombadil but I don't do touring. Its plenty
of gears for rolling hills around here. We do have a couple of steep ones
too. If you get a decent tensioner like a Paul Melvin you can run a compact
double up front and have 16 speeds, although there might be some overlap, I
am not a Patrickesque gearing ratio expert. I run the older Nexus 7 on my
MB2 with a triple, which voids the warranty I think due to do torque
specifications (in low gears) but have been running it for 3 years and
haven't blown it up yet. ..

adults.
Frame received without issue Tuesday morning. Was as good as expected with
double box artwork this time and the type of attention to detail and care we
all have grown to expect with Rivendell packaging. Despite the revolution of
shipping staff over the 15 years I have been partaking of various products from
Walnut Creek the packing and shipping has evolved into an efficient art form as
many can attest to over the years. Pictures to come showing unpacking and build
but had issue arise with favorite 'new' Sony 16-50 2.8 DSL lens.
Perry good point about release form checked about that as an option but I
believe UPS requires a live signature only per Rivendell to release the bike.
This was my third frame purchased and was the case each time.
BobbyB I half expected that my UPS driver was going to swing back later since
we have such a good report and he enjoys quickly discussing my never ending
bike projects. He commented how shocked he was not to connect with me the day
before and wanted to know when he could see the finished build. One of truly
good ones who works for the brown. I will ask for a cell # early next week
when I see him again. I was seriously ready to jump on the r1100gs and attempt
to track him down but thought working on my patience would display better
self-growth. Going full circle my wife felt bad at my minor disappointment and
tried to cheer me up with a wonderful lunch.

When you say touring, are you talking about 4 bags camping / cooking gear

to carry 40 lbs of load (surprisingly easy to get to). Heavily loaded,
hills, longer days, a low gear around 20 comes in pretty handy.

this guy is using one on a Surly Krampus so it is being done
http://www.whileoutriding.com/bike-talk/gear-ponderings

I think it depends on a lot of things, fitness, how much you pack,
steepness of terrain etc. I really like having a bailout gear of around
20 for steep dirt road climbs. On paved roads with moderate loads it's
more doable. I once rode hwy 1 from Eureka to SF with a low of 27 and was
fine.

[RBW] FT: brooks b-17 for something narrower?

2013-07-03 Thread dan gee
Hi folks,

After breaking a Specialized this week, I find myself in need of a saddle for
my daily communter. In an attempt to help clean out the parts box: anyone
happen to have a saddle that doesn't agree with them that they'd be interested
in trading for a lightly used honey b-17? I need something in the 150-ish
range... A skinnier brooks would be fine, of course, but I'm open to pretty
much anything which is flat and structurally sound, if not pristine... knock
offs, off brands, even something not leather! Pease reply off list, and thanks.

Hey, James.

You know, I don't really recall where I was exactly for that shot. On that
tour, we were traveling on the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route from Seattle to
San Luis Obispo - A great ride!! Somewhere along the way, I think a paved
bicycle path ended in a dirt trail and we just decided to follow it. An
hour later, I was a lot happier on the Bombadil with Marathon Supreme 50's
than my wife was with her Heron and 32mm tires. That's happened enough
times in several years of touring that I'm completely sold on 50mm tires
for touring.

Re: [RBW] IGH on a touring bike?

2013-07-03 Thread Zack B
I break rear drive trains.

A lot.

I used to break axles on 6 speed freewheels with regularity. Solid axles.

My commute involves a lot of hill climbing, including a really nasty
one in front of my house, as well as carrying heavy loads home from
the store. I ride in all weather, and a lot of rain. When I say that I
mean that I ride during the middle of the thunderstorm, not just that
I ride during drizzles.

I started commuting on a nexus 7 speed once getting freewheel parts
became a pain and conserving the ones I already had a priority (this
was back in 2000 when things looked really bleak on that front).

That hub lasted without issue until I replaced it with an 8 speed
nexus. Neither hub has had any issues except for the cassette joint
and the shifter, which were minor.

The nexus/alfine hubs have one of the strongest axles available in a
rear drivetrain for standard bicycles. The mechanism, if properly
lubricated and adjusted, is the one of the most reliable large range
mechanisms ever designed. The only people who regularly break them are
large 29ers riding them aggressively off road with a below-spec
chainring-cog ratio. These people also break everything else, and
usually break the same part, a pawl.

The shifter selection is still lame but bar end shifters
(jtekengineering.com) and now lever shifters (hotrodbicycles.com) as
well as brifters (sussex.com.tw/versa.html) are available.

The other advantage from a touring point of view is that shimano is
now making roller brakes that were clearly designed for electric
bicycles. This would give you the option of an all weather touring
brake that can easily be removed from the bicycle, and that has a heat
fail mode that is non destructive of the brake itself (you set the
grease on fire). The roller brake is also dirt cheap and
indestructible compared to a disc brake, and much simpler to set up
and maintain.

The issue with having a high enough gear range is simply: how fast do
you need to go on a long downhill? You have enough range on the nexus
for everything else. It usually isn't a good idea to race a heavily
loaded bicycle downhill in an area you don't know very well, and the
issue tourists usually face is controlling their speed rather than
spinning out. With the nexus you simply stop pedaling and let the
weight of the bicycle (that you sweated to lug up the hill) do the
work for you.

Regarding the bottom bracket creak that drives you nuts...I use the very

swapping in some old deore XT pedals I had and the problem was gone. Once my

[RBW] Re: I'm not sure I get the connection between bikes and hatchets...

2013-07-03 Thread jphillip...@me.com
These guys are so great, friendly helpful, I wouldn't care if they were
selling assault weapons and Argentinian grilling racks along side their
bikes. Whenever I email, call or drop by to ask a question or buy
something, they are so cheery and helpful, they erase a weeks worth of
unpleasant workplace residue from my soul. I wish I worked there!

Besides, a nice Swedish axe handle emerging from my saddlebag would
probably discourage most obnoxious drivers in my neighborhood from trying
to run me off the road.

I like seeing someone with enough cojones to carry whatever he likes on his
store's shelves. It reminds me of the old general stores on the Big Island
(that's THE island of Hawaii) that used to carry everything you ever really
needed.

I will now step off my soap box and finish my martini.

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] For the love of Albas

2013-07-03 Thread Robert Barr
I think I am converted for good, but I also think bars are a very body
specific/riding style specific choice Our friends at Riv patiently (very
patiently!) worked with me through many iterations of Noodlles and M-bars.
How wide, how high... I even had to try the Bull Moose. Once I had ridden
Albas I have never been happy with other bars. I really wanted to put
Noodles on my Hunqapillar - they looked so good in the pictures... but they
felt so bad compared to the Albas. I did almost the same thing with my
MB3s, I liked the look of the M-bars, but once I tried the Albas I couldn't
ride them. I have not tried the Boscoes or Albastache bars, but they seem
to be variations on the Alba theme. I suspect I would like them. Other
folks seem to be equally passionate about drops. Grant wrote an excellent
essay on handlebar variations in a early 90s B-stone catalog, and I think
the good news is that his influence has helped us out of the dark ages of
just drops and straight bars. Options are good.

Converted for good? Rachel likes hers so far, and I guess I'll have to see
how I feel about noodles vs albas and try both for myself. As for now, the
noodles are on order with the SH frame!

don't mind driving. If not I would love to carpool with someone coming down.
