Great pics – thanks especially for all the shots of the inspiring bikes in Peter Weigle’s booth! I was having such a good time talking with Peter and Elton Pope-Lance and Peter White that I forgot to take out my camera! The Chapman Cycles-made trailer on Elton’s Weigle is gorgeous. [RBW] Re: Philly Bike Expo this weekend!!!
Great pics, Paul... THANKS for posting. I really enjoyed the show, especially seeing my friend Tom Allingham and spending time talking to Peter White, Peter Weigle, and Elton Pope-Lance, whose booths were clustered next to each other, and loaded with a dazzling collection of bikes, a most awesome custom BOB-like trailer and the latest in lighting technology. I got the rare opportunity to test ride the Tout Terrain Silkroad with the (way-cool) 18-speed Pinion drive (thank you, Peter) ... check it out on Peter's site... it was smooth and responsive (not at all clunky), and just had a great feel to it... a sweet ride indeed! (I realize I must have spent too much time at the Weigle/White booths, because I even appear in one of your photos, Paul (I'm the guy with the backpack with the Pumptrack sticker on it, blocking the view.. Sorry, I will leave now...) Peter Weigle's bikes (all of them) are always difficult to take your eyes off of... Elton's personal bike (a J.P. Weigle 650B creation) could be the finest-looking bike I've ever seen... The Bilenky collection (as usual) was a pleasure to behold. A Rivendell booth would have been a most welcome site (just saying) Also had the opportunity to say hi to '*randonneurs-extraordineurs'* Ed Felker and Mary Gersema, whose faces and ride photos I've seen so many times on Flickr, yet never had the pleasure of meeting in person. (Ed and I were wearing the same Bicycle Times jersey... I think there may be a selfie of us circulating out there somewhere... ) I also had the opportunity to test ride a Gazelle bakfiets cargo bike... WOW, it was so balanced and maneuverable, I was blown away. I also rode another bakfiets (which fortunately I forgot the name as it had a most awful, floppy feel to it)... but the Gazelle was pure joy to ride. At the Schwalbe tire booth I was instantly smitten by the the 700c x 50mm wide green and white Century tires... WOW... Need more 2-tone color combos... they just look boss... Funniest of all *(and I think I may need to have my head examined on this one)*... while what I feared most was leaving with a frame strapped to my back (I arrived on bike)...and I swore I was not there to buy... so instead, I ended up buying a Vitamix blender (at a bike show of all places!!) with an extra carafe!!! Fortunately it's being shipped to me... that would have looked funny on my rack... Monica, so sorry to hear this, I'm in Berkeley, too. The first place I would check is Karim on Telegraph just north of Ashby. A shady place that gets stolen bikes brought in for cheap every day. Also, check the Ashby BART flea market this weekend, many riders have found their stolen bikes for sale there. - Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Racks: fork barrel eyelet vs. canti braze-on mounting question.
It's been a while since I set mine up, but what I remember is that you have to put a 15mm wrench on the spring tension bolt and hold it in place while tightening the rack. This is not too different than the standard set up of Paul's except it requires two wrenches instead of a wrench and allen key. Paul's setup is different and can be confusing until you grasp the simplicity of it. It's kind of like going from Windows to OS X. I have that very brake set on a QB and an Atlantis, and have had zero problems setting up the brakes. But it’s not a big problem – finally got it done, and the install seems very solid. *From:* rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com javascript: [mailto: rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com javascript:] *On Behalf Of *Michael Hechmer *Sent:* Saturday, November 08, 2014 4:37 PM *To:* rbw-owne...@googlegroups.com javascript: *Subject:* Re: [RBW] Re: Racks: fork barrel eyelet vs. canti braze-on mounting question. I think practically, it makes no difference at all. The amount of weight that a small front rack has to hold is not enough to test the limits of the strength of the two different triangulation geometries of the two mounting approaches. Personally I think if the bike already has canti studs, the additional barrels just make the upper fork area look cluttered and are somewhat unnecessary. On non-canti equipped bikes, the barrels make perfect sense. However, on non-canti equipped bikes, the brake bolt hole is not available for a direct bolt-up because there is a caliper brake installed. On those bikes, the upper rack mount has to be a bracket or welded rack tang that bolts to the existing brake caliper bolt. Agree, I also read another theory that the caveman/paleo lifespan was actually much longer than the 25-35 years that some people believe. The short lifespan included many who died at birth or by the time they were like 5 years old from disease or malnuitrition. If you eliminate that segment, it was speculated that the caveman could have a lifespan of about 65-70 years. Now, this is still shorter than the current average for modern man which I recently heard was something like 78.1 years, but not substantial like the common misperception of 25-35 years of age. [RBW] Re: Update: Re: Geometry, climbing, what's going on? (Problem solved and a question)
It would be interesting to hear from a professional bicycle designer on this point: I know it's hard to design small frames without design compromises; is one of the compromises putting the rider too far back on the bike? Based on my 5' 2 tall wife's experiences with a few bikes, small bikes with 700c wheels don't work well at low speed. She rode a low end MTB with 26 wheels that climbed quite well at walking speed. Then she moved on to a mid-grade sport-touring bike with 700c wheels that was considerably lighter but took more attention when climbing. This bike is similar to a 58 cm in our family and the head tube angle of the smaller one is visibly more slack. A few years ago she got a 47 cm Atlantis with 26 wheels. She has climbed long grades with panniers and noticed how much easier it is compared to her previous bikes. Both leg effort general control are superior and she's quite confident with the Atlantis. Both the Atlantis and the old MTB have 44 cm chainstays and the 700c wheeled sport tourer has 42 cm chainstays. So being further back may be a factor but likely it's a combination of things. My thought is the front end has a lot to do with the feel of the bike especially at low speeds. It seems the slack head tube angle would result on more wheel flop for the rider to deal with. On a steep climb where the front end is lightly weighted, a floppy front wheel could cause the rider to lose confidence in the bike's stability. Note that I have no qualifications, just observations opinions. It would be interesting to hear from someone who does this professionally. dougP On Sunday, November 9, 2014 9:54:34 PM UTC-8, Anne Paulson wrote: A few months ago I asked for suggestions about how I could climb better on my new bike. I was feeling that I was worse at climbing on the new bike than on my other bikes despite having lower gears, and was unable to climb hills that I should have been able to climb. I figured out the problem: my weight was too far back. I dropped the handlebars, and (as I thought) moved the saddle forward. That helped a little. Then I replaced the offset seatpost with a straight seatpost. While doing that I noticed that instead of moving the saddle all the way forward, I had moved the seatpost all the way forward on the saddle- so I had moved the saddle *back*. Oops. Moving it forward solved the problem completely. There are plenty of super steep dirt trails that I can't climb, but I am able to climb normally steep hills with no problem. Hurray! And that brings me to a question about frame design for short people. One of my riding partners is 5 feet tall. She's slender, and she climbs like a rocket, much faster than I can. But, oddly, even though we have the same low gears, she has trouble climbing the super steep roads that I love to tackle. She's afraid of them, says she can't balance. Re: [RBW] Re: OT (grant-related, not Riv-related): lo-carb, high fat protein, ketosis, c.
If a high percentage of cave people died before age 5, then the “average age” could in fact be 25-35 years. The average lifespan is basically the sum of everyone’s age at death divided by the number of people. Today’s average lifespan of 78.1 is in large part the result of more people living beyond infant/childhood. (Also not to be overlooked, the high percentage of women who died in childbirth). Of course, you could argue that a caveman living to the age of 65 or 70 is evidence that whatever they were eating was keeping them alive for a long time. But the fact that cave people got to be more or less as old as modern folks doesn’t mean that the “common misperception” of a shorter average lifespan is, in fact, a misperception. It’s probably correct, on average. Apparently, this pattern (many people dying before they became adults) lasted well into the middle ages: http://www.sarahwoodbury.com/life-expectancy-in-the-middle-ages/ http://www.sarahwoodbury.com/life-expectancy-in-the-middle-ages/ Especially in those days, it was good to be King … and to not get killed in battle. —Eric N campyonly...@me.com www.campyonly.com www.wheelsnorth.org Blog: http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com Twitter: @campyonlyguy On Nov 10, 2014, at 2:27 PM, Brewster Fong bfd...@gmail.com wrote: The short lifespan included many who died at birth or by the time they were like 5 years old from disease or malnuitrition. [RBW] Re: Polling what's the best 650b touring tire?
What makes for a good touring tire? And do we want a tire that is optimal for the days we are actually touring or best for our all around needs? What kind of touring? Where? My experience with tires has been that urban environments destroy tires faster than rural ones do. Except maybe in the SW, where goat heads puncture damn near everything. In general, road debris destroys tires way faster than a heavy load does or even rocks, and that debris is usually way more prevalent in urban areas than rural roads,. Bad luck can strike any tire so we always need to be prepared. Our tandem has Schwalbe Marathon Racers (26x1.6), underneath a fully loaded bike that is well over 400 lbs. This is a relatively light tire which serves our needs best on a day to day basis but holds up quite well on tour. Commuting creates the most difficult environment for tires. When I commuted I wanted bullet proof, to hell with rolling resistance. Touring, piece of cake for most tires. Since you guys are talking about 650b tires - We have made a 650b version of our Rock n’ Road tires. They will be in our shop around Christmas time. Check out our Blog for the progress on the tires. Did I mention that they will be tubeless compatible, and available in Blackwall or Skinwall. Re: [RBW] Revelate Pika bag: dimensions and reviews?
Thanks; just what I needed to know. It's far too big for my gofast, which simply needs a bag big enough for a small repair kit and a 28 oz bottle. But it would suit my Fargo better than the 7.5 l (expanded) Mountain Wedge III, which is deep enough when expanded that it drags on the tire. On Mon, Nov 10, 2014 at 4:30 PM, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote: When it's cinched small, it's about 12 long. Expanded, it's about 21 long. The end circumference is about 22, which is a lot smaller than it sounds: that's a circle with a diameter of 7. And there's the problem: this is a long, narrow bag. It's hard to get to things in it. The capacity of a Pika is much more than the Mountain Wedge III. The Wedge holds 7 liters. The Pika holds 12 liters. On Mon, Nov 10, 2014 at 1:34 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote: In the ongoing search for the ideal seat bag, I came across the Pika which looks as if it might have the best of both (small and big) worlds; and it comes in red. Does anyone own a Pika? If so, can she or he give me the dimensions both expanded to the maximum and cinched as small as possible? If anyone has one to sell, I might be interested, particularly if it is red. My Jandd Mountain Wedge III is too hugely huge for my purpose and I might be persuaded to add that to the bid side of the trade -- I realize that the Revelate is 2X the cost of the Jandd. 'Nother question: The Minihaha small saddlebag is 9.5 X 6 X 6. Can one get a large Riv waterbottle (a wee bit over 10 at the top of the spout) into one of these without forcing things? I expect that the Revelate design is better for my needs, but just in case ... Thanks. -- Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, bios, and letters that get interviews. By-the-hour resume and LinkedIn coaching. Too many bags, Joe, too many bags. I bought two, and use one; I also use an Acorn Tri-fold on another bike. And the tried and true oilcloth burrito wraps on a couple of others. [RBW] Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?
Hello, I recently installed H50 Honjos on the Bleriot with my Hetres, as you may recall from an earlier post. I have between what looks like 1-2cm clearance all around. Tightest are under the sidepull brakes. That's the max I can get. Tires spin fine, no rubbing. No rattling. But on the two commutes I did this week, I repeatedly heard pebbles and rocks rattling through the fenders as I rode over them. Does this indicate that the clearances are not ample? Do I need to go to a narrower/smaller tire? I have SKS Longboards and Hetres on my Sam bike and I rarely hear rocks going through, though the clearances look similar to what I have on the Bleriot. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: STOLEN: 50cm Rambouillet (Berkeley, CA)
I'm so sorry. I did have a friend recover her stolen road bike at the Laney flea market in Oakland about 3 weeks ago. She spotted it, walked up with her police report, told them it was hers, and walked it away. Bring the report with you and you should be able to pick it up from any of the local flea markets without incident. Couldn't hurt to bring a (larger) friend with you as well.
