[RBW] Re: Recommend all silver triple FD for Bleriot build please.
Lunginsam, FWIW, Shimano's claim about those flat bar derailleurs being for flat bar shifters is just marketing, otherwise it is false. Flat bar shifters are mtb shifters in cable pull. You can use it with indexed mtn shifters and certainly with friction ! The fd- r443 and all road triples are optimized/marketed for road rings, as opposed to their mtn FD's which are optimized/marketed for mtb rings. It does not mean either or cannot be used with say, a 46 big ring. As usual, the proof is in the applying it. I've read of people using the R443/4503 with as small as 44t big rings , so as far as I am concerned if you want a nice all silver clamp on FD, that is good choice. It comes with a 31.8 diameter clamp with a shim for 28.6. Don't concern yourself with 8 , 9 or 10 speed derailleurs , as you are friction shifting ! If you order a fd-r443 online, just make sure it is in retail packaging that includes the shim, the oem's do not . Always ask if in doubt. You can always order a shim too . -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. In this case, dealing with brass, it is an oxidation process. As Steve pointed out, rusting is the oxidation of iron; tarnishing is the oxidation of copper or brass. (Though to be precise, a tarnish can form with other than 'oxidation'; if instead of oxygen, it was sulfur dioxide, or for silver, hydrogen sulfide... well, there's the whole reducing environment versus oxidizing environment... say, if you have available iron in an an oxidizing environment, yes, you can have hematite or magnetite forming (Fe2O3 or Fe3O4), but if it's a reducing environment, you end up with pyrites (FeS2, etc.) instead. One difference: a tarnish is happening on the surface, and can form a 'protective' layer for the underlying metal. A rust, like a normal 'red' rust, can continue to see ongoing oxidation of iron. (However, it is possible to get a 'black rust' to act as a tarnish, and keep the underlying iron from rusting. ) -L (a geologist, trying to remember his chemistry) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: 650b wheel building question
Just an amateur builder here, having only built three wheels in my life (but hoping to do many more). But I would defer to the rim manufacturer for recommended spoke tensions. Some extra lightweight rims are not rated for high spoke tension. And some rim styles dictate lower or higher tension (e.g., V-rims generally tolerate more tension). So far, my three wheels have held up well and haven't needed truing. I followed Jobst Brandt's The Bicycle Wheel from start to finish; seemed to be a very thorough guide into the physics of it all. [RBW] Re: How do I measure Q factor?
My method is: 1. Rotate one crank arm so that it is parallel with the seat tube 2. measure with a caliper from the outer face of the crank at the pedal threads to the far end of the seat tube (i.e., the measurement includes the distance to the seat tube AND the diameter of the seat tube). 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other crank arm. 4. Measure the diameter of the seat tube alone. 5. Add the values you got for each crank arm, and subtract the value from step 4 (since it got added twice). That's your Q. Anton, who many people consider a quack. Two thoughts/questions - completely unsubstantiated! 1) does Amtrak offer boxed bikes (or better, roll-on) service through to Dunsmuir (where, when running on the advertised, you'll arrive in the middle of night)? 2) I've heard Amtrak offers bus connections (w/ through-checked luggage i.e. bike box!), I think all the way up the 101 / Redwood Highway. [RBW] Re: silver shifters question
Short answer - yes. However the downtube shifters have a different washer. The bar end version has a circular washer with a square hole in it. The downtubers have the same washer, but with a little tang, or stop that would prevent you from using it on a bar end pod. Sorry, its hard to explain without pictures. Maybe someone else can chime in as well. [RBW] Continental Divide 4 day Bikepack
Wow. Wow. Wow! The plan was six days, but I needed to come out two days early because vertigo and scree (rocks that slip under your feet) do not play well together. Wow. Things really seem to be getting dialed in in terms of gear and bike. The Albastache (vs Albatross) bars and 2.25 wide Smart Sams (vs 50mm Duremes) made climbing and descending the technical parts (which was most of it) far easier. I've honed down my gear such that everything weighs roughly 35 pounds, including water, hatchet, and firebox. For me, with brain injury and sensitivity to noise and scents, I try and avoid ATV's and their ilk. I failed to do this heading in (it's a popular ATV road to the trail head). Fortunately it was still early enough that it was lightish traffic and I made unmotorized single track fairly quickly. The climb up to the tundra was wonderful and the time on the tundra was stunning. Rain, fog, sleet, hail, with accidental storms of sunshine was the weather. When you have stunning, epic views, these weather system make for amazing beauty. Wow. Lots of LCG (lowest common gear). If the trail went up, it didn't mess around it went UP. Grant is right, bikers are biathletes. Grin. More time to admire the stunning alpine flowers going off like slow motion fireworks. Got to descend an old narrow gage rail bed, the line used to transport coal and supplies for gold mines. The ties were still down for much of it, though half filled in and round down, which made for a bouncy, fun ride! All in all a fantastic trip that pushed my boundaries, and the boundaries pushed back. Always good to know where those puppies are so I can push them more wisely next time. Grin. [RBW] Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
Hi Friends, I looked back at previous threads, most notably the link below on short cranks and knee pain; however, perhaps this question is slightly different. Over the past week or a bit longer, I've developed a really pronounced pain in my right knee. It's on under the front part of my kneecap and is bad enough that I stopped riding and am limping a bit. I do think it's riding related. Here's some info: I switched pedals maybe a week or two ago from thin griptsters to sneaker pedals. I switched back and forth between seats/seatposts during this time as well, and may have gotten the height off. The right knee was bothering me a little bit during this time, but then really got sore two days ago when I rode up a short but extremely steep hill that I usually walk up (for locals, it was the long bit of driveway between pleasant and w. irvine ave adjacent to Ramsey hill). I dropped down to granny gears and sat part of the way and then stood up to finish the hill. The next meaning I was just about hobbled—but only my right knee. Left knee is fine as can be. Suggestions? Advice? [RBW] Re: silver shifters question
Jason Yes, you can do it. You have Silver Barcon Shifters. Those barcon shifters came with the round flat washer spacer thing with the big square hole in it. Life is good. When you buy the downtube version, you will receive a flat washer spacer thing with a big square hole in it with a tang on it. You will set those aside and continue to use the one without a tang that came with your barcon shifters. You don't have to cut any tang off to make the right part, because you already have the right part. Life is good. [RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
Why do you think Grant carries hatchets? Grin. I'm no help for what may or may not work on the bike. However, what you describe sounds like condramylagia (sp?), which I got growing up and had two surgeries for by the time I was 17. Basically, the cartilage under the knee cap is tearing. Here is what helped mine: -- muscle strengthening. I do squats, very slow up and down. As well as trail run and bike regularly. As your quads build up, the pain should decrease significantly. -- real bone broth. We have this regularly year round. Simmer bones in a pot for 24 hours with a tablespoon of vinegar. Once the broth is gone, repeat. Till the bones are gone (or we eat them). This gives your body the raw building materials for structural healing, bones, tendons, etc. We use oxtail. -- Walk and run with better alignment and motion. I don't know if this can be done other ways or not, but I know going barefoot as often as possible does this. Heal well! Re: [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
I would just second the idea of one way car rentals which can often get you exactly where and when you want to start and are pretty reasonable compared to Amtrak. I love the romantic notion of the train/bus thing but sometimes if you are on a schedule a rental car saves so much in the way of headaches. [RBW] 3D lugs?
http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/31/evo/ Interesting ideaat least for the average commuter looking for a (hopefully) cheap-ish commuter bike. Key thing being versatility. One thing I like in the video is how he says that most bikes look like a frankenstein of parts. One thing I love about the Rivendell ecosystem is that it is a tight knit group of parts (nitto racks, sackville bags, wald baskets, newbaums bar tape, etc) that make it really easy to make an attractive looking and versatile bike. But outside of that Rivendell ecosystem, it doesn't seem to work very well and the frankenstein of parts rings true. I've tried to build riv-ish bikes with cheaper parts, doesn't look good. The downside to this project bike is that the parts all seem proprietary and 3d printed, potentially cheap quality. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] 3D lugs?
I agree, would never get one...it looks plasticy and cheap, and I love my rivendell and vintage bike restorations because of those design principles. My point is that the scope of the project is interesting, at least from the perspective of how people are trying to look at a mass produced bike that is practical and versatile with a commuter in mind. But yes, design wise, anything that modern looking, especially 3d printed, will never have that classic design and not appeal to this thread as a whole. Good suggestions so far. My thoughts, either Eugene to Eureka, or Eureka to San Francisco. Both are about right for distance, with lots of small detour opportunities. I'd be nervous about relying on campgrounds during the peak family outing season of the year, but my understanding is that hiker-biker campsites usually have room for one more. Plenty of opportunities for discrete camping. Lost Coast is a GREAT idea. Eugene is served by Amtrak; Arcata-Eureka is not. For something different and easily accessed, there are possible loop opportunities out of Santa Rosa -- Cloverdale-ish -- Stewarts Point-ish -- then south-ish. If you're contemplating doing the dirt part of the Lost Coast, pay attention to water. I'm pretty sure there is no water to be had south of Wailaki campground, until you get to Westport: no faucets, no creeks. At this time of year, with this drought, Usal Beach probably has no water other than sea water. [RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
Dang, I just tried to send a response with lotsa detail, and it crashed and I lost it, so here's the short versionL Raise you saddle to compensate for the pedal height diff. You aren't getting enough leg extension, and consequently the back of your kneecap is rubbing on the cartilage and causing inflamation which leads to more rubbing and the pain. Go up and down stairs. If it hurts, then so far this diagnosis is correct. It came on suddenly, and it'll go away in two days max if you let the swelling go down and don't continue the hard low-saddle pedaling. It's a saddle height thing, which is much better than a what's happening to LIESL ??!! thing. That's my guess. On Thursday, July 31, 2014 12:39:18 PM UTC-7, Liesl wrote: Hi Friends, I looked back at previous threads, most notably the link below on short cranks and knee pain; however, perhaps this question is slightly different. Advice? [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
Kurt: For a week, either Eurika / Arcata to the Bay Area or the Oregon coast. But they're each a week at a touring pace. I've done both feel that section of the northern California coast is more interesting than Oregon. Maybe because on my Oregon trips that was toward the end. Their both well worth doing. Oregon actually has better camping options as they have more state facilities with hiker-biker sites. NorCal is pretty un-populated (part of the draw) but not as extensive camping options. Lots of big trees provide plenty of cover if you need to be creative. Mike's one-way car suggestion is the easiest logistics provided you can get a decent rate. One-ways are dependent on the car agency's need to get surplus cars from one place to another, usually between airports. The airport at Eureka is small so not as many agency options. But check it out. I've done lots of one-ways and you have to make lots of phone calls to get the best deal. Bus service will mean boxing your bike on Greyhound. Amtrak is a lot more flexible. They have a policy that says bikes be boxed. But I've seen people talk to the driver wind up stuffing their bikes into the luggage bin after all the other luggage is loaded. A bit of a crap shoot. Up to the driver and today's load. Any time near the start of classes at Humboldt State they'll be busy. The time I used Greyhound we left Oakland mid to late afternoon, arrived in Arcata near midnight. We knew that going in, so no surprise. We kinda forget how much of California there is north of the Bay Area. IIRC it's around 300 miles Greyhound stops a lot. You meet some interesting characters on Greyhound. dougP On Wednesday, July 30, 2014 10:19:19 PM UTC-7, Kurt Manley wrote: I'm looking to do a 1 week solo tour on the proto Hunqapillar the week after next and could use some help picking a route. I was hoping to take the coast down to avoid the inland August heat but the train runs pretty far inland. If I get off at Dunsmuir it looks like a 6000 ft climb in one day in an area thats likely to be near 100 degrees to get towards the coast. More than I want to bite off. Maybe I'm wrong? I've just een [lottting routes on MApMyRide.com. Maybe someone knows a better way? If I get off in Oregon it might be too far to ride back to the bay area in a week? I'm probably good for around 60 miles a day. I like to stop and explore and would love to fish along the way. I'm open to different routes, areas, or modes of transpo to get up there (wherever that might be) but would love to hear from some folks who have toured in far Northern Cal or Oregon. Maybe I'll take the train further north, ride for a while then take it back. It just cuts into my riding time with that much train travel. If you have a good week long route that I can get to via train or bus that won't be crazy hot in August and don't mind sharing I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! The Unknown Coast (Mattole Road to Honeydew, then over Panther Gap) is fantastic. And there is water at Honeydew, and AW Way is a good campground that has water. The route is steep, but I highly recommend that loop. I still have not done the Lost Coast. I planned to do it last September. I called the rangers about water, and was told there was no water at Usal Beach. My friend and I were going to do it anyway, and carry water, but then when we got to Eureka it started raining and raining and raining. Water wouldn't have been a problem any more, but we were warned that we'd find the roads impassable in the mud. When you have stunning, epic views, these weather system make for amazing beauty. Wow. Lots of LCG (lowest common gear). If the trail went up, it didn’t mess around it went UP. Grin. [RBW] Re: Advice needed on knee pain (yet another thread)
I have a very similar pain and I think it would just heal but for a knee high Australian shepherd that crashes into me 200 times a day. Advice? Peter, it's Hilleberg's Akto. We also have their Nano 3-person. Highly recommend it. It's handled -30 or lower (thermometer bottomed out), hail, stunning downpours and high winds extremely well -- best of any tent I've ever had. For me, shelter needs to be substantial enough to actually provide shelter under those conditions, so the ultralight stuff is out. Mike, Ha! Yes. So much good info here! I had not thought of one way car rental. That might be the ticket. I put a rideshare ad on craigslist, we will see what happens. Gabe messaged me off the list and said it's likely I wouldn't be able to offload my bike from the train in Dunsmuir as there is no luggage ramp there. Thanks so much for all the advice!!!
