Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for tire pumps on the road?

2014-01-19 Thread Eric Platt
Brian reminds of the other part. Each bike has it's own patch kit and
spare tube(s). To be honest, I'll rarely use the patch kit in the field.
Nice to know it is there.

Do believe Grant recommended that back in one of the old Readers.

I kind of like peg mount frame fitting pumps, and the types available in
the US seem limited to a handful, which makes for easy decision making.
So I have decided to get the Zefal HPX for now, as I am sure it will make
it much easier to inflate a tire than with a 12-or-less mini pump (size
needed to fit into my Pendle bag).

Seems like the Road/Mini/Mountain Morphs are really popular, and the
 Quicker and the Lesynes.

Zefal also makes mini frame pumps about 11.5 long, but looks like only
available in Europe. Too bad! They have the classic Silca shape to them.

Similar result. The Longboard front fender is also longer up front. Nice
to keep spray off a rack or light.

I've been known to both use a longer flap on regular SKS fenders and a
shorter flap on the Longboards so the front fender doesn't wag the tail as
much.

the flash-but it rides very well and for a fraction of the cost. I also
like the rear drops- can go single if that is your thing. Day tripper!
The model of what 98% of road bikes should be for the non-racer.

Hey Riv folks (x-post with the iBOB list, apologies if you see it twice)-

A burgeoning interest in off-road riding has me selling my Salsa
Casseroll road bike to fund potential explorations in the MTB realm. Not
exactly Rivendell, but I've always thought of this bike as my poor man's
Rambouillet, being a versatile and comfortable road bike with high
handlebars and good clearances. This is a early 2008 (caliper-brake) frame
and fork that I bought new, having built and re-built it many times. It is
the largest size, with the seat tube measuring 59cm center-top, but a
sloping top tube and long head tube mean the frame fits like a traditional
62cm frame. Salsa Classico chromoly tubing.

The frame uses 47-57mm reach brakes, allowing for a ~28mm tire with
fenders and a ~37mm tire without; it currently has 28mm Ruffy Tuffy tires
 and SKS P35 fenders.

Having long campy-style horizontal dropouts, I ran it for a long time as
a fixed gear road bike, but in the past couple of years I've settled on a
2x7 derailleur setup. It has an eclectic but really functional mix of
parts, including 7spd Shimano 600 DT shifters and derailleurs indexing
perfectly with 7 of 8spds on a Campagnolo Athena cassette rear hub, Sugino
XD 48/36 double crank, Shimano A550 front brake, Dia-Compe single pivot
rear brake, Tektro R200 levers with gum hoods, Salsa Cowbell bars, Thomson
 Elite setback seat post.

This is a definitely used but well-maintained bike; I'm a professional
mechanic and like to keep my own bikes ship shape, if not perfectly clean.
There is some minor paint wear on the downtube, top of the seat tube, and
 seat stays, but no rust.

A full set of pictures, with more information on parts spec, can be found
 here:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/85709120@N07/sets/72157639449138215/

Full frame geometry can be found on Salsa's bike archive:
 http://salsacycles.com/bikes/archive/casseroll_double

Price is $750 OBO. Local pickup in the SF Bay Area (I'm in Berkeley) is
preferred, but if you're really interested and not local we can work out
something for shipping. Feel free to contact with any other questions.

Re: [RBW] Bike Travel - Share your thoughts

2014-01-19 Thread richdpow...@gmail.com
I want to throw out four options. They are: SS, Bike Friday, Brompton and
rentals.

I'm a small builder- for about the last 22 years and one of the early
installers of SS couplers starting in 1995 or so. I share that only for
the purpose of explaining that I've been though over 100 retro's and
learned a bit along the way. I'm a big fan of them FOR the right person.
If you are mechanical-it is a breeze. If you are not- it increases the
expense and frustration.

Can your frame be coupled? Any easy way to check is to cut our two
cardboard squares 26x26 and draw a boarder around the edge 1/2 in. I
like to do that to have a margin of error. When I stared I'd put it all in
CAD but the cardboard lay-out process is much easier and can be more
accurate. It also helps to see if you will have to remove your cranks or
not on some bikes or how you will handle the for- many in the 56 and below
range can remain installed.. Throw the squares on the floor and arrange
them underneath your frame and fork laying on top of them(wheels removed)
You will get a quick idea if your even close. Other considerations are
actual tube size. I ran into a few metric sized frames where I've had to
shim the couplers to fit. Not a huge deal- built an extra step and
expense. $450-475 w/o paint is a good deal. If your frame is rough- have
them primer the area and ride it that way for a while. If you are
traveling much- the bike will get chipped up- why spend $350 or more on new
paint-only to be messed up(technical term).

I've traveled with a and SS coupled road bike and front suspended mtb many
times over the years. I also have used a Bike Friday tandem and single as
well as a Brompton. I like them all for a variety of reason and won' t
writ that book today.

How long is your trip is a key question followed by what is your intended
mileage and course you are covering.

I go Arizona a lot for short trips- personal and business. Many times I
have a day or two to get some rides in. For that I'll either rent for
off-road and check out a new bike I'm interested in- latest and greatest
sort of thing. $60-80 for a $3500 -5k bike. That is me- I like my own
bikes- also like to check out the new stuff. No hassle at all.

For road rides- mostly I'll do a Friday- easy assembly-if I have a voucher
for a checked bag. Otherwise the rental again is a cheaper or less hassle.
Many cheap model to choose from and many on ebay- under 1k with easy
ability to re-sell.

Before the bag fee's a Friday or coupled bike was a no brainer- now a
rental is a reasonable option as well.

If you are doing an extended tour using a train in there- say my trip to
Rome- Loved the Friday and the bag was free then.

I really only like a Brompton for mixed mode transport (train-bus) or
messing around in a city exploring. Not so much for longer rides-for me
anyway. I also like to throw in the car for trips. It gives me an activity
when I have down time. Again- I'm not road racer X and like to just get
out and ride.

More than anyone wanted to maybe know. If you have any questions- feel
free to email off or on list.

Re: [RBW] Rainbow 200

2014-01-19 Thread RonaTD
Andy and I had a great time on the first leg. I was on the Travelo (Bleriot
Protovelo with SS couplers). The ride started chilly, upper 40s, but for
somebody from Wisconsin it was short sleeve weather. Once the sun got above the
hills it warmed up fast. Got up to about 90 on the climbs up to Rainbow. Then
some clouds built up and it was cool back at the coast, where I had a lovely
sunset ride down PCH back to La Jolla. Lots of hills on that ride, with a few
fun switchback descents to reward you for all the work getting to the top. Not
as many scenic vistas as I thought we might get. Fun group of people, lots of
strong riders, and great support with well placed water/food stops. Great job
by SD randonneurs. Didn't get much in the way of photos but might post a few
when I'm back to the winter wonderland.

Re: [RBW] Re: All rounder

2014-01-19 Thread qwerty
I don't think it's been mentioned, but towards the end of the lifespan
of the AR, it morphed a bit from the original/XO style. I recall
ordering my AR back in late summer of 2000, and at that time,
discussing my deliberations with Grant about going with the AR or
waiting a short while for an Atlantis. At that time, the design for a
AR in my size (60cm) was for a 700c wheel size. It was also to be
built by Curt Goodrich. Grant said there wouldn't be all that much
difference in the two, but having the custom Goodrich build, fit,
lugs, etc, would make the bike more unique and special. Once again,
I'm glad I listened to Grant's advice, and my AR is the best bike I've
ever ridden. When I periodically go though my mental downsizing
exercise, the AR is always at the top of my list for keepers.

I'm not intentionally trying to be mean but in what other environment would
an obese person wear tight Lycra spandex? Maybe a yoga class but that's
indoors and more or less private. If bicycle racing has lauded it self for

this forum) advancing the sport then this ubiquitous use of Lycra deflates
some of that supposed claim. There needs to be BBH store in every major
urban center to re-educate the masses of non-racers acting like racers.
Let's stop the insanity. Disclaimer: I think you should wear what feels
comfortable to you I'll just avert my gaze in another direction.

Ron, you were just too close to the group and well sometimes you eat the
bar and sometimes the bar eats you. What would have been their response
had you laughed back at them? Anyways knickers are cool or warm depending

[RBW] Re: All rounder

2014-01-19 Thread Chris Lampe 2
I'm enjoying this thread as it allows me to learn about yet another
Rivendell that was long gone by the time I discovered RBW.

I am just enthralled with 55mm Big Apples on 26 rims and now I'm setting
my long-term sights on a good bike to utilize that combo. Right now I've
got them on my old 1995 Trek 730 hybrid (a 700c bike) and it's an absolute
blast to ride! The problem is.no brakes, for obvious reasons. I have
a cheap aftermarket fork on it and I'm seriously considering having the
canti studs moved to accommodate brakes for 26 wheels. The geometry of
this bike is surprisingly close to the Riv All-Rounder and I can see why
people love those All-Rounders so much. The geometry is fairly nimble yet
the wide tires give it a surprising amount of stability. Sort of
oxy-moronic in it's handling. In contrast, my 700c bike with 40mm Duremes
feels twitchy and unstable.

The XO-1 seems to sporty for my tastes and the Atlantis seems a bit too
slanted toward touring but the All-Rounder sounds just about perfect for
what I'm looking for in a bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: All rounder

2014-01-19 Thread James Warren

Another little detail is that the name All Rounder only had definition in a
capital-letter sense in the time before the bikes marked Rivendell were
considered custom.

The very first Riv offerings in the 90's (Road, All-Rounder, the rare Mountain,
and later the Longlow) were all their fanciest frames and all had standard
geometry charts. They were not custom.

The All Rounder, non-custom bike had a geometry chart that eventually said 700C
for the bigger sizes, 26 inch for the smaller sizes (59 cm being the cutoff I
think.) There were set sizes and it wasn't advertised to be customizable.

Then came the Atlantis, and that's really when the
Rivs-with-fun-names-on-the-downtube-that-didn't-say-Rivendell started to become
the norm. Sometime around this, Grant announced that the bikes called Rivendell
are all considered custom now and it became clear that there would be two tiers
of Riv frame offereings.

Henceforth with the fancier pure Rivendells, you could still get something that
met all the characteristics of an all rounder but there was now no geometry
chart to give it that name as a model name. And as a custom, I'm guessing the
wheel-size was determined on a case-by-case basis (with some limitations
imposed by Rivendell.)

So all-rounders still exist in the same way that Bombadils still exist. (You
have to be willing to go custom.)

Rivs have always undergone fairly frequent change. Part of that is a
result of the production scheme (all fab is outsourced, which leads to
changes in price and availability) and part is due to new ideas
occurring to the designer or being brought to his attention. As he has
often said, the RBW ethos stays in every bike they make. I don;t think
any of them is a bad bike or a Edsel of the bike world. Some are
better suited to some riders or conditions than others.

2014-01-19 Thread Christopher Chen
And that's the ticket Bruce!

I agree with the Riv philosophy that choice doesn't always equal good; that
if some disaster happened and you could only have one bike for the rest of
your life, you'd be perfectly happy with a Riv, no matter if it's a AR,
custom, Atlantis...

I mean that's the point, right? Every bike except the Roadeo is
deliberately versatile.

Of course since we have choices those questions will always rise up, but at
some point you gotta just ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Racing Sucks

2014-01-19 Thread Ron Mc
It just didn't skin my teeth - I thought the whole thing was funny. Just
got in from a ride - crossed San Antonio to the Frankenbike meet. Had some
good Mexican food - south of downtown even.
The Frankenbike is a hoot. A half-acre of tables selling old parts,
frames, old bikes. It's a lot of fun. Hadn't been to one since last April
and it's really taken off - grown a lot larger. But that visit last April,
my old Raleigh is famous there. Everyone remembered me and there were a
lot of old Raleighs for show - none for sale - they were all for show and
tell - they were the personal bikes of the guys running the tables. So I
guess that's being an influence, too.

Another time we were on a trail and two girls were talking how they hated
their saddles and were going to buy (more) new ones - they were both up to
chamois plus double gel pads. My daughter was there with her load hauler
and canvas shorts. I showed them her B68S, but they were unimpressed.

Absolutely, wear what's comfortable, But I still like starting with a comfy
bike.

I feel mine is built a bit more like an AHH with cantis. Or an Atlantis

those two. As they were fully custom by that point, really no two are alike.

did having thick touring tires and being the last one up the hill!

[RBW] ISO 51-52cm used touring Riv, Heron, Soma or 80s touring

2014-01-19 Thread JimM
Greetings,
I joined this group a while ago, but have never posted. Anyway, I'm
looking for a touring machine for my financee (51-52cm) and haven't seen
much on ebay or the local craigslist, so thought I'd give this forum a try.
While it would be ideal to get an Atlantis or Sam, we're also interested in
a Bleriot, canti Saluki, or even some of the cantilevered touring bikes of
the mid 80s.

Thanks,
Jim

[RBW] Re: School me on Panaracer gumwall casing design.

2014-01-19 Thread Jason Cloutier
Michael,

That's not a gumwall tire, it's a skinwall tire. A true gumwall tire has a
layer of rubber covering the sidewalls from bead to bead. The sidewalls
are covered with gum colored rubber without carbon black added, thus the
name. My old Schwinn Varsity had gumwall tires. My Surly has skinwall
tires. From a distance both look similar since the sidewalls are a similar
color.

Skinwall tires are fabric with a strip of rubber tread and some thin skin
of rubber or latex to protect the fabric. Sometimes the sidewalls are tan,
black, dark brown or various other colors.

Somewhere in time we've lost the meaning of bicycle terms Gumwall vs.
skinwall is a good example.

Re: [RBW] Re: Racing Sucks

2014-01-19 Thread Hugh Smitham
Daniel,

I think it's awesome that they're out on a bike...I do think it's weird
that they feel compelled to wear tight fitting clothing to get out and ride
a bike for what ever reason, maybe it's a need to fit in isn't that our
nature as human beings to fit in? It's sort of a built in survival thing.
If I'm being truly honest I feel it boarders on the ridiculous. I'm skinny
and I always felt sort of weird running around with a super hero outfit
where you could sort of see my junk. I since have seen the light and
realize I can wear regular clothes to enjoy a bike ride and not subject
folks to unseemly protrusions. Just so you know I'm attempting to be self
deprecating here. My comments are 90% meant for humorous purposes only and
a dash of reality thrown in.

I do really feel for folks that are overweight it happen IMHO to be a
recent cultural thing eating crap food being sedentary watching sports and
others being active on the TV and in some cases it's a medical condition
that requires a physician supervision.

Furthermore and seriously other overweight folks may see the Lycra wearing
variety and think there is no way in hell I'm gonna wear that to ride a
bike and just give up on a fantastic activity. Racing has infected the
overall consciousness IMO negatively. It's this stupid competitive chip we
carry around that prevents a bulk of society to slow down and enjoy the
ride. There my rant is over for now, but I reserve the right to get chippy
again.

[RBW] Today's Ride

2014-01-19 Thread Larry Powers
Today was 35 degrees and windy. I had an 11 mile loop on about 5 miles of dirt
and 6 miles of paved on my Quickbeam with Schwalbe Marathon Winter 35mm tires.
On a windy day I try to do the dirt with the wind to my back. Well I guessed
wrong today. The dirt road follows the Connecticut River and it has the river
on one side and open farm fields on the other. Add the muddy conditions and it
made for a good resistance workout. Given the cold that gets here tomorrow
this is probably my last ride for awhile.

My blue wooly warm trainer kept me more then warm enough.

Love the bike and the jersey. Two of the best products that Riv made and are
no more.

[RBW] That new-bottom bracket feeling! (And a great Sat ride)

2014-01-19 Thread Tony DeFilippo
After an unnecessary, self-imposed delay I finally replaced the aging TA
Axix BB on my Atlantis with a cheap, new Shimano UN55 unit... what a
noticeable and wonderful change! Im happy to report that the 127mm axle
worked fine w/ my TA Zephyr crank and the wide Atlantis chainstays. The
Axix is a nice looking bit of metal but either the replaceable cartridge
bearings are ready for replacement or its somewhat complicated installation
requirements proved to much for me... or both. Either way the new BB is
silent, smooth and makes me very happy!

To inaugurate the new component I got in a spirited (for me) 35 mile round
trip up the Capitol Crescent Trail to meet up with list-member Erl in
Bethesda. The bagels, coffee and conversation were well worth the trip! I
also satisfied my curiosity for the 26 wheeled Atlanti by getting to size
myself up on Erl's 56cm Atlantis... I'm not sure I'll ever fully grasp the
art of bike sizing. It sure seems like I'd be perfectly capable of being
comfortable for long distances on that 56cm 26 wheeled frame.

To inaugurate the new component I got in a spirited (for me) 35 mile round

also satisfied my curiosity for the 26 wheeled Atlanti by getting to size

[RBW] Quickbeam Gets Fatter - a set on Flickr

2014-01-19 Thread Eric Norris
Inspired by the ride of the 42mm Grand Bois Hetres on my Bleriot, I spent a
couple of hours today changing out the tires on my Quickbeam from the 700x28
size I've been using forever to a set of 700x35s (Paselas, purchased from
another member of this list).

Changing the tires was no big deal. The bulk of the time was spent adjusting
the fenders to fit around the fatter rubber. That involved, among other things,
using a Dremel to cut off the protruding end of the daruma bolt that holds the
front fender onto the fork crown. Yes, the 35s needed every millimeter of
clearance I could get (the rear wheel wouldn't even spin when I first put it
in, due to a lack of clearance, even though the 28s had gobs of room).

Results are in the photos here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/campyonlyguy/sets/72157639957181314/

I haven't had a chance to ride it yet, other that a spin up and down the block,
but from an appearance standpoint alone it was worth it. The fatter tires
certainly fill out the fenders much better.

Ride report once I've had a chance to get it on the road.
