[RBW] Re: Saluki Links

2017-08-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
I'm late to this discussion and have not been able to follow all of the
rather cryptic postings, but. I have an early, canti, grey Saluki
which, over time has become my most ridden bike. It's just so comfortable,
so versatile, so ...perfect. I have a soft spot in my heart for my
Rambouilet, but the Saluki guides over so much bad road with ease. I
currently run 38's but intend to go with Compass 41s under VO fenders.

[RBW] Re: Saluki Links

2017-08-07 Thread Dave Johnston
Michael,

Compass has just increased their 42mm tire by 1.5mm so the fit will only
get tighter. You might want to try some older ones. The 1.75" Pari-moto is
measuring between 40-41mm for most people on a rim like the synergy.

[RBW] Another customer service shout out

Long story short:
I exchanged a medium saddleback for a large. Called Riv, told they wouldn't
deduct the free shipping on the medium because it's an exchange, but I pay
shipping on the return. OK, that's their policy, fair enough. Today I got my
refund, surprise, they added the $23 I laid out for return shipping.

Of course I put that towards another order right away.

Thanks guys.

[RBW] FS: 59 cm 1993 XO-3 & Hunq fork & cliffhangers

2017-08-07 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm moving and realizing once again that I don't have the time and/or good
weather to justify having this many bikes. So up for sale is a pristine
complete but disassembled 59 cm 1993 XO-2. I bought this last summer and it
was basically NOS as it was a prize of some sort for someone who worked in the
tire division who never rode.
I disassembled it and and framesaved and regreased and repacked everythingand
painstakingly rebuildt it simular to the Rawland canti Ravn concept then rode
it less than 100 faiweather miles and now it sits.

Included in the sale is the complete build kit from 1993 with exception of
original tape and cable housing. It will be packed and shipped via bike
flights at buyers expense in a Rivendell box and the packing that came with my
Sam H. I paid around $825 and would like to get something in that ballpark
because of the condition.

If you are interested in a velocity custom built wheelset and hunqapillar fork
to turn this into a fat tire adventure tourer I am selling them too. The
wheelset is velocity Clydesdale cliffhanger 36 spoke rear 130 mm road hub/ 32
spoke front ATB. All black everything. The hunq fork was for a 58 cm frame
but I had the canti posts lowered by comrade cycles in Chicago. Add $550 for
this stuff plus bikeflights for the wheelset.

Fair winds,

Captain Conway

[RBW] Anyone try the new Fairweather Rain Poncho?

2017-08-07 Thread Bob B

Has anyone tried the Fairweather rain poncho? It looks pretty good; I'm
particularly interested in the elastic band that will fit snugly over
Alba's AND a Wald basket!

Which would be awesome, because my Vaude poncho barely covers my bars and
often blows up out of place (it has no elastic).

Anyway, been doing more rain riding lately and was considering springing
for this, and an endorsement from someone on the list would probably cause
me to buy it.

[RBW] Atlantis Fender recommendations

2017-08-07 Thread John G.
Hey all,

I'm looking to get some fenders on my Atlantis. Here's the criteria:

- 700c wheels
- Snoqualmie Pass 44mm tires. Would consider going to 38mms, but honestly,
I'd prefer to keep things fat. 50mm tires would be even better!
- I mostly ride on the road, but occasionally hit some light gravel
- I'd much prefer aluminum over plastic.

I don't think Honjo makes a set that meets my requirements. Any other
recommendations, or am I wrong about Honjo?

Thanks,
John

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-07 Thread Ash [who works to bike]
I didn't think that many Joe's were up for sale. At least one less now
because I've decided to not sell mine.

The way this bike treats me on the kinds of roads and trails I ride on, I
felt that I'm going to regret not having it even if frequency of me going
out for rides were to be once a month or less (other than neighborhood
grocery trips).

Besides, I didn't want to take it for granted that a bike like this (long
wheelbase, number of eyelets/braze-on, 650b wheel, rim brake) of good
quality would be available 3-4 years down the road when I'm going to need
it.

Quite relieved that now the Appaloosa will be there in the stable anytime
I'm up for a ride!!

[RBW] Re: why so many joe's up for sale?

2017-08-07 Thread Frank Brose
I don't know the answer to your question but I wish I would have bought one
when I had the chance and I probably will when a silver one comes up for
sale. Patience is something I struggle with but one will pop up in time.
Does anybody know if Riv plans on continuing the Joe? You'd think they
would given the popularity of the Joe. But marketing genius I am not so
we'll see.

easier. And I like the 650B wheel size. However these days I'm beginning
to like bikes with wider tires for the local trails.

[RBW] Roadini Sizes

2017-08-07 Thread Jay Connolly
I'm not going to buy one, but does anybody understand what the Roadini frame
sizes actually are? One of the pics on the site says it's of a 63.
Earlier--months ago--the bike was described as coming in a 62. I believe the
brochure refers to the dimensions of 61. I'm not going to buy one. Just
wondering. In recent communications, I believe it says that the frames came in
one cm different than originally stated. Does this mean that the original 62
came in as a 63 or as a 61? I'm just trying to clarify so that others have
clear information. I'm not going to buy one. I don't need it. Especially the
grey one--that's the one I really don't need.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini!

2017-08-07 Thread Matt B.
+1 for threaded/quill setups, its one thing I'm glad Riv stuck to (though
they didn't on the tandem). It's nice to be able to adjust your bar height
if the mood strikes. Your body changes too. I guess it's not very often you
need to redial your bar height but when you do, the option is golden. With
a quill stem you can make adjustments in the middle of a ride in about 5
seconds with an allen key from your saddlebag.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini!

2017-08-07 Thread Geeter
Patrick, I love that you had a bike designed with a long enough headtube
and angles to actually slam it upright! That is awesome! That is exactly
what I would love right now.

I am good example of the ebbs and flows one goes through with geometry
based on health. I always rode aggressively and had pretty good saddle to
bar drop. When my lumbar discs started acting up I started riding with
more steerer and even buying high rise threadless stems. I have a Gunnar
Roadie with a barely cut fork for that reason. My Jones has an uncut tube
and actually looks normal because Jeff designed it as so. He even sells
new tubes for 30 bucks with his Truss so you can always just go back to the
drawing board.

After having surgery a few months back the only way I can ride comfortably
on the Gunnar is by using the full steerer. If it was cut low like many of
you mentioned I would have either sold it or bought a new fork.

The threaded option in my opinion these days is almost a must. If I wanted
to slam, I could. If I want a high rise, I can. No need to worry about
steerer tube materials and stress in the conventional sense.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini!

2017-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Dave; thanks, understood. I've twice had custom stems made to get bars high
enough for comfort, which would certainly be a shame if originally the
steerer was fully long enough to do the job itself.

Funny, Chauncey Matthews designed my road bike for dirt with a highly
sloping tt and a very high head tube, so much so that I've resorted to a 6*
(minus 6* in my case) stem to get the bar 1 cm lower than before -- there
is no spacer under the stem. I may even go to a -10*, or a -17* with the
one spacer on top of the stem replaced below it.

But even so, he left the steerer so long that the first thing I had to do
was cut about 3" off of it; I've since cut another inch!

[RBW] Re: Roadini Sizes

2017-08-07 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Maybe it's been made clear, but the brief history is that we ordered the
62, 58, 55, 51, 48 and they came measured that way to the point on the seat
lug. We overlooked this, and it turns out the normal measuring way was 1cm
less. A cm is nothing when it's part of a 6-deg upsloping top tube,
extended head lug, tall hs stack, and long-quill stem...so rather than redo
the drawings, we just said OK to the new sizes.

Threaded and threadless: Both work-obviously. We generally go threaded
because they allow quill stems, which make up and down adjustments easily
and -- there's way more range than there is with a chopped threadless stem.
When adjusted properly, they'll stay adjusted for years--maybe until the
headset wears out. I have not readjusted a threaded headset in 20 years. If
it is a recurring thing, there are ways to prevent it, but that's tributary
that will lead to more and more. Threadless is cool in its threadless way,
and is extremely clever...but so's threaded.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadini!

2017-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
Geeter: I hope your back at least stabilizes, even if you can't go back to
the slammed stems of youth. (I once had my stem fully 6" below saddle, and
this with stems with 140, later shortened to 135, mm extensions! No more.

I have to confess that I didn't ask Chauncey for the high head tube; I just
pointed to my 2 Rivendells and said, "Those are the bikes whose handling
and fit I judge all others by" -- or words to that effect. I could get my
Matthews' bar as low as those on my Rivs -- ~3 cm below saddle -- if I
wanted to, with a 17* drop, but it's very comfortable as is. I may switch
to a -6/10 cm instead of the current -6/9 -- this after already moving from
an 8.

I'm tempted to find a radically dropping track stem for it

Not sure I'd be better off with a quill system; I'd have had to buy a new
one already as it is!

Re: [RBW] Headbadge Poster Update - Help Needed

2017-08-07 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey Marty,

I've wanted one of these posters since I saw one in the Rivendell HQ
dressing room a while ago!

Do you ever have them printed up? Or are we on our own for that?

Best,
Reed
