I've been thinking slot about gearing, 2 slide configurations and WI products myself lately... The eccentric rear hub has allowed me to SS my XO-3 and I've been riding it allot over the past couple weeks. Right now I'm running 45x19 but I also ran 40x17 which are pretty darn close anyway. My rides have been all paved, rail trail and relatively flat streets. Both ratios work pretty well but I'd love to take advantage of the 17/19 dos eno that I have with a pair of chain rings. I keep wondering if I'd actually swap that often given that so much of my riding is pretty uniform and flat. I think I might like the idea of the versatility and not take the time to do the manual shift... Re: [RBW] Re: Appaloosa Prototype on Blug?
An additional point about wheel and tire changes - the variety and quality of 700c tires has never been better. It is fairly simple to duplicate the suggestions above with one wheel set and multiple tires. For instance, rather than having separate 700, 650B and 26 wheel sets for fast, daily and OR riding, one could have a 700C wheel set built around medium width rims that would easily accommodate Compass Barlow Pass for fast road riding, Soma Xpress for every day (and even gravel road for that matter) riding, and after pulling off the fenders, the Bruce Gordon Rock n' Road for off road riding. These tires all work well with cantis, v-brakes, or even the extended reach side pulls. Tires take up a lot less space than rims. In the end I expect 95% or maybe more of the Riv market will ultimately decide on one type of tire they like best and not bother swapping no matter how easy it is to do so. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9-BgcVClSC4/UyHCr4nz7PI/ACI/Z3C93t1D-GA/s1600/Jan_Herse_light.jpg A hanging Edelux makes a lot of sense on a rack with a dedicated attachment for the light. There is less torque on the mounting bolt, so it's less likely to come loose due to vibrations. (A standing light always wants to rotate downward.) The hanging Edelux also makes sense when you mount your light under the handlebars – less obtrusive than on top of the bars... Above is the hanging Edelux on my randonneur bike. I modified the attachment so it is forked. This allows me to adjust the angle of the light while riding (higher when out of town to see even when going into a dip in the road, lower in town to avoid blinding oncoming traffic), without the bolt loosening. Once the hanging Edelux II will become available, I'll probably run the lighting wire through the tube that supports the light – there is less risk of snagging it that way, and it doesn't look nice exposed as it currently is. Re: [RBW] Re: Appaloosa Prototype on Blug?
I really would much rather have several bikes than one do it all with wheel swaps. I just don't think the wheel swap thing works as well in practice as in theory. I tried it on my Sam with Paul moto brakes, going from 650b to 700. It was a little pointless; the 650b wheels with 38 tires does just fine. Does anybody know if the Appaloosa is built to be more mountain bike like than the Yves or Betty? Meaning a little stronger to take some bumps better? Just curious because my next rive will be mostly for trail riding. I got the fast roadeo, the comfy long distance Sam, now I need a mountain bike. Re: [RBW] 650b Roadeo
I don't know. Is my 650b Ram a Ram? The additional tire width is possible because the wheel is smaller and widest part of the tire is where the frame is wider. However, even I don't think the Roadeo is a good conversion candidate because the BB height is even lower than the Ram. However, I could really see the benefits of a lighter tubing 650b brevet bike. The Ram with Hetres is a remarkably comfortable ride, and a Roadeo-like 650b bike would be similar. The steep hill I live on completely rules out a singlespeed for the uphill part, and rules out riding fixed for the downhill part. Still, I notice that for my commute I use a particular small handful of gears. It makes me think that it is plausible for me to build a 2-speed, using a White 16/19 on the back and two chainrings on the front with 3-teeth of difference, so I could have one rear wheel position. Right now my concept is a 35/38 in front with the 16/19 in back. My two gears: 35x19 and 38x16 would be 50 and 64 with 27 diameter wheels (700x32). On a 110mm BCD, I could alternatively easily run a 36/39, a 39/42, a 40/43 or a 42/45 in front without having to chase down any weird chainrings. On a 94mm BCD, I could run a 29/32 for offroady stuff. As a shifting maneuver, I'd loosen the right side bolt. Stick-shift the chain from big-to-small and then from small-to-big. Then tighten the right side bolt again and ride away. Anyway, by my numbers, spinning at 110RPM with a 27 diameter wheel is 21mph, which is plenty fast for road cruising for me, especially when I can coast downhills. I think I can handle the 50 gear up my hill as well. I wonder what others feel they need. I know Patrick Moore zens out with a slow metronome cadence climbing with 70-something gear inches. [RBW] Re: Riv-esque Bike shops in Portland?
Also worth checking out is A Better Cycle down on SE Division and 23rd, and if you like the cargo bikes, Splendid on SE Ivon and 4th. Also worth noting is that several local bagmakers have storefronts, too. Not Carradice-y/Sackville-y, but not portland design works chump-swag-y either. I'm partial to North St, and Curtis is on SE 23rd just south of the Clinton bikeway. He's across the street from Beckel Canvas, whose display window is always worth a look-see. (Now if they made bike stuff...) Black Star Bags has a storefront on SE Hawthorne and 21st, right next to Coventry Cycle Works. And Blaq has a storefront on SE Division and 11th. -Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Dan Abelson On Mar 12, 2014 2:10 PM, Bill Lindsay tapebu...@gmail.commailto:tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: I have a build concept for a SimpleBeam kind of thing. Thanks Tom and Dan. It's pretty much unanimous. Somewhere in the mid 60s is a good thing to try for my normal gear. My climbing gear depends on what I can push. [RBW] FS: 58 Rambouillet Green complete bike - $1250 shipped - last bump and price drop
Last time before wrapping the bars and heading to eBay. $50 off for local SF Bay Area sales. Open to parting out if someone is interested in the frame or some group of components. Thanks for looking! - After lots of pondering I have decided to offer up my green 2006 58cm Ram for sale. Need to thin the herd and prep for an unexpected arrival in 6.5 months or so. Not a bicycle arrival, either. It is a great bike. Nice but not perfect shape. Beausage but not too much. No dents. I bought the bike from the first owner - time to move it forward with a few upgrades. Some original and some new parts. I had just gotten into replacing the bar tape and brake levers when I made the decision so decided to leave the brake cables bar wrap for the new owner to complete. I am including new brake cables/ black housing and a package of the natural cork tape from RBW to complete things. The brake housing run from the rear TT stop to the rear brake is fine and recent so I am leaving that as is. Here are the build details: 58 cm Rambouillet: Mavic Open Pro / Ultegra hubs Grand Bois Cypres 30 tires - recent Ultegra headset Origin 8 brake levers (Tektro R340) - new Tektro R539 brakes - recent Shimano 105 triple front Der Deore LX rear der Sugino triple crankset 48/36/26 Shimano HG-61 11-34 cassette - recent Shimano 9-speed chain - recent Shimano 9-speed bar ends - indexes properly if you want to go that way. Nitto Noodles 46cm Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem 8cm Nitto 65 seatpost Not including the saddle, pedals/clips, or bottle cages. I am including an extra pair of new in package GB Cypres 30 tires. So 4 tires total. Link to some photos: https://www.dropbox.com/sc/3owvcanep0srgok/BC5eyQrHXk Let me know if there are problems accessing the images. Questions? Ask away. Basically I haven't encountered much gruff from any shop in Portland, especially when dealing with their service/mechanical folks. It's like rolling into a shop with a Riv tells the mechanics it's okay to talk about unracy bikes. The two closest shops to me are West End and Western Bike Works, and while they're definitely mainstream shops, they carry all the parts, tools, and fat tires you'd care to try. cc On Thu, Mar 13, 2014 at 8:49 AM, redsydude thaus...@q.com wrote: The Universal Cycles store on Burnside has a showroom with Brooks, Nitto, Tekro, Sugino, ... and (based on the guy who helped me) excellent mechanic(s). They don't have mechanics or a showroom where you can browse, but you can order on their site for local pick-up. They have a pretty diverse inventory. I tried KS salmon pads, and adjusted it for what seemed like forever. All I got was brake squeal and/or shudder. Terrible. On advice of a friend, I put on a cheapie Tektro 926al mini-v brake in the front and wham - it was like night and day! The brake stop perfectly with no squeal or shudder. And this was with the stock black pads that came with the brake. Also, had no problem working with the Campy ergo lever. Now, some could argue that what I really needed was a fork mounted brake cable hanger instead of the one that hanged off the top of the headset. That may be true, but at that time I didn't know about this hanger, so the mini-v was the solution. At about $20 (or less if you go on the internet), it was well worth the cost and far superior to the lousy Suntour canti brake. [RBW] Fully Riv'd Santana Touring Tandem
I've come to the painful realization that our tandem needs to go. The bike was lovingly restored by me and has seen many wonderful journeys. However, since our son was born the only time it sees any uses is when I use it to pick people up from the train station =(. Look at the pictures first: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57941256@N00/13133971214/in/set-72157642312563303 The frame is a late 80's or early 90's, beautifully fillet brazed Columbus tubing. Not sure what measurements are appropriate to give, but my wife and I are about 57 and 6 respectively. It has the original Araya 27 tandem wheels. The bike could be converted to 700c but the wheels have many miles left on them so I haven't bothered. The cockpit features albatross bars, silver shifters and mountain style levers. Captain and stoker both get shellacked cork grips and Honey Brooks B-17's. On the rear I've got a stainless steel touring rack with a fancy Nigel Smythe trunk bag. This bike is equally ready to ride on an extended tour or a Sunday picnic in the park. I'd like to get $*1,000* *as pictured*, though I'd consider selling without saddles, bags etc if you prefer. I've spent considerably more building it up and I suspect it might fetch more on Craigslist or Ebay, but given the sentimental value I would love to sell this bike to someone on-list. That's an incredibly low price on a spectacular family tandem. But please don't sell it! Buy a burley solo trailer and go out all three of you. Then, buy a Burley Piccolo when your son is a little bigger, then consider getting a kiddie crank so he can stoke for you. Before you know it he'll be stoking for you without the kiddie crank! I just finished that waiting game, and my son is now able to stoke for me on our Ibis tandem. Re: [RBW] 650b Roadeo
Though I can't imagine anybody taking you to task for not scraping off the decals, if you sold it through the mail to somebody who knows what a Ram is from reading about RBW without pointing out it's 650B converted state they might well object when they opened the box. My view is that the is the Rodeo is RBW's quicker handling option for those who are happy with tires that fit under medium reach brakes. Such a thing could easily be 650b, particularly in the smaller sizes. But AHH geometry means AHH handling, and 38+mm tires means long reach or canti brakes. Neither of those are what a Rodeo is. I think the bike some on this thread are talking about would be more easily expressed as an AHH with lighter gauge tubing. On Thursday, March 13, 2014 8:32:08 AM UTC-7, ttoshi wrote: I don't know. My AHH with Pari-Moto tires is very close to the 650b Ram, but the Ram with Hetres feels even more stable and smooth... I don't think I was being dramatic at all, only honest. For a $200 light a $100+ dollar rack Riv is only suggesting some fancy jerry-rigging technique. I don't think that's realistic. [RBW] Re: Edelux - Blug Post
Hi Eric, We mess around with modifying Nitto racks kind of a lot at the shop I occasionally work at, mostly for the purpose of dialing in the fitment or getting things super level. It's way easy, or at least for the guys who do the actual welding and brazing (not me). Moot point really, since I guess it's not exactly an easy solution from the standpoint of a customer buying a fancy rack, spending more money to have it modified, and then more money to have it painted or powdercoated. Re: [RBW] Re: Edelux - Blug Post
I agree with the rant – it shouldn't be that hard to use your bike at night. There actually are standards for lights. For example, all the German lights use an M6 bolt, and the bases are the same width. They mount to standard brackets that go on the fork crown. The bracket sandwiches the light, so you can adjust the light's angle by hand without loosening the bolt. As long as you use canti, V-brakes or discs, the fork crown is wide open. The rear light goes on the rear fender. Whether these are the best locations is a different matter, but if you have a German city bike and want to switch from a IQ Cyo to an Edelux, it's a simple swap. It's the same with derailleurs on our bikes. Yes, putting the derailleur on the outside of the rear dropout isn't ideal – the hanger tends to bend when the bike falls over – but they all are the same, and switching from Shimano to Campy is a snap today, unlike in the old days when Campy, Huret and Simplex each had their own dropouts with different derailleur hangers. We run into problems if our bikes aren't designed for derailleurs or lights. Then we have to get creative. And the results are often sub-optimal. Just like with cars, where the add-on fog lights tend to fall off, rotate or have unintended consequences (engines overheating because the lights block the radiator). The headlights that come with the car rarely have any issues... The beauty of a bike that is designed from the onset for lights is that you don't have to think about them. If they are well-designed, they are just there, ready to be switched on when you need them. I'd like to see the Sugino cranks offered with a black or hard anodizing. Next I'd like to see the big front rack with a small tomb stone to accommodate a rando bag. Re: [RBW] Poll: What are your single speed gears?
ted's advise is sound and it helped formed the basis of my choice on my new-to-me 50cm Mini-beam. I rode my 650b Sam in the 46/18 combination without shifting on my regular route and settled around 66 as a good all around gearing. I ultimately chose a 46t Sugino RD crank with an 18t White freewheel on one side, with a 19t fixed gear on the other. Not having much experience with a fixed gear, an easier 62 gearing is what I felt comfortable with at this time. I'm afraid I'm going to argue contrary advice here. I wouldn't choose a new, unmarked frame as my first build. [RBW] rack eyelet - bolt size?
Don't mean to be dense but what is the bolt size needed for the eyelets that you connect a rack to that are near the rear dropouts? And can these be obtained at say Home Depot? I know the head is either 4mm or 5mm, but that doesn't help with the thread size. Or does it? Basically, I just need some bolts to hook up this R-14 that I got from this list. I have the stock Rivendell bolts on the seat stays above the brakes, and I will use those, but I need to know what to get for the eyelets. -- Keep the metal side up and the rubber side down! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I saw go for it and build it up at home! Get your favorite shop to install the headset, the rest is a great way to really become attached to your bike and learn how it all works together.
